This Golden-headed Quetzal male has arrived at its nest hole with a katydid in its bill. The male and female Golden-headed Quetzal have been observed carrying small tree frogs, katydids and aguacatillo fruits Persea caerulea Lauaceae to the nest to feed their nestlings. The nest is in a hole on the side of a dead tree trunk in a field adjacent to forest on a mountainside close to Mindo, Ecuador. This photo is from the morning of August 16, 2013. The Golden-headed Quetzal is a species with a fairly extensive geographical range, being found from southern Panama southward to Bolivia.
