The Bratty Belle
Chapter 1
Summary: You’ve just moved to the city and want to get to know your new neighbours. One very snarky and very handsome one in particular presents you with a challenge.
WC: 2k
After spending all day unpacking, you finally sat down to observe your new surroundings: you’d kept most of your old furniture, like the vanity table perched in the corner along with your beloved princess bed- complete with an intricately carved wooden headboard. The room was pleasantly familiar beside the new addition of white chiffon curtains that hung around your bed, shrouding you in a comforting cocoon. You let out a dreamy sigh, fiddling with the numerous pillows and plushies littered all over your plush bedding. You might be old enough to move to the big city and have your own condo, but you’ll still cuddle your tatty old teddy to sleep.
Peering out the window, you observe the neighbouring houses strewn along the street opposite, a green meadow separating the complexes. Most of them had a door and mailbox per floor, signifying that a different person resided on each of the levels. The same could not be said, however, for the last house at the very end of the street, which stood detached and boasted a single entryway. It was the only house you could see into being that it was directly opposite yours- unlike the other condos, which joined together in rows a little further up the road. You’d only moved in 2 days ago but noticed that the blinds were shut and the lights always remained off. Maybe no one lived there?
As a reward for your gruelling work unpacking, you took some candy along with your sketchpad and headed out to the field outside your new home. Deciding against another layer over your pink mini dress, you grabbed a picnic blanket and staked out the perfect spot - cosy and tucked away so that the neighbours down the road wouldn’t notice you. Your feet kicked the air playfully as you doodled the flowers in your line of sight, humming contentedly with a cherry-flavoured lollipop hanging from your lips. You were so engrossed in your sketch that you almost didn’t notice the shadow looming over you, blocking the warm sunlight.
“Who are you?” A tall man with dark features frowned at you and you looked up, mirroring his frown.
“I don’t talk to strangers.” You huffed, returning your attention to your notebook. That wasn’t strictly true- you were bubbly and befriended anyone who would have you but this man in particular intimidated you.
“What are you, ten?” He scoffed and raised his thick eyebrows, forehead wrinkles deepening.
Much to your annoyance, you could sense that he wasn’t leaving before he got a satisfactory response - so you put your pencil down and looked up at him again. His cerulean blue eyes shone so brightly they practically twinkled and a sharp spark flew through your heart at the sight. Rugged, almost-black hair choppily framed his chiselled face, which had smudges of dirt and sweat flecking his tanned skin. A manual labourer, perhaps?
“I’m Bunny. Jus’ moved in over there.” You turn around and point at the apartment behind you. “And you are?”
“Happy to see you.” His deep, raspy voice replied teasingly.
“I meant your name.” You corrected him snappily.
“My real one or a fake one like you just gave me?” You pout your lips; you didn’t like his sharp tongue.
“I’m James. James Kelly.” He said after a while of staring at your scrunched-up face. “I’ll call you by your stupid pet name if you crave affection that badly.”
Your mouth gaped open at his callous words and you felt as though you’d been unmasked. It was undoubtedly pathetic but the truth was you considered your first name to be too harsh, too cold. You much preferred being sensitively referred to by an affectionate pet name- one that people often didn’t realise they were being duped into using, assuming it was real. But not him.
“You won’t get the opportunity to use it, I’ll make sure of that.” You crossed your arms and furrowed your brows.
“Well you’re just a little ball of anger aren’t you?” He chuckled, finding your short temper adorable. “Very tense for one so young.”
“And you’re very nosy for one so old.” You gather your colouring pencils into your fluffy pencil case, your creative inspiration rattled by his presence. You surmised that he was at least 10 years your senior; his hands looked weathered but still supple, his crows feet visible but not yet entrenched.
“Hey, you don’t have to move, I’m leaving.” He protests but you’re already on your feet. “Alright moody, suit yourself.”
You shoot him a displeased look as you clutch your sketchpad tightly against your chest, turning your back to him and taking a step forward.
“By the way.” He adds and you halt tentatively. “You should really wear a longer dress if you’re gonna be laying down like that. I could see your panties.”
Your cheeks flush a burning red and you screw your eyes shut in embarrassment.
“They’re cute though. I like the strawberry print.” You can feel his grin beaming through his words and you want nothing more than to run away and never see his stupid handsome face again.
“Leave me alone.” You attempt to say confidently but it comes out as more of a squeak. You tried to walk off with as much dignity as you could manage under the pressure of his burning gaze but you ended up frantically skipping back, wanting to go home and bury your face in your pillows as soon as possible.
“What a rude man.” You thought. “Rude and irritatingly attractive.”
Later that evening, you took it upon yourself to bake several lots of chocolate chip cookies- eager to use them as a way of getting into your new neighbour’s good graces since you lived off a steady diet of praise and compliments. You separated the different batches and ordered them into various paper bags, each lovingly wrapped with a ribbon and placed delicately into a woven wicker basket. Glancing into the mirror before you set off, you manoeuvred your lace-trimmed tank top down a little to accentuate your cleavage- you loved to watch men struggle to maintain eye contact with you.
After determining your chest looked too bare, you bounded over to the bedroom to retrieve your favourite necklace- a dainty silver rabbit pendant. As you fiddled with the clasp, something out of the window caught your eye- you noticed that the house usually shrouded in darkness had a glimmer of light peeking through its half-opened blinds.
Curiosity inevitably got the better of you so you grabbed your baked goods and made a beeline to the dark house, intrigued by the prospect of who its resident might be.
