They brought Boo Berry's old design back!
Tumblr media
As a diehard fan of Peter Lorre, I really appreciate Boo Berry for being an original Peter Lorre parody that spoofs a character he actually played, instead of the Looney Tunes cliche or the Igor crap. And for emphasizing his cuteness, instead of making him grotesque.
The modern Casper-like redesign didn't thrill me, and I'm extremely happy to see Boo back to his adorable marshmallow self.

Thank you @selfshipslimecave for this perfect gif!

Hello dear.. Please don't skip my message My name is Mohammed, from the afflicted and destroyed Gaza Strip, where life has become impossible and tragic, and where we see death and pain every moment and every day. Our children suffer from hunger, pain, deprivation and lack of medicine. The war deprived them of playing, school, and their most basic rights. They are now suffering from woes and tragedies. 😭😭 During the war, my wife gave birth to a child and I could not find any milk for him Our conditions are tragic, and we live in a shelter that lacks the minimum requirements for life and is plagued by diseases and epidemics Please help me save my children from the hell of the Gaza Strip and provide them with a decent life 😔 Your assistance, no matter how simple, is enough to ease the burden on us and help us overcome our crisis. Please sympathize with me and donate to me or contribute to sharing the campaign and spreading it widely
I'm so sorry I took so long to answer.

Minors DNI please.
I am old. I am ancient. I have not watched a new season of SpongeBob in Goddess knows how long. But I just scream laughed at a character that is a CLEAR caricature of Peter Lorre in fuckin' 2024. Oh. My. God. Whoever came up with this character, give them a bonus. This made me do the 'tism happy flappy thing. Like, this means a new generation is potentially going to be introduced to Peter.
AND JUST THE CHARACTER TO BEGIN WITH. HE'S SO SILLY. The fact that he doesn't appear to be a one off character either. He's permanent!
It makes me think of that line in 'Addicted to bad ideas,' the album based on Peter's life. "I wasn't always a monster, I was a saint, now forgotten...."
Nope. He wasn't forgotten. Had I realized there was a community of Peter Lorre fans here, when I was thirteen, I probably would have joined. It just makes me happy that there are people who get it. Because there wasn't in middle school, aside from a teacher who I bonded with.
Whoever created this character is definitely a fan of Peter too. Considering the character's last name of Laszlo. Laszlo was Peter's birth name. Someone definitely knows their stuff.
I gotta watch more of this goofball, oh my God.

Saw the Peter Lorre and Vincent Price post going around and wondered if anyone saw the Scooby-Doo! and the Curse of the 13th Ghost movie where they are reunited. Mortifer is mostly a voice impression of Lorre and not as obvious as the Vincent van Ghoul parody. Still nice to see them together.

So I had this idea a while back for a sort of Scooby Doo parody/homage thing where our group of intrepid freelance mystery-solvers were a bunch of gothy witches who often took down the spooky bad guys by scaring them back, and while I still liked that idea, I felt like it could've used more work. An idea recently came for me to change up the usual dynamic of the gang; instead of being some humans and their non-human pet/mascot, they would instead all be anthro animals. So I cut their pet mascot and furry-fied the humans.
The first of the gang is Karl Frankenkong (she/they/he), a monkey who's been rendered a patchwork zombie after multiple disastrous experiments. They're an occult expert and amateur mad scientist.
Then there's Bella Vampirez-Komori (she/her), a literal vampire bat with a love of fashion and music. She's the best at trickery, espionage, and pragmatism.
Finally there's Lazlo Katz (he/him), a ghostly cat who loves old horror and noir movies and is eccentric even by this clique's standards. Despite arguably being the creepiest, he is also the most easily frightened.
Together they are the Mystery Monster Menagerie.
Their adventures would be like Scooby Doo, but with more horror infused (especially taking cues from old gothic horror, cheesy b-movies and classic slashers) and even a bit of noir-style detective flavor.

Hello Peter Lorre fandom, I come bearing gifts in the form of ocs!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Harold Kaminsky, the ghost of a bootlegger who was trapped in a bottle of moonshine for 90 years. He gets freed by Penny, the main character of the comic that I wanna make at some point! He’s a bit on the unhinged side, but genuinely means well. And he also gets a gnc fashion sense once he experiences modern times lol

So there was a peter lorre adjacent character in Spongebob before Slappy. Charlie the first mate ghost pirate from the episode Ghoul Fools back in season 8. It's not listed on the wiki but his voice is very obviously supposed to be a Peter Lorre impression. There really isn't much too him aside from helping lord poltergeist steal the flying Dutchman's ship and reporting that the engine is on fire.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do like his one eyed design. As a character he didn't really catch on. He had a small nonspeaking appearance in Seance Schmeance but that's about it.
Tumblr media
Anyways I do like the idea of ghost pirates. I kinda want to redesign Charlie to look more like Peter Lorre and promote him to captain (why do Peter parodies always end up being sniveling little minions? Not like I don't enjoy that but I want HIM to be the main terror for once!!)
Maybe he ended up booting lord poltergeist and ended up taking over the ship! Now they roam the seven seas looting any nearby ships and doing pirate stuff. And make this little Peter alorre ghost pirate a little more charming. For fun of course <3

