3. What were your top five books of the year?

#1 bury your gays by chuck tingle (his adult horror writing is STELLAR)

#2 the secret life of albert entwistle by matt cain (a cozier gay romance about an elderly retired postman trying to find the man he fell in love with when he was younger; the whole vibe of the book is really sweet)

#3 swordcrossed by freya marske (lower stakes than her first series but all the characters are really endearing and yeah there are duels so that slays)

#4 the seven husbands of evelyn hugo by taylor jenkins reid (finally read this after it sitting on my shelf for like a year and yeah the plot twist GOT ME)

#5 the gentleman's guide to vice and virtue by makenzi lee (finally read it on the rec of @fucking-petticoated-swashbuckler ; gay romance, adventures, and lots of chases lol)

4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?

costanza casati! i read her book clytemnestra and loved the style. it's hard to find a good retelling but i thought this one was fantastic! she does a great job of delving deep into the character's head.

not this time! i love getting book recommendations and all the ones i got this year were really solid!

Hatpins!

Because there have been all sorts of comments on that hat pin defense post (petticoated swashbucklers unite!), your Auntie Jilli is going to give you a quick DIY hatpin tutorial. Sorry there aren’t any photos on the Tumblr post, but I’ll eventually write a full Gothic Charm School tutorial with them. 

Supplies:

7″ long doll making needles

Epoxy putty. (I use the JB Weld SteelStik, because I hate dealing with liquid epoxy.)

Buttons/pins, 2 for every hat pin. (The small, round pinback buttons that most people put on their jackets or messenger bags.)

Needle-nose pliers

SAFETY TIP: work in a well-ventilated room. Working in a non-ventilated room with epoxy is Not A Good Idea. You also might want to wear gloves. You don’t have to, but it’s probably better than scrubbing epoxy putty residue off your fingers.

Instructions:

Use the needle-nose pliers to remove the wire pins from the back of both buttons. Pull/twist the straight part of the pin until the curved portion that’s under the lip of the pin pops out. 

Pinch off a slightly-larger-than-pea sized chunk of epoxy putty, and smush or mix it together. Put that in the back of one of the buttons, where the pinback was.

Place the top of the doll making needle (the part with the eye the thread would go through) on top of the epoxy putty in the back of the button. Do not have the top of the needle extend past the edge of the button.

Get another small chunk of epoxy putty, and put that on top of the needle.

Take your second button, and put it on top of the new chunk of epoxy putty. Press all of this together. Yes, you are making a button/putty/needle/putty/button sandwich.

Wipe off any epoxy putty from around the edges of the buttons.

Let the whole thing dry/cure for 24 hours.

Ta-da! Hatpin! Use it to secure your hat! Use it to fend off creepers!