Clearing your throat and brushing some creases out of your skirt, you press the sooty doorbell and hope your mystery neighbour is in a sociable mood. The hopeful smile is wiped off your face when the door opens and you see the same rude man from this morning before you.
“Look at that! My very own girl scout.” He laughs incredulously and you form a face of disgust.
“It’s you.” You recoiled.
“Try saying that with less repulsion.” He retaliated, eyes flicking between your frowning face, your tits and the basket of cookies. “Coming to a man’s house and being disappointed that he lives there. That a hobby of yours?”
“N-no, I didn’t know who lived here.” You stuttered, taking in the sight before you: he must’ve just gotten out the shower as his hair was dripping wet and his shirt unbuttoned, a silver cross necklace dangling over his collarbones and positioned between his firm pecs.
“Thought you said you don’t talk to strangers, let alone turn up at their house.” He cocked his head to the side, leaning against his doorframe. “Uninvited, at that.”
“I don’t. At least not the rude ones who make comments about a girl’s underwear.” You retorted petulantly.
“Hey, that was me looking out for you. Don’t know what kind of pervs live ‘round here- they could take advantage of a girl like you. Those for me?” He points at the basket.
“I-I guess.” You go to take out one bag but he snatches the whole basket. “What do you mean a girl like me?”
“Oh you know-“ He speaks casually, mouth half full of his first helping of baked goods already. “Ditzy. Spoilt and naive.”
You huff in disbelief- you’d hardly had two conversations with the guy and he’d managed to insult you several times already.
“Don’t get offended, princess. I’m sure you’re not used to people speaking so candidly with you but welcome to the real world.” He makes a face indicating that he was impressed with your confectionary, licking the crumbs off his fingers. “This your first time living away from home?” He points his second cookie at your face before stuffing that in his mouth too.
“Uh, yeah.” You drawl, confused. What planet was this guy from?
“Alone?” He lowers his voice, staring hungrily into your eyes.
“Yeah.” You squeak, wondering why your confidence had abandoned you.
“Shouldn’t have told me that.” He sneered. “I could be a predator and you’ve just armed me with the knowledge that you have no one to protect you.” His eyes look crazed and you get the sense that he got a kick out of playing around with you.
“Well, are you?” You reply unamused and he drops the act, looking at you through squinted discerning eyes.
“Mm, no.” He sniffed. “Haven’t got the stomach for it. Great cookies, by the way. You’re quite the little baker.”
You can’t resist the smile that creeps up on your face, delighted with his approval. “I try.” You humbly gleam, teetering on your tiptoes.
“Aw, you actually look sort of pretty when you’re not scowling.” Your glowing face drops in an instant, marred by his insult.
“Sort of?”
“Yeah. Like in an endearing but bratty child kind of way.” He notices your sullen face, tensed up with disapproval and confusion. “You’re not really my type, sweetheart.”
“Y-you’re not mine either!” You spit out a little too fast.
“The only difference is I don’t care.” He snorts and you remain in stunned silence, your ego bruised beyond words. “What’s the matter? Never had a man uninterested in you? Come in, I’ll make you a consolatory coffee.”
He gestures for you to enter and you walk in cautiously, following his lead to the lounge. His house was minimalist, fitted with sleek black furniture and a surprisingly clean kitchen at the other end of the living room.
“I don’t drink coffee. And what is your type then?” You sink down onto his leather armchair and cross your arms.
“I like a more mature, developed woman.” You look down at your large round breasts. “I meant emotionally.” He adds before you can say anything.
“I’m plenty mature.” You think grumpily. You knew better than to base your self-worth on the validation of a man but goddamn it, you wanted him to like you even if you didn’t like him.
“My type is also mature men.” You countered haughtily.
“I don’t recall asking.” He pours himself a coffee and sits down opposite you, continuing to steal glances at your chest.
“I also like them wealthy.” You add, spurred on by his disaffection.
“Like your daddy?” He smirks as he takes a sip and you scowl at him.
“Oh no, not the frown again.” He falters mockingly. “If looks could kill…you know Bunny, you shouldn’t let things get to you so easily.”
“Can’t help it. I’m sensitive.” You mumble half-mindedly, preoccupied with plotting all the ways in which you could seduce him. You tried to have self-respect, you really did, but it was just so hard. Especially when you’d just been dealt such an unprecedently juicy challenge; a man who didn’t want to sleep with you? It was practically unheard of and you humbly decided you would take it upon yourself to cure him of this affliction.

Supporting someone through grief
For reasons, I'm revisiting things I wrote around the time my father died (several years ago, not recently), and found a post.
(Note: parts of the original post are highly personal, so I'm not linking it here in this post, which I'm hoping will be more general, be used by more people.)
It included a list of things people could do that would actually help--because lots of people said, "Let me know if there's anything I can do." But I didn't trust those offers. And at the time, those offers felt more like a burden than help ("Did they actually mean it?" and "What help are they in a good position to actually provide?" etc)
What I wanted (needed?) was to be offered specific tasks that I could simply say Yes/No to.
So I came up with a list--a job board, hoping people would pick a job, could pick a task they honestly and genuinely felt they could do, and wanted to do for me.
Text from the above images follows after the break.
Note: In the text below, I put two green stars (**) to indicate the green text from the slides (because making the text green here might reduce contrast and therefore readability). The green text is meant to highlight concrete, actionable things.
Supporting someone through grief
An incomplete list by Charlie, and about Charlie, but hopefully also useful for other people
Background
When my father died, lots of people said, “Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.”
I didn't trust those offers.
And at the time, they felt more like a burden
“Did they actually mean it?”
“What help are they in a good position to actually provide?" and, “What if I ask and then they say no?”
