one of the things about the trends and the body image and all of it is that. you can't unsee it. and it doesn't matter that you know logically it's stupid and that logically any person who has a problem with your body can fuck off and die, but it's almost like gore. you flinch even knowing the blood onscreen is fake. you sense a pain that was invented. your body creates the phantom sensation - this thing should be avoided. so okay.

it's not that you won't wear the skinny jeans or the choker or whatever isn't "in style" anymore. and sometimes the demands are so buckwild that you can just ignore them, plain and simple.

but you do think twice sometimes. you do notice things about yourself you hadn't even considered. you notice the hip dips and the shape of your cheekbone and the skin over your eyes. it's been pointed out to you - so you notice. and sometimes it's like fuck you i look fucking amazing and sometimes it's like nobody even remembers that being a thing probably and sometimes - it's fucking devastating. like someone drew a bright red circle around each insecurity. on those days, you wonder - does anyone else see?

because the blame is on you either way. you have a terrible catch-22. if you want to fit in, it's on you to be sure that you look good, that your makeup isn't the "heinous" 2016 style (even if that's the style that flatters you), that your bodyfat settles in the appropriate landmap. and at the same time: it is also on you to ignore the programming. it is on you to get over your decades of social exposure to a trillion-dollar industry and just not care! about these things.

in the comments of course there are people who would advise you nothing with nuance. just ignore it! sure. nobody actually cares about these things. absolutely. this isn't how normal people look. of course not, you know that. you weren't born yesterday. you know about the photoshop and the pricetag and the brand manager.

but like. the media still exists. there are videos on how to manage your hip dips (your skeleton. you know it's your skeleton, and it doesn't matter, does it, because it has a name now, doesn't it?) and how to finally correctly wear the clean-girl-trend and how to have enough money to wear the latest "casual outfit". there are videos critiquing your entire generation for how you dress. how "cringe" it is to wear a certain style of necklace. an influencer says - let's be honest! nobody cares if you just have confidence!

but people do care. you've seen it. you know they care. you've been made fun of enough. it's not, like, a horrible sin to just want to fit in. it's not saying anything new to say i just don't want to be made fun of.

somewhere along here, you learn - your body is more like an accessory. not a home, not a sensation. it is an object like mom jeans or opera gloves. something to manipulate, not something to love.

22. things you said after it was over

Last year, it was Matthew's precious Flames that got punted out of the playoffs. To add insult to injury, it was at the hands of the Oilers. Which is why, that same night, he sent Leon a slew of drunken texts from some dingy downtown bar because he was not in the mood to even look at Leon, let alone go home with him.

Those texts included one declaring they were breaking up, which Leon didn't take to heart because not even five minutes later he got another message assuring him that no they were not actually breaking up Matthew was just going to hate him for the next 48 hours. That, Leon could handle.

Hell, he'd probably have gone for 72 hours. Minimum. And he had to rest his ankle anyways, if he wanted any chance of seeing ice-time the next game. He'd be there when Matthew was ready.

This year, it's the Oilers who go out first.

Leon just barely keeps it together through the post-game media frenzy. He doesn't want to look at the cameras, barely keeps the shudder from his voice, which is little more than a whimper because he just can’t breathe. Hunkered down with his hood up because it feels safe, the only barrier between him and a world that just crushed his dream. Again.

It's not like he can be mad at Matthew, because he fucked off to Florida, a whole other division, so Leon has no excuse for not answering any of his texts, or the six separate times Matthew tried to call after Vegas knocked Edmonton on it's ass.

Only once Leon's back home for the night, drained and exhausted and dazed, refusing to go out with Connor and the guys because he really, really doesn't want to exist right now, does he look at his phone.

Cuddling Bowie in his arms, he sits on the couch and scrolls through the avalanche of texts from Matthew. The last one catches him off guard, and he stares at it, reading it over and over.

come down and see me. please.

And... yeah. Through the doom and gloom of another lost season, he misses Matthew. Matthew, who's season isn't done. Matthew, who doesn't need Leon, but wants him. Wants him to be there.

So Leon books a flight to Florida, and starts packing.

The next day he goes in early for clear-out, says his goodbyes, and drives right to the airport. After an almost nine hour flight--including a layover in Denver that's great for his legs but not his morale--he lands in Fort Lauderdale just as the sun hits the horizon.

Matthew's waiting for him at Arrivals, dressed in board shorts and sandals and button-down shirt, sunglasses and that damn bucket hat. He smiles when he sees Leon, waves, and the simplicity of it chips away at the heavy stone sitting on Leon's chest. He always breathes better when he's with Matthew.

