With the sangeet hangover still very much present, we were back to Mumbai and treated to baraat, pheras and everything grand at the awe-inspiring Antilia. Competiția STILL Best drivers cup 2018 și-a desemnat câștigătorii
Anul 2018 este unul special pentru STILL România, compania având oportunitatea de a se dezvolta împreună cu partenerii săi, precum și pentru că a împlinit 10 ani de activitate în țara noastră. Astfel, compania a sărbătorit organizând evenimentul STILL Best driver cup-concurs pentru stivuitoristi dedicat operatorilor de stivuitoare din cadrul companiilor partenere STILL în România. Marele premiu este reprezentat de o vizită la fabrica STILL din Hamburg.
Concursul STILL BEST DRIVER CUP are drept scop responsabilizarea clienților prin sporirea atenției față de costuri, productivitate și eficiență, conștientizarea importanței securității în muncă și a întreținerii zilnice a echipamentelor.
Competiția a avut loc în perioada 15 ianuarie 2017 – 15 aprilie 2018, iar finala competiției a fost organizată pe 27 aprilie. Câștigătorul a fost desemnat în urma unui test final de îndemânare și a unui test grilă cu întrebări despre întreținerea echipamentelor, testele s-au desfășurat în cadrul unui eveniment la Brașov, în incinta depozitului KHD.
STILL Best drivers cup este, așadar, un concurs destinat stivuitoristilor și își propune testarea abilităților acestora și desemnarea celui mai îndemânatic, dar și celui mai responsabil și productiv candidat, precum și prezentarea celor mai noi modele de stivuitoare și demonstrarea performanțelor acestora atât în competiție, cât și în demonstrații personalizate.

La start s-au aliniat în finală nouă concurenți. Pe locul 1 s-a clasat concurentul de la compania IAC Bals: Cosmin Ungureanu. Locul al doilea a fost ocupat de WELDE România, cu concurentul Popa Cristian, iar locul 3 de Bolog Teodor – compania HEINEKEN România.
”Ne dorim să continuăm organizarea acestui concurs și în anii următori și să cream o tradiție STILL în România”, au afirmat reprezentanții companiei.

Centenarul Filmului Românesc, proiect iniţiat anul trecut la Iaşi, cu ocazia Centenarului Marii Uniri, va ajunge la finalul lunii la Feldioara, judeţul Braşov.
Centenarul Filmului Românesc de la Feldioara propune publicului vineri, 30 august, începând cu ora 21,00, proiecţia peliculei “Serata“, regizat de Malvina Urşianu. Episodul 80: Serata
Serata (1971) Regia: Malvina Ursianu Cu: György Kovács, George Motoi, George Fureanu Gen: dramă, război Serata a avut avanpremieră la 3 mai 1971, în cadrul Zilelor filmului românesc, odată cu aniversarea a 50 de ani de la înființarea Partidului Comunist Român. Filmul a rulat în premieră pe 8 mai 1971, la Cinematograful Patria din București. De la data premierei, până în 2007, Serata a fost vizionat de peste 1.567.134 de spectatori, în cinematografele din România.
Filmul, regizat de Malvina Urșianu, îi are în rolurile principale pe George Motoi, György Kovács, Cornel Coman, Alexandru Drăgan, Mihai Pălădescu, Ion Roxin, Silvia Ghelan și Silvia Popovici. Pelicula prezintă participanții la o serata, organizată în vila unui profesor, în noaptea de 23 august 1944. Dincolo de propaganda comunistă, filmul oferă o imagine sobră a societății aristocratice din epocă.
Serata era caracterizat în cronica din revista Cinema (nr. 10/1983) ca „un punct de vedere asupra unui moment de răscruce în istorie”. Jurnalistul Cristian Tudor Popescu, doctor în cinematografie, spune despre Serata că este un film cu caracter politic și propagandistic al epocii comuniste, care descrie lupta comuniștilor în ilegalitate și în perioada cuceririi puterii.
Pentru filmul Serata, regizoarea Malvina Urșianu a primit în anul 1971 Premiul pentru regie al Asociației Cineaștilor din România (ACIN).
Sâmbătă, la ora 18,00, la Căminul cultural Feldioara, va avea loc proiecţia filmului “AGERPRES – Marea Unire, România la 100 de ani“, un documentar marca AGERPRES care prezintă cum a fost realizat acest deziderat al românilor.
Redacţia Video din cadrul Agenţiei Naţionale de presă AGERPRES prezintă în documentarul realizat cu ocazia Centenarului Marii Uniri de la 1918 cum a fost realizat acest deziderat al românilor. Povestea pleacă de la contextul istoric internaţional, ajungând la trăirile oamenilor de rând, care şi-au dorit un singur lucru: o ţară în care există acelaşi grai, acelaşi port, aceeaşi simţire, fără graniţe. Filmările au fost realizate pe teritoriul României, dar şi în Bucovina de Nord şi în Basarabia. Filonul istoric, cu date precise, este păstrat în documentar prin intervenţiile mai multor istorici, care preiau rolul naratorilor, iar latura dramatică, emoţională este pusă în scenă prin intermediul oamenilor care, prin mărturiile lor, evocă momentele trăite de străbunii lor sau chiar de ei. Documentarul Marea Unire – România, la 100 de ani este realizat de Mihuţ Năstăsache, Marilena Stănescu şi Sergiu Olteanu. Imaginea este semnată de Alfred Schupler, Sergiu Olteanu şi Andrei Cârlan. Reporteri au fost Marilena Stănescu, Mihuţ Năstăsache şi Camelia Moise. Grafica, sunetul şi montajul sunt semnate de Andrei Cârlan, asistent tehnic fiind Alex Vintilescu. Intrarea este liberă.
Cetatea Feldioara
Ultimul film din Caravana Filmului Românesc, “Duminică, la ora 6“, regizat de Lucian Pintilie, va fi proiectat în cetatea Feldioara, sâmbătă, 31 august, la ora 21,00, iar invitatul serii va fi Irina-Margareta Nistor.
Episodul 81: Duminică la ora 6 Duminică la ora 6 (1966) Regia: Lucian Pintilie Cu: Irina Petrescu, Dan Nuțu Gen: dramă
Duminică la ora 6 este primul film a lui Lucian Pintilie, apărut în 1966. Scenariul filmului dramatic psihologic și de dragoste este scris de Ion Mihăileanu și regizor. Rolurile principale aparțin actorilor Irina Petrescu, Dan Nuțu, Graziela Albini, Eugenia Popovici și Constantin Cojocaru. Filmul este plasat în România anului 1940 și prezintă povestea de dragoste dintre un băiat (Radu – Dan Nuțu) și o fată, (Anca – Irina Petrescu) studentă la arhitectură. Cei doi se întâlnesc la un bal popular marcat de violențele unui grup de huligani fasciști. Amândoi duc o luptă pe ascuns împotriva fascismului, având o viață palpitantă, dar periculoasă. Destinele lor se întâlnesc doar o secundă numai pentru a se îndepărta din nou, pentru totdeauna. În 1966, a primit Premiul special al juriului și Premiul de interpretare feminină (Irina Petrescu). În 1966 a fost prezentat la Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata din Argentina, intitulat El domingo a las seis, unde a câștigat Premiul special al juriului; Premiul „Opera Prima”; Premiul mișcării de experiment și cinecluburi; Premiul special al criticii; Premiul de interpretare feminină (Irina Petrescu). Intrarea este liberă. Iniţiat de ARTIS şi Asociaţia Obştească MIA, organizat de Primăria Municipiului Iaşi şi Ateneul din Iaşi, Centenarul Filmului Românesc a fost lansat pe data de 3 februarie 2018, la Iaşi, oraşul care a înregistrat momente importante din cadrul Marii Uniri a României. Proiectul va continua până în 2020 inclusiv, împlinind harta celor 100 de evenimente filmice.