What I wanted needed was to be offered specific tasks, that I could say Yes/No to.
So I came up with a list--a job board, hoping people would pick a job they honestly and genuinely felt they could do, and wanted to do for me.
Generally, here’s how that list went…
Extra context and disclaimer
I was a university student at the time, money was tight.
I was in poor mental health, because recovery after an injury wasn’t going as planned.
I was staying at a friend’s place, eating his food, using his utilities, taking his space. I felt guilty about that.
The friend thought he was my boyfriend.
We were in the middle of a “breakup” and me leaving.
The death and funeral prep interrupted that.
…All this is to say that
People never die when it’s “convenient”, there’s always other stuff going on; and
Please remember that, although I’ve tried to make it more general now, this list was conceived during my extremely specific situation.
1. Feed Me
Provide me meals and/or snacks that require minimal preparation or effort to eat.
Even better if I don’t have to worry about washing, storing, and remembering to return containers.
This lets me not worry about cooking, and the nourishment keeps me useful
(because I still have things to do)
** Ask me, “Can I drop off this casserole [etc] tonight?”
Or even, “Will someone be home when I drop this off tonight?”
2. Do an emotional task
Help me by doing a task that for you might be simple labour or simple information processing, but which is emotionally laborious for me.
** Ask me (or find out) what are some tasks that I have to do. And if they sound emotionally labourious for me but not for you, offer to do that labour because it’s less emotional for you.
(In my case, it was sorting a pile of photos, then scanning them. The photos would be used at the funeral.)
3. Facilitate an emotional task
Help by doing something that makes it easier for me to the emotional task.
(In my case, I had a slow computer and was asking to borrow someone's faster computer, for scanning the aforementioned photos)
4. Take my roommate out
Offer to distract and/or care for my roommate
Give me alone time at home
(I wanted alone time at home, but didn’t know how to ask for it. Even if I did know, I would’ve felt bad asking for it, asking for someone to take my roommate out for a meal that I normally would’ve cooked, or provide the company I felt obligated to provide.)
** Ask me, “Can I take [roommate] out tonight?”, or ask my roommate directly to go out with you.
5. Let me grieve
I am freaked out right now and will probably say or do weird things while I process stuff.
** Be a safe space for me to say or do weird things and process my stuff.
6. ** Reassure me
…that grieving is a legitimate thing to spend time on
(I felt guilty for “wasting” time that I could've instead spent being “productive”, sorting out funereal preparations.)
…that whatever I’m feeling is probably a reasonable thing to feel right now
(I don’t know about “normal”, but knowing that my feelings were a “reasonable” response to events, kinda helped)
7. Continued support
Offer to continue supporting me, then do it.
(I think people had this idea that the One Big Thing I had to do, was funereal preparations and the funeral itself. But actually, there was more afterward, worse afterward. I feared people would only be there up to the funeral, that nobody would help with the other, personal and highly me-specific things that I needed help with.)
** Find out what else I’ve got going on, that I’m no longer in the best shape to handle myself. And after the funeral (or whatever seems like the One Big Thing), offer to help with that.
8. Do an activity with me
Partly this is for distraction.
But largely, your company and this activity are an affirmation of life.
Do a physical activity with me.
** Take me for a walk, a swim, a bike ride, bowling, to the gym, …
Do an activity with me where I can see that I can affect real, physical things—can clearly see the consequences of things I do—and thus be reminded that I’m still alive.
** We can set up dominoes, play Jenga, bake a cake together, do crafting, …

First Reading Galatians 2:1-2,7-14 They recognised the grace that God had given me.
It was not till fourteen years had passed that I went up to Jerusalem again. I went with Barnabas and took Titus with me. I went there as the result of a revelation, and privately I laid before the leading men the Good News as I proclaim it among the pagans; I did so for fear the course I was adopting or had already adopted would not be allowed. On the contrary, they recognised that I had been commissioned to preach the Good News to the uncircumcised just as Peter had been commissioned to preach it to the circumcised. The same person whose action had made Peter the apostle of the circumcised had given me a similar mission to the pagans. So, James, Cephas and John, these leaders, these pillars, shook hands with Barnabas and me as a sign of partnership: we were to go to the pagans and they to the circumcised. The only thing they insisted on was that we should remember to help the poor, as indeed I was anxious to do. When Cephas came to Antioch, however, I opposed him to his face, since he was manifestly in the wrong. His custom had been to eat with the pagans, but after certain friends of James arrived he stopped doing this and kept away from them altogether for fear of the group that insisted on circumcision. The other Jews joined him in this pretence, and even Barnabas felt himself obliged to copy their behaviour. When I saw they were not respecting the true meaning of the Good News, I said to Cephas in front of everyone, ‘In spite of being a Jew, you live like the pagans and not like the Jews, so you have no right to make the pagans copy Jewish ways.’
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 116(117)
R/ Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News.
O praise the Lord, all you nations, acclaim him all you peoples!
R/ Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News.
Strong is his love for us; he is faithful for ever.
R/ Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News.
Gospel Acclamation Psalm 118:34
Alleluia, alleluia! Train me, Lord, to observe your law, to keep it with my heart. Alleluia!
Or: Romans 8:15
Alleluia, alleluia! The spirit you received is the spirit of sons, and it makes us cry out, ‘Abba, Father!’ Alleluia!
Gospel Luke 11:1-4 How to pray.
Once Jesus was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.’ He said to them, ‘Say this when you pray:
‘“Father, may your name be held holy, your kingdom come; give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.”’

First Reading 2 Corinthians 6:4-10 How we prove that we are God's servants.
