note: includes spoilers
heads up that the characters i am most fixated on in the toby series are the luidaeg, elizabeth ryan, and captain pete, with significant focus on aldridge and diva ryan too. many toby characters and relationship dynamics show up on this blog, but this is a disproportionately undersea-centric (and selkie/roane-centric) space! 😄

So about that wedding guest list
At some point, we will actually get to Toby and Tybalt’s wedding. In Toronto. At Quentin’s parents’ knowe.
How exactly do they intend to keep Quentin’s blind fosterage a secret at this point? The conclave was one thing - at the wedding, people will recognize Quentin.
Potential guests who know who Quentin is
May and Jazz
Raj
Karen
The Luidaeg
Dean
Simon
Sylvester and Luna
Walther (may not have been explicitly told, but he’s smart and has talked to the High King and Queen)
Arden (and Madden?)
Potential guests who don’t know who Quentin is
Etienne, Bridget and Chelsea
The rest of the Browns
Kerry
Dianda, Patrick and Peter (assuming Dean didn’t tell them)
Nolan
Marcia and the rest of Goldengreen
January, Li Qin, April, Elliot and the rest of Tamed Lightning
Pete
Acacia
Gilly
August, I forgot about August
Others from Shadowed Hills?
The Roane from Roan Rathad?
-
That’s a lot of people! What about anyone sneaking in to figure out what the fuss is all about? Surely some of the local nobles want to know if the Crown Prince shows up again.
How are they get there? Can Aethlin and Maida set up a Tuatha express from the Mists to their knowe?
Of those titled and with land, probably not everyone will come. Arden might stay behind but send Nolan, or Nolan and Madden can stay behind. The Lordens hopefully will send everyone, especially with Torin out of the way. Raj can get away for a couple days with Ginerva as regent. Luna’s not going to come but I hope Sylvester does, and Luna can hold Shadowed Hills even if both Sylvester and Etienne are away for a couple days. At least, I hope Sylvester goes. Toby will want him there and I would love to see Simon and Sylvester actively avoiding each other. It would be hilarious.
But seriously, how are they hiding this?

St Peter's Church, Letwell
St Peter’s Church, Letwell
It’s quite a nice walk from Dinnington to St Peter’s Church Letwell. Go down Leys Lane from the top of Lorden’s Hill. Look for the footpath to the right. Then follow the footpath into Letwell and you will find the church. If anybody from the church sees this, you are welcome to a copy of the original pictures.

Top 5 Questions every CEO wrestles with
Rough notes:
Dave Kellog, CEO of Host Analytics
10 yes e perience working for CEOs as cmo
10 years experience being an CEO
10 years experience working with CEOs as a Director
5 questions:
When do I next raise money? ... Glib answer - raise now, as much as you can, from the best VCs who will find you. All companies go out of business for the same reason - they run out of money. Gotta keep fuel in the tank. Realistically, 2 year cycles work due to load on the CEO. Take a round, divide by 8-10 and get the burn rate of the company. BUT Just because you raise doesn't mean you need to spend it. Let reality drive the trigger on the spend, not the model on which you raised. Can you afford to not engage in the arms race? Play to win, but play smart. How much are you relying on playing smart compared to the other really smart guy.
Do I have the right team? ... Question that attracts a lot of attention. Two parts, right team for you and right team for board. Always a challenge as not everyone is right for every stage. Some laws for CEO... Lorden's Law: Do they bring / take energy? Get rid of those who take energy. Kellogg's law: Do you look forward to meeting them? Machiavelli's principle: Do they work well as a team? Warring princes = weak King. Sort it. Delivery track record: Some people are great at explaining why stuff didnt happen. What the board wants... CEO to be challenged. People not learning their role and 'sell by date' in that role is not next year.
How can I better manage the board. Boards try to pattern match and want to 'add value'. Ask potential Directors for an example of who they've seen manage a board best. Need to keep the board busy helping drive the company - get them working for you. The devil has work for idle hands.
Should I worry about competitors? Yes they are trying to kill you. Know the enemy. No. Leaders blaze their own trail. Never lead from a position of fear. Conflict!! What drives you? Vision or Competitor of Customer? Speak like you're vision driven ALL THE TIME, create a culture that's customer driven, make a strategy that's competitor driven (but dont talk about it like that.)