"What, not even a sign?" Leon calls out once he's in earshot. "I thought you were excited to see me?"

Matthew slaps the brim of Leon's hat down over his eyes. "Next time I'll bring confetti canons and air horns."

And fuck, just hearing Matthew's voice again without a phone between them lifts a weight off Leon's shoulders. It almost makes the defeat worth it.

His hands are too empty suddenly. He wants to hold Matthew's, wrap him up in his arms, touch him anywhere and everywhere, inside and out. Replenish old memories, make new ones. Never let go again.

Matthew gets the jump on him once they're in his car, dragging Leon over the center console by his shirt and into a sloppy kiss. It's all tongue and teeth, scratchy beard and plush lips, and as always, it's perfect. This too, aches like a phantom pain when they're on opposite ends of the continent. Phone sex and a bit of imagination with his own hand can't totally replace the sex, but it definitely can't replace the sweetness of a kiss.

When he pulls back, Matthew looks like he's going to immediately drop the one thing Leon really doesn't want to hear--the dreaded I'm sorry about what happened--so he jumps first.

"I missed you."

If Matthew knows he's purposely being cut off, he doesn't show it. He bumps their foreheads together and closes his eyes, like he's just soaking Leon in.

"Missed you too."

As the dusk fades to night, they drive, and drive, and drive. Not to Matthew's house, that's immediately obvious, but Leon doesn't ask where they're going. He slumps in the passenger's seat, leg tucked up against the dashboard, and goes between watching palm trees and glistening waterfront, to watching Matthew.

He tries not to think about hockey, but it was a long and restless flight, and Matthew's got a stupid little air freshener shaped like skates, and the playoffs aren't actually over, so of course the first thing Leon says to break the silence is, "When's your next game?"

Matthew taps his fingers on the steering wheel in time with the music playing on the radio. "Thursday. Against Carolina. We're flying out the day after tomorrow."

"Hmm. So what are we doing with all that time?"

"Fucking, hopefully." Matthew glances sidelong at him, tongue poking between his teeth. "At least for part of it. I still have practice, and you need to relax."

"What am I doing while you're gone?"

"Waiting for me to come back? You can stay at my place. Come to the games when we're at home. My family's going to drop in too, so, you know, be prepared for that."

Won't be Leon's first tangle with the Tkachuks. Pretty sure he's an honorary member of the family at this point, even if he still struggles to keep up with the energy they bring to a room. Not that he minds.

The rest of the drive is quiet enough that Leon dozes off. When he wakes up, groggy with jet lag, it's dark aside from the street lights, and Matthew is pulling into a parking lot up from a small, deserted beach. Leon doesn't know which one; there's so many here. He follows Matthew out of the car and down the promenade, down the stone steps to the sand, where grains slip between his toes and the sound of the waves soothes the storm in his own head.

Which is exactly why Matthew brought him here; somewhere secluded, somewhere that can't hurt him. Because Leon loves the ocean, and Matthew loves him.

He follows Matthew along the beach, going nowhere in particular. Matthew walks purposefully nonetheless, head high and shoulders back, warm breeze tugging at his clothes and ruffling his curls. Something Leon loves to do too, and can't wait to do again.

This place looks good on Matthew. If only it weren't so far away.

"I'm glad you came," Matthew says over his shoulder, slowing until Leon catches up. "I wasn't sure you would."

Why not? The year-round heat and the beaches and the seemingly endless bars are a nice change of pace. But more importantly, this is where Matthew is. Of course he was going to come.

"Beats sitting around re-watching the second round wondering what we could have done differently," Leon says instead, because it's true, and because he doesn't need to tell Matthew what he already knows.

"Hey, that's not a bad thing. But it's not what you need right now." Matthew swallows, takes an uneven breath like he's the one getting choked up. "I saw your interview yesterday. After the game. Leon, you know I didn't call you down here for me, right? Don't get me wrong, I'd fucking love for you to be here watching us play, but the way you sounded... I was worried you'd end up sitting around your house all alone and depressed."

"I'm not depressed. And I wasn't going to. I was planning on going back home."

"Great, so you can mope around in Germany instead."

"I wouldn't have been alone."

"Much as I love Bowie, he doesn't count, babe."

Leon stops walking, staring at the sand until Matthew stops too, turning back and right into Leon's space to block the wind, which has taken on a chill.

"Leon--"

"Our season's over, Matthew," he mutters. "I really thought we could... I didn't want it to end here."

Matthew sighs, but his eyes are sympathetic. "Yeah. I know. But you're not done. There's always next year. And a bunch more after that."