We prove we are servants of God by great fortitude in times of suffering: in times of hardship and distress; when we are flogged, or sent to prison, or mobbed; labouring, sleepless, starving. We prove we are God’s servants by our purity, knowledge, patience and kindness; by a spirit of holiness, by a love free from affectation; by the word of truth and by the power of God; by being armed with the weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left, prepared for honour or disgrace, for blame or praise; taken for impostors while we are genuine; obscure yet famous; said to be dying and here are we alive; rumoured to be executed before we are sentenced; thought most miserable and yet we are always rejoicing; taken for paupers though we make others rich, for people having nothing though we have everything.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 125(126):1-6
R/ Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage, it seemed like a dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs.
R/ Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
The heathens themselves said: ‘What marvels the Lord worked for them!’ What marvels the Lord worked for us! Indeed we were glad.
R/ Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
Deliver us, O Lord, from our bondage as streams in dry land. Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
R/ Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
They go out, they go out, full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing: they come back, they come back, full of song, carrying their sheaves.
R/ Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
Gospel Acclamation John 8:12
Alleluia, alleluia! I am the light of the world, says the Lord; anyone who follows me will have the light of life. Alleluia!
Gospel Matthew 5:13-16 Your light must shine in the sight of men.
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot by men. ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of men, so that, seeing your good works, they may give the praise to your Father in heaven.’

First Reading 2 Corinthians 4:1-2,5-7 God has shone in our minds to radiate the light of the knowledge of his glory.
Since we have by an act of mercy been entrusted with this work of administration, there is no weakening on our part. On the contrary, we will have none of the reticence of those who are ashamed, no deceitfulness or watering down the word of God; but the way we commend ourselves to every human being with a conscience is by stating the truth openly in the sight of God. For it is not ourselves that we are preaching, but Christ Jesus as the Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. It is the same God that said, ‘Let there be light shining out of darkness’, who has shone in our minds to radiate the light of the knowledge of God’s glory, the glory on the face of Christ. We are only the earthenware jars that hold this treasure, to make it clear that such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 95(96):1-3,7-8,10
R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
O sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord all the earth. O sing to the Lord, bless his name.
R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
Proclaim his help day by day, tell among the nations his glory and his wonders among all the peoples.
R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
Give the Lord, you families of peoples, give the Lord glory and power; give the Lord the glory of his name.
R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
Proclaim to the nations: ‘God is king.’ The world he made firm in its place; he will judge the peoples in fairness.
R/ Proclaim the wonders of the Lord among all the peoples.
Gospel Acclamation Mark 1:17
Alleluia, alleluia! Follow me, says the Lord, and I will make you into fishers of men. Alleluia!
Gospel Luke 5:1-11 They left everything and followed him.
Jesus was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressing round him listening to the word of God, when he caught sight of two boats close to the bank. The fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats – it was Simon’s – and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch.’ ‘Master,’ Simon replied, ‘we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.’ And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear, so they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, they filled the two boats to sinking point. When Simon Peter saw this he fell at the knees of Jesus saying, ‘Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.’ For he and all his companions were completely overcome by the catch they had made; so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. But Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on it is men you will catch.’ Then, bringing their boats back to land, they left everything and followed him.

(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Wednesday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading 1 Corinthians 2:10-16 The Spirit reaches even the depths of God.
The Spirit reaches the depths of everything, even the depths of God. After all, the depths of a man can only be known by his own spirit, not by any other man, and in the same way the depths of God can only be known by the Spirit of God. Now instead of the spirit of the world, we have received the Spirit that comes from God, to teach us to understand the gifts that he has given us. Therefore we teach, not in the way in which philosophy is taught, but in the way that the Spirit teaches us: we teach spiritual things spiritually. An unspiritual person is one who does not accept anything of the Spirit of God: he sees it all as nonsense; it is beyond his understanding because it can only be understood by means of the Spirit. A spiritual man, on the other hand, is able to judge the value of everything, and his own value is not to be judged by other men. As scripture says: Who can know the mind of the Lord, so who can teach him? But we are those who have the mind of Christ.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 144(145):8-14
R/ The Lord is just in all his ways.
The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures.
R/ The Lord is just in all his ways.
All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and your friends shall repeat their blessing. They shall speak of the glory of your reign and declare your might, O God, to make known to men your mighty deeds and the glorious splendour of your reign.
R/ The Lord is just in all his ways.
Yours is an everlasting kingdom; your rule lasts from age to age. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down.
R/ The Lord is just in all his ways.
Gospel Acclamation Hebrews 4:12
Alleluia, alleluia! The word of God is alive and active: it can judge secret emotions and thoughts. Alleluia!
Gospel Matthew 13:47-52 The fishermen collect the good fish and throw away those that are no use.
Jesus said to the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea that brings in a haul of all kinds. When it is full, the fishermen haul it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in a basket and throw away those that are no use. This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the just to throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. ‘Have you understood all this?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom things both new and old.’
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Second Sunrise: a World-Class Clothing Store in Stockholm
Truly High-Quality Garments
My wife and I recently had a couple of days in Stockholm.1 And as someone who loves well-made stuff (especially clothes), I searched for good stores for that. I didn’t find many, but the only one I found beforehand, was well worth it.
Other recommendations:
L'usine Bleue was a really cool little store, with only French workwear.
6/5/4 was also pretty cool.
World-Class
To put it into perspective, I went looking for stores at this level in Now York a couple of years ago — and that city only had two stores on this level: Self Edge and Blue in Green.2 Other stores I know about, are Standard & Strange, Göteborg Manufaktur, Blue Caviar (DK), Brund (DK), Redcast Heritage and Tate & Yoko. But they are really rare — so if you’re close to one, and get to try stuff in-store, you should really go for it.
