With the wasted natural resource of till receipts in the news I thought I would remind you of this work:
Roll Call by Phil Hackett
Installation 4m x 19.67m
Ink on single ply till roll - 2014
A rolling mass of throwaway paper, each centimetre representing the number of species currently identified as being endangered in the eleven regions/continents of the world as designated by Endangered Earth.
In April 2019 it is estimated that Britons threw away or wasted almost ten billion receipts each year — the equivalent of destroying Sherwood Forest, according to campaigners.
Two out of three receipts are put straight in the bin, with a further one in five lost or too faded to use, amounting to 53,000 trees, wasted, researchers found.

In March 2013, artist and political activist, Gustav Metzger asked the question: “what are you going to do about extinction?”
Phil Hackett’s work ‘Roll Call’ is his response to Gustav Metzger’s challenge – composed of till receipt paper that is rarely recycled, with the name and length printed at eye level in ink using an extinct technology, a 1960’s typewriter, each till roll is named after a region of the world and the length in centimetres is listed which represents the number of species on the endanger of extinction list in that region as designated by Endangered Earth.
1cm = 1 Endangered Species
A rolling mass of throwaway paper, the shortest till roll is for Europe, which I fear is due to the fact that Europe has already made many species extinct rather than having less species at risk of extinction, the most disturbing region is the Hawaiian Islands - they have the greatest number of species at risk of extinction per square mile, and subsequently has its own regional status on Endangered Earth.
