My favorite red Ajah

Oh my gods I was think about this just now! I can’t believe @sweettacoghosthero found someone else who is in both of those fandoms this is crazy !
So what I was thinking about it with @sweettacoghosthero , was Lyanna's backstory could be that she was from a minor noble family, that got destroyed by a false dragon, which made her sort of hate and fear male chanellors. So when she gets to the Aes Sedai, she gravitates to the reds, but before she can be incited, shit goes down and she is capture by the Black Tower.
There she meet Rhaegar who was also being held captive because she decided to side with Logain and Rand and not Ishamael. At first, she is not very happy with her cellmate, but she understands that for her to get out of there she would have to use his powers too.
(There is a couple in the books in the last one called Pevara Tazanovni and Androl Genhald they appear in a memory of light if I remember correctly, and I was basing Lya's and Rhae's relationship start on them )
So they link to try and get out, but their attempts are not that successful, because they are both not really giving their all. But they get more and more desperate, so accidentally Rhaegar ends up bonding Lyanna thinking he was just holding onto her power, and she ends up bonding him back and that's how they end up bonding each other. And of course, Lya can no longer be in the red Ajah.
But what do you think @asongofstarkandtargaryen ?
So I sent you an ask yesterday so I guess your open to discussing possible aus. I’m new to the wheel of the time fandom but ever since I got in I’ve been thinking about a Rhaelya au. Where she is a blue sister ( aes sedai ) and Rhaegar is a male channelers ( asha’man ). And they ended up bonding each other ?
Can you help me with that one ? What do you think about it ? Opinions ?
Hello!
If I were to choose an Ajah for Lyanna I guess I'd go for the Green one. Green Ajah sisters are known not to merely tolerate but love and respect men and many of them are married or have a romantic relationship with their wardens. Furthermore, this Ajah was once called "the battle Ajah" so I believe that Lyanna's love for swordsmanfighting (knight of the laughing tree) would be appreciated.
I love the idea of Rhaegar being a male channeler. If the au takes place post Rand events -or even perhaps during that time-then Rhaegar could go to the Black Tower to train before he became asha'man. And I can totally see Rhaegar and Lya bonding within that universe.
Also, I want to say that I imagine Rhaegar being part of Cairhien nobility. People there participate on Daes Dae'mar (The Game of the Houses) which is the closer we get to King's Landing game of thrones (and I suspect that Martin was partly influenced by Cairhien when he came up with it).
As for Lyanna, I can see her being from the Borderlands since not only those lands are on the Northern part of Westlands but also they are the closest to the Great Blight. For those people the danger of the Dark One is not a tale they tell to little kids but an actual threat. It's similar to the North only separated by the Wall from Others.