I want to gush about what a great Peter Lorre parody Boo Berry is.
Out of all things, a cereal mascot for little kids is the place you'd most expect a Peter Lorre parody to be half-assed. Another off-the-shelf Igor cliche, and/or the ugly Looney Tunes caricature. And you'd assume they'd make him grotesque like usual.
But instead, they based him on an actual character Peter played. (Toady, the black-market diamond salesman from "Rope of Sand").
Tumblr media
Instead of watching the regurgitated cliches on other cartoons, someone watched a real Peter Lorre movie, and assigned him a creature based on his fluid, ethereal mannerisms. They took notice of how fracking adorable he was, and made his parody a blob of cuteness. Boo's voice sounds like low and fluid, like Peter's did. (It only got raspy when he got agitated or crazy.)
There are plenty of Peter Lorre parodies that are well done in various ways. But Boo is the one that best captures Lorre's aura of otherworldly cuteness.
Tumblr media
Extra points for giving him a cat.

I have crossed oceans of high-frucose corn syrup to find out what Peter Lorre tastes like.
Tumblr media
And the answer is....like lighter, foamier Lucky Charms drenched in sugar, with a feint hint of artificial blueberry flavor.
I'd have bought a smaller box to try it, but it only comes in one size.
Tumblr media
Funny enough, I just happened to have a ghostly blue bowl right on hand! But be aware that this picture is misleading; the marshmallows are few and far between. I had to pick some more out of the box and add them to the bowl.
Tumblr media
Crunched up, the cereal makes a passable topping for ice cream. But still a bit too foamy and sugary for me. And yes, that's Blue Moon ice cream under those Boo-Berry crumbs.
Long story short, I'm starting to understand why the other monsters react so negatively to Boo peddling this crap to them. Although I doubt their cereal is any better.
I will definitely save that box though. I'm working on a YouTube series where I'll be reviewing noir movies, and this box will make a great background piece for the Peter Lorre movie reviews! (Except "M.")

So, after some waiting, my beloved sent his package to me. There were more surprises in there than I was prepared for, so I got a little teary eyed. I'm showing off some roses he crocheted for me, one of the many necklaces I was gifted... And a shirt he designed, because he knows how big of a Peter Lorre fan I am, and I've never been able to find a shirt with him on it. He took a Vincent Price quote, a picture, and worked his magic.

Absolutely. Peter, as usual, provides some of the most understated comedy of the film, just by looking vaguely pissed-off at all times. That's all I care about.
Aw, too bad "Clown" isn't going to be screened for real. I figured I wouldn't have a chance to see it in full, but maybe I can pretend to be a film scholar and sneak into the archive. :P
I have read the scripts floating around online, however. I think I first read it ages ago in college, when it was hosted on some forgotten film website. I was... not even offended, just kind of baffled by it, really. The idea COULD have been good, but I think I understand the crux of why it failed: the story as written would never, ever happen. Yes, a washed-up embittered clown absolutely would get rounded up for criticizing Hitler. Yes, there were also children imprisoned in the camps. Maybe, just maybe the clown might have attempted to briefly distract the children from the horrors around them. However. The camp officers would never order a prisoner to calmly lead said children into the gas chambers for the simple reason that THEY WERE ONLY TOO WILLING TO DO IT THEMSELVES BY FORCE. It is ludicrous to think that they would waste time messing with one prisoner's psyche in particular just so that he could choose his own *tragic ending* (which they would have happily supplied him anyway, probably within ten minutes of arriving at the camp).
And one more thing. I have seen leaked clips of certain scenes online, and it's clear that the camp itself was portrayed more like a POW camp along the lines of Stalag 17 (pretty lousy conditions) and not a concentration camp (unimaginably worse). Like, I don't get it. It's as if everyone shied away from making a film that might face these horrors in an honest and unflinching way, which I thought is what he wanted. It all kind of devolves into a twee, very phony ending, and perhaps Lewis finally realized that a little too late.
I just have to end with the relevant quote from the article by Harry Shearer, which remains comedy gold:
Harry Shearer famously said that the rough cut of the film that he saw was worse than he could have imagined. “Seeing this film was really awe-inspiring, in that you are rarely in the presence of a perfect object,” Shearer said. “This was a perfect object. This movie is so drastically wrong, its pathos and its comedy are so wildly misplaced, that you could not, in your fantasy of what it might be like, improve on what it really is.”
Oh, I like your juxtaposition!
My brain is staring at "Lewis's serious dramatic debut" and just can't get past the words into picturing how it might be.
Also, what the hell, Library of Congress, go out and get Die verschwundene Frau or dig up Schuß im Morgengrauen (which has to be somewhere, I know it does) - arrgh!
I see they're not screening that film anymore, because of Reasons.
And anyway, yes - Peter as Morgan Heywood in drag, with that absolutely beautiful contemptuous, bodes-no-good-for-anyone-in-his-path expression, is all I need of "The Patsy."