The same platitudes, every time. It's empty words. Leon knows it. Matthew knows it. But what else is there to say? You fall, you get back up, you try again. Rinse and repeat. That's what this league is.

In any other circumstance, Matthew would probably make some crack about the Oilers and how assuming you guys can actually get your shit together, you may have a chance, but it's, you know, fucking Edmonton, so...

But he's being kind for Leon's sake. Because Matthew's forked tongue turns to silk when he's off the ice. He's so gentle at times like this, handling Leon with kid gloves like he thinks he'll shatter if he so much as breathes too hard.

"I'm just getting tired of it always being 'next year'," Leon admits easily, because it is easy with Matthew. "Every time we come close, we get knocked down. It feels like shit. I'm fucking tired of it."

Every time he climbs the ladder, he tastes victory. The higher the wrung, the sweeter it is. And every time he falls, there's a tiny part of him that worries he'll never get his feet off the ground again.

"Hey." Matthew cups his cheek, forcing Leon to look him in the eye, into pale blues that dance and shine even in the dark. "You're not giving up on me, are you?"

The question catches him so off guard Leon jerks like he's been struck.

"What? No. Fuck no. The hell kind of question is that?"

Quitting has never even crossed his mind. He didn't come into this league thinking it would be easy. He's worked his ass off to get where he is, and sure he's got his own liabilities to work through, but he'll keep going until something gives out.

"Good. Just making sure." Matthew looks so damn smug, but Leon's learned to find that endearing too. "Only place left to go is up, right?"

Right. Leon said something like that to Matthew, once. You win or you lose. Only two options. If you lose, then all you can do next time is win. If you win, you keep winning until you make it to the top. Anger into action, failure into fortune.

Matthew's hand slips down Leon's forearm, searching for his hand, but stops when Leon flinches, and brushes a callused thumb back and forth over the bruise there.

"This from Pietrangelo?"

Leon huffs. "Maniac, yeah. It's fine. It wasn't as bad as it looked."

"Want me to rough him up a little if I see him down the line? My treat. Actually, it'd be my pleasure."

There's that blinding confidence. The Matthew that's going to ensure they blow right past Carolina, through Dallas or Vegas, and raise the Cup. Who's dumb enough to argue with him?

"If you want." Leon's almost too tired to smile, but he tries anyways.

And Matthew softens too, cheeks pinked and teeth showing between his parted lips. It's hard to think back to a time when he would never look at Leon like this; like he's so fucking in love with him it's physically impossible to hide it. Leon can only imagine how he looks to Matthew.

"I'll make you another deal while we're at it," Matthew says.

"A deal or a promise?" Leon knows what's coming, because he knows Matthew. His heart still jumps up into his throat.

"I'll win the Cup for you."

They've learned to say I love you in a million different ways. Somehow, they keep finding new ones.

It's so stupid. Matthew's not arrogant. But then again, he seems to be playing a game no one else is, in a way no one else can. He oozes confidence and bleeds charisma, possesses the kind of karma that can change destinies.

If anyone could actually say it, and do it, it's Matthew. Damn if Leon doesn't believe it, too.

So all he has to do is smile, nod, and say, "Okay."

"Just to be clear," Matthew says, "I'm not doing it for the Oilers. I'm doing it for you. And for me and the Cats, obviously. Maybe... maybe a little more for me and the Cats. No offence, babe."

Leon snorts. "It's fine. It's yours. You earned it."

"So have you." Damn right he has. "Shit just sucks sometimes."

Leon scoffs and rolls his eyes to whatever unseeing deity keeps fucking him over. But he's done wallowing. He's got something so much better standing right in front of him.

"You said this was a deal." Leon tugs him closer, one hand cupping the back of Matthew's head, pressing the words against his mouth. "So what do you want from me?"

Matthew smiles under his lips. "I just want you to be there to see it."

Keep Driving

I love him so much. My 1 step plan to make anyone love him is watching him perform.

He said of Keep Driving when he first played it at the NY ONO show:

The screen s when he performed it on love on tour were lover/fine line pink & blue.

Keep Driving is a stream of consciousness, snapshot moments of a life, interspersed with asking his love if they should continue, noting they have overcome hard times. The tempo is important, it becomes more disjointed and chaotic when he is distracted and it calms and returns to a happy pace when he communicates with his love, checking in how they are. The question is almost rhetorical, he wants to continue and is reminding himself to not lose the connection with his muse.