WoT Meta: The Problem of Androl
I think upon reflection my biggest issue with Androl isn't necessarily his resume to rival Barbie's, or the fact that his power set exists JUST so that Sanderson can Think With Portals, or even that he is the MOST cishet protagonist that Sanderson could have chosen to be the Black Tower Pov. Those are all problems, but their not what makes me feel like Androl dosen't belong in WoT.
The biggest problem with Androl, and the reason he doesn't fit with the other characters, is that he's boring.
One of Jordan's hallmarks as a writer, and one of things that makes WoT so compelling is that in very few words, Jordan is capable of painting a picture of person as a fully realized person, with their own history, foibles and agency. It's one of the reasons that the series is packed with mid-tier and minor characters that have huge fan interest. Even one off PoVs generally feel distinct, and more over feel like living breathing characters. It's more then just the 'everyone is hero of their own story' school of writing thought, it's more that everyone, no matter how insignificant they might seem, is important, maybe not to the heroes, or the villains or even destiny, but to themselves, and to the world.
Now obviously this is hard thing to do, and I don't begrudge Sanderson for not succeeding, or for succeeding in only limited ways. (Hinderstap, for as much as it is a DnD module used for filler is a good example of making characters encountered only briefly come alive and feel like their struggles matter). But their is something in particular about the way that Androl is written that feels antithetical to Jordan's character writing.
His vague sprawling backstory is meant to make him mysterious and interesting, but a in reality a hodgepodge of concepts that, any one on their own would be interesting, but when all tied together just...make a mess. Everything that surrounds him is wishy washy and indistinct. We're given glimpses into who Androl is but instead of painting a concise picture they instead show a vicious tangled mess of different ideas.
A man who convinced a Wisdom to take him as an apprentice despite being a man? A+ Asha'man concept, would pay to see him and Nynaeve bounce off each other. A man who always suspected The One Power ran in his family and came to the Black Tower seeking answers on if that is what drove his father to suicide? Yes, give me forty chapters of him. A man whose sense of justice is strong enough that he joined a hopeless rebellion for a land that wasn't his own? Fantastic. A man who spent his whole life starting and then abandoning different crafts due to a deep sense of dissatisfaction, and a yearning for purpose and meaning that was never fulfilled until he found The Black Tower? Amazing.
All of those men being one man? The interconnections never properly being explained or totaled out? That's....to much. And it reveals the hand of the author, reveals that Androl's character isn't so much about exploring ideas or themes, but about being whatever Sanderson needs him to be at that moment. His character comes to feel paint-by-numbers, and as a result, incredibly boring to read about. He is a variable in an equation first, a character second, and fully realized and fleshed out never.
The truly, truly infuriating thing about Androl though, is that he is largely unnecessary, as the ideal Black Tower PoV already existed in the form of Emarin. First appearing in Crossorads of Twilight, Emarin(/Algarin) a Lord of Tear who did not fear the Power, a man whose brother was gentled by the Aes Sedai, but who lived years afterwords thanks to Cadsuane's compassion. A man who upon learning of the Cleaning took up his brothers name, and left behind his family's noble title and power, in order to The Black Tower and live his brother's dream in his stead. That concept, introduced in SINGLE paragraph in CoT is far far more compelling then all the pages of Androl put together. And that's assuming that their is some reason Logain couldn't have just been the Black Tower PoV- which I am not necessarily convinced it the truth. (Yes, the Almost Turned the Shadow thing is kinda important to show the 13x13 trick and to give the Dreadlords narrative weight, as well as to the contextualize Logain's choice to walk away from the sa'angreal at the end, but I feel like that could have still been done with Logain as the main Black Tower PoV over Androl).
As an aside, a part of me, a very petty part that I don't necessarily think is rational, wonders if the reason that Sanderson didn't take up the opportunity offered by Emarin was that, Emarin is the rarest of all WoT creatures: a canonically gay male character. The knowledge that it was Sanderson that cannoized his being gay mitigates that voice, but the knowledge that Jordan's notes contained many characters unstated sexualities keeps it from disappearing whole cloth.
Anyways Androl is boring to read about, and Pevara deserved a lot better.

Yukiri thinking that seaine and pevara (who she suspects of being pillowfriends) stole the oath rod to use it for certain personal reasons has got to be one of the funniest things to come out of the books

Seaine: Okay. We'll figure this out. Pevara, let's go over our options.
Pevara: Options? We have two. We're screwed and we're more screwed.

Well!
“Well,” Pevara said. Then again, more grimly, “Well!” Her face was all composure, but the glitter in her dark eyes was far from the mischief Seaine remembered as novice and Accepted.

God, yes please. I like Androl and Androl & Pevara’s shenanigans a LOT but the way he is parachuted in as a protagonist is really jarring in the context of the entire series, and the whole Logain/Gabrelle thing is...eugh. Let Pevara (or a Red sister representing one or more of the ‘good’ Reds, but Pevara is my favourite) and Logain lead the Black Tower plot instead.
Pevara would be particularly interesting for this because we know she’s a stickler for the law regarding men who can channel and was specifically chosen as a Sitter post-the Vileness because of it. You’d want to use those characters to ask/answer questions about the purpose and future of both the Red Ajah and the Black Tower. Book!Pevara would NOT approve of Logain being gentled the way Liandrin (& Alanna, & Moiraine, etc) did it, and would not hesitate to say so - but Logain could counter that it didn’t make much difference in the end to him, and that’s the start of some interesting conversation. Androl couldn’t really be used for that in the books because he didn’t have much of an opinion on the wider scheme of things; he’d never been hunted by the Red Ajah so it didn’t make a huge difference to him that Pevara was Red. It would to Logain, and therein lies some plot-driving conflict.
If we’re combining characters let’s tackle another obvious one which is getting rid of Androl and just letting Logain do everything he does like he was set up to do in the first place. Androl’s not the only character to experiment with gateways and Logain is so powerful he could do all the fancy stuff anyways. Get rid of Logain’s creepy “have to kiss them to make it work” bonding of the other two Aes Sedai to make Alanna’s actions suitably impactful, and have the only Aes Sedai he bonds Pevara in the same manner as Pevara bonding him. Again, more impactful because it only happens the one time and what an unexpected result from it, plus the extra impact of his journey from being Gentled by the Reds to saving the world with them

