Tenerife 2 Ch D R1: Patrik Rikl/Petr Nouza def. Ryan Seggerman/Patrik Trhac 7-6(6), 1-6, [10-7] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
Bar the second set, where R. Seggerman/P. Trhac controlled due to the slightly faster rhythm, P. Rikl/P. Nouza successfully nailed the pressing points by putting the former pair off balance. This way, even though they were unable to convert 3 break points, they could maximize their chances in the tie-breakers, while R. Seggerman/P. Trhac tried to gradually ramp up the pace in the second set, which contributed to not only the 25% break point conversion rate, but also made their 8 chances to break, their pace still got absorbed toward the end of the match.
On the other hand, it turned out that both pairs had their own service game strengths. In this regard, even though R. Seggerman/P. Trhac scored 6 aces than P. Rikl/P. Nouza's 5, which also contributed to their exceptional first serve winning percentage at 82%, 13% more than the Czech pair. In contrast, P. Rikl/P. Nouza had a slightly better second serve percentage by 10%, mainly due to R. Seggerman/P. Trhac's percentage fading as a consequence of their 5 double faults.
In the quarterfinals, P. Rikl/P. Nouza will face Franco Agamenone/Francesco Maestrelli, who defeated Alexandru Jecan/Markos Kalovelonis 3-6, 7-6(9), [10-2] in another topsy-turvy encounter. Taking into account both are active, frequent singles players, this could be an interesting test on how their doubles game mesh with a combination of a balance between a working return and a functional serve, as well as their pacing. Everything counts!

The otherwise then also happened in the match tie-break, where P. Rikl/P. Nouza turned out to be in control more instead. Right in the second point, the Czech pair caused R. Seggerman/P. Trhac to be more overwhelmed from the baseline, which resulted in the latter's failed smash to secure their earlier mini-break to 2-0. Two points later, they even doubled the break lead due to the American pair's forehand error to 5-1.
Even though R. Seggerman/P. Trhac tried their best to minimize the gap, P. Rikl/P. Nouza was clutch enough to close the match as an unreturned serve allowed them to take the match tie-breaker 10-7 despite saving one of the match points earlier. As a result, the Czech pair won the match and secured their spot in the quarterfinals.

The second set became a different story for R. Seggerman/P. Trhac, who turned out to control the flow since the start. Right in the third game, a forehand winner from the American pair succeeded a previous exchange to set themselves 2 points ahead, where they eventually broke to 3-1, followed by a consolidation to 4-1.
However, P. Rikl/P. Nouza started to be out-paced toward the end of the match, where a net exchange caused them to be down a double break to 5-1, which allowed R. Seggerman/P. Trhac to serve for the second set. Despite having to concede just one point in that game, R. Seggerman/P. Trhac served the second set breadstick to 6-1, thus bringing the match to the distance with a match tie-break to decide the winner.

The doubles action in the Tenerife 2 Challenger continued with an early blockbuster between the Nottingham Challenger champion, Patrik Rikl/Petr Nouza, and a rising pair in Ryan Seggerman/Patrik Trhac, in the first round. This clash turned out to deliver due to the thin margin between them, where some or most moments depended on their setup or how they handle the pressure points in between.
In the first set alone, both pairs survived several deciding points before the first set ended up being settled in a tie-breaker. Right in the first game, R. Seggerman/P. Trhac came up with a successful volley to conclude a net exchange to create their break point, only for P. Rikl/P. Nouza to hold their service game 1-0 2 points later. It also was the case in the ninth game, in another instance, where a working lob from P. Rikl/P. Nouza succeeded R. Seggerman/P. Trhac’s failed lob earlier before the Czech pair held their serves to 5-4. They almost broke for the first set when they were up 2 points earlier, but the American pair still held their serves to 5-5.
The tie-breaker then became inevitable, with their ability to keep their moment being tested. While in another net exchange, a backhand down-the-line error from P. Rikl/P. Nouza caused R. Seggerman/P. Trhac to have a mini-break lead to 3-2 before they consolidated it to 4-2, but the latter missed their forehand error for the match to be level again. Somehow, the Czech pair had an unreturned serve to secure their latest set point before R. Seggerman/P. Trhac double-faulted, which handed the competitive first set to the former pair 7-6(6).

