Every time I’ve heard Philip Goff speak I’ve always found him rhetorically underwhelming which is a shame because panpsychism is an incredibly interesting perspective. I think there’s a host of worthwhile ideas to be explored in that space; I just haven’t seen him exploring them very deftly. The worldviews of Spinoza and Leibniz need philosophical work to be made compatible with more modern frameworks, and Goff doesn’t seem to want to do that work.

I’ve seen him be asked “why would you believe this?” multiple times and I’ve never heard him give an answer to that question, he just restates what it is he believes. It’s frustrating. Sometimes he says things like, the belief in panpsychism is more spiritually enriching than physicalism, which is at least cogent but is a straightforwardly bad reason.

He’s also said that children reared in a panpsychist tradition (as opposed to a physicalist or dualist tradition) would be less indifferent to and more protective of the environment. Which I think is silly. To his credit, it’s an empirical question that can be tested, but I don’t think he would find an actual answer to the specific test he’s suggesting very pertinent to the point he is trying to make. But clearly there are plenty of physicalists who care deeply about the environment. That position isn’t as incoherent as he want to imply without directly stating.

So Philip Goff is bringing up a "limited god" hypothesis to work with the "fine-tuning" hypothesis and that suffering exists. He doesn't seem to fully define this being but apparently it has the power to make the universe as it is and no better.

He thinks that is the simplest answer to the problem of evil and fine-tuning. I said that the issue with the fine-tuning hypothesis is that we don't have the data set to actually determine that. We can speculate and imagine but the constants that we have found are what they are. We have no reason to expect they could be different.

Fine-tuning is literally Douglas Adams analogy of the puddle, life exists therefore the universe was built for life to exist.

He seems to not be able, as most apologists appear unable, to see that it's possible that the feedback loop relationships that exist allowed for what he is calling life to come to be.

On the topic of life, I find the definition to be tedious. I am made of atoms, molecules, cells, etc. where is the line of "dead material" and "live material"? Our consciousness is an emergent property of our brains, but are we anything more than a bunch of "dead" things that move around and do stuff?

Theosophically, Goff is in a bind. According to Goff’s preferred form of theism, while God can create the universe and set up its physical laws, he can’t monkey around with them once the universe has been created. The reason Goff’s view is set up this way is to explain fine-tuning while dodging the problem of evil. After all, if God can’t miraculously intervene in the world, he can’t save a fawn from a forest fire, or stop Murray Rothbard from writing books.

Equally though, if God can’t suspend to laws of physics to prevent evils, he can’t suspend them to perform miracles, either. Thus, on Goff’s telling, there can be no virgin birth, no water to wine, no multiplying loaves and fishes. Why do the Gospel’s say these things happened? Because—Goff says—the Gospels are sometimes wrong.

Nobody in this year's class can be described as a "superior" player. The week before, Bill Barnwell of ESPN detailed how in the lottery-like draft "the most effective strategy is to purchase more tickets." The RG3 trade was perhaps the best example to date, however the losers of that trade appear to be completely unaware of this lesson.

LaDainian Tomlinson says the Chargers should sell Philip Rivers. He believes the Chargers are in rebuilding mode and they should sell Philip Rivers instead of ruin the rest of his career. Can that be considered realistic? Maybe it will work out however the Rams should know better.