So I have a thing about like, the notion that powerful female characters in WoT end up dead, dethroned, or depowered by the end of the series. 'Cause that does happen to a lot of the women in WoT, but a) it happens to a lot of the everyone in WoT and b) there are I think more powerful women than powerful men in the series, and I'm not sure the statistics bear out that this affects them more. Since there are Too Many characters in WoT, we're gonna restrict ourselves for the time being to non-villains with more than 5 perspective sections in the books, and who can channel, hold a noble title or high military rank, or have another extraordinary ability. Needless to say, this will involve substantial spoilers for the series, so like, fair warning. We will be sorting characters first by gender and then by whether they are Dead, Dethroned, or Depowered or Doing Just Fine. Loss of Ta'veren status will not, for these purposes, constitute depowering.
Women
Dead, Dethroned, or Depowered
Moiraine Damodred
Siuan Sanche
Egwene al'Vere
Verin Mathwin
Morgase Trakand
Doing Just Fine
Nynaeve al'Meara
Min Farshaw
Elayne Trakand
Faile Bashere
Aviendha
Cadsuane Melaidhrin
Fortuona Paendrag
Pevara Tazanovni
Men
Dead, Dethroned, or Depowered
Rand al'Thor
Geoffram Bornhald
Pedron Niall
Gareth Bryne
Gawyn Trakand
Galad Damodred (debatable)
Doing Just Fine
Lan Mandragoran
Perrin Aybara
Thom Merillin
Mat Cauthon (technically died twice, but he's fine now)
Rodel Ituralde
Androl Genhald
Talmanes
Logain Ablar (debatable)
Four women who seem like they ought to be on this list because of how much they're around, but actually have fewer than 5 perspectives. Mercifully, they balance out
Leane Sharif (DDD)
Birgitte Silverbow (DDD)
Berelain sur Paendrag Paeron (DJF)
Sorilea (DJF)
So, 13 women (not counting the honorable mentions), 5 DDD, 8 DJF. That's 38.46%. 14 men, 6 DDD, 8 DJF, or 42.86%. The difference is less drastic than I expected, but I feel pretty comfortable saying that this does not constitute a trend towards killing and depowering the women of WoT. Logain is debatable because he spends much of the series "brought low" in the kind of way people talk about happening to the female characters, but he ended up on the DJF list because he's fine at the end. Galad is debatable because while he lost his hand and his good looks, he's still got his rank. I put him on the DDD list because if it had happened to Berelain instead, there's no question which list she would be on..