Dar asta nu înseamnă că alte titluri nu au rămas în posteritate și nu sunt iubite cel puțin la fel de mult (uneori poate chiar mai mult) decât cele trei. ”Otello”, ”Aida”, ”Falstaff”, ”Don Carlo” sau ”Un Ballo in maschera” (”Bal mascat”) sunt opere care, de-a lungul istoriei, au făcut fericiți mulți pasionați de muzică și, de asemenea, au lansat multe voci de valoare.
Opera Națională București este una din scenele pe care Verdi a fost prezent încă de la început. Chiar dacă nu toate operele sale au fost reprezentate aici, o bună parte din creația sa a fost reprezentată în acest teatru liric. Astăzi, îmi îndrept atenția spre ”Un Ballo in maschera” (”Bal mascat”) și spectacolul ce a avut loc pe 17 aprilie 2019.
Este a doua montare cu ”Bal mascat” din ultimii ani și pot spune că, din cele două văzute la București până acum, aceasta este preferata a mea și este cu mult mai valabilă artistic decât cea precedentă. Deși mulți cârcotași ar putea să întrebe: ”Ce legătură are Verdi cu perioada anilor ’20?”, eu le răspund că atâta timp cât subiectul unei opere nu este schimbat și atâta timp cât acesta este universal-valabil și permite plasarea lui în orice epocă și orice spațiu cultural și, de asemenea, atâta timp cât există un discurs și un parcurs regizoral liniar, unitar și coerent, aceste întrebări nu-și au rostul. Am văzut montări așa-zis clasice, fără absolut nicio idee regizorală, în care se făcea doar paradă de voci și costume, însă acțiunea era uitată undeva pe planul x. Așadar, dragi contestatari ai inovației în operă, prefer un ”Trovatore” cu extratereștri decât o Traviată care nu știe ce face cu mâinile și care stă doar în centru înțepenită și cântă, pentru că domnul regizor nu a știut ce altă indicație să-i dea.
Așadar, actuala montare cu ”Un Ballo in maschera” se poate mândri că are și coerență și frumusețe, respectând, în același timp, și subiectul creat de Antonio Somma. Grischa Asagaroff a dat culoare și un nou sens capodoperei verdiene, mutând acțiunea în America anilor ’20, dar modelând totul astfel încât libretul original să nu sufere nicio modificare. În sprijinul său au venit Luigi Perego (care a creat o scenografie luxuriantă, cu accente de albastru închis, violet și tonuri de gri, parcă subliniind nenumăratele schimbări din psihologia personajelor), Gigi Saccomandi (light designer-ul, lumina fiind un personaj de sine stătător în acest spectacol) și Renato Zanella (care a creat coregrafia divertismentului din ultimul tablou, cel al balului). În ansamblu, s-a creat un spectacol multi-fațetat, care reușește să pună în valoare subiectul elegant, dar tragic, precum și pe soliști.
Distribuția din 17 aprilie a constituit un adevărat succes de public. Riccardo, guvernatorul britanic, a fost interpretat cu măiestrie de tenorul Daniel Magdal, un obișnuit al scenei bucureștene. Prin vocea sa de tenor lirico-dramatic, artistul a îmbrăcat sala Operei în sunete catifelate și puternice și a îngemănat tehnica vocală cu naturalețea jocului scenic, rezultând un personaj bine conturat, cu spaimele, emo��iile și defectele sale. Alături de el s-a aflat soprana Bianca Mărgean care nu încetează a mă uimi cu fiecare apariție a sa. De o frumusețe fizică izbitoare, artista deține și o voce de o uimitoare căldură, cu un ambitus la fel de uimitor, în care gravele se ridică deasupra forței orchestrei și în care acutele în pianissimo sunt asemenea unei dantele rafinate. În plus, Bianca Mărgean este una dintre acele soprane care chiar știe ce să facă cu mâinile. Cu alte cuvinte, este și actriță, nu doar cântăreață și este conștientă că opera nu este un concert, ci un spectacol în care nu doar vocea contează (chiar dacă aceasta primează). Apoi, mezzo-soprana Sorana Negrea dă din nou dovadă că este una dintre vocile de valoare pe care Opera bucureșteană le deține în prezent. Ulrica a ei este înfricoșătoare, datorită culorilor întunecate ale vocii, dar are și o latură umană, grație prezenței scenice a cântăreței. De la gesturi până la priviri, totul vorbește despre supranatural și despre moarte – un rol care i se potrivește de minune Soranei Negrea. Lucian Petrean, proaspăt întors de la Tel Aviv unde a repurtat un fulminant succes în rolul Scarpia din ”Tosca” de Giacomo Puccini, se ridică, din nou, la așteptările cele mai înalte. Un bariton nobil, cu o expresivitate aparte, un timbru unic, oricând recognoscibil, Lucian Petrean se înscrie în galeria marilor baritoni ce au dus faima României dincolo de hotare. Renato al său capătă dimensiuni titanice, aproape, și nu doar datorită vocii impresionante și pătrunzătoare, ci și unui joc scenic bine gândit și echilibrat. Ultima, dar nici pe departe cea din urmă, Veronica Anușca a reușit, ca de fiecare dată, să lase publicul fără glas prin trilurile excepționale, prin căldura și claritatea vocii, caracteristici ce o recomandă ca una dintre stelele operei bucureștene și naționale. Agilitățile vocale și ușurința cu care le realizează îi permit să abordeze roluri ca Lucia, Gilda și, iată, Oscar (pajul) și să o așeze între cele mai de seamă interprete din lume. Alături de toți aceștia, demni de amintit sunt și Filip Panait (Tom), Iustinian Zetea (Samuel), Florin Simionca (Silvano), Ciprian Pahonea (Primul judecător), Narcis Brebeanu (Servitorul Ameliei).
Las la sfârșit corul Operei bucureștene, pentru a-i aduce, ca de fiecare dată, laudele binemeritate. Rămâne unul dintre cele mai bune coruri de operă de pe mapamond și, astfel, aduc un omagiu celui care a condus cu brio ansamblul de-a lungul timpului, maestrul Stelian Olariu, dar și felicitări către învățăcelul său și actualul dirijor, Daniel Jinga. Orchestra a sunat bine, ca de fiecare dată, dirijorul Iurie Florea reușind să pună în valoare vocile soliștilor și menținând sub control sonoritățile ce riscau să iasă din matca fosei.

