The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has delivered a major update on when Marcelo Bielsa’s new contract with Leeds should be finalised. WHAT DID HE SAY? Bielsa led the Whites to the Championship title last season, securing the club’s long-awaited return to the Premier League. One thing that has been a talking point is when the Argentine would put pen to paper on an extension at Elland Road, and Hay has provided a very positive update. He said: “My understanding is that Leeds and Bielsa are essentially agreed on the terms of an extension for next season. Unless something goes wrong over the weekend, the contract should be finalised and put in place before the players resume training on Wednesday. The length of time taken to get this done shouldn’t be a surprise. IS IT HAALAND SNR OR DAVID HOPKINS? YOUR LEEDS KNOWLEDGE WILL BE PUT TO THE TEST WITH THIS QUIZ… WORLD CLASS SCORE: 95% | EXPERT SCORE: 80% | VETERAN SCORE: 65% | INTERMEDIATE SCORE: 45% | AMATEUR SCORE: 30% | TRY AGAIN: 5% “Neither of his previous contract negotiations with Leeds were quick and both Bielsa’s deal and his expectations can be complex. But Leeds are confident and his camp are confident. The bottom line: the club cannot afford for this process to fail and they know that.” LEEDS’ BIGGEST PRIORITY Forget all the talk of big-money signings and high-profile arrivals. The biggest thing Leeds could do for both now and for the long-term future of the club, is secure Bielsa to a new deal. The Whites are indebted to the Argentine for finally leading them out of the Championship, and doing so in a way which has made them into one of the most exciting teams in the country – they scored the second-highest amount of goals in the division with 77 last season. Would any other manager have gotten as much out of the current Leeds squad as Bielsa? Arguably not. He comes with a world-renowned reputation, and that just elevates Leeds’ profile as a club. Players want to learn under the best managers in the world, and when the likes of Pep Guardiola are hailing the current Whites boss as their reference point, then you know you’ve got someone special in charge. The best thing Leeds could do this summer is tie Bielsa down to a new contract. #PhilHay #LeedsUnited #MarceloBielsa

The Miles Davis Quintet "Cookin' With The Miles Davis Quintet" 次のマラソン・セッションは、4枚中最初の1957年に発売されたアルバム。 #MilesDavis (tp) #JohnColtrane (ts) #RedGarland (p) #PhillyJoeJones (ds) #PaulChambers (b) Mastered, Recorded By - #RudyVanGelder Supervised By - #BobWeinstock Liner Notes - #IraGitler Cover Design - #ReidMiles Cover Artwork - #PhilHays 盤イチは、冒頭の"My funny valentine"、いきりの一撃! https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz2IL8Qpcjy/?igshid=n5dc4r9whcy0

After suffering relegation back in 2004, very few could surely have imagined a scenario where Leeds still wouldn’t be in the Premier League 15 years later. But the Whites have finally managed to make their return to the promised land, and it has been a journey full of highs, and even bigger lows. Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival as manager at Elland Road seemed to spark new life, and but for a late season collapse last year, they would have already been in the top-flight. But this time around, the Whites have had no such slip-up, and they can finally call themselves a Premier League club again. And taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay revealed the people the club must thank for their top-flight return. So many hands involved in promotion – Radrizzani, Bielsa, Orta, Kinnear, backroom team, crowds and, not least, a squad who took the crack of Bielsa’s whip and ran with it. This will stand out as a unique period of the club’s history. — Phil Hay (@PhilHay_) July 17, 2020 Bielsa no doubt deserves a large amount of credit for getting this team to perform on the pitch, but the work done behind the scenes by the likes of Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta, amongst others, has been equally important. It’s been a collective effort from top to bottom, and the fans have played their part in it too. They may not have seen their team play Premier League football for a number of years, but still Elland Road has been packed to the rafters. It took everyone mucking in to get over the line, but Leeds United can finally look forward to top-flight football once more. #PhilHay #LeedsUnited #TheAthletic

