I spent some time working in Peru and when I was there I took on the challenge of hiking Manchu Picchu Mountain, which overlooks the famous ruins of Manchu Picchu. It was a much harder climb than I had imagined, made worse by my short legs and the giant stone steps that lead the way in scorching heat. When I looked down at the views below from such a height many of the vistas felt like I was in a hazy dream world. The colourful tropical plants along the way really kept me going when I wanted to give up and turn back and I believe my memory of their colours have influenced this piece. When I finally made it back down the mountain (spurred on by Jeff Buckley and Neil Young in my ears) after many hours to look around the ruins, two llamas greeted me and have made themselves present in the left hand corner of the painting. When I was 17, I was dating this guy (Chris) and at some point in our short relationship, I thought to myself "geee, I wouldn't mind marrying this guy." 

He was the one who introduced me to fusion and Williamsburg, before they became mainstream. I distinctly remember a hybrid Peruvian/Vietnamese restaurant that we used to frequent. They served an entree that I would only describe as a combination of succulent shrimps swimming in a creamy, garlicky sauce around a ball of rice. 

Last weekend, I suddenly became enthralled by some saffron I had lying around the house and was obsessed with using it in one of my dinners. So on a whim (or not really), I pulled out some fish, bought shrimp, googled a few recipes and set to work.

I get goosebumps every time I can shout out to the world that I am proudly Peruvian, that through my jewelry designs others can learn about my beautiful country PERU, that through my work women who collect the huayruro seeds are fairly treated and we create jobs for them. Over 20 countries participated in a one of a kind fashion show where diplomatics from different countries showcased the dress of contemporary styles of their countries.

"Peruvian Memories", Acrylic on canvas, 70 x 70cm. 🎨 When I was almost finished this canvas I realised I had painted my trek up Machu Picchu mountain in Peru. Many, many, MANY steep giant steps, super hot sun beaming down, colourful tropical plants and alpacas wandering around the ruins when I finally got down, plonked myself behind an ancient wall and had a well deserved picnic. Only for my MP3 player with Jeff Buckley and Neil Young I don't think I would have ever gotten to the bottom 😂.