”Viva Verdi!” de Tudor Sicomaș Giuseppe Verdi a fost, este și va rămâne per sempre regele operei italiene. Acordurile sale extrem de melodioase, ariile de tip ”șlagăr”, duetele, scenele ce rămân mult timp în sufletul și mintea ascultătorilor, fragmentele dansante – toate acestea au făcut din maestrul de la Busetto cel mai iubit compozitor de operă din toate timpurile.

Report finds house flips returning to pre-financial crisis levels House flipping is still almost as prevalent as it was before the 2008 financial crisis, but it’s not the harbinger of doom it was then, the Wall Street Journal reported. Housing analytics firm CoreLogic found that 10.6 percent of U.S. home sales during the fourth quarter of 2018 were flips, a percentage not far from an 11.3 percent house flip rate in 2006. But house flippers “are very different today than they were in the past,” CoreLogic deputy chief economist Ralph McLaughlin told the outlet. “Even though we see hype and hysteria in popular culture, this isn’t necessarily something to worry about.” [TRD]
Savvy real estate investors eye ‘cannabiz’ opportunities While marijuana and commercial real estate don’t seem like a pair of fields that would make a great mix, an increasing number of investors from the latter are looking seriously at the potential offered by the former should legalization become more widespread throughout the country, The Real Deal reported. Justin Ehrlich, a founding of New York-based Churchill Real Estate Holdings, owns a stake in pot industry bible “High Times” magazine, as well as legal weed outfits in Los Angeles and elsewhere. TRD noted that Ehrlich is one of several notable real estate executives monitoring marijuana-related events as certain states move to loosen restrictions on the controlled substance for medicinal and recreational uses. HBO show says PE firms are bad news for mobile home owners Mobile home owners who rent the land their houses sit on are getting pushed out of mobile home parks by rising rents, according to a report from HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” Private equity firms have set their sights on mobile home parks across the country, and rents typically go up when they buy them, forcing some owners to either move their homes or abandon them due to high moving costs. Mobile homes also depreciate in value over time. “Mobile homes may be a terrible investment for people buying them, but they’ve been an incredible investment for Warren Buffett,” John Oliver said. Clayton Homes, owned by Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, is the largest manufacturer of mobile homes in the country. [TRD]
Zell bemoans dying breed of real estate ‘jungle’ entrepreneurs Tough-talking billionaire Sam Zell, chairman of Chicago-based Equity International Group, said that within the last three decades the real estate industry has gone from a “very jungle, entrepreneurial environment” to one that is more “institutionally driven.” Zell’s remarks, which came last week at New York University’s annual REIT symposium, also saw him put forth himself and Boston Properties co-founder and chairman emeritus Mortimer Zuckerman as among the few remaining individuals in the old guard, “entrepreneurial” crowd. “We’ll be a nice footnote,” he quipped. Zell’s comments came as one key institutional investor in the real estate sector, BlackRock, shook up its executive ranks. [TRD]
New ‘Opendoor Agent Partner Program’ a pivot back to humans? Opendoor plans to refer some of its seller clients to outside partner real estate agents, according to Inman — less than a month after the iBuyer startup’s CEO Eric Wu said that “automation will happen,” adding that agents’ would only be “an adviser to the customer.” The startup’s new “Opendoor Agent Partner Program” will pair sellers whose properties don’t meet Opendoor’s all-cash offers requirement with “Agent Partners.” Those so-called agent partners will fork over a referral fee that averages 1 percent of the property sale price when a sale closes, Inman reported. Brooklyn nabe bounces back after subway shutdown reversal News that New York City’s L subway train wouldn’t be shutting down after all in April has sent prices and interest in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood shooting back up, a number of real estate industry sources told The Real Deal. The market in the hipster haven took a hit after the Metropolitan Transit Authority said in 2016 that it would have to close for 15 months part of the tunnel that the L train runs through for repairs, but picked back up soon after news broke that the closure wouldn’t be happening after all. “Literally 24 to 48 hours after the announcement that Cuomo made — overnight — people showed up and started signing leases,” TerraCRG founder and CEO Ofer Cohen told TRD. Brazil tops ranking of foreign investors buying in South Florida Investors from Brazil bought more homes in South Florida last year than investors from any other country, according to a new report from the Miami Association of Realtors. Brazilians were behind 12 percent of all foreign home purchases in the tri-county region, putting them in the top spot on the association’s ranking. Colombia and Venezuela shared the second spot, representing 11 percent each. This is the first time Brazil has taken the top spot since the association started ranking foreign investments in 2012. International buyers shelled out a total of $8.7 billion on residential properties in the three counties last year, up 22.5 percent from 2017. South Florida, as previously noted by TRD, has long been a hotspot for foreign real estate investment. [TRD]
JPMorgan sells majority stake in wavy Chicago tower An Ares Management fund has agreed to acquire JPMorgan Asset Management’s majority stake in the rental portion of a mixed-use Chicago tower, The Real Deal reported. JPMorgan unloaded the stake in wavy Jeanne Gang-designed Aqua Tower for nearly $190.5 million, property records show. The 86-story tower, which houses 474 apartments and 224 condos, is currently the tallest operating tower in Magellan Development Group’s Lakeshore East district and the ninth-tallest tower in Chicago, though that latter honorific will soon go to another building, the 101-story Vista Tower. JPMorgan Asset Management reportedly paid $182 million back in 2010 for the majority stake in the Aqua Tower. [TRD]
Netflix could buy Hollywood’s historic Egyptian Theatre Technology giants are transforming the real estate landscape in Los Angeles, and now Netflix could be poised to acquire the iconic Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. The streaming media services provider is currently in talks to buy the landmarked theater, which is currently owned by the nonprofit group American Cinematheque, Deadline reported. As part of the deal, Netflix and American Cinematheque would split the theater’s operation, with the former operating it on weekdays and the latter operating it on weekends. Netflix would premiere some of its own films at the theater, according to the outlet. American Cinematheque bought Egyptian Theatre from the city of Los Angeles for $1 in 1996. [TRD]