Sitters in the Hall of the Tower
I was looking up various Sitters in the Companion, wondering how many of the Sitters during New Spring were still around 20 years later.
This is a list sorted by Ajah, with the year(s) they became a Sitter, whether they went to Salidar or stayed in the Tower (ie. were a rebel or a loyalist) and any other relevant info.
^ Sitter when Moiraine and Siuan were raised in 978 NE % Sitter when Siuan was raised to the Amyrlin Seat in 988 NE # One of the eleven who stood to depose Siuan + Sitter after the Tower was reunited
Blue
Anlee - ?; “Sitter for the Blue at the time of the Aiel War” ^ * Eadyth - ?; “Sitter for the Blue [...] when Moiraine and Siuan were raised” ^ * Lelaine Akashi - 962, went to Salidar ^ % +
Lyrelle Arienwin - 995, went to Salidar; went to the Black Tower in 1000 Moria Karentanis - 999, in Salidar; Black Ajah, “stilled and beheaded” in TGS
* Anlee and Eadyth both appear in New Spring. No confirmation if either were still around when Siuan became Amyrlin. Also, a Blue Sitter was “killed in the fighting when Siuan was deposed” (WOT Companion). This could have been one of them.
Brown
Saerin Asnobar - 960, stayed in Tower ^ % # +
Janya Frende - 993, went to Salidar + Takima Deraighdin - 991, went to Salidar +
Escaralde Hamday - 999, in Salidar
Juilaine Madome - 999, in Tower Shevan Gadarin - 999-1000, in Tower
Gray
Jarna Malari - ?, Sitter during NS; Black Ajah, killed by Ishamael in 983  ^
Yukiri Haruna - ?, stood to depose Siuan, stayed in Tower * # +
Varilin Zanaire - 992, went to Salidar + Evanellein Lorn - 997, stayed in Tower; Black Ajah, killed in TOM #
Delana Mosalaine - 999, in Salidar; Black Ajah; fled in KOD, killed in TOM Kwamesa Taramasu - 999, in Salidar
Andaya Forae - 999, in Tower +
Naorisa Cambral - 1000, in Salidar, chosen to replace Delana
* Yukiri was  raised to the shawl in 867 and would have been an Aes Sedai for 111 years in 978, so she could have been a Sitter then. It’s likely she was one in 988.
Green
Faiselle Darone - 981, went to Salidar % + Rubinde - 992, stayed in Tower # + Talene Minly - 994, stayed in Tower; Black Ajah, fled in KOD #
Joline Maza - 999, in Tower; set penance by Elaida, and then “unchaired”
Samalin Naerodan - 999, in Salidar Malind Nachenin - 999, in Salidar
Farnah - 1000, in Tower, chosen to replace Talene +
Red
Duhara Basaheen - 929-953; Keeper 979-984; 999, in Tower to replace Teslyn; sent to Caemlyn to advise Elayne in 1000; Black Ajah, killed in AMOL
Lirene Doirellin - 953, resigned / exiled in 985 ^ Toveine Gazal - 952,  resigned / exiled in 985 ^ Tsutama Rath - 964, resigned / exiled in 985 ^
Amira Moselle -  became Mistress of Novices during NS and a Sitter later (985?); stepped down when Elaida returned to the Tower in 998 * Javindhra Doraille - 985; went to Black Tower in KOD % # Pevara Tazanovni - 985; went to the Black Tower in KOD % # Teslyn Baradon - 985, stayed in Tower; forced to resign in 999 % **
Elaida a'Roihan - 998; became Amyrlin in 999 *
Barasine - 1000, to replace Duhara + Raechin Connoral - 10000, to replace Pevara or Javindhra + Viria Connoral - 10000, to replace Pevara or Javindhra +
* Too many Sitters! If Javindhra, Pevara and Teslyn all became Sitters in 985, how could Amira step aside for Elaida? Either that didn’t happen - it seems to be mentioned only in Amira’s entry in the Companion and in a Q&A, not Elaida’s entry nor in any of the novels - or else Javindhra only became a Sitter when she replaced Elaida.
** The Companion doesn’t say Teslyn stood to depose Siuan but surely she did, because she’s Red and there’s no one else who could have. EDIT for clarification: All the other Sitters are accounted for as having stood or not having been present. There’s also a line in ACOS about how Teslyn “supported [Elaida’s] rise”.
White
Velina Behar - 974, stayed in Tower; Black Ajah, fled in TGS ^ % #
Ferane Neheran - 981-992; 999, in Tower % + Seaine Herimon - 986, stayed in Tower % + Saroiya - 987, went to Salidar % +
Aledrin Malenry - 999, in Salidar; went to Black Tower in 1000 Berana Shamon - 999, in Salidar; stepped down when Tower reunited
Yellow
Sedore Dajenna - 961, stayed in Tower; Black Ajah, fled in TGS ^ % #
Romanda Cassin - 885-973; 999, in Salidar + Suana Dragand - 919-952; 999, in Tower
Doesine Alwain - 981, stayed in Tower # % + Magla Daronos - 985, went to Salidar % +
Salita Toranes - 999, in Salidar; resigned when Tower reunited

Quote
The old man stopped ahead of them with an annoyed expression. What would he do if they refused? Pevara was tempted to create a gateway for them to flee. We follow, Androl thought, striding forward. We’re never going to find Taim in this unless we talk to someone. Pevara frowned as he walked after the man, the other Asha’man joining him. She hurriedly caught up. I thought we had decided I was in charge, she thought to him. No, he replied, I thought that we’d decided you would act like you were in charge. She sent back a calculated mix of cold displeasure and an implication that the conversation was not yet finished. Androl sent back amusement. Did you. . . just glare at me mentally? That’s impressive.

Did Pevara successfully lie?
I'm a good bit past this part in the book now, but this has been needling at my brain - Randlanders of Tumblr, help!
During the planning phase of rescuing Logain - when they found out that Logain was being held (for certain), really - and Androl and Pevara had taken down some Asha'man and were waiting for Emarin.
Pevara had the one that was conscious trussed up in air, unable to see or hear, right? When Emarin comes in, he asks her to loosen the weave so that the captive will overhear what is being said. The first thing Emarin says to Pevara after she does that is, "He can't hear us, right?"
Pevara says no.
She knows he CAN hear them, because she just loosened the weave to allow it, but somehow she was able to say no - despite the 3 oaths?
Help me out, Tumblr. I don't care about spoilers, they don't change my enjoyment of a story, so tell me what is going on here. Was this an editorial slip, an error on Sanderson's part, or did Pevara actually lie (indicating that something is up with her being bound to speak no word that is not true)?