Leeds United still await news on the resumption of the Premier League season, but this has seemingly not stopped them from preparing ahead for next season. This was the suggestion from Phil Hay in a recent Q&A on The Athletic. A series of questions were asked about the goalkeeping position and whether reported interest in Burnley’s veteran shot-stopper, Joe Hart, held any truth. Hay gave these two responses: “I was told today of a Premier League keeper who Leeds are looking at closely. Need to check it out a bit more but I strongly suspect they’ll be on the look-out – as well as taking Meslier permanently. “I haven’t had any reliable confirmation of interest in Hart. Another PL keeper was mentioned to me today, although I need to check that out a little more. Someone more suited to Bielsa’s style.” The situation between the sticks will be an interesting conundrum for Marcelo Bielsa to solve this summer. There are doubts over the future of Kiko Casilla following his lengthy ban for racism whilst backup glovesman Illan Meslier is only on loan – but Hay does hint that Leeds would like him permanently alongside this mystery top-flight man. IS IT HAALAND SNR OR DAVID HOPKINS? 'It won’t be a problem': Phil Hay reveals Leeds' plans regarding versatile defender - originally posted on Sportslens.com Leeds United will have to take some big decisions in the next few months. However, all of those are somehow inextricably linked to achieving promotion. Promotion to the Premier League will almost guarantee Marcelo Bielsa’s long-term future at the cub. After that, they will also act quickly to deal with the situation of players who are either on loan or whose contracts are expiring. According to Phil Hay of The Athletic, Leeds United want Gaetano Berardi to stay but as of now there hasn’t been any deal agreed with the player. The 31-year-old versatile defender has a contract at the club till June 30. Obviously, the remaining fixtures won’t be completed before that period. Hay claims that Leeds will agree a short-term extension to cover the remaining matches with the Switzerland defender. However, a substantial renewal will depend on whether Leeds secure promotion to the Premier League. The best part is – both Leeds and Bielsa want the player to stay. He could be tempted to go back to Italy, but the offer of Premier League football is equally attractive to him. However, Berardi probably won’t stay with Leeds if they fail to secure promotion. The 31-year-old has made 17 appearances in the Championship this season. Hay wrote for The Athletic: “My understanding is that as the first port of call, he and the club will agree a short-term extension to cover the remaining matches. It won’t be a problem. After that, a more substantial renewal might depend on which division Leeds are in.” From Sportslens.com - Football News | Football Blog #GaetanoBerardi #LeedsUnited #PhilHay

Leeds United fans have flocked to one of Phil Hay’s tweets this week after he shared an emerging story from his employers, The Athletic. The piece in question is by David Ornstein and involves club medics warning the Premier League that they believe a return to football isn’t safe whatsoever, and this obviously will have the same effect to Championship clubs such as the Whites. THE SINGLE TOUGHEST FOOTBALL LOGO QUIZ OF ALL TIME… WORLD CLASS SCORE: 95% | EXPERT SCORE: 80% | VETERAN SCORE: 65% | INTERMEDIATE SCORE: 45% | AMATEUR SCORE: 30% | TRY AGAIN: 5% He claims that doctors have written to the top-flight seeking urgent answers and raising concerns surrounding any comeback to match action. With Leeds’ promotion chances hanging in the balance, much of the Elland Road faithful have chimed in with their thoughts on the matter. Marcelo Bielsa’s side currently sit top of the Championship standings, holding a seven-point cushion over those in the playoff positions and had looked like ending their 16-year absence from England’s elite division. The EFL have constantly maintained that they would like to resume the season when it is safe to do so, but time appears to be running out after Rick Parry’s deadline of the end of July. It remains to be seen if football will continue – and whether or not Leeds will be promoted. The Athletic’s Phil Hay has suggested on Twitter that finishing the Premier League season without relegation would be “an embarrassment on numerous levels”, which has drawn an interesting reaction from many Leeds United fans. English football has been suspended for nearly two months and it now seems as if we may be moving toward a decision on if, how, and when the 2019/20 campaign will be concluded. It is understood that Premier League clubs are set to vote on the terms of ‘Project Restart’ on Friday, though