Big Chinese developer mulls IPO for property management biz China’s largest developer is considering a potential initial public offering for its property management business, Bloomberg reported. Shenzhen-based China Vanke has talked with advisers about listing its property management business in a move that could happen next year and raise up to $1 billion. China Vanke would follow in the steps of other Chinese developers, such as Foshan-based Country Garden Holdings, in taking its property management unit public. But talks are still at an early stage, and a representative for China Vanke’s property management unit told Bloomberg that there aren’t any plans for a listing at present. Vanke snapped up a 5 percent stake in Cushman & Wakefield before its own IPO last year. [TRD]
Toronto sees spike in Chinese real estate investment After a crackdown on foreign home buyers in British Columbia, Chinese real estate investors are setting their sights on Toronto, according to Bloomberg. Chinese investment in foreign real estate retreated in 2018, and in Vancouver it dropped off as several new taxes went into effect, Bloomberg reported. Toronto, however, saw an uptick in investments from Asia, according to the outlet. Investors are “looking at Toronto now because they’re seeing a better arbitrage on that than they are [in Vancouver],” Avison Young’s Bal Atwal told Bloomberg, which noted that part of Toronto’s increased allure is its growing technology and financial services sectors. Aspiring young T&T model Gabriella Bernard’s 20-minute short film “Black Hair” will be released at the T&T Film Festival today at Movie Towne and it’s based on how she became a victim of “hair shaming” during the latest edition of the Caribbean Next Top Model competition. The competition, which completed its fourth season this year, was hosted by former Miss Universe Wendy Fitzwilliam, who is also the executive producer. Although the show was shot since last year and aired in February this year, Bernard now wants an apology from Fitzwilliam for being coerced to chemically straighten her hair or face elimination from the competition and for being called unprofessional for defending her right to keep her hair natural during the episode in question. In a clip of the episode in which she faced the situation, which was released on social media, a visibly upset Bernard, who was in a salon, was heard saying she did not want her hair chemically straightened and also giving reasons why. One of those reasons, Bernard said, was that she wanted to embrace the “natural beauty and empowerment of black people.” “You need to understand that my hair is my identity…people seek me out just because of my hair,” she told the hairdresser. In the clip, after Bernard agrees to eventually chemically treat her hair, Fitzwilliam is heard saying: “Darling…what was all of that in my salon? I need you to explain to me why you were so unbelievably naughty and unprofessional?” Bernard also took to boredpanda.com to explain her experience in the episode. She explained that “black people” have been conditioned “for so long to believe that our attributes as black people should be hidden or ashamed of. Why must we continue to conform to make others comfortable? If one wishes to wear her hair straightened she should, if she wishes to wear her hair natural she should also.” She described Fitzwilliam’s attitude towards her as a “passive, aggressive and scolding.” Bernard also took to her Facebook page where she called on Fitzwilliam to apologise to her publicly. "This is ludicrous as far as I can see. I do love Wendy and am proud of her accomplishments on behalf of our country, at the same time I’m so appalled at this attitude and scolding towards a gorgeous young woman with a head of healthy beautiful hair,” she added. Asked why she endured the treatment and stayed in the competition, where she finished third, Bernard said, “When I weighed the pros and cons, I decided to stay. Yes, yes, yes a million times I should have left, but looking back I told myself I had come so far, left my job, looked up to Wendy, wanted to be an international model all my life, I was so close…Did I come all this way to give up now?” She added: “I would always look back and wonder “what if.” So I decided to jump, hoping to win, but I came in third place. You can imagine how disappointing it was making such huge sacrifices, all for nothing.” In the clip, after eventually allowing her hair to be relaxed, Bernard blurted out “Wow…I look like Wendy!” However, Bernard admitted that it was all an act. “I decided to fake it. No, I really didn’t think I looked like Wendy, but it was a good line to say. No, I didn’t love the hair ... I took all my attitude and swallowed it. I wasn’t me. I wasn’t truly me, and I cried about it every single night until I got it chopped off two months later.” Bernard said she is now all about wanting to help empower other people like her to stand up for themselves and be true and authentic to their identity. Bernard’s documentary was selected to screen at the 2018 Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival (Sep 21-25) and the 2018 Baltimore International Black Film Festival (Oct 2-8). According to Bernard, “It will help to spread my message and inspire others as I talk openly about recovering from this cheap reality show stunt, racial episodes in my past, and being unapologetically black in a society that has Eurocentric standards and expectations.” Questions sent to Fitzwilliam for comment yesterday went unanswered.

Statt von den angenehmen Dingen zu berichten, zum Beispiel von einer gelungen Bahamas-Konferenz am 7. Mai im sonnigen Leipzig mit 430 Gästen und ein wenig darüber zu räsonieren, was bei so viel Zuspruch gegen das allmähliche Durchdrehen der Meinungsführerdeutschen in nächster Zeit zu unternehmen sei, sehen sich Redakteure und Autoren der Bahamas und jene zahlreichen Leute, die ihnen zuhören wollen, mal mit ideologisch motivierten Raumverboten durch Universitäten, mal mit pöbelnden Pressure Groups konfrontiert, die z.B. Tjark Kunstreich in Frankfurt am Reden hinderten und Thomas Maul in Leipzig in Form eines feministischen Statements wüst beleidigten. Zu den unangenehmen Dingen gehört, dass die Redaktion Bahamas recht behalten hat, als sie vor bald drei Jahren mit der Wortprägung Team Merkel davor warnte, dass sich die Sortierung in die guten Deutschen hier und ein „xenophob durchdrehendes“ Volksgemeinschafts-Pack dort auch in antideutschen Kreisen an der Haltung zur Flüchtlingspolitik der Kanzlerin bemessen könnte. Zu den xenophob Durchdrehenden werden inzwischen alle gezählt, die zum Beispiel die Erdoğanfans unter den Türken im Land für unausstehlich und gefährlich halten. In Gestalt von Fußballfans hatte dieses Pack seinen Unmut über die deutschen Fußballer türkischer Herkunft, Mesut Özil und İlkay Gündoğan, bekundet – wegen deren am 12.5.2018 in London öffentlich eingestandener faschistischen Gesinnung. Und schon kam es zu pogromähnlichen, antitürkischen Manifestationen: „Beim Testspiel in Österreich wurden beide Akteure von deutschen Fans bei jedem Ballkontakt in der Anfangsphase ausgepfiffen. Es waren nur wenige Fans und die Pfiffe ließen irgendwann nach. Aber das Thema schwelt damit weiter.