What’s so special about stores like Second Sunrise?
Usually, when clothes are expensive, it’s due to the brand; You pay more just because the T-shirt says “Supreme”, or whatever. Or, not just: Name-brand stuff typically has a bit higher quality than fast-fashion.3 But the stuff you find at stores like this, is something entirely different. The items are absolutely costly — but not necessarily expensive. They cost what they cost because they are expensive to produce, the materials, construction, and cost of labour in the countries they’re made.
Now, I’m not claiming they aren’t overpriced at all — and it’s hard to say if it’s “worth it”. The items last longer, but does an €80 T-shirt last eight times as long as a €10 one? However, buying one T-shirt instead of eight, is more sustainable — and you’ll end up loving your garments more if you live by Standard & Strange’s motto: “Own fewer, better things.” The items will conform to your body, and you’ll want to repair them when they break.
Some things to look for:
Denim
Jeans like this usually only comes in one length: Long. So it's a good thing that they offer free hemming while you wait!
A good place to start, would be to look at jeans, for instance from Sugar Cane. In this context, they’re on the more affordable side — and they simply make jeans like how Levi’s used to make them.
The thing about denim, like this, is that it’s at its worst while brand new. This is in opposition to jeans that are “pre-worn”4 and stretchy, which might look and feel great in the store. However, after you’ve purchased a regular pair, it’s all downhill — while higher-quality denim only gets more and more comfortable and good-looking. And I absolutely know which trajectory I prefer… But it absolutely makes it a harder sell, when the jeans might not be very comfortable in the store, if you haven’t experienced how nice they become. But personally, I really like it when clothes feel substantial.
This jacket, from Sugar Cane, was totally uniform in colour when I got it — but now it has quite a lot of "fades", as it's called. I really like that they appear where "they should" due to my body movement.
Most of this kind of denim is made in Japan, and on vintage looms that create a cool selvedge line if you cuff them. The denim doesn’t get better because they’re selvedge — but it is a sign of the denim being good.
The jeans on the left are not selvedge, while those on the right are. I think the white line looks handsome!
So, buying high-quality jeans like this, will give you the following:
Jeans that might be stiff in the beginning, but will end up feeling like they were tailor-made for you.
They’ll also look better and better with wear, and will patina really nicely.
You’ll know that they’re made more ethically than most denim.
And they’ll last for a long time, and feel really solid every time you put them on.
Basics
Another good value brand, is Whitesville. They make basics, like T-shirts and sweatshirts, that are really nice. Some of these are loopwheeled, which is another old-timey way to make clothes that is often used for great pieces.
These don’t look that special — but if you feel them, you’ll notice that they’re special. And they’ll stay nice for a long time.
From the Second Sunrise web store. I think I would've purchased this if they had it in my size!
Notebooks
They also stock some really nice stuff from Traveler’s Notebook. Here’s a nice video on them!
But everything in the store is just really nice
… and this includes the service!
They also have some really nice shoes, shirts, and more. If you have the opportunity, and funds, I strongly recommend going to a store like this, and maybe making a purchase. And if you’re like me, you’ll only be able to afford one item.5 But that’s OK, as I think it would be something you’d really love, and can keep on loving for a long time.
A smooth train ride from Oslo. 👌🏻 ↩︎
That was the only stores I found, and they only knew about each other. ↩︎
I want to write more on what things should cost later. ↩︎
/pre-destroyed ↩︎
I’ll write about that later! ↩︎

What CSCS Card Do I Need: Find the Right CSCS Card
According to the CSCS website, over 2 million CSCS cards have been issued since the scheme was introduced in 1995. With such a large number of cardholders, it’s clear that having the right CSCS card is a critical step towards working safely and efficiently in the construction industry.
In this blog post, I’m going to help you find the right CSCS card for your career.
What CSCS Card Do I Need?
There are different types of CSCS cards, each denoted by a unique colour. These cards indicate a particular level of experience, qualification, and skill set. The available colours for CSCS cards are green, red, blue, black, gold, and white.
Green CSCS Card: Also known as a CSCS Labourer Card, the CSCS Green Card is for site labourers who perform basic tasks on a construction site.
Red CSCS Card: This CSCS card is a temporary card mainly used by people who are working towards qualifications relevant to their role. These cards are non-renewable.
Blue CSCS Card (Skilled Worker Card): The CSCS Blue Card, also known as the Skilled Worker Card, is evidence of a person’s competence to perform experienced roles on a construction site.
Gold CSCS Card (Supervisor Card): This card is tailored to cater to the needs of advanced craft and supervisory roles. Achieving the NVQ/SVQ Level 3 for Advanced Craft is mandatory to get a CSCS Gold Card.
Black CSCS Card (Managers Card): The CSCS Black Card is considered to have the highest credibility within the construction industry. To get the CSCS Black Card, you must complete a level 5/6/7 construction-related NVQ. A CSCS Black Card helps you get top management jobs in construction.
White Academically Qualified Person (AQP) CSCS Card: People who have completed construction-related courses – HNDs, HNCs, CIOB and NEBOSH – are eligible for a CSCS White Card. These cards have a validity of five years and can be renewed for a duration of 1 year.
White Professionally Qualified Person (PQP) CSCS Card: The professionally qualified person (PQP) CSCS Card signifies that a cardholder has membership in an approved professional body. Moreover, this card proves that a person has sufficient knowledge and skills to work on a construction site without supervision.