it appears there is some opposition to it. A report from the Mirror has claimed that the bottom six sides in the division spoke out against the current conditions proposed, which include playing games at neutral venues. According to BBC Sport, a growing number of sides would be willing to play at neutral venues if the threat of relegation was removed. Understandably, there has been some significant objections to the idea of playing out the rest of the season without promotion. Hay appears to be one such objector and took to Twitter yesterday to share an article on the topic from his colleague at The Athletic and voice his thoughts on the matter. Super Adam Crafton on the money here – Premier League games without relegation would be an embarrassment on numerous levels:https://t.co/trsLeSo7Lp — Phil Hay (@PhilHay_) May 5, 2020 Leeds are top of the Championship as things stand and looked frontrunners for promotion before the delay to the season. Removing Premier League relegation could endanger their chances of securing promotion and it appears a topic that Whites supporters are passionate about. Has Kalvin Phillips done these 12 things at Leeds United? Have a go now! Many Leeds fans took to Twitter to back Hay’s claim and express their own annoyance at the proposal. Read their reaction here: This whole situation is just depressing. “Sporting integrity” has been cast aside completely and self interest is running wild. The prem fees increasingly like an old boy’s club and the door is closed. — Tom Yeadon (@Yeadon1) May 5, 2020 Thing is Phil, realistically Liverpool have as good as won the league…I cant see there being european football if were being sensible….so removing relegation turns it into a procession — Adam Barlow (@AdamPaulBarlow) May 5, 2020 Exactly-my point all along. Play the remaining fixtures in a relatively short space of time-relegation & promotion issues resolved.Clubs without fear of going down put potential playoff clubs in trouble. 9 games-up & downs must remain. I would also stress the precedent any removal of relegation, voiding season would set for clubs to claim in future years against disruption to avoid the consequences of the competition they agreed to play within. Finish in best safest conditions or PPG — Robie (@TheRealRobNeal) May 5, 2020 Absolutely spot on this — CM (@ChrisMoulds01) May 5, 2020 I’m all for sticking all six clubs in non league and promoting the top 6 in the championship. Phil Hay has confirmed that Leeds United will hand out promotion bonuses to players, coaching staff and other club employees if Premier League football is achieved. Leeds are currently sitting top of the Championship table with nine games of the season remaining, knowing promotion back to the Premier League is within grasp. The outbreak of Covid-19 has brought the world to a standstill, however, with the EFL season postponed until further notice. That’s put Leeds’ promotion push on hold for the time being, but when things resume, Leeds will be looking to kick-on clear of Fulham, who currently sit third and are the biggest threat to the Whites and West Brom. And, Hay has revealed on Twitter that if promotion is achieved, ‘promotion bonuses’ will be handed out to Marcelo Bielsa’s playing staff and coaching staff, as well as other members of staff within Elland Road. promotion bonuses. Will be owed to players, coaching staff, other club employees. — Phil Hay (@PhilHay_) April 8, 2020 There’s some tough fixtures standing in Leeds’ way when the season resumes, with Fulham still to visit Elland Road. Additionally Leeds will travel to Cardiff City and Derby County, as well as welcoming Barnsley to Elland Road for a Yorkshire derby. QUIZ: Where did these 15 Leeds United players join the club from? The Verdict This is a nice touch from Andrea Radrizzani, with the financial impact of promotion set to be spread around the people that will have made it happen. Leeds United fans have been left in a frenzy after The Athletic’s Phil Hay delivered a bold statement to Twitter on Friday afternoon. The ever-reliable Whites reporter lauded Spurs and their new stadium following an article from one of his colleagues, Charlie Eccleshare, and accompanied the praise with a pondering Leeds moving into one of their own. I love the rough edge of Elland Road and would miss it if Leeds United ever decamped to a new ground. (@bandforgood) April 3, 2020 I’d love a Redeveloped Elland Road. — Andy Dent (@Thedentsmaster) April 3, 2020 Thing is, if Leeds gets to premiership then another 20,000 fans wanting a seat, it’s inevitable they might look elsewhere for 60,000 stadium — Ingo (@ibrocksom) April 3, 2020 You can’t take anything away from spurs here, unbelievable ground. I wouldn’t be complaining if we got a new ground with a bar stretching the length of the south stand or kop mind you — Jack (@JackSnowey) April 3, 2020 We will end up with a new ground in one form/location or another. Most people don’t want the (1970s) run down loos etc of certain parts of the ground and the future will arrive soon enough. Hopefully the ground will be improved to a high standard so the ‘feel’ will always remain — Gary James (@thsexychocolate) April 3, 2020 Be careful what you wish for. Spurs also got staff furloughed by a billionaire owner while CEO Levy is paid £7m a year. New stadium for #lufc? Possibly. But only if we can keep our soul. Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips will be a man in demand this summer, which should come as a surprise to nobody at Elland Road, but how much would the club let him go for? Phil Hay reveals his insight… WHAT’S HE SAID? The 24-year-old is one of the key cogs of Marcelo Bielsa’s system, playing the lynchpin role at defensive midfield and his specialised qualities have quite rightly attracted interest from some big dogs – most notably Tottenham Hotspur. STUCK IN ISOLATION? OUR MEGA FOOTY QUIZ WILL CURE ANY BOREDOM… WORLD CLASS SCORE: 95% | EXPERT SCORE: 80% | VETERAN SCORE: 65% | INTERMEDIATE SCORE: 45% | AMATEUR SCORE: 30% | TRY AGAIN: 5% Whilst Manchester United and Wolves have also been linked to Phillips in the past. Speaking in a recent Q&A on The Athletic, Hay responded to a fan’s question asking about the price these keen parties would have to pay to land the impressive Englishman. He said: BIELSA’S TALISMAN The 5 foot 9 ace started his career as a box-to-box runner until the Argentine took the reins at Elland Road, and he’s not looked back since. Just this season alone, he’s been absolutely vital to Leeds’ success on the pitch, which has seen them rise to the top of the Championship standings with a healthy seven-point gap to the dreaded playoffs. Per WhoScored, Phillips is averaging a monstrous 5.3 longballs per game whilst keeping up an accuracy rate of 81.6% – this is hugely indicative on his talents. The industrious midfielder is also recording 1.9 key passes, 2.8 tackles and 1.3 interceptions each match too. You’d have to feel that even £20m is on the low scale of his worth, especially when Jarred Bowen joined West Ham for £22m in January whilst James Maddison cost Leicester City only £20m. Leeds United fans have been suggesting names for their Player of the Season, which has led to The Athletic’s Phil Hay making a bold claim about one member of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad… WHAT’S HE SAID? The Whites are sitting pretty at the top of the Championship standings, holding a seven-point advantage to those in the playoffs with just nine games remaining in the season. HILARIOUSLY OBSCURE PREMIER LEAGUE PLAYERS – CAN YOU NAME THEM ALL? WORLD CLASS SCORE: 95% | EXPERT SCORE: 80% | VETERAN SCORE: 65% | INTERMEDIATE SCORE: 45% | AMATEUR SCORE: 30% | TRY AGAIN: 5% Barring a null-and-void season, the west Yorkshire outfit are the only ones standing in the way of a promotion at this stage. Their season so far has been rather phenomenal as they appear set to end a 16-year wait for top-flight football, so understandably there have been plenty of candidates for the award. One supporter offered Kalvin Phillips’ name in a recent Q&A, and Hay replied with the following… TWO TOP TALENTS It’s certainly a bold claim to suggest that City loan star Jack Harrison has been somewhat better than Phillips, but he could be onto something – at least in terms of their progression. The defensive midfielder has been on a meteoric rise ever since Bielsa converted him into that role to the point where England boss Gareth Southgate has scouted him for his Three Lions squad. But Harrison has improved his figures drastically on last season. So far, he has managed one more goal and a massive four more assists whilst also averaging over double the number of key passes per game from just one in 2017/18 to 2.1 this term, via WhoScored. In addition, the 22-year-old has increased his attempts at goal (1.7 shots) as well as doubling the number of dribbles per game (1.8). Either way, both Harrison and Phillips have played instrumental roles for Bielsa and it would be mighty hard to split these two top talents – and that’s excluding the likes of Ben White, Stuart Dallas and Mateusz Klich, too.