“ (Der Westen, 3.6.2018) Für diese Fans war die mangelnde Loyalität von Gündoğan und Özil zur Bundesrepublik Deutschland, zu deren Nationalmannschaft sie nun einmal gehören wollen, ganz sicher wichtiger, als der Umstand, dass der faschistische Potentat, dem sie als ihrem Präsidenten gehuldigt hatten, z.B. Deniz Yücel für ein Jahr und einen Tag als Geisel in einem seiner überfüllten Knäste gehalten hat. Gündoğan und Özil als Vertreter eines stolzen deutschen Türkentums auszupfeifen, das sich am 24.6. schon wieder mit 65 Prozent der abgegebenen Stimmen als aggressiv-faschistische Gegengesellschaft unangenehm in Erinnerung gebracht hat, war auf alle Fälle richtig und dürfte bei der Erdoğan-kritischen Mehrheit der Deutschen mit türkischen Wurzeln nicht zu Panikattacken wegen bevorstehender Pogrome geführt haben. Als hain (Verräter) oder sahte kardeş (falscher Bruder) haben die deutschen Fans Mesut Özil im Jahr 2018 jedenfalls nicht bezeichnet und schon gar nicht in der stolzen Gesamtzahl von 40.000 Schreiern im Berliner Olympiastadion, ergänzt um 7.000 weitere beim Public Viewing auf dem Kreuzberger Oranienplatz. Das blieb deutsch-türkischen Fans vorbehalten, als am 7.10.2010 Mesut Özil im Länderspiel gegen die Türkei für Deutschland antrat. „Dass die Herzen der Fans in Kreuzberg für die türkische Mannschaft schlagen, wird spätestens bei den Nationalhymnen deutlich. Die türkische Hymne entlockt dem Publikum wahre Jubelstürme, bei der deutschen kommen den Fans höchstens einige Buh-Rufe über die Lippen. Die heftigsten Reaktionen löst aber Mesut Özil aus: Der Stürmer erntet während des Spiels ein gellendes Pfeifkonzert, sobald er in die Nähe des Balls kommt. Dass er mit seiner Herkunft für die deutsche Nationalmannschaft spielt, nimmt halb Kreuzberg ihm übel.“ (Berliner Morgenpost, 8.10.2010) Damals gab es noch keine Flüchtlingskrise und auch kein Team Merkel. Dass man mit Faschisten, die ihrem falschen Bruder Verrat am türkischen Blut vorwarfen, prima auszukommen gedachte und deshalb dem deutsch-türkischen Verräter von offizieller deutscher Seite ausdrücklich nicht zur Seite springen wollte, war damals schon ausgemachte Sache: „Berlins Innensenator Ehrhart Körting (SPD) setzt auf Verständigung: ‚Fußball bringt mehr Integration als jede kluge Rede eines Politikers. Grade Fußball kann Kids beibringen, fair miteinander umzugehen‘, sagt er auf dem Oranienplatz.“ (ebd.) Aber was sind schon 47.000 Faschisten of colour gegen eine postfaschistische Mehrheitsgesellschaft, die – Rostock-Lichtenhagen, Hoyerswerda und Solingen mahnen – nur auf den Anlass wartet, um Ausländer in den Tod zu hetzen und ihre Geschäfte und Autos anzuzünden. Nachdem am 27.6.2018 die deutsche Nationalmannschaft mit Mesut Özil auf dem Platz gegen Südkorea verloren hatte und aus der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft ausgeschieden ist, passierte erwartungsgemäß: Nichts. Ein fußballbegeisterter Freund der Redaktion britischer Herkunft berichtete am Morgen danach auf Facebook, was linken oder gar antideutschen Genossen so gar nicht über die Lippen gehen wollte: „In all seriousness, the Berliners are taking it in their stride. I’ve seen no smashed Asian shops or cars. No aggressive behaviour. Hardly any public crying. Mostly tactically sound self critical game analysis. A self reflective look at their high expectations. Some desire to pick a few other teams and watch football, relaxed and without the stress. Very little blood or vomit on the streets. And, if the packed underground train is any indication, an enthusiastic desire to get back to work. Actually, considering how gloomy, rude and grumpy the Berliners usually are, it could be fair to say they are even happier than usual.“ Am gleichen Tag veröffentlichte die Jungle Worlddie jüngste Erkenntnis eines ihrer Blogger, der unter schwierigen Bedingungen im faschistischen Österreich überleben muss: „Am allerdeutschesten war mal wieder Franz-Josef Wagner in Bild: ‚Auch Verlierer gehören zu uns. Empfangen wir sie nicht als Fremde‘, dekretierte er großzügig und ließ dabei durchschimmern, was die größte Drohung in einem xenophob durchdrehenden Land ist, nämlich zu jenen ,Fremden‘ gemacht zu werden, vor denen sich alle ganz schlimm fürchten und die daher mit der ganzen Gewalt zu rechnen haben, zu der Deutsche fähig sind.“ (Jungle WM World, 28.6.2018) Was der Merkel-Österreicher Bernhard Torsch der willig mitgehenden Gemeinde, wenn schon nicht als manifeste Kollektiv-Tat, – die war bedauerlicherweise ausgefallen – so doch als jederzeit drohende andrehen wollte, zwang einen anderen, nicht minder antideutschen Durchgedrehten aus dem Team Merkel, zu prodeutscher Parteilichkeit beim Fußballgucken, und irgendwie ist die Redaktion Bahamas schuld an seiner Qual. Der umtriebige Facebook-Antideutsche rief bereits am 24.6.2018, nach dem Sieg der deutschen Mannschaft über die schwedische aus: „Dinge, die ich Hetzern, Demagogen, Wutbürgern und wie sie sonst noch heißen mögen den Rest meines Lebens ganz ganz übel nehmen werde: 1) Dass ich aus politischen Gründen zum allerersten Mal seit 35 Jahren gehofft habe, eine deutsche Mannschaft gewinnt in einem WM-Spiel.“ Er trug nach: „Hätten die gestern verloren, wäre die Hölle losgewesen. Die Hölle …“. Zwei eher fußballferne Redakteure der Bahamas haben bereits am 7.10.2010 in einer Westberliner Eckkneipe aus politischen Gründen, nämlich in Solidarität mit Mesut Özil und gegen seine echtenBrüder, mit großer Befriedigung das Ende des Länderspiels Deutschland-Türkei gesehen, weil sie via Monitor mit einer Fan-Hölle konfrontiert waren, für die noch die 0:3-Niederlage zu gering ausgefallen ist. People of colour, das wissen nicht nur faschistische Türken, machen Fußball erst richtig schön, auch sonst bereichern sie uns Mehlsäcke immer, weil sie eben of colour sind und die richtige Rasse im Zeitalter des Antirassismus ein hohes Gut ist. Gewiss, wir leben in einem xenophob durchdrehenden Land, dessen weiße Bewohner wegen Özil Kreuzberg in Schutt und Asche legen wollen. Anderseits aber gibt es in Deutschland nicht nur auf dem Fußballplatz die grüne Farbe der faschistischen Verheißung, und vor allem gibt es hier anders als in Österreich keine rechte Regierung. In anderen europäischen Ländern ist es sogar noch schlimmer als in Österreich. In denen gibt es zwar auch eine rechte Regierung, aber keine bekennenden Moslems, ob mit oder ohne colour, was zu Inzucht und Degenerierung führen muss. Torsch: „Einen Blick auf die Zukunft des Sports in einem renationalisierten Europa der Grenzzäune gewährte unterdessen die polnische Mannschaft: Elf blonde Klone, die ohne Intelligenz und Eleganz, aber mit ganz viel ,Herz‘ spielten und den polnischen Fans gaben, was polnische Fans wollen, nämlich eine Mannschaft ohne ,Fremde‘, deren elende Performance das zwischen ewiger Opferhaltung und aggressivem Nationalismus pendelnde Gemüt bedient.