#YearofRabbit California Policy Dream List for Working Families
One year ago, I joined the Working Families Party to expand its organizing to the largest state in the nation- California. Tasked with the goal of activating an electorate which overwhelmingly voted for Bernie Sanders for President in 2020 and identifying and winning candidates who actually represent the working families of California, we got to work.
California Working Families Party endorsed 59 candidates in the 2022 election cycle and hosted more than 300 events– doorknocking, phonebanks, text banks and virtual townhalls to support them. In a promising story of California’s future, 56 of our WFP endorsed candidates identify as people of color and the majority are women.
In our inaugural year, eight California Working Families Squad Legislators, committed to fight for tenant protections, climate justice and fair wages won, expanding our corporate free squad in Sacramento from two to eight. While Democrats dominate California, too many legislators have sided with big money, choosing Big Oil or Big Pharma over the health of our communities. In fact, Big Oil (more on this later), is the biggest political spender in California funding 78 out 120 state legislators.
Six Working Families mayoral candidates won, Karen Bass for Los Angeles Mayor, Paloma Aguirre for Imperial Beach Mayor, Ulises Cabrera for Moreno Valley Mayor, Eduardo Martinez for Richmond City Mayor, and Rex Richardson for Long Beach City Mayor and Sheng Thao for Oakland Mayor. (Check out our GOTV Rally for Karen Bass for Los Angeles Mayor with Senator Bernie Sanders co-hosted by the California Working Families Party!)
California WFP also backed progressive champions for Board of Supervisors, City Council and Board of Education races to impact local communities and build a pipeline of candidates for higher office. This is a promising bench in California where three out of four eligible voters under 30 is a person of color.
California Policy Dream List 2023-2024
“Liberals want to do nice things. And progressives understand that you have to take on powerful special interests to make it happen.” U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders
Winning office is not our goal. Winning a Working Families policy agenda which lifts all working Californians is our goal. As we enter #YearofRabbit, a zodiac animal known for steadily moving towards their goal, here’s my California Policy Dream List- winnable, fundable + impactful.
1. Grow our California Squad to 20 by 2026, ensuring corporate free, Working Families champions make up ⅙ of our California legislature.
While this may seem small, a group of 20 courageous and energetic leaders can move an agenda while activating and organizing our base. They can shine a light on the corporate backed legislative agenda and introduce a peoples first policy agenda to positively impact the lives of everyday Californians.
2. Medicare for *ALL* Kids
At least 4M children across our nation lack access to health care today. While our ultimate goal is Medicare for ALL, starting with children is a good start. Imagine a world where all newborn babies, rich and poor, go home with a name, birth certificate and health insurance.
Providing children with health care is relatively cheap. The average child's medical needs, including vaccines and checkups, are routine, low-cost and preventative. Children make up a quarter of the U.S. population, but generate less than 12% of total health care spending and children would improve Medicare’s financial profile by lowering average costs.
Guaranteeing coverage for all kids would benefit all families– low-income and working-class families would be enrolled automatically without paperwork or expensive outreach and education programs in multiple languages. Medicaid is currently the third-largest anti-poverty program, responsible for raising 2 to 3M people out of poverty— reducing medical debt and bankruptcies. Medicare for Kids is also a subsidy to middle-class families who currently spend money on co-pays for visits and medication and sometimes significant or unaffordable deductibles. In fact, private health care does not guarantee access to care when out of pocket costs effectively eliminate access. In addition, all children will get continuous, uninterrupted care with a familiar doctor instead of getting yanked in and out of coverage due to parent’s change of employment, job loss or change in income.
Finally, we will raise a generation of voters who will not view Medicare as a socialist fantasy or nightmare but a generation which will have normalized a single payer healthcare system.
Oh, it’s also popular. According to a 2019 poll by Data for Progress poll, 80% of registered Democrats support Medicare for Kids.
3. Take on Big Oil
Big Oil is the biggest political spender in California, yet most voters in our blue state are unaware of the power the industry holds in Sacramento. 78 out of 120 California legislators, Republicans and Democrats, accepted oil money. California is the 7th largest oil producing state and continues to approve fracking permits as wildfires and smoke choke our communities. Worse, over 7M Californians live within one mile of an active oil well, putting them at greater risk of asthma, cancer and early births.