Harry and Taylor have sung about communication and being tongue tied a lot, so Keep Driving is important growth. To me, it sounds like the way Harry posts to social media, seemingly random things that hold meaning to him. It could almost be 'should I keep scrolling?' as that also speaks to interaction without communication.

The title is a Haylor theme, @womanexile has a post of the times they refer to driving here, which is many of their pivotal songs.

The B&W film camera makes me think of polaroids and Taylor's OOTW line "You took a polaroid of us and discovered the rest of the world was in B&W and we were in screaming colour." A line Harry referenced in his IG feed for 2 years from when that song came out, they were seen at the same place on the dates of most colour photos.

Taylor wore yellow sunglasses and a men's shirt in the 22 MV shoot. The 22 MV also has a with a pool and acting up.

Harry refers to hot wax in Hunger "Candles burnt down to the floor / Wearing less than you wore before"

A small concern with how the engine sounds We held darkness in withheld clouds I would ask, "Should we just keep driving?"

Harry can hear their is a concern with the relationships engine, he notes they have overcome troubles before and rather than running he talks to his partner. Huge progress on communication.

This chorus plays an important role in the tempo and meaning of the song, stopping and talking to each other to ask 'should we keep driving' calms the tempo down, when he and his beloved stop talking and get distracted by the other things it gets chaotic. The message is to communicate. He can see a trouble in the relationship, but they overcome difficult times before, by communicating things calm and it continues.

I Know Places: "Something happens when everybody finds out, see the vultures circling dark clouds" also the Me! MV has their phantom/ghost as a cloud. The Late Night Talking MV also has dark storm clouds at 2:37.

This verse is telling of a private times together, with common breakfast items. Harry has also referred to breakfast in the unreleased Hunger "We would stay in my house for days / Spilling breakfast on pillowcases"

Harry missed his flight before the NYE kiss because he left his passport in his mum's car.

Kiss her and don’t tells is self explanatory, but speaks to the long period of time Harry was dating Taylor and constantly asked about her in interviews. The point he made audiences laughing because he’d say “I think the thing is with songwriting…”

Cyborgs are in the Ready for it Music Video. In the BTS Taylor also (1:25) calls them this. The BTS videos are messing with H, complete with edging the way she speaks and how sassily she says her and Joe's birth years will be together.

So much attention is on the cocaine line here and in daylight. He did have some tiny pupils in late 1D days. To Howard Stern he said "Who ultimately do you want to be at the end of the day?' You don't want to be the guy who died. You don't want to be the guy who's like whacked out on drugs. You want to be the guy who's 70 and playing for three hours because he can, and he wants to, and everyone's loving it, and he's having fun." Gosh I want that for him.

Harry referenced the Seaview in the Adore you video. Taylor and Harry have both referenced sea views, with the Cannes IG posts, the sl*t lyric video and promotion for cruel summer.

There's no sideboob shortage around Mr Styles. OW had some when this song was coming out, but HH was mostly written before before they met. I think this is Taylor at the 2013 People's Choice awards. It was 2 weeks after the boat break up, rumors if there was shading or a hickey, different Red era style. She also had sideboob at the 2013 VMSs when they may have gotten back together.

Taylor chipped a tooth on stage and just acted normal. This happened August 2013 while they dated.

Finally Harry has sung about Coffee three times, always about communication, which is the message of the song: Falling "And the coffee's out / At the Beachwood Café", Music for a Sushi Restaurant "Late night, game time / Coffee on the stove, yeah" and here.

Now that the calendar is over I want to wrap things up with some thoughts and facts about of what have been and what is coming.

In this calendar I've written about 24 series that have meant something to me through my life. There are other series I might actually like more than some of them today, but they've all changed how I see things or how I feel about a certain subject. —-Information: his local theater was his outlet and safe space but nobody ever appreciates it (and especially notices tech theater for all the work they do.) often he invents his own things to make the shows even more amazing; set dressings and robotic things and fantastical inventions !! one such thing would be his hail-mary, a completely fed-up madman losing to his own need to be noticed. after the monstrous accident, he fixed himself and built himself his new form with great hodgepodge difficulty, then decided to never go out into the light of day again- the stage, his world, was the only thing that loved him, the only thing that found him beautiful and recognized him. he watches george and harold, the genius playwrights become more and more successful as their stories come to life, watching, wishing he could be viewed as a beautiful visionary just as that. also captain underpants sings opera. and is krupp when he’s offstage. —-The Accident: he planned a contraption that was a giant wooden puppet dragon, moving across the back of the stage as one of the most outstanding set pieces he'd ever made- hell, it would even breathe fire! it was so stressed against its capabilities that the machinery broke, unable to stop the movement. it careened backstage, running over melvin and causing the phantom's disfigurement; but instead of just his face, it was the entire half of his body. obviously lol. fun fact- in stead of the nonlinear time travel thing happening, the accident happens when melvin is 17 and already well-established. his fate was set in stone.

Let Alex Mercer be the pettiest haunter.

While Luke and Reggie are blasting music and turning on showers to scare people, I think Alex goes a bit subtler. He lives(dies) to cause millions of minor inconveniences. Like taking the ink cartridges out of all of the pens(and I mean all of them). Or unplugging power chords just enough that it looks fine but won't actually charge stuff. Or the water pressure in the shower being really weak for no apparent reason.

When Alex full on haunts someone, he doesn't want them scared, he just wants them annoyed and miserable. So he just makes them have lousy days by messing up all their stuff.

My #1 post of 2022

Hey JatP gang. I know it's been a rough year, both with the show and in people's personal lives. I just wanted to hop on here and say that even if we all drift away to other fixations or hobbies or pieces of media, there will still be a huge piece of my heart here for all of you. In 2023 when Julie throws her cap in the air at her high school graduation, I love you. In 2024, when the band releases their first full album, I love you. In 2025 when Alex and Willie have a small wedding in the Molina garage, I love you. In 2026, when Edge of Great hits platinum, I love you. In 2027 when they start their first world tour, I love you. In 2028 when they win three Grammys, I love you.

And in 2032, when Alex chases Reggie all over their huge studio for saying that he'd be the one to leave in a blowup, I love you.

In 2035 when they release their sixth album, I love you.

In 2041, when Luke is able to stand and speak and hug his dad at Emily's funeral, I love you.

In 2049, when they raise over a billion dollars to help LGBTQ+ youth through a series of charity concerts, I love you.

In 2054 when they play at Ray's retirement party, I love you.

I could keep going, but I think you get the point. This show, this band, and this fandom will live in my heart forever, even if we aren't all still talking 20 years down the road. I love you guys, happy anniversary.

Great Waukesha Phantom Kangaroo Flap

Kangaroos are usually lovable and adorable. But sometimes they can be nasty, especially if you've ever stood in the boxing ring and had one put you in the headlock and proceed to pummel you silly, as had once happened to Milwaukee journalist Jackie Louhauis. But overall, they're not the usual kind of monster that raises goose bumps on the flesh.

Yet kangaroos-or something resembling kangaroos-acquire a powerful aura of mystery when they turn up where they're not supposed to. Add to this intriguing situation humans going about their day-to-day business in ordinary suburbia and weirdness inevitably ensues.

Few realize how strange things were in Waukesha County for a brief period in 1978, when stories of kangaroos on the loose hit the national news media, Starting in mystery and wonder, the whole affair soon degenerated into a wacky farce that went down in legend as one of the Badger State's more bizarre episodes, and that's saying a lot.

The episode began on a perfectly normal day-April 5, 1978, to be exact. Waukesha school-bus driver Patricia Wilcox was the beginning of her morning run on Moreland Boulevard, a busy multilane road, when she reported seeing two kangaroos-one little, one big-hop across the road. "I thought they were deer at first," she related. "People were honking and slamming on their brakes, and finally one guy hit one. But it just got up and hopped off. The skid marks are still there. The guy just got out of the car and stood there, looking."

Seven days later, in the town of Pewaukee, Jill and Peter Haeselich and Peter's mother, Esther, saw a kangaroo in their backyard as they ate dinner. The animal, which was between three and five feet tall, was only fifty feet from their dining-room window. Peter ran outside, but the creature took off very fast toward the south disappearing over a hill. "It was going pretty quick," said Jill. "It was hopping. We knew it had to be a kangaroo."

That same day, William Busch, a social worker, was returning home from the Ethan Allen School for Boys. It was four forty-five p.m., and he was driving on Highway 83, just south of Waukesha. Fifteen feet ahead, a little creature scampered across the road. At first, Busch thought it was a dog. The creature had a slightly odd-shaped head, two short legs in the front, and two long legs in the back. He never called it a kangaroo but reported it in good faith as an example of the crazy local fauna.

On April 16, at three a.m., on County Trunk A about a mile east of Waukesha, Greg and Janet Napeientek spotted a creature in their headlights. "We were pretty close, within about thirty to thirty-five yards," Greg said. "It stood up, and I really couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was four feet tall, colored like a deer. Janet thought at first it was a deer, until it stood up on its hind legs, then jumped over a ditch and fled. She said it was a kangaroo."