“ Man muss solche Stimmen aus Österreich auf der Website einer linksantideutschen Wochenzeitung aus Berlin ernst nehmen. Die wilde Lust, anderen Ländern genau die islamische Migration aufzudrücken, mit deren negativen Folgen man selber nicht mehr zurechtkommt, ist schon zynisch genug. Aus Deutschland ausgerechnet die Bevölkerung Polens als genetisch degeneriertes, minderwertiges Menschenmaterial zu bezeichnen und ihnen dazu noch wegen „ewiger Opferhaltung und aggressivem Nationalismus“ den deutschen Peter unterzujubeln, ist mehr als die Entgleisung eines geistigen Mitvergewaltigers auf der Kölner Domplatte. Das ist Ausdruck übelster deutscher Polenfeindlichkeit, die unter anderem auf Max Weber zurückgeht, der wegen der Ansiedlung polnischer Landarbeiterfamilien auf deutschem Junkerland vor der Degenerierung der ostpreußischen Bevölkerung gewarnt hatte. Seit Jahren verunglimpfen nicht mehr rechte Deutsche, sondern die Mitglieder von Team Merkel Polen aus edelster ureuropäischer Motivation. Dessen Regierung hat skandalöser Weise an die Deutschen gerichtet erklärt, das polnische Volk trage keine Verantwortung für den Holocaust und hat das sogar in Gesetzesform gebracht, gerade so, als ob der Holocaust nicht eine gemeinsame europäische Schuld wäre, die man anscheinend am besten durch islamische Masseneinwanderung abträgt. Das polnische Auschwitz-Gesetz hatte in seiner ersten Fassung berechtigte Kritik aus Israel und den USA erfahren und ist deshalb im strafrechtlichen Bereich entschärft worden. Heute heißt es zur Verbitterung aller echten Europäer aus Israel: „‚Wir waren uns immer einig, dass es falsch ist, die deutschen Konzentrationslager in Polen als ‚polnische Konzentrations- oder polnische Todeslager‘ zu bezeichnen. Das spielt die Verantwortung Deutschlands dafür, diese Konzentrationslager geschaffen zu haben, herunter. Die polnische Exilregierung während des Zweiten Weltkrieges versuchte, das Vorgehen der Nationalsozialisten zu stoppen. Sie wies die westlichen Alliierten auf den systematischen Mord an den polnischen Juden hin.‘ Netanjahu stimmte der Intention des Gesetzes also ausdrücklich zu: Die polnische Nation als Ganze dürfe nicht für den Holocaust mitverantwortlich gemacht werden.“ (Deutschlandfunk, 28.6.2018) Die Redaktion Bahamas wird sich mit der unangenehmen Tatsache abfinden müssen, dass die letzten verzweifelten Anhänger der gescheiterten deutschen Europapolitik ihnen und ihren Zuhörern auch weiter auf den Nerven herumtrampeln. Mehr als Saalschutz gegen Störungen und kreative Lösungen bei Hörsaalverboten stehen ihren Gastgebern nicht zur Verfügung. Auch für die Weiterentwicklung der in den Referaten der Leipziger Konferenz (die in dieser Nummer nachzulesen sind) vorgetragenen Thesen, in denen es ja viel um Gesellschaftsperspektiven jenseits von Islamisierung und Migrationsdruck ging, bleibt weniger Zeit als wir uns wünschen würden. Die deutsche Krise und ihr zunehmend durchdrehendes Personal wird uns weiter beschäftigen. Soweit sie antideutsch durchdrehen, werden sie verstärkt auf einem von einer rechten Regierung angeführten Land herumhacken, dessen Ministerpräsident sich gegen Deutschland hinter polnische blonde Klone ohne Intelligenz und Eleganz gestellt hatte und für ein weltoffenes, linkes Israel der offenen Grenzen werben. Der Deutschlandfunk hat am 28.6.2018 schon einmal die Melodie angestimmt, die gemeinhin gegen Merkel-Kritiker, vulgo Verfechter eines „renationalisierten Europas der Grenzzäune“ (Torsch) zum Einsatz kommt: „Israel gibt sich knallhart gegenüber Geflüchteten aus Syrien.“ Und weiter heißt es: „Die syrischen Zivilisten flüchten zu Zehntausenden aus dem umkämpften Gebiet im Südwesten Syriens, das nur 60 Kilometer von der israelischen Grenze entfernt ist. Die Flüchtlingscamps – von der israelischen Grenze aus mit bloßem Auge zu sehen – wachsen stündlich an. Es gibt dort weder Wasser, noch Strom, die Versorgungslage ist dramatisch. Dennoch wird Israel keine Flüchtlinge aufnehmen. Der Grenzübertritt müsse verhindert werden, macht Energieminister Yuval Steinitz in einem Radiointerview deutlich. Eine Haltung, die Yaakov Amidror, der ehemalige Leiter des Nationalen Sicherheitskabinetts in Israel, unterstützt: ‚Falls jemand an den Grenzzaun kommt und medizinische Behandlung benötigt, wird er diese bekommen. Humanitäre Hilfe und medizinische Hilfe, ja. Aber wir werden uns nicht in ein Land verwandeln, das diese Flüchtlinge aufnimmt.‘ […] Und der frühere Leiter des nationalen Sicherheitskabinetts Yaakov Amidror sieht keinen Grund von dieser Haltung abzurücken. ‚Wir reden hier von zwei Gruppen, in denen jede bereit ist, die Mitglieder der anderen zur ermorden, wenn sie gewinnen würde. Israel sollte sich nicht in diesen jahrhundertealten Konflikt einmischen. Und wir sollten nicht glauben, dass wir jemand retten würden, mit dem man Mitleid haben müsste. Deswegen müssen wir sehr aufpassen, uns nicht in einen Krieg ziehen zu lassen, der nicht unserer ist.‘“ Die Redaktion Bahamas stimmt Yuval Steinitz und Yaakov Amidror gegen jeden Einwand aus irgendeiner deutschen oder europäischen NGO unbedingt zu.

Nu cred că există cineva căruia să nu-i placă o poveste frumoasă de dragoste, cu atât mai mult cu cât are împletită în iţele sale şi o tentă întunecată, sângeroasă. De când lumea, oamenii au fost atraşi de iubire, dar şi de moarte, de pasiune, dar și de violenţă. Iată de ce curentul verist-naturalist a fost imediat îmbrăţişat de publicul de operă de pretutindeni. Oferea spectatorilor întâmplări din viaţa oamenilor simpli, obişnuiţi, departe de curţile regale şi de lumea aristocraţiei, făcând astfel ca totul să fie mai aproape de sufletul şi înţelegerea auditoriului.
Poate cele mai cunoscute şi iubite două creaţii ale curentului verist (cele care au şi îndurat cel mai bine trecerea timpului, aflându-se în permanenţă pe afişele tuturor teatrelor lirice din lume) sunt ”Cavalleria rusticana” de Pietro Mascagni şi ”I Pagliacci” de Ruggero Leoncavallo. De ce atâta popularitate pentru aceste două titluri? În primul rând, datorită partiturilor încărcate de melodicitate, de pasiune şi lirism, în acelaşi timp. Atât Mascagni, cât şi Leoncavallo au fost fini observatori ai oamenilor, surprinzând în operele lor caractere umane puternice şi complexe şi făcând acest lucru prin intermediul muzicii – un aspect mult mai greu de realizat decât un portret literar sau în acuarelă. Şi cu toate acestea, au reuşit să dea posterităţii unele dintre cele mai iubite şi memorabile pagini muzicale din istora operei.