After a decade of organizing, this past September, the California legislature finally passed a bill (SB 1137) to ban NEW oil drilling within 3200 feet of homes, schools and playgrounds and within days, Big Oil announced they were gathering signatures to repeal this bill. Other billionaire corporations also unhappy with policies to support workers, gathered signatures to overturn AB 257, a first in nation bill to establish sectoral bargaining for fast food workers. Both have qualified for the November 2024 ballot.
We can defeat those pro-corporate ballot initiatives and go on offense. Finally tired of $8/gallon headlines, Democrats announced they would introduce a bill to penalize oil price gouging. Financial reports revealed that the five companies producing 97% of all of California’s oil and gas, quadrupled their profits in the first nine months of 2022. California had the highest gouge gap in the nation–billions of dollars went from the pocketbooks of hardworking Californians only to enrich billionaire CEO’s and shareholders. It’s time to fight back.
4. Raise the Minimum Wage: One Job Should Be Enough
The Fight for 15 had real, measurable impacts on workers' pay. This January, California’s minimum wage rose to $15.50 and an estimated 5.6M Californians will earn at least $20B more, an amount larger than all of California’s major public assistance programs combined.
Yet, we have still not kept up with the living wage needed across California. There is not a single county where a minimum wage worker can afford to rent a two bedroom apartment for themselves and their family. New York and Rhode Island introduced $21/hour and Idaho and Massachusetts introduced $20/hour. California can and should continue to lead this fight for minimum wage workers, the vast majority of whom are women.
And we should raise the minimum wage for all workers including incarcerated inmates who currently make pennies on the hour for jobs which include fighting California’s wildfires.
5. Tax Extreme Wealth
During the pandemic, billionaires grew $2 trillion while millions of Americans filed for unemployment or risked their lives as essential workers. 44% of that wealth grew in California alone. California has the most billionaires and the highest poverty rate in the nation. This is a policy failure.
In month, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New York and Washington all introduced a Wealth Tax on the extreme rich. The California Wealth Tax is modeled on US Senator Elizabeth Warren's, specifically targeting extreme wealth over $50M and $1B. If passed, it would generate $22.3B/year for California. California has one of the most progressive income tax rates in the country, effectively taxing for example, a rich doctor who primarily earns their money through income. However, the wealthiest Californians report very little income– avoiding taxes on the vast majority of their wealth. We should remedy this inequity and tax all wealth.
5. Free Bus Pilots
It is exciting to see cities such as Washington DC and Boston pilot fare free bus programs while New York legislators consider similar proposals. Free bus programs make public transportation more accessible, encourage people to ride instead of drive, reduce congestion and pollution, and disproportionately benefit low-income individuals and families (again without the hassle of paperwork, expensive outreach programs and bureaucratic income verification). Imagine cities which provide free buses for residents and visitors to ride to work, school and play!
California is changing
Over the next decade, we are going to see the continued growth and power of California voters currently under 45. And they are disproportionately people of color and immigrants.
California is ready to lead a working families agenda for the nation. There is a growing base of multiracial, cross-class voters that want to tackle widening wealth inequality, the untenable affordability crisis, and wildfires turning our communities to ash. Our challenge is to organize that base of voters into a movement that can make this wish list a reality and deliver for the people.

@stlamb In my experience (in the last few months since joining Tumblr), this website is mostly for taking a kernel of truth & forging it into the most hyperbolic, extremist opinion possible. Lo! Behold the takes I have observed on this hellsite:
• Don't encourage people to go to therapy, because therapists can forcibly institutionalize people, and it disproportionately happens to marginalized communities.
• All doctors are bastards (because I was misdiagnosed), and SSRIs are a scam by big pharma (because they personally made my symptoms worse)
• Stop saying Autistic people are caring & empathetic in their own way, even though it's hard for them to communicate. Many autistic people completely lack empathy at all, and that's fine because you don't need empathy to be a good person.
• NASA should engineer things to be shittier & cheaper like the Soviets, because the mars rover missions were considered successful after 90 days so why did we even need all that engineering & all those safety standards?
