Britney Spears, 2001 •Slave 4U• VMAs

Britney was just 19 years old when she took to the VMAs stage in a cage with a tiger and then later danced with a 25-pound python draped over her shoulders. The performance was so jaw-dropping that it helped shoot "I'm A Slave 4 U" up the Billboard Hot 100 charts and gained huge media attention.

“I'm a Slave 4 U" was written and produced by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, best known as The Neptunes, who also collaborated with Spears on another album track, "Boys", for her self-titled third album, "Britney".

After reading the lyrics for the first time, Spears stated it talks "about me just wanting to go out and forget who I am and dance and have a good time. That's kinda where I am now right now. I love working, but at the same time, I love having a good time." The song was a huge departure from the candy pop of previous hits - the progressive electronic production sound was decorated with her provocative moaning and breathy vocals and scratching. The soundscape of the song has been noted to be similar to Prince’s Vanity 6 1982 song "Nasty Girl".

This performance would later become one of the most enduring and iconic moments of her touring act and her Las Vegas residency.
