Tsar

Tsar (also czar) is a Slavic term derived from the Latin caesar. Ivan III (Ivan the Great) (r. 1462-1505) was the first Russian ruler to begin using the title of tsar during his reign instead of the title Grand Prince of Moscow. His grandson, Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible) (r. 1547-1584), was the first Russian ruler formally crowned as tsar.

The Grand Embassy of Peter the Great

The Grand Embassy was the name given to the long Western European tour that Tsar Peter I of Russia (aka Peter the Great, r. 1682-1725) undertook during 1697-1698. Peter was joined by hundreds of people, including noblemen, his friends, volunteers, interpreters, and cooks.

5th September 1698, On this day Russian Tsar Peter the Great imposes a tax on beards, with the aim of forcing Russian society to adopt more European customs. The tsar’s police force actively seek out bearded men, who refuse to pay the tax, forcibly and publically shaving them. Resistance to the tax was widespread and unpopular, with the use of ‘beard tokens’ being enforced for showing authorities that the tax had been paid. The tax lasted until the 6th April 1722, when it was repealed. This man is Patrick Gordon of Auchleuchries. He grew up near the small town of Ellon in Aberdeenshire, but during the course of his military career went on to twice save Peter the Great from the murderous intrigues of his half-sister Sofia, and was buried in one of the most magnificent funerals Moscow had ever seen. It was said the Tsar himself closed his eyes and left his deathbed in tears. Great Northern War

The Great Northern War took place from 1700 to 1721 and was fought between Russia and Sweden during the reign of Peter I of Russia (Peter the Great). One of the key causes of the war was Peter the Great’s desire to have territory on the Baltic Sea and to gain access to the Black Sea.