• We need to ban all public photography; if you don't you're abelist & "I hope you slit your throat & drown in your own blood" (actual quote)
• Racism was caused by capitalism, and if there was no capitalism there would be no racism. Also, poor people don't have the power to oppress black people.
• Walkable cities are abelist and if you want to remove cars you're a eugenicist
• COVID is still a pandemic, and if you hold any event in 2023 without mandatory masks, you are a eugenicist.
• Under communism, if the sewer system got clogged, a group of volunteers from the community would immediately arise to go down there & bust up the poop iceberg.
And this is even before Oct. 7th Hamas attack on Israel. I thought Tumblr folks had extreme opinions before, but buckle the fuck up.
In summary, I can't wait to see what 2024 holds. Especially as a US presidential election year, I'm sure we're all in store for some insightful & nuanced takes.
i'm seeing a lot of new ppl join tumblr who aren't making any spontaneous semi pathetic, oversharing personal textposts whatsoever and i just want to say you're doing it all wrong... this is not like instagram like meant to be some shiny highlight reel used to make u look good its supposed to be an incriminatingly revealing dark intimate look into your life & inner psyche while simultaneously no one knows who u are or gives a fuck... anyway hope this helps some of u get on the right track

Comedian Whitney Cummings' Viral CNN NYE Roast Of Biden, Harris, Big Pharma And More Prompts Democrat Backlash
(L) Whitney Cummings visits the SiriusXM Studios on December 17, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by Cindy Ord/Getty Images) / (R-Top) Anderson Cooper attends the 16th annual CNN Heroes. (Photo by Mike Coppola/Getty Images for CNN) / (R-Bottom) Andy Cohen takes part in SiriusXM’s 10th Annual Radio Andy Holiday Hangout at SiriusXM Studios on December 19, 2024 in New York City.
CNN’s annual New Year’s Eve program included a brief comedy roast by Whitney Cummings, who took shots at President Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, pharmaceutical companies, celebrities, and more, unraveling a can of worms for the comedian as left-wing Americans expressed outrage over uncomfortable truths.
Democrats swiftly rushed to social media platforms after the 42-year-old comedian, who appeared on CNN’s NYE Live special with hosts Anderson Cooper, the son of Gloria Vanderbilt, and Andy Cohen, executive producer of “The Real Housewives” franchise, made scathing remarks directed at the network, the U.S. government, and other well-known figures, industries, and organizations.
Since CNN is among the many mainstream media outlets that have been accused of partisan bias in favor of the Democrat Party, as well as President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris over the years, it made the roast even more comical and culturally significant.
At one point during the roast, Cummings remarked that “the Democrats couldn’t hold a primary … [as] they were too busy holding a body upright.”
This bit alludes to 82-year-old President Biden, critiquing his extremely poor performance in the 2024 presidential debate against Trump and his ongoing gaffes, senility, and overall mental decline throughout his presidential term.
“I’m now playing like 3,000 seat theaters, which is about the viewership of CNN these days,” she added.
From under his umbrella, it was difficult to see Cooper’s reaction, who didn’t seem to have much of a sense of humor as it was at the expense of his network and politics, but his more light-hearted co-host, Cohen, made an apparent “mock shocked” look before Cummings asks, “are we still rolling, am I off?”
With a faint smile, Cohen responds, “Go for it!”
“It was amazing that the ‘pro-choice party’ didn’t give their voters one when it came to the presidential candidate,” Cummings added at one point, pointing out the hypocrisy of the Democrat Party. She then adds, “Kamala was forced on us so hard you’d think she was patented by Pfizer.”
The clip went viral almost immediately, with media figures, conservative commentators, and incoming Trump administration colleagues sharing it on X, seemingly relishing the chance to attack a network that has condemned the GOP for as long as one can remember.
Cummings also noted that there were a number of happenings in 2024 that “brought everyone together,” joking, “We all agreed we’d rather see J-Lo in a toxic relationship than in concert.” “We all agreed that the government totally knows what the drones are and aren’t telling us. They’re still up, and we have no idea what’s behind them? I mean, they’re still up in the sky, so I guess we can rule out that they were made by Boeing.” “Are we still rolling? This is wild,” Cummings continued. “Boy Scouts of America, they renamed themselves Scouting America. You know who else changed their name? Sean Combs. Just saying… let’s learn something in 2025.”
