The Monkey King (2023) would've been much better without...

*WARNING: SPOILERS*

Lin secretly working for the Dragon King. It overly complicated the movie and felt like a Disney "Hercules" rip-off. You know what would be better? If after days of Monkey King mistreating Lin and her finally realizing he's a jerk…THEN Dragon King would ask her to betray the Monkey King. Given her bad experience with Monkey King she'd be much more willing to betray him, and possibly more conflicted about it later.

I feel like we really lost something when we started looking at writing as a reader-centric product meant to appeal to the desires of a specific audience rather than a writer-centric approach of someone writes whatever particular thing particular compels them/whatever weird thing the demons in their head want to talk about, and people out there who are also compelled, and/or relate, find that writing. A lot of discussions of writing really center around what readers want rather than a writer's exploration. Sometimes as a reader I don't know what I want. I click on a fic or pick up a book I'm not sure about but that looks interesting, and I love it. Reading what I expect to get is it's own joy, but we always need to expand our horizons and not get mad at creators for not always writing what we want/expect.

#This applies to other media too #Like movies or TV or theater #Idk man like #It's a very the customer is always right attitude with books these days #And I think it has leaked into fic writing as well #People really get the “this isn't what I personally enjoyed” and “this thing is objectively bad” mixed up #Like people can leave whatever reviews they want on my books they paid for it #But I've had people who liked OFMD be like well I didn't like this because it wasn't OFMD #Well I didn't say it was did I?#And never forget that fic commenter I got who was like um I don't like that you had QuinObi in this but otherwise it was good #Ok???#KCrabb rambles #Writing things

I'm not getting into The Giving Tree discourse...

#personal #delete later #idk i just saw a post of the “alternate ending” comic on my dash and everyone praising it as an improvement and “fixing” the original #which i kinda resent #while tulli and i was taking my nephew to a book store we walked around the kids section and found the giving tree and we read through it #and i was so stricken by how profoundly sad it is. it's not a happy story #in the end both versions tell the exact same lesson. but one flat out tells you and the other makes you sit with a pit in your stomach #and work to find the answer #i dunno it's kids literature but kids literature is important. i don't wanna discredit anyone's bad memories with the book but also i think #sometimes it's ok to make kids a bit sad and upset with fiction.#tweet that goes “what if romeo and juliet didn't kill themselves and explained to the audience that family feuds are bad”#idk you can't seriously read the original book as an adult and say it's glorifying self-martyrdom #when the final drawing of the book is of an old tired man sitting on arotting stump with his hat fallen to the ground #again i don't wanna invalidate people's feelings if they enjoy the alt version i think it's really nice too. but the original has its #purpose too. imagine if at the end of the lorax they show that the boy did it and replanted the world happy ending #wait they did that in the movie shit #i dunno i just love somber children's literature. tulli and i are talking about moomin right now and how the series ends with the moomin #family just leaving. and nobody gets to say goodbye to them. their friends have to find ways to live with the emptiness they've left behin

#YukiPri rambles #it's nothing serious #just have had a stream of unfortunate disappointments #nothing major and each time i'm like well ok that could have been worse and i'm glad it wasn't #but the cumulative result is just me kinda feeling droopy inside despite trying to continue lookin chipper outside #'wilted' i think is best descriptor for me rn #trying to tell myself that retail therapy isn't the answer here #In case folks are curious #the disappointments are:#1) dad was in a car accident and no one was hurt but gave me a huge scare #2) was given a day off at work in exchange for working a weekend and was looking forward to both #but they asked me last minute nevermind come in instead and i had to cancel all the plans i'd made and couldn't reschedule #3) movie i wanted to see on said day off is no longer playing in local theaters so it's either convince mum to drive an hour or give up #4) had an afternoon tea planned with mum and her friends and was looking forward to it for a month and only eating out this month #had reservations and outfit picked out and everything #but then a few days before landlord scheduled repairs for that day and wouldn't listen when we said we had plans #so i stayed home so mum could go and i'm glad she could go but sad #5) went to work this morning and there'd been a flood in the office from a customer leaving the bathroom sink running #and the torrent of water came down on my desk specifically ruining all of my books/personal stuff #i got reimbursed but it's just really sad bc some of those things were free/gifts that i can't get back and i hate throwing out books #especially ones i never got to read but they were completely drenched through and unsalvageable...#6) had an outing planned this weekend i was really looking forward to but we probably can't go bc weather is bad #i think there were a few others but that's most of the big ones #i am wilted and just want to curl up and not move

#unscientific aside #newmann #pacific rim #thinking about them again today #it's very easy to read hermann's animosity during the movie as him being pissed off at newt for his 'completely crazy'#theories getting attention + being a massive nuisance in general #that's exactly what it looks like if you just listen to WHAT he's saying #however if you pay attention to WHEN he says it & pay attention to his face when no one is looking it's very clear there's more going on im #like the kaiju entrails comment. newt has all these tables with guts set up right next to the line & has clearly been working there for age #theres a big pile of intestinal-looking tubes over on hermann's side of the floor already! not a peep from hermann!#but then when newt tries to join the conversation he happens to throw another little squidgy bit & suddenly hermann jumps on him about it #brings up in front of the marshall how CONSTANT this unprofessional conduct is while also cutting newt off #he physically puts himself between newt & pentecost #interrupts newt every time he tries to talk #starts making snarky little personal comments AT newt to discourage him - 'don't embarrass yourself' 'yes [just get to the point]'#'this is the point where he goes completely crazy' [significant look at newt]#keeps hovering in the background looking between newt & pentecost #like. ok he is SO MAD that newt is getting pentecost's attention here. obviously #the thing that does it for me though is how sad and resigned he looks when newt finally does get to the point #this is not the face of an angry rival #this is the face of a man with ulterior motives for his animosity #i dont think newt has any ulterior motives hes aware of lol he thinks hes in a movie about 2 geniuses vying for scientific superiority #happens to be in love with hermann but hasnt realized because hes so mad at him all the time #he only realizes how much hermann cares when he offers to drift with him

Her laughter fills the cavern, and Maui realizes he's made a mistake by showing her he cares. Trying to bluff his way out of this situation, he replies: "Team? You mean that girl with the canoe and that goofy little chicken? We weren't a team. I just used her to get my hook." Mini Maui, not bright enough to see what Maui is doing, gets insulted on Moana's behalf, slapping him painfully in the chest, to which Maui eyes him in frustration. If only his tattoo could play along, maybe they could stop painting a larger target on Moana's back.

Everyday I honestly appreciate that they sorta changed up a bunch of characteristics in all of the ninja for the movie like. It just make sense...

Aside from it being a whole entire new universe, they literally go to highschool (which is never shown in the series) contributing to changing the ninja's personality a bit

The series and movieverse counterparts of each ninja grew up in an entirely different environment, so it does make sense for their character to be slightly different from eachother!!!

Take Lloyd as an example: he's much more socially awkward, shy and insecure compared to his series counterpart , one of the factors to this being the fact that he was basically teased and bullied his whole entire life while in the series while he (used) to be hated by basically everyone too, after knowing Lloyd was the destined green ninja the tables have turned. And series Lloyd was still pretty young too(am I making any sense help)

But yeah the same applies to the other ninjas,, since we haven't actually get to explore what they're whole background is like in the movie, it's safe to assume that their personal life does in fact make up the type of character they are