Are we focused enough (the answer is probably not!) Phenominal cosmic vision, itty bitty market focus. (See Genie from Aladdin.) Startegy is not vision, strategy is the plan to win.
Are we winning? The actual question is what is winning? Provokes great board discussion, so many different answers, get them out, get them surfaced.
"Management is doing things right, leadership is doing the right things." Peter Drucker

“Defaulter Was Close Friend of Postmaster’s,” Sudbury Star. May 28, 1919. Page 02. --- Court Hints That May Be Reason He Didn’t Get Notice --- Circumstances brought out in the trial Monday morning of Louis Bellcourt, an alleged Blezzard Valley defaulter, and which pointed strongly to collusion between Bellcourt and Postmaster Baisaillon, of Blezzard Valley, to defeat the M.S.A. and assist Bellcourt to evade service, led Magistrate Brodie to adjourn the trial for two weeks. Meanwhile M.S.A. authorities will make an investigation into this and probably some other cases from the same neighborhood.
Notwithstanding that two registered letters were posted to Bellcourt from Toronto, one of which contained him exemption papers and the other an order to report for medical re-examination, Bellcourt testified that he never received the latter letter, and backed his statement up by producing a letter from Postmaster Baissaillon to the effect that no registered letter other than the one containing his exemption papers ever came to Blezard Valley post-office. In view of the fact that prosecution was instigated against Bellcourt following the return of the letter to the registrar, marked ‘uncalled for,’ it is plain that someone is not telling the truth. This is the point that is being investigated,
When questioned by Crown Attorney McKessock, Bellcourt admitted that he was a close personal friend of the postmaster’s. ‘It looks very much like conspiracy to me,’ was Magistrate Brodie’s comment on the case. It was added that this is not the only incident of its kind in the district.
Six Defaulters Appear Altogether some six defaulters appeared Monday morning, and those whose cases were disposed of were given suspended sentence on the defaulter charge an fined $25 and costs for failing to notify the registrar of a change of address. All were low category men who had been granted exemption until their class was called and failed to report when ordered for re-examination.
Peter Sauve was first granted exemption until class two was called, but this was cancelled when the proclamation was issued calling up the 21-23 class. He had two brothers at the front, one of whom was killed, also a widowed mother to care for. He went to Hawke Junction, on the A.C.R. in 1917, shortly after getting exemption and failed to notify the registrar of his change of address. Suspended sentence was given on the charge of being a defaulter and a fine of $25 and costs levied for failing to notify the registrar. The magistrate stated that in meting out sentence he took into consideration the war record of the Sauve family.
Frank Butler was another young man who failed to report for medical re-examination and also failed to notify the registrar when he moved from Sudbury to Thor Lake. He was a B-2 man. A registered letter ordering him to report for medical re-examination, was returned uncalled for. His excuse that Naughton postoffice, to which the letter was sent, had been burned down and that the postmaster had since died of the ‘flu’ did not help his case any, for the letter arrived safe and sound in Toronto and all future efforts to locate Butler proved unavailing. He also was given suspended sentence on the major charge and fined $25 and costs on the lesser.
John Lorden, a category C man, also failed to report for medical re-examination and drew down a penalty similar to those previously recorded. He is a New Brunswick man.
A Startling Disclosure Alex. Landry, a category B man who faced a similar charge, startled the court by producing written evidence to show that he had paid Inspector Logan, at one time stationed at Foleyet enforcing the M.S.A., showing that on several occasions he had paid $6 ‘defaulter fees.’ The department representative in court took charge of the papers. This fact, however, did not save Landry from a conviction. He, too, was given suspended sentence on the defaulter’s charge and fined $25 and costs for failing to notify of a change in address. Landry said he was able to get a letter from his girl in Sturgeon Falls every other day, but never did he receive his registered notice to report for medical re-examination. He blamed Sudbury postoffice Landry admitted that he was aware that other men in his class were being re-examined and the court held that it was his duty to make enquiries.

Absurd og hysterisk
Regissør Lisa Lie har evnen til å lage gull ut av det tilsynelatende overflødige.
To bavianer, neandertalere – eller kanskje urmennesker?