In Waukesha, people began joking about the so-called kangaroo sightings. The newspaper ran a photo of two children standing beneath a kangaroo-closing highway sign. Storekeepers put cages out front, advertising $50 rewards for captured kangaroos. Kangaroos T-shirts went on sale. Weird letters to the editor were printed in the newspaper. The kangaroo cocktail-made of vodka, Southern Comfort, cranberry, and grapefruit juice-became the favorite drink around town. As one wag said, "It's guaranteed to keep you hopping." People even started writing bad poetry about kangaroos. One fellow wrote, "Maybe it's like the Bermuda Triangle, man, only it's a kangaroo rectangle." And well-known regional prankster William Woolley, who ran the Woolley Boys Bar, planned a kangaroo hunt on the shores of Pewaukee Lake.

Some fifty hunters gathered on the morning of Saturday, April 22 for the hunt. Many carried long black fishnets, oils of rope, and air horns. Some even wore Aussie bush hats. They were stoked," primed with beer since Friday night." Their theory was that air horns attracted kangaroos, and since kangaroos were afraid of water, the hunters would use the horns to drive the beasts to the lake, where they'd be netted. Clearly, it was a sound methodology.

Bill Woolley, head kangaroo hunter, led the safari in his 1973 white Caddy painted with black zebra stripes. A seventy-five-foot fishnet was strung across the beach. Then a crazy combo of motorcycles, four-wheel-drive vehicles, and human beaters with poles tried flushing the kangaroos from a nearby wood, all the while consuming beer and blasting their air horns. The only kangaroo they encountered was some guy dressed in a costume, who mugged for the cameras and got a ride on the back of a motorcycle. Even his costume was ridiculous, being a hastily transformed dog getup with large ears sewn onto it. The hunt lasted until four p.m., when the fearsome, weary warriors retired to Woolley's to crack a free fresh half-barrel. A good time was had by all!

Unfortunately, the hunters had been beating about the wrong bushes. Had they sober enough to wake early the next morning, Sunday, they would have discovered two kangaroos at the Nero residence. Oddly enough, Lance Nero had laughed his head off the night before as he heard about the ridiculous safari on the local television news. During breakfast, however, he was fiddling a different tune as he watched a pair of three- to-four-foot-tall kangaroos emerge from the woods, hop across County 22, and traverse an open field before disappearing from sight.

Nero stared, amazed, then ran to wake his sleeping wife, Loretta. She got up in time to see one of the kangaroos hopping away. "Now that I've seen one, I'm wondering if I'm all right," she said.

Lance and his son, Brock, chased them, Instamatic camera in hand, but lost them in the woods. This did find several tracks, however. They were narrow, about six inches long, and V-shaped, with firm impressions of the toe in front and a softer impression in the back. Nero and his son made plaster casts of the tracks, and cryptozoologist Mark Hall (cryptozoology is the study of unknown animals) subsequently traveled from Minneapolis to make his own set of casts. The authorities insisted that the tracks had been made by deer, but they were clearly not deer tracks.

It was at this point that the First National Bank began using kangaroos in its advertising. And that wasn't all. Someone brought a twenty-one-inch-tall wallaby to a Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department meeting and to the Waukesha State Bank, where it posed for pictures.

Then a much more mysterious photo surfaced. Two twenty-three-year-old anonymous Menomonee Falls camera buffs sent the papers a color polaroid of a kangaroolike creature in a wooded area. The photo was allegedly taken at five twenty p.m. on Monday, April 24. Supposedly, the camera buffs were photographing ducks when they encountered the kangaroo. Their picture appeared in newspaper across the country-proof that a kangaroo was hopping around Waukesha County.

On Thursday, April 27, the Wisconsin Agriculture Department put out a press release warning citizens to beware of kangaroos and to keep pets away from them, especially horses, because kangaroos could be carriers of equine infectious anemia. To determine whether a kangaroo was diseased or not, the press release explained, you had to examine the insides of its lower lip. If the kangaroo had a tattoo declaring it free of equine infectious anemia, you were safe. However, according to Agriculture Department Secretary Gary Rhode, "The problem is that the absence of such tattoos can mean either that the kangaroo tested negatively or that it was not tested at all."

Tattooed lips on kangaroos? This development had everyone talking for days. Turns out, it was a story created by Edward Jackonamis, Waukesha's Democratic state assembly speaker, who had issued a bogus press release that tricked both the agriculture department and newspaper around the state.

By this point, the mystery was officially a farce. Jokers and pranksters had won out, and most people had lost interest in the kangaroos.