Choosing the Right CSCS Card
Selecting the right CSCS card depends on your job, qualifications, and experience. I’ve put the CSCS cards into three categories based on individuals’ level of knowledge and experience. After looking at these categories, you can decide which CSCS card is right for you.
CSCS Cards for Labouring Roles
If you’re new to the construction industry and work in labouring roles, the CSCS Green Card (also known as an entry-level CSCS card) is ideal for you.
CSCS Card for Skilled Workers
Skilled workers who have completed apprenticeships and NVQ/SVQ qualifications can apply for a CSCS Blue Card. You can also get a Blue CSCS Card without an NVQ. This card helps them get high-skilled roles in the construction industry.
CSCS Cards for Supervisory and Managerial Positions
Supervisors and managers who aspire to serve in supervisory and managerial positions can benefit from a CSCS Gold Card. Applicants must hold a Level 3 NVQ/SVQ qualification to get a gold card.
CSCS Cards for Senior Managers and Professionals
If you’re a senior manager, the CSCS Black Card is the most suitable option for you. You must pass Level 6 or 7 NVQ/SVQ to obtain this card.
Requirements for Getting a CSCS Card
The requirements for obtaining a CSCS can vary depending on the type of card you need. In general, you require the following:
You must get the required training to develop knowledge and skills for your desired CSCS card. For that, you can opt for a relevant course.
Passing the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment Test is mandatory for getting any CSCS card.
You’ll also need relevant qualifications and experience depending on the type of CSCS card you’re applying for. For example, if you’re looking to obtain a CSCS Blue Card, you’ll need to complete an apprenticeship and hold an NVQ/SVQ qualification.
Applying for Your Desired CSCS Card
To apply for a CSCS card, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Go to the CSCS website and click on the “Applying for cards” option. You will need to create an account and provide your basic personal information.
Step 2: You must attach your qualification certificates and a digital passport-style photo. Also, provide information related to your valid CITB health and safety test.
Step 3: Now, you must pay the fee for your desired CSCS card.
How Much Does a CSCS Card Cost?
There is a standard CSCS card cost of £36, in addition to the cost of the CITB test, which is £22.50. Be sure to regularly check the CSCS website or call +447900852621 (9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday to Friday) to stay up-to-date on pricing
Wrapping Up: Which CSCS Card You Need?
Applying for a CSCS card has never been easier, and with the right qualifications and requirements in place, you can take the first step towards a successful career in construction. By following the proper guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and successful application process. Once you receive your CSCS card, you become eligible to work in the construction industry. However, it’s advisable to renew your CSCS card before it expires to avoid having unwanted repercussions.

Bank Of England FINALLY Cuts Base Rates By 0.25% To 5% - Good News For Mortgage Borrowers
After months of dithering, the Bank of England has finally cut the base rate to 5 per cent, the first time the central bank has voted to cut the base rate since 2020.
On seven consecutive occasions the central bank voted to hold rates at 5.25 per cent between August 2023 and June 2024, despite falling inflation. There had been 14 consecutive base rate hikes since December 2021.
The bank’s successive interest rate rises between December 2021 and August 2023 were bad news for borrowers but good news for savers.
The average two-year fixed mortgage rate is now 5.78 per cent, according to Moneyfacts, and the average five-year fix is 5.39 per cent.
Right now, the lowest five-year fix is 3.99 per cent and the lowest two-year fix is 4.42 per cent, but lenders have already started cutting rates, but beware for excessive arrangement fees.
Savers Rates
Say goodbye to great savers deals, including Santander's 5.2 per cent special edition easy-access rate and NS&I's one-year bond paying 6.2 per cent, which launched in September 2023.
One of the best one-year fixed-rate account on the market now pays 5.4 per cent, down from a high of 6.2 per cent in October 2023.
Savers should note that 1,638 savings accounts still beat inflation which is now at the Bank of England's target of 2 per cent, according to the Mail Online.
This means the value of your money is growing in real terms against inflation.
NS&I revealed it will offer a new one-year Guaranteed Growth Bond paying 5.15 per cent or a Guaranteed Income Bond at 5.03 per cent.
The offer is exclusive to existing 6.2 per cent bond holders and will be available when their current one matures, starting from the end of next month.
A saver putting £10,000 in Union Bank of India's one-year fix will earn a guaranteed £554 interest over one year. It comes with full protection under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to £85,000 per person.
Are Buy-to-Let property deals still worth it?
How will Labour’s new Renters Rights Bill 2024 affect buy-to-let landlords?
The Labour Party’s Renters' Rights Bill 2024 is poised to bring significant changes to the UK’s rental market, impacting both tenants and buy-to-let landlords. Understanding these changes is crucial for landlords to navigate the evolving landscape effectively.