Med overdreven britisk aksent og tekopp kommanderer Gladys slaven Charles: ”Slave is the provider, not the receiver!”.

The Unkindest Tide - Review
Rolling in a couple months late with this one. Incidentally, Incryptid is a wonderful series and I can’t believe I hadn’t read it sooner.
Spoilers for The Unkindest Tide and Patreon up to January 2020.
What a wonderful read! The Luidaeg! The Lordens! Answers to some burning questions!
I had thought for a long time that this was to be the last October Daye book and was very concerned about the number of loose ends. Figuring out there is more to come was a great pleasure.
I appreciate Toby using magic in her actual job as a private detective. This is a good use of it and I’m glad she’s able to make use of it.
Even better is Toby talking about her extended family - May, Raj, Jazz, Chelsea, the Brown kids, Dean, Quentin, Tybalt. She has a family that loves her and that she loves too.
Toby is right that she needs to help those closest to her first before helping Simon. The problem is that she delays fulfilling her side of bargains until something forces her hand - case in point, this entire book. I would be very surprised to hear she’s given Mags a biography of her mother already.
Pay your artisans, people. If you don’t pay them, they can’t continue to provide their goods. Good on Tybalt for paying for his groceries.
Hello Luidaeg! That solves the question of ‘Hasn’t it been more than a year since she told Elizabeth Ryan the Selkies had a year to settle their affairs?’.
Interesting that she thinks Oberon may not have had the power to turn Selkies into Roane. But the Roane saw Amandine and her daughters well before Janet broke Maeve’s ride.
New question: what caused the divide in the Three that led to the Moving Days?
Gilian: fennel and primroses. So becoming a Selkie did change her magic, but it’s close to what she would have had as a Dochas Sidhe. Interesting.
Hi Marcia! Hi Poppy!
Marcia’s “been in Faerie so long she doesn’t know what to do with a human hospital”? Not natural for a thin-blooded changeling, and not natural that no one’s picking up on that. And she looks about Gillian’s age? Toby’s known her for years, and despite them all getting delaying aging, someone should have noticed.
And unaffected by the transition to the Summerlands. Titania or Maeve, for sure.
At first when she was talking about the ‘prince in the rigging’ I assumed she meant Quentin, and wondered how she knew that. Now I think she meant Nolan. I don’t remember getting clarification on that.
Captain Pete! And confirmed: the Merrow Firstborn is a daughter of Titania by Oberon.
Dean, Dean wake up.
Confirmed: Dawn is Evening’s daughter. And slightly younger than August. So who’s the father? Maybe that doesn’t matter since Evening had a hope chest.
I like Pete, and she likes Dianda and Patrick, and I like her more.
Marcia’s more afraid of Pete than she is of the Luidaeg.
There’s another prophecy at play - the one Amandine’s afraid one, where her line brings back the Three. Probably by dying. But Toby can’t know about that yet.
“Again, sea witch. I’m allowed.” What a good kid.
Claude Anthony: “He looked even more anachronistic than the others, like he’d just wandered out of some hot new show about attractive people and their sexy problems” How did I miss this on the first few read throughs?
Patrick and Dianda! That answers the question of ‘Did Toby tell Patrick about the pixie colony’ with a firm ‘No.’. Does Patrick even know that Simon had been back in town? Did he know about the elfshot? Or has he assumed that Simon disappeared and is doing evil somewhere else?
And Toby shoves off that conversation for later.
Hello, Dianda’s asshole brother Torin.
And their father descends from a human while their mother doesn’t. Interesting that the last name itself is a gift to give to the heirs.
And now Patrick comes to make a deal with a Firstborn, to save the one he loves. How ironic that he will never know that’s what Simon did for him.
And Toby’s back in debt. She’s a hero, she can’t not save Peter.
The first and second requests could be twisted to be easy - help the Luidaeg with groceries, prick Toby’s finger and collect one drop.
The third - I never would have thought the Luidaeg would want to bring Simon Torquill back. No time limit on this one.
It’s fish time again!
Hello, unnamed Cephali man letting our heroes through.
“I have never seen anyone with any sense try to start a fight with Dianda in what I would consider the smart way, by sucker-punching her before she had a chance to respond.” I love you, Toby.