Until, that is, Sunday, May 21, nearly a month later. That's when an Eau Claire woman driving along Highway 12 between Augusta and Fall Creek saw "a figure the size of a man hopping across the highway five to six cars lengths in front of her. It wasn't too visible, but it was not a deer, it wasn't a dog, and it wasn't a man."

Kangaroo sightings persisted, even after the famous Polaroid that so many had believed in proved to be a fake. Turns out it was a stuffed wallaby taken from a Milwaukee museum, placed in a cornfield, and photographed. Then in June 2000, some other pranksters confessed to having used a plywood kangaroo cutout, to which they had attached handles. Brothers Randy and Rick Latta and their neighbors, brothers Dick and Jack Schmidt, took credit for many of the kangaroo sightings. They said they would hide in bushes until a car approached, and then they would go bouncing across Barker Road.

However, there was no reported sightings along Barker Road, and it is doubtful plywood kangaroos were getting hit by cars, then hopping away.

Season 3 Ramble#6 - Just Jump In! ver.3

This month’s episode is about the jump magazine line published by Shueisha(spell). I've done this twice before, hence v.3 but this time I decided to focus on all their magazine lines except weekly shonen jump, which is their most well known line around the world.

In previous rambles I gave details about the jump magazine line, it's publishing company shueisha, their target demographics and so on, but this is v3 so what I'm gonna do is skip all that and welcome you to check out my just jump in v1 or 2 rambles if you haven't or watch the ultimate guide to every jump magazine by manga crash on YouTube. that's the video's literal title btw. big shouts out to crash for the amount of research he put into that video. lots of great information on the intent of different lines and he shines light lines that have run from anywhere between a day and a decade. great channel and twitter in general and blah blah,, yh,, check out all 3 or none at all it's up to you.

but in any case what we're doing here today. in the present. that's different from all of the above, is focusing on reading everything that's not weekly shonen jump, which as I said is their most popular and definitely most financially successful magazine.

and for what it’s worth, it's also one of, if not their most accessible outside Japan, especially if you only entertain certain quality standards, so that being said I didn't get in that many new reads in this month. literally just 5 so I'm not even gonna really do the format thing I usually do and just jump right in fr.

#5 Shadow Lady (Masakazu Katsura, complete w 24 chapters, V Jump)

The premise here is that a young shy girl turns into a sultry phantom thief at night by putting on magic eye liner.

Picked this up because I really dig zetman and video girl which this guy also did. still wasn't really expecting anything too crazy, would’ve welcomed something crazy, but it wasn't. what it did have going for it was the art though, if you've read any of this guy's other manga you'd know his art is definitely a winner + it's got that old school kinda charm ++ it's one of his older works. that charm also comes out in character dynamics as her main love interest is ofc a police officer that wants to catch her but doesn't know her secret identity. steamy hijinks ensues and there's laughs and everything but it's number 5 on a list of 5 things, 25 chapters. short read. not so sweet but we move.

#4 The bones of an invisible person(Jun Ogino, complete w 22 chapters, Shonen Jump+)

The story here is about a young girl in an abusive household that gains the power of invisibility, how she uses her powers, and the fallout of that.

Pretty melancholy vibe throughout but the kind that's like trying to carry itself through the muck, though it is the muck itself,, I hope that lit up the circuits in your brain I intended,, but if not a manga comparison can be found in pretty much all the works of inio asano or more closely in shuzo oshimi’s manga like happiness or drifting net cafe. you could also make a non manga comparison with media like Melancholia or The Banshees of Inisherin, great films that highlight the less dramatic, more subtle swamps of mundanity and how they can be born from and in turn give birth to the more dramatic aspects of life, both positive and negative. it also eeriely reminded me of a one shot from hiroki Endo’s short story anthology collection but I'm rambling now and I know it …

in any case, melancholy is a vibe and it's always great to see a melancholy ruminating girl in my media. #diversitywin. also always neat to see the more unsavoury side of supernatural powers, and not in the “what if Superman was evil?” kinda way but in the more “these powers are kind of like a burden actually" kinda way… pretty solid art. not that many characters but they tended to carry some nicely smoldering warmth which was a great contrast to the overarching vibe.

22 chapters. short and neat. short and sweet. would recommend.