Nottingham (IH) Ch D F: Patrik Rikl/Petr Nouza def. Joshua Paris/Antoine Escoffier 6-3, 7-6(3) Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
J. Paris/Escoffier tried their best to elevate their game in the second set, but they could not sustain their moment once P. Rikl/P. Nouza's smashes kicked in. The upper balls might not be the major problem; however, it was the Czech's anticipative return game from the start of the match that contributed to their exceptional play back in the first set. This way, they could move forward more efficiently and volley their way to the crucial points despite Escoffier/J. Paris' best efforts to match their pace. Therefore, the Czech pair had 5 break points and successfully converted 60% of them than Escoffier/J. Paris' 33% from 3.
Service game-wise, there was a little difference between both pairs in their first serves, but not on their second. In this regard, despite P. Rikl/P. Nouza scoring 9 aces to Escoffier/J. Paris' 6, the Czech pair was more effective on their second serve, taking into account their 2 double faults than Escoffier/J. Paris' 3 allowed them to win 66% of their points from their second serves.
This marked P. Rikl/P. Nouza's first Challenger-level title as a pair, while it was P. Rikl's second and P. Nouza's seventh Challenger doubles title. They could be one of the forces to be reckoned with, reflecting the depth of the Czech tennis in general. Furthermore, for Escoffier/J. Paris, while Cherbourg Challenger will be their next destination, this could be one of many as a pair, considering this is their first week together.

The second set became its own rollercoaster since J. Paris/Escoffier tried to step up their return game. Here, it took three consecutive games before they got an actual chance, even though it came from P. Rikl’s double fault that foiled his and P. Nouza’s own game point. A shanked forehand lob return from Escoffier, which turned out to be in the line, converted the break point (on the deciding point) for him and J. Paris to break 3-1, swiftly consolidating the lead to 4-1 right after. Two games later, after the Czech pair held their serves to 4-2, their smashes not only foiled Escoffier/J. Paris’ game point, but also converted it to break back 4-3 before levelling the play 4-4, signifying the regained pace considering how fast the points were constructed in this match.
Four straight holds later, the tie-breaker became inevitable, but it was not an ideal start for Escoffier/J. Paris due to J. Paris’ double fault, thus setting P. Rikl/P. Nouza on a mini-break lead (1-0). The latter then consolidated their lead on serve (2-0) and had not looked back since, widening the gap after J. Paris’ failed volley somewhere. P. Rikl/P. Nouza then had a match point (6-3), where they served it out to convert it, taking the second set 7-6(3) to win their first Challenger doubles title as a pair.

Contesting their first Challenger final as a pair was Antoine Escoffier/Joshua Paris (third Challenger doubles finals for both of them, respectively), who stunned Ryan Peniston/Billy Harris 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals, and Czech pair Patrik Rikl/Petr Nouza, who also paired for the first time and went on defeating second seeds Luke Johnson/Ben Jones 6-7(5), 6-3, [10-8] earlier in that round. This opened a possibility for a competitive final, where their return games determined most of the flow.
The second serves became a problem for J. Paris/Escoffier, as the follow-ups made them trail several points before finally holding the sixth game. However, the problem mostly appeared in the seventh game, where P. Rikl’s working volley got Escoffier run over to create their break point. Eventually, the Czech pair broke to 5-3 to earn the opportunity to serve for the first set. Despite stiff opposition from the French-British pair, P. Rikl/P. Nouza’s unreturned serve converted the set point to 6-3, putting them, technically, one set away from the title.