Opera Naţională din Bucureşti s-a mândrit întotdeauna cu prezenţa acestor două titluri pe afişele sale, ele fiind prezentate de fiecare dată în spectacole-coupé care mai de care mai inovatoare şi provocatoare. Nu pot uita montarea împrumutată de la Covent Garden, cea în regia lui Franco Zefirelli, care a atras mulţi spectatori de-a lungul câtorva stagiuni. Însă era timpul şi pentru o producţie autohtonă, aşadar Ion Caramitru (care a mai montat la opera bucureşteană ”Evgheni Oneghin”) a fost chemat pentru a imagina lumea Siciliei de odinioară asezonată cu iubire, cu gelozie, cu ură, cu sânge, cu crime, dar şi cu puţin umor. În viziunea lui Caramitru, cele două opere au loc în aceeaşi localitate din sudul Italiei, la diferenţă de câţiva zeci de ani. Dacă în opera lui Mascagni, regizorul păstrează atmosfera apăsătoare şi mereu ameninţătoare, în capodopera lui Leoncavallo, el schimbă cu totul cadrul, aducând acea notă de culoare şi optimism atât de necesar în cadrul unei seri dominate de spleen şi întuneric. Scenografia şi costumele (în tonuri de negru, gri şi albastru în ”Cavalleria” şi în vesele nuanţe colorate în ”I Pagliacci”), semnate de Viorica Petrovici subliniază atât atmosfera sumbră din”Cavalleria”, cât şi culoarea din ”I Pagliacci” (păstrând undeva, în colţul inimii o lacrimă tragică). La toate acestea contribuie din plin şi light desgin-ul realizat de Chris Jaeger, un colaborator vechi şi constant al tandemului Caramitru – Petrovici şi care şi de această dată a compus situaţii de lumină adecvate fiecărui moment (de remarcat momentul Intermezzo-ului din prima operă, când s-a creat un adevărat tablou-vivant din mişcări şi lumină, dar şi momentul celebrei arii a lui Canio, ”Vesti la giubba”, când personajul a fost decupat din decor cu ajutorul light-design-ului).
Bianca Mărgean (Santuzza)
Distribuţia serii de 21 martie a fost una de excepţie pentru ambele opere. În primul rând, ”Cavalleria rusticana” a beneficiat de o interpretare cum de mult nu s-a mai auzit la Bucureşti. Etern geloasa şi pasionala Santuzza a fost Bianca Mărgean, una dintre cele mai bune soprane dramatice pe care le-am ascultat vreodată. Pot spune că încă de când am aplaudat-o pentru prima oară în Amelia din ”Bal mascat” de Verdi, tânăra şi frumoasa solistă mi-a lăsat impresia unei noi stele pe cale de a se forma şi de a lua cu asalt nu doar opera bucureşteană, ci marile opere din lume. Şi în ingratul rol scris de Mascagni, Bianca Mărgean s-a dovedit imbatabilă prin catifelarea, puterea şi inflexiunile întunecate ale vocii sale, imprimând şi un necesar tragism şi o disperare paroxistică prin jocul scenic desăvârşit. I s-a alăturat în acest tur de forţă tânărul tenor Adrian Dumitru (Turiddu, amantul Santuzzei, dar şi al frumoasei şi nestatornicei Lola), căruia par să i se potrivească mai bine rolurile de tenor dramatic din repertoriul verist decât cele de tenor lejer (cum ar fi recentul debut în Ducele de Mantua din ”Rigoletto”). Şi el s-a aflat într-o formă vocală foarte bună, demonstrând că poate să-şi conducă vocea peste orchestră (care de data asta a sunat puţin cam prea în forţă, obligând soliştii la eforturi suplimentare). Alături de ei s-au aflat Vicenţiu Ţăranu (o plăcută surpriză în rolul lui Alfio, rivalul lui Turiddu şi soţul Lolei, etalând o voce caldă, bine controlată şi destul de puternică), Sorana Negrea (o frumoasă, atrăgătoare Lola, care dintr-un rol mic a realizat o apariţie de forţă, atât vocal, cât şi scenic) şi Andreea Iftimescu (aflată la debut în rolul mamei lui Turiddu, Lucia – şi ea a subliniat trăirile şi zbuciumul interior ale bătrânei prin jocul simplu, dar bine echilibrat şi prin vocea caldă şi nuanţată).
După un final alert şi cutremurător al ”Cavalleriei” a urmat tragicomedia trupei ambulante de actori şi paiaţe din ”I Pagliacci” de Ruggero Leoncavallo. Frumuseţea partiturii a fost scoasă în evidenţă de prezenţa unor artişti remarcabili. Canio, şeful trupei teatrale, a fost portretizat cu forţă, aplomb şi o voce de o rară putere şi nobleţe, a italianului Francesco Anile (prezent pe scena operei bucureştene şi în dificilul rol verdian al lui Otello, dar şi solist la Metropolitan Opera din New York). Poate cel mai bun Canio pe care l-am auzit în ultimii 15 ani la Bucureşti, Francesco Anile a dat dovadă că vârsta nu este un impediment în privința calităţii vocale, etalându-şi splendida voce de tenor şi impresionantele acute, atinse cu perfecţiune şi uşurinţă uimitoare. Un alt debut al serii a fost cel al Simonidei Luţescu (cunoscută publicului bucureştean din spectacole precum ”Le Nozze di Figaro”, ”Falstaff” sau ”La Traviata”, unde interpretează roluri ca La Contesa, Nannetta, respectiv Violetta Valéry) în Nedda, frumoasa şi mult-prea-tânăra soţie a lui Canio. Soprana şi-a demonstrat încă o dată calităţile vocale, tessitura aparent fragilă, dar care uimeşte prin forţa acutelor, adăugând la toate acestea şi un joc scenic plin de candoare şi naturaleţe. Cu alte cuvinte, un debut de succes şi care îi anunţă un parcurs interesant în repertoriul verist. De urmărit!
Surprize plăcute s-au dovedit a fi şi baritonii Vasile Chişiu – care a dat viaţă lui Tonio (clovnul cocoşat şi intrigant, un adevărat Iago) prin vocea sa profundă şi prevestitoare de tragedie în celebrul Prolog – şi Iordache Basalic în rolul Silvio, amantul Neddei, care a bucurat auzul spectatorilor cu vocea-i de bariton nobile, cu minunate accente lirice. O prezenţă-surpriză a fost şi balerina Monica Petrică (care a semnat şi coregrafia), care a oferit un moment poetic de balet neo-clasic în Intermezzo din ”I Pagliacci”, amintind de vechea tradiţie a commediei dell’arte, aceea de a distra publicul cu momente de virtuozitate între acte. Nu în ultimul rând, vreau să subliniez prezenţa tânărului tenor Paul Lungu în rolul lui Beppe-Arlecchino, care a strălucit şi căruia îi prevăd un destin promiţător (poate chiar preluând unul dintre rolurile principale de tenor din acest spectacol-coupé), atât timp cât îşi va alege cu înţelepciune repertoriul.
Cor, ”Cavalleria rusticana”
La pupitrul dirijoral s-a aflat maestrul Vlad Conta, care a condus cu măiestria-i cunoscută orchestra operei (care, din păcate a dat, pe alocuri, semne de nesiguranţă şi mici decalări, rezolvate totuşi, imediat), dar şi excepţionalul cor pregătit de Daniel Jinga, care a primit aplauze şi ovaţii la scenă deschisă la finalul fiecăreia dintre cele două opere.
