This Golden-headed Quetzal male has arrived at its nest hole with a katydid in its bill. The male and female Golden-headed Quetzal have been observed carrying small tree frogs, katydids and aguacatillo fruits Persea caerulea Lauaceae to the nest to feed their nestlings. The nest is in a hole on the side of a dead tree trunk in a field adjacent to forest on a mountainside close to Mindo, Ecuador. This photo is from the morning of August 16, 2013. The Golden-headed Quetzal is a species with a fairly extensive geographical range, being found from southern Panama southward to Bolivia. HabitatAndBehaviorShow Golden-headed quetzals occur in the Andes of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. They live in humid highland forests and are uncommon to locally fairly common. They are solitary, seasonally monogamous birds which share the 18-day incubation period of their two eggs and the feeding of their offspring during the fledging period of 25 to 30 days. The nest is usually placed in a hollow in an old tree. Their diet mostly consists of fruit and insects, with the occasional small lizard.