“How are you not dead? I saw them stab you”. New unnamed Cephali friend asks the right questions around here.
“We’re coming in. Please don’t stab us” Toby is really playing to her strengths, and I love it.
New Smurf Cephali is an idiot. Go Toby.
And now he’s dead.
Helmi and the now named Kirsti both think Toby’s great - good, she needs more fans.
I love how the Undersea fae speak.
Ok, unnamed Cephali is Helmi’s... something. On our side!
Back to the Ships without incident - and Toby may be getting another squire one day.
Poor Isla.
This is a fascinating insight into the Law and how it applies to fae-but-not-really fae. If Selkies without a skin are considered human, then the Law doesn’t count. All of these little loopholes.
Diva is half Roane and half Selkie, and that seems to be enough to avoid needing a skin. I wonder if that counts as non-human in terms of immortality?
Rene definitely knows who Quentin is. Fun!
And they’re gossiping about Toby in Halifax, this is great.
Toby’s growing stronger in her magical abilities.
A fae who understands the need to not mess with a crime scene - excellent. This book is filled with smart people.
Has Toby slept or ate since they got to the Duchy?
Back to the Lordens,
Oh, Peter. Anti-humanism is still present in the Undersea. I had hoped that wouldn’t be the case.
Marcia is good with flowers and pulled several that Toby doesn’t recognize. How do you make marshwater charms with plants from the Summerlands instead of the mortal world?
Holy shit, Tybalt took out part of her spine and now she’s paralyzed.
Huzzah for healing factors!
Back to the battle. People need to stop using Gillian as leverage.
Chryseis: the Cephali Firstborn! May or may not be alive, Pete doesn’t know.
Marcia using flower magic.
Holy shit, Pete notices there’s something weird about Marcia and then gets distracted from her questioning and doesn’t get back to it. That is some mind whammy. Assuming Marcia’s Titania, that’s her daughter who’s made it very clear that she hates her mother. Not a good place to be.
I love you, Pete. You are a friendly Firstborn and you have style.
How did Eira tell Torin that the Roane were returning? Was it before the elfshot, or has she been dreamwalking?
Patrick has a surrogate Firstborn now, that’s cool.
Toby has been able to convince the Luidaeg to try a new way. She is awesome.
How did Marcia know the sealskin belonged to a boy? Has she always known that, or was she able to hear a ghost in the skin?
The Luidaeg gets multiple magical scents, the Three probably smell like everything.
If only Amandine could see Toby now - it wouldn’t change anything. I hope Oberon, when he is eventually found, is proud of Toby.
What a good book.

18-year-old man charged with murder of Rotherham teenager Leonne Weeks
A man has been charged with the murder of 16-year-old Leonne Weeks. Shea Peter Heeley, 18, was arrested after the teenager was found dead on a path near Lordens Hill in the Dinnington area of Rotherham on Monday morning. A member of the public discovered her body. A post-mortem examination found the teenager died as a result of multiple stab wounds. Heeley, of Doe Quarry Lane, Dinnington, is due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Saturday.
Leonne was a beautiful daughter and sister who was very much loved and will be missed by all of us
Leonne Weeks' family
A 26-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on bail. One Salt Sea - Reread
Rosemary and Rue
A Local Habitation
An Artificial Night
Late Eclipses
As usual, spoilers up to The Brightest Fell and August 2018 for the Patreon stories. No spoilers for Night and Silence.
Dianda and Patrick! My favorite couple in this series. And the Lordens are probably the most stable family in all of Faerie.
But first! Quentin gets a knight!
I suppose Sylvester knew all along who Quentin’s parents were. I love that the High King and Queen went “Yep, this changeling is the perfect knight for our son the Crown Prince. It’ll be a great learning experience and also he respects her. There is no way this can go wrong.”
Aw, Quentin doesn’t know who Sylvester chose and specifically requested for it to be Toby! He is such a sweet kid.
Right, the Luideag was dealing with the Undersea last book. So if Raysel hadn’t yet kidnapped Dean and Peter, what else was going on? Was Evening planning on a war no matter what, and Raysel was the piece she could use?
Daoine Sidhe and Merrow are both Titania’s - there shouldn’t be any craziness in that bloodline. Though Raysel should be all Titania’s as well - could some of her craziness be due to the Kitsune factor? Or was that mostly due to being locked up in darkness for a decade? Probably the later.