fine but dull morning highish wind and F42° at 9 am breakfast in about ¾ hour at 9 5 and then till 11 with A- and Mr. Adam who came to take instructions for Bentleys’ lease of Landymere stone – He is one of the gas-proprietors – Messrs. Rawson, Stocks, Holmes and Holts, and Holdsworth have taken the contract in 4 lots of 600 tons each at 8/. a ton – A- and his fellow proprietors angry – a stormy meeting or believes they would had to pay 8/6 – I said they ought to pay less than 8/. a ton and perhaps with this price the coal-proprietors would be satisfied but they ought not to take less – explained and A- seemed better satisfied – he said well! Holt had said that his pit at the top of the hill cost a thousand pounds – why said I did he not put £500 more to it – and then he has not done yet – perhaps it will cost two thousand or thereabouts before done with – I think it best to tell rightly or not at all – I know what loosing my coal will have cost – I expect it will be £6,000 or more – and if I make £150 per acre I shall be satisfied, deducting 10pc. on outlay – yes! Adam allowed this was only fair – I said my uncle had let at £215 and £225 and I myself at £220 but I should be contented nevertheless to make £150 after all the pother and anxiety I had had – mentioned that I should be obliged to keep horses and cart my own coal to make it pay, and should therefore want a sort of man in the town to take orders – if A- knew of any such person to let me know – wrote the above of today till 11 20 – then out (A- rode off to H-x back to luncheon and in the afternoon rode to Landymere and Cliff hill) with Mr. Gray about till 1 – In taking him to look at the Laundry court he slept and fell and bruised and knocked the skin off the back of his right hand – had Mrs. Oddy to rub it with brandy and tie it up in rag – then sat at luncheon with A- and Mr. Gray till about 2 then out all the afternoon till 6 50 all the day moving and fixing the 2 great sandstone top capstones (that were intended for the home gate posts) and fixing the great oak-bark on post at the near end of the glen bridge – had the 2 masons Joseph Booth and Robert Wharton and Gray the labourer all the day helping to loaden and fix the great capstones and Robert Mann and Jack Green with them – and the blind gin-horse and broad wheeled cart and took my own gray 1st time and George Naylors’ 2nd time as a chain horse the stone so very heavy for fear of knocking the bark off in the cart, had the great oak post carried by 6 six men on [stangs] – the post yesterday took only 2 men to carry it – my own cart and GN-‘s bringing soil from Listerwick to the garden as yesterday and James Mann and William Lord filling as yesterday and Benjamin (Robert M-‘s other man) helping John Booth to cut hay and my own cart and George N-‘s brought home 2 loads the last thing at 7pm – George N- wheelwright and his 2 sawyers here today as yesterday – Amos Ambler and a lad finishing flooring the hay barn 3 masons, Joseph Booth, Robert Wharton, and Amos, and a lad and the labourer Grey have been at it all the week except the time taken off today and yesterday – David Booth went this morning to Rochdale to see the patent high pressure engines of Mr. John [Petrie] iron-founder, Rochdale and got back about before 6 – bringing back a written statement ‘that one pump 6in. bore, lifting water 13 yards, working stroke 3ft. at 20 strokes per minute, will raise 28000 lbs. of water per minute and will require one horse power provided that could be applied direct. but for 2 pumps of the above size etc. should recommend an engine of 4 horse power as one fourth of that power will be lost in working the geering Friction of the pumps etc. – the price of an Engine of 4 horse power with boiler erected at or near Shibden hall complete except brick and stone work for the same and board and Lodging for the men while erecting is one hundred and sixty pounds’ .:. £40 per horse power - £160+ the extras of board and lodging, and all expense of pumps and engine [house] (same expense for chimney in this case as the other) would not be less than from £300 to £400? and I should have 4 instead of 8 horse power and my coal to gin – Better, said I, to Booth stick to the old plan, adding that I was quite satisfied now that I had sent him over – but said I would consider about it – while with B- in the Lodge road Mr. Luke Goodyear came about bit of ground to give and take at Southolm, and about Mr. Pollards’ stone and road thro’ Sun wood – Gave no great encouragement to this latter – promised to go to Southolme tomorrow about 1pm or before – to see Mr. G-‘s underground worked quarry at Hove edge en passant, he to wait there for me – A- had letter on Wednesday night (I think) from Mr. William Gray to say, she was not bound to repair the damage done by the flood to Water lane mill – nor even if it had been burnt down – the tenants liable to the damages – A- told this to Booth yesterday and that she would not do the repairs – SW. to inform the tenants on Saturday – Did not change my pelisse – dinner at 7 5(went into the cellar – 1 sherry) asleep sitting on the sofa while A- and Mr. G- sat talking over plan of alterations at Cliff Hill – coffee at 10 when Mr. G- retired – then read the newspaper and came upstairs at 11 10 at which hour F35° - fine but dull, very cold day – sat writing all but the 1st 16 ½ lines of today and calculating till 12 at night – stood writing in pencil copies of ½ dozen business letters orders relative to the journey next Tuesday

Trouble in paradise - Part 4
Summary: This part takes place 5 months after the blip. Things get difficult when you and Bucky get a guest.
Warning: non; just fluff
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x angel!reader
Author's note: Took me ages to write that. I’m introducing you to two new characters. ;) Thanks again for everyone who is reading my story. English is still not my first languages
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Bucky felt weird, deprived. It has been 5 months since the blip and now everything was different. He wasn’t in Wakanda anymore, reading all those letters you wrote to him.
Steve wasn’t there anymore. He stayed in the past and Bucky knew the reason. Steve loved you so he couldn’t stand to see you happy with Bucky. He fled from the painful reality into a past where you weren’t present.
You and Bucky moved in together one month after the big war. It should have been awkward to move in with someone you barely knew but it wasn’t. Everything with you was easy and harmonic. And Bucky enjoyed the levity.
5 years ago, after the snap, you started to work as a teacher. It didn’t matter that you had no qualifications. The schools were so desperate because of the sudden disappearance of several teachers and you were fantastic. You still work there and to everyone else you and Bucky seemed like a normal couple.
Bucky just finished therapy when he noticed a person with a hoodie who was following him.
He slipped into an empty alley and ambushed for the person to come. Bucky didn’t need to wait long for it.
He attacked the hooded figure pressing it to the wall. A soft squeal left the mouth of the person.