This particular bit was referencing how in 2024, the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a temporary halt placed on the Boy Scouts of America’s $2.46 billion settlement with its slew of purported sexual assault victims. This joke piggybacks the “Sean Combs” reference, as that was the original name that P. Diddy went by prior to being accused of underage grooming and sexual assault in 2024.
After liberals and leftists began to attack and condemn Cummings online, she shared a number of explanatory posts that strived to explain her position.
“For the dorks who are grumpy that I didn’t roast Trump in the CNN set, I roasted trump so long ago (I think 2011?) on Comedy Central – and to do that on CNN would be fish in a barrel, a home court advantage cheap shot. There’s no risk in that.,” she said on X, referencing her 2011 Comedy Central roast of Donald Trump, which the president-elect agreed to attend in good fun. Trump also roasted Cummings back later in the program. “I mean please list the lies I told?” Whitney added on X, continuing to receive liberal backlash.

Rapacious Health Fund CEO Gunned Down
Only in America, the land of unchecked greed and guns, do you half expect these sort of things. Rapacious health fund CEO gunned down in New York city. The assassin had marked his bullets with the words ‘deny’, ‘defend’ and ‘depose’. These are the insurer’s mantra when refusing payouts to policy holders. Brian Thompson was the CEO of United Healthcare a company on target to make $450 billion revenue this financial year. This is America where healthcare is first and foremost about profitability for investors and executives. I suspect that this way of doing business has made the company plenty of enemies.
Is The Killing Of Healthcare CEO Revenge?
The response on social media to the killing has been less than overly sympathetic to the victim. Americans are, it seems, primed for violence. The US health system is a deeply unfair, expensive, and flawed array of the worst that America has to offer its citizens. “Animosity was expressed from avowed socialists to right-wing activists suspicious of the so-called "deep state" and corporate power. It also came from ordinary people sharing stories about insurance firms denying their claims for medical treatments. Recent Commonwealth Fund research found that 45% of insured working-age adults were charged for something they thought should have been free or covered by insurance, and less than half of those who reported suspected billing errors challenged them. And 17% of respondents said their insurer denied coverage for care that was recommended by their doctor.” (https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cm2eeeep0npo) Everything in America is about making money, over and above, what those sectors are there for. The financialization of healthcare via private equity takeovers of hospitals has seen care rates plummet and consumer costs go way up. People are angry and some of them are armed.

Disgruntled Consumers Are Not Going To Take It Anymore
I have been sounding the alarm about civil unrest for some time now. You cannot keep screwing people and not expect a backlash. The wealth divide in the US is extreme and the same thing is happening in Australia. Neoliberalism and its economic policies have accelerated inequity and inequality around the globe. Rapacious corporate executives and their boards are overseeing the plundering of the middle class. Everything costs more and competition has been removed from the market meaning consumers have no buying power. Governments and their agencies are complicit in this, as they have been bought off with campaign donations and promises of well paid jobs via the revolving door. Medical Profession Disgraced By Purdue Pharma Rapaciousness Violence is not condoned by right thinking individuals but neither is the disconnect between rapacious money making and people’s lives. For profit private enterprise should not be involved in healthcare. The sector is not best served by greedy capitalists. We have seen how the medical profession in America was bought off by Purdue Pharma with lies and incentives to prescribe their deadly addictive pain killers. This has resulted in millions of lives destroyed across America. “April 17, 2024 – The U.S. health care system is “totally broken,” according to Sen. Bernie Sanders. Speaking to members of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health community on April 12, Sanders, an Independent senator from Vermont, explained why the system doesn’t work. “It is a system not designed to provide health care to all people in a cost-effective way,” he said. “It is a system designed to make huge profits for the insurance companies, the drug companies, and many other industries within the system.” “ (https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/features/bernie-sanders-describes-dysfunctional-u-s-health-care-system-and-how-to-fix-it/) Robert Sudha Hamilton is the author of Bite & Smile – his brand new book which has just been published. https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0DPM9WS6K ©WordsForWeb https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0DPM9WS6K Read the full article