”Cavalleria rusticana” & ”I Pagliacci” – emoţie, bucuria unor interpretări deosebite, demne de marile scene lirice ale lumii, două partituri încântătoare, toate acestea unite într-o montare simplă, dar grăitoare, ce pune în lumină pure sentimente umane. Aşadar, o reţetă de succes a Operei Naţionale din Bucureşti, un spectacol care merită felicitat şi îndelung reprezentat.

Report finds house flips returning to pre-financial crisis levels House flipping is still almost as prevalent as it was before the 2008 financial crisis, but it’s not the harbinger of doom it was then, the Wall Street Journal reported. Housing analytics firm CoreLogic found that 10.6 percent of U.S. home sales during the fourth quarter of 2018 were flips, a percentage not far from an 11.3 percent house flip rate in 2006. But house flippers “are very different today than they were in the past,” CoreLogic deputy chief economist Ralph McLaughlin told the outlet. “Even though we see hype and hysteria in popular culture, this isn’t necessarily something to worry about.” [TRD]
Savvy real estate investors eye ‘cannabiz’ opportunities While marijuana and commercial real estate don’t seem like a pair of fields that would make a great mix, an increasing number of investors from the latter are looking seriously at the potential offered by the former should legalization become more widespread throughout the country, The Real Deal reported. Justin Ehrlich, a founding of New York-based Churchill Real Estate Holdings, owns a stake in pot industry bible “High Times” magazine, as well as legal weed outfits in Los Angeles and elsewhere. TRD noted that Ehrlich is one of several notable real estate executives monitoring marijuana-related events as certain states move to loosen restrictions on the controlled substance for medicinal and recreational uses. HBO show says PE firms are bad news for mobile home owners Mobile home owners who rent the land their houses sit on are getting pushed out of mobile home parks by rising rents, according to a report from HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” Private equity firms have set their sights on mobile home parks across the country, and rents typically go up when they buy them, forcing some owners to either move their homes or abandon them due to high moving costs. Mobile homes also depreciate in value over time. “Mobile homes may be a terrible investment for people buying them, but they’ve been an incredible investment for Warren Buffett,” John Oliver said. Clayton Homes, owned by Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, is the largest manufacturer of mobile homes in the country. [TRD]
Zell bemoans dying breed of real estate ‘jungle’ entrepreneurs Tough-talking billionaire Sam Zell, chairman of Chicago-based Equity International Group, said that within the last three decades the real estate industry has gone from a “very jungle, entrepreneurial environment” to one that is more “institutionally driven.” Zell’s remarks, which came last week at New York University’s annual REIT symposium, also saw him put forth himself and Boston Properties co-founder and chairman emeritus Mortimer Zuckerman as among the few remaining individuals in the old guard, “entrepreneurial” crowd. “We’ll be a nice footnote,” he quipped. New ‘Opendoor Agent Partner Program’ a pivot back to humans? Opendoor plans to refer some of its seller clients to outside partner real estate agents, according to Inman — less than a month after the iBuyer startup’s CEO Eric Wu said that “automation will happen,” adding that agents’ would only be “an adviser to the customer.” The startup’s new “Opendoor Agent Partner Program” will pair sellers whose properties don’t meet Opendoor’s all-cash offers requirement with “Agent Partners.” Those so-called agent partners will fork over a referral fee that averages 1 percent of the property sale price when a sale closes, Inman reported. Brooklyn nabe bounces back after subway shutdown reversal News that New York City’s L subway train wouldn’t be shutting down after all in April has sent prices and interest in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood shooting back up, a number of real estate industry sources told The Real Deal. The market in the hipster haven took a hit after the Metropolitan Transit Authority said in 2016 that it would have to close for 15 months part of the tunnel that the L train runs through for repairs, but picked back up soon after news broke that the closure wouldn’t be happening after all. “Literally 24 to 48 hours after the announcement that Cuomo made — overnight — people showed up and started signing leases,” TerraCRG founder and CEO Ofer Cohen told TRD. Brazil tops ranking of foreign investors buying in South Florida Investors from Brazil bought more homes in South Florida last year than investors from any other country, according to a new report from the Miami Association of Realtors. Brazilians were behind 12 percent of all foreign home purchases in the tri-county region, putting them in the top spot on the association’s ranking. Colombia and Venezuela shared the second spot, representing 11 percent each. This is the first time Brazil has taken the top spot since the association started ranking foreign investments in 2012. International buyers shelled out a total of $8.7 billion on residential properties in the three counties last year, up 22.5 percent from 2017. South Florida, as previously noted by TRD, has long been a hotspot for foreign real estate investment. [TRD]
JPMorgan sells majority stake in wavy Chicago tower An Ares Management fund has agreed to acquire JPMorgan Asset Management’s majority stake in the rental portion of a mixed-use Chicago tower, The Real Deal reported. JPMorgan unloaded the stake in wavy Jeanne Gang-designed Aqua Tower for nearly $190.5 million, property records show. The 86-story tower, which houses 474 apartments and 224 condos, is currently the tallest operating tower in Magellan Development Group’s Lakeshore East district and the ninth-tallest tower in Chicago, though that latter honorific will soon go to another building, the 101-story Vista Tower. Netflix could buy Hollywood’s historic Egyptian Theatre Technology giants are transforming the real estate landscape in Los Angeles, and now Netflix could be poised to acquire the iconic Egyptian Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. The streaming media services provider is currently in talks to buy the landmarked theater, which is currently owned by the nonprofit group American Cinematheque, Deadline reported. As part of the deal, Netflix and American Cinematheque would split the theater’s operation, with the former operating it on weekdays and the latter operating it on weekends. Netflix would premiere some of its own films at the theater, according to the outlet. American Cinematheque bought Egyptian Theatre from the city of Los Angeles for $1 in 1996. [TRD]
Big Chinese developer mulls IPO for property management biz China’s largest developer is considering a potential initial public offering for its property management business, Bloomberg reported. Shenzhen-based China Vanke has talked with advisers about listing its property management business in a move that could happen next year and raise up to $1 billion. China Vanke would follow in the steps of other Chinese developers, such as Foshan-based Country Garden Holdings, in taking its property management unit public. But talks are still at an early stage, and a representative for China Vanke’s property management unit told Bloomberg that there aren’t any plans for a listing at present. Vanke snapped up a 5 percent stake in Cushman & Wakefield before its own IPO last year. [TRD]
Toronto sees spike in Chinese real estate investment After a crackdown on foreign home buyers in British Columbia, Chinese real estate investors are setting their sights on Toronto, according to Bloomberg. Chinese investment in foreign real estate retreated in 2018, and in Vancouver it dropped off as several new taxes went into effect, Bloomberg reported. Toronto, however, saw an uptick in investments from Asia, according to the outlet. Investors are “looking at Toronto now because they’re seeing a better arbitrage on that than they are [in Vancouver],” Avison Young’s Bal Atwal told Bloomberg, which noted that part of Toronto’s increased allure is its growing technology and financial services sectors.