„Who the hell are you and why are you following me?“
„I… I mean no harm.“ The voice of a woman spoke, timidly and softly.
The figure raised both hands to the sides of her hood and pushed it a little bit back, but it was enough for Bucky to be stunned. He could see the (y/h/c) hair shining under the afternoon sun. Her hair reminded Bucky of yours. Glossy, soft and so slick, that the fabric of the hood went slithering down. This girl in front of him looked like you. The same (y/e/c) eyes and the same small nose. Just the lips had another shape-they were slightly thinner. Without doubt, the girl looked like she could have been your sister.
„Who are you?“
„My name is Charlie and I’m here because I really need your help.“
„Why do you think I’ll help you?“
„It’s HYDRA, and angels. They are targeting my family.“
„I don’t believe a single word you say. HYDRA doesn’t exist anymore and why would I even care for your family.“
„Because… I can’t believe I’m telling you this. You are my family. You are my father.“ Bucky let go of the girl like he got burnt.
„I’m not a father. I don’t have a child. You’re completely mad.“
„Yeah, you’re right. You are not a father and you don't have a child yet but one day you will and that kid will be me.“
„So you’re saying you're from the future? You’re out of your mind.“ Bucky started to walk back to the main street, leaving her alone.
„I can prove it.“ Charlie hurried after Bucky.
„When you can’t sleep at night, mum makes you hot chocolate and reads a book to you. And every time I have a nightmare you do the same procedure.“
„That doesn’t prove anything.“
„Two weeks after the blip you bought an engagement ring for mum. You carry it in your pocket and you wait for the perfect day, the perfect moment to ask her. And you told me that one day you woke up and just knew that this particular day would be the one. Here.“ The girl was searching in her bag. She pulled out a picture.
It was an indescribable strange feeling to look at a picture of something that hasn’t happened yet. The picture showed you and Bucky on your wedding day. You both were kissing each other. It was a soft yet freeing kiss. All these years of waiting and longing were put into this kiss. Bucky wasn’t sure if others would interpret the same thing or if this was just his current feelings; still waiting impatiently for the to come. In the background he saw Sam and Pepper and another woman who he hasn’t met yet. The laughed and clapped happily their hands.
Bucky sat down on a bench, that was nearby.
„Am I… am I a good father?“
„Of course you are. You are the best.“ Charlie lay her hand reassuringly on Bucky’s.
„So what’s going on in the future?“
„A lot. It’s pure chaos. The war of the angels isn’t up there anymore. They now live on earth, they are fighting on earth. And they have multiple allies.. HYDRA or SWORD. They are after us. You and mum are desperate and helpless because you both don't know how to protect our family. So mum thought about sending me to Olympia… to Ikaris.“
Bucky snorted. He didn't like the Eternals and especially Ikaris, who was a handsome and powerful man. But it was his arrogance and his closeness to you that made Bucky despise him. Every time Ikaris came to visit you, which happened on a regular basis since the Blip, Bucky felt minor in his presence. Like a loser. Even Sam and Steve didn’t like Ikaris. They met him when he came to warn you about Thanos upcoming arrival. „He’s the Prime Eternal“, you always said to Bucky. „Of course he’s a bit arrogant but he’s also sincere, loyal and fair. I’ve known him for so many years, I’ve stood side by side in his war against Apocalypse. I trust him, and you can trust him too.“
„Wow, even in the past you can’t stand him. Anyway, we didn't make it to Olympia. They knew we were coming, Michael and Rafael were already waiting for us. So you and Mum had no choice but to fight. You gave Capt… I mean Sam the stone and just said 2023 and that I should look for a prophecy? And then Sam and I tried to flee but they were everywhere, so he gave me the stone and suddenly I’m here.“
„What stone?“
„This one.“, Charlie showed Bucky a small green stone.
„That’s an infinity stone! Where did you get this?“
„Don’t ask me! You gave the stone to Sam. I don’t know where you got this. But mum can’t know about this. She thinks, angels shouldn’t time travel, because we could misuse this power. “
„Put that away. If someone sees you with this you’ll be in danger.“
Bucky met Charlie every week this week which didn't get unnoticed by a certain person.
On the first day, it was a coincidence that you were there as well. You just picked Morgan up from Kindergarten. Morgan Stark was the daughter of Tony and Pepper and even thought you never were really close to them, one day changed this. You visited Tony and Pepper and suddenly Pepper went into labour. Complications came up and Pepper had to fight for her and for her baby’s life. But it had been your angel powers that saved both of them. Tony never forgot this and he made you the godmother of Morgan. You hated this name. According to you, no angel should be called a godmother or a godfather.
The first time you saw Bucky and her you didn't really think about it. But you were confused that Bucky didn't mention the woman he met this day and you couldn’t help but to be suspicious.
The next following 3 days you saw Bucky and this woman sitting too closely for your liking on a small bench and talking vividly with each other.
„Is that Bucky?“, Morgan looked at you as she pointed with her small pointing finger in the direction where Bucky was sitting.
„I think you’ll be the next Sherlock Holmes. C’mon, lets say hi to Bucky and his friend“
You were nervous and an uneasy feeling spread in your body.
„Hey, Buck.“, You grinned at him, recognizing how surprised he looked.
„What are you doing here?“
„Picked Morgan up.“ A strange silence grew between the two of you. That's why how you started to observe the woman, that was sitting on the bench. She was truthfully gorgeous. A fact that you didn't appreciated at all.
„Hi, I’m (y/f/n).“ You extended your right hand.
„Hi, I’m uh.. Charlie…“
Her hand was shaking and sweaty like she