#3 Neko Majin (Akira Toriyama, complete w 8 chapters, Monthly Shonen Jump)

Firstly. we can never say thank you enough to Akira Toriyama. his parting was an inevitability of his life so we're glad we had him and I'm super thankful for all the work he did and all the love he so clearly did it with.

that being said. there's no real story here. sir Toriyama just drew a silly little dude. specifically a silly little cat. that's been trained by another silly little dude. who goes by the name of Goku, you may have heard of him. definitely a gag manga, no I didn't get any crazy life threatening laughs from it but there's something about Toriyama's art that draws a smile on your face. ..crazy to think his style will come to be called “old school” in a few but that too is life… rest in power Akira Toriyama sensei.

#2 Kono Oto Tomare(Amyuu Sakura, 114 chapters ongoing, Jump Square/SQ)

First off. very important note. for those who don't know, the koto is a traditional Japanese instrument and is actually their national instrument. Personally I knew neither of these things before reading this manga. While reading though I tried intentionally listening to some koto music and it was pretty rad, like aside from the manga I'd recommend checking out some koto music and just traditional Japanese music overall tbh. pretty rad.

In any case, this manga is about a highschool koto club on the brink of being disbanded for not having enough members and the cumulative effort of overcoming that, led by a delinquent freshman.

I've seen it mentioned by quite a few people, a good number of people whose taste's and their analysis even, I have a lot of respect for, but I still wasn't expecting much. now that I've read it and experienced the awesomeness I'm pretty sure a lot of that came from not knowing what a koto was and not really caring. I thought the manga trying to make me care about it would be an uphill battle but the way they paralleled the different club members' development as individual and collective human beings, with their ability to produce unique sounds through the koto, again, both individually and collectively, was pretty phenomenal.

the ultra creative illustrations in art focused manga is pretty much always a winner for me but yet I still somehow I feel like I keep getting sucker punched by it,, especially here with the koto like going into this I had almost zero reference for how they sounded but I don't know what to tell you man they drew the shit out of that sound. ftr the art is pretty great all round. It has a bit of a shoujo feel, even a pinch of BL if your mind wanders down those roads but even at the surface level, the dynamics are pretty well orchestrated with a generally natural feel in any case.

The pacing is great and it looks like it's coming up to its climax,,, or crescendo if you want to force the pun, great time to pick it up and I definitely highly recommend.

side note. if you're wondering what I mean by art focused manga then I'd recommend listening to my rambles all about art and all about art v2.

#1 Cyborg 009(Shoutarou Ishinomori, 114/206 chapters, monthly shonen jump)

From reading this and reading about it I came into the knowledge that the creator of cyborg 009 was actually an assistant on tetsuwan atom, better known as astro boy here in the West. I just wanna take a moment here and say that astro boy is cool and all but this is the real greatest robot on earth.

The setting is the latter half of the twentieth century and sadly war is still a thing and sadder still the entire world seems engaged in it. looking into the camera like I'm on the office ofc. This is all fueled by a terrorist organization known as black ghost, that mainly profits by creating and selling more and more advanced weapons. again. the camera. So the world is so full of war, so full there's almost no room for anymore,, which interferes with profits and we can't have that. not in the good ol free market. so black ghost comes up with the ingenious idea of expanding the frontiers of fighting by creating 9 highly advanced cyborgs who can take the fighting below and above earth, sea, sky and even space. and they would've gotten away with it too but the cyborgs along with a remorseful rogue black ghost scientist, have retained enough of their human hearts to fight against this evil.

To start, because of how old it is, coming out in 1964, I thought I wouldn't be too into the action and have to really dig into the themes and so but it was pretty solid, usually effectively conveying their grand dramaticism if not always so smooth in choreography. great variety, which I really appreciated,. a lot of media say they have these fighters that can go at it anywhere and do anything but for some reason they usually end up just punching it out in some business district or something, but here? these guys were fighting anyone, anywhere, fr… for a cause..

cool dialogue and dynamics. fights trying to end fighting tend to generate that.. it’s always cool to see beacons of humanity shining through a mechanical lens, lots to say and unpack, but one thing I will definitively speak on to say I liked was the inner turmoil of the fighting. again, a lot of media just have folks punching out, granted they do tend to be for some higher purpose like saving the world or a loved one but fighting is still difficult more often times than not. yes physically so but mentally and emotionally, yes someone needs to fight but why does it have to be me, why do I have to fight this way and what does one become through fighting, win or lose? great stuff, especially as I said through that mechanical lens.

Old ass art but it's got charm, sadly the messages are still very potent to this day, really wish it were a case of looking back like man humanity was so foolish then huh?? but in any case really really great read, had always dug the aesthetic from the glimpses of one of the anime adaptations I saw every now and then as a kid, really really glad the actual content matched and even exceed that. highly recommend but grain of salt due to translation hell.