Whoops, Toby knew Patrick’s name before being told. I assume that got mixed up during editing.
Why do Connor’s parents care so much about Toby being a changeling? A good portion of the Selkies don’t have skins.
There’s a lot of things you’ll worry about later, Toby. Luna entering your mother’s tower is something you should have thought about sooner.
April! It’s good to see you again.
I think Gillian and Dean are the same age. I always think of her as being younger even though that makes no sense.
I love Patrick. He’s barely holding it together but by God he’s going to remain calm and polite during this assassination attempt.
I don’t think Toby knows Malcom died in that war. She doesn’t mention it if she does.
I like Jazz a lot.
I like Raj a lot. He’s not just hanging out at Toby’s because of Quentin.
Toby thinks he’s only three hundred? Oh she definitely didn’t know he basically grew up with the Torquills.
Marcia continues to be suspicious.
Poor Raysel. She really did never escape Simon’s prison.
I don’t understand why I imagine every scene in the daylight instead of at night.
With the Fae living as long as they do, I’m surprised we don’t see more siblings who differ in age by decades - most of them tend to be around the same age. Ignore the changelings, the Firstborn and the Cait Sidhe and you have Dean and Peter with six years and Quentin and his sister at four years difference. Who else do we have? Walter and his sister, I suppose, and I don’t remember if we know how old those two are. Maden and his sister, I don’t think we have ages for. Arden and Nolan are only a few years apart.
Toby riding with Dianda in her wheelchair down the hill is amazing.
I really wonder what everyone knows about Raysel’s disappearance. I have to assume that Patrick knows his former best friend kidnapped Luna and Raysel and his sons’ disappearance is a direct result of that.
Poor Gillian.
How does Rayseline’s magic smell of mustard flowers and wax? I don’t know what Luna’s is, but Sylvester’s is dogwood and daffodils. Did her magic shift like Simon’s did?
And Toby almost dies again.
Hello Dugan, everyone’ favorite asshole.
Etienne, do you ever learn to think before you misspeak to Toby? You get better when Chelsea shows up.
I thought the leader of the night haunts was whoever died last? Why is the Devin haunt still the spokesperson? Is it because they’re dealing with Toby again?
Poor Margie.
So Toby doesn’t find out that May was the night haunt with Dare’s face in this book.
My opinion on strawberry-and-chicken sandwiches is that they don’t sound tasty but how would I know?
Does Dean eventually get his finger reattached? Poor boy.
“Half a heartbeat from a stolen child”? I think that’s about turning Gillian completely human.
“Given cause to eat of the fruit of the Judas tree” Is that about working against the false Queen and putting Arden on the throne? Until Arden was confirmed, the false Queen was legally the ruling power. Or has that prophecy not happened yet?
I wonder if Mary is one of the first of the Roane.
I love how much Quentin likes the Luidaeg.
So she doesn’t think Evening is involved? Or she does, but Evening is letting Raysel start the war that benefits her?
I am impressed Danny knows that much about hiking trail construction.
Hello, Poppy.
Raysel definitely knows more than she should and I don’t think she got it from Evening.
Why does the Luidaeg think Raysel’s blood smells of roses and frost? Is that a metaphorical scent, due to her childhood? Gilly at least gets the fresh cut grass from Toby and, I assume, the primroses from Cliff.
Oh, she doesn’t know that Connor’s not going to make it.
How does Dean get wet stone and eucalyptus if Patrick has mayflowers and cranberries?
The Lordens are the best.
I love Toby’s little charade with Quentin and Dianda.
The first time I read this, I thought it was a shame Toby gave up Goldengreen. It would have been so interesting to see how she dealt with it. Now I’m glad Dean has it. He’s a good kid.
So she does learn about the Fetches in this book.
I’m still waiting to figure out what the Selkies need to do. As of The Brightest Fell, their year is not yet up. Are the Selkies with skins going to be turned into Roane?
I always like it when Elizabeth shows up.
Poor Luidaeg.
So the death count for this book is Connor, Margie and maybe Dugan, I don’t remember what happens to him after he gets sent to the dungeons.
Next up: Ashes of Honor. Chelsea shows up!