Danderyd Ch D QF: Patrik Niklas-Salminen/Petr Nouza [3] def. Daniel Cukierman/Joshua Paris 7-5, 6-4 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream
Cukierman/J. Paris had their moments when they were up a break in both sets, but several costly errors stemming from their second serves resulted in P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza eventually absorbing their pace from the baseline, with a working forehand getting Cukierman/J. Paris also run over from the baseline. As a result, despite both pairs having 8 opportunities to break in a highly competitive match, P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza converted 50% of them, 10% more than Cukierman/J. Paris, who theoretically, could have turned this around again toward the end of the second set. Alas, it was what it was, and still a great season together in general with a lot of Challenger quarterfinal/deeper runs, including one whole title.
In contrast, service game-wise, it turned out that P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza had a more solid service game. Scoring one more ace than Cukierman/J. Paris, they stood out from their first serves with a 74% winning percentage, 11% more than the latter, which carried them through the pressing times. The concerns surrounding the riskiness of Cukierman/J. Paris’ second serves, especially under pressure, was confirmed, since they double-faulted 5 more times than P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza, fading their second serve winning percentage 16% below P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza as a result.
In the semifinals, P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza will face first seeds Julian Cash/Bart Stevens, who defeated N. Sriram Balaji/Andre Begemann 6-1, 7-6(5) (match report coming soon). While the start of the match seemed like a demolition, the semifinal match could possibly be competitive with their balance at stake, regardless it started from the net or the baseline, while maintaining their momentum could also be another key as proven by this quarterfinal match. Should be a tough but exciting one!

The second set felt like a movie seen before from the first set. To start, J. Paris’ working volley allowed he and Cukierman to be one point ahead before Cukierman’s forehand return ace secured their break to 3-1, but they had to face 2 break points out of an erroneous service game before Cukierman’s volley, followed by him slipping a little at the net, secured the deciding point. However, the break-back was inevitable once J. Paris double-faulted, hence P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza regained their serve and leveled the play to 3-3, absorbing the pace once again.
Subsequently, the second serves once again became another problem for Cukierman/J. Paris, with the baseline game becoming another thing. The forehands became a key from P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza as a forehand return got J. Paris’ volleys off-guard once again, resulting in the break point creation before a double fault eventually converted it to 4-3. The third seeds followed it up by consolidating their lead to 5-3, and the latter still held their service game to 5-4 after saving a match point from their serves. Cukierman/J. Paris had their chances from their volley right after a double fault, but it was insufficient since P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza saved them with a working serve+1 and an ace. Eventually, they served it out to take the second set 6-4, successfully securing the semifinal spot after a competitive showing.

📸 ATP Challenger Livestream
The action in Danderyd Challenger kicked off with a doubles match between third seeds Patrik Niklas-Salminen/Petr Nouza, who received a bye to the quarterfinals since there were only 13 participants, and Daniel Cukierman/Joshua Paris, who yesterday defeated Radoslav Shandarov/Vasil Shandarov 6-2, 6-1 in a dominant fashion in the first round. While both pairs looked competitive, it took a while for P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza to settle their moment in, where the momentum kept swinging back and forth as the match progressed.
Initially, Cukierman/J. Paris controlled the flow while capitalizing on P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza’s previous errors. A working volley from J. Paris converted their break point right after the latter pair’s error spree (including a forehand error) to 3-1 before they consolidated their position to 4-1. They tried to keep controlling the flow from the net, where even J. Paris’ volley forced a deciding point (for their set point, simultaneously), which was saved thanks to P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza’s working service game (5-3) several games later. Consequently, Cukierman/J. Paris had to serve for the set, where the third seeds turned out to have another idea: after J. Paris’ double fault set the break point for P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza, the latter’s swift forehand return, which caught Cukierman’s forehand side off-guard, caused the former to break back at 5-4.
P. Niklas-Salminen/P. Nouza then slowly absorbed the pace, holding their service game to 5-5 as a start. They carried on with their returns and pressed Cukierman/J. Paris from the baseline instead, where their swift forehand return took advantage on Cukierman’s double fault (for the foiling of their own game point) to break 6-5. As a result, P. Niklas Salminen/P. Nouza had the opportunity to serve for the first set, where they sealed it to 7-5 with an unreturned serve to take the set, as well as affirming their momentum after it shifted in the middle of the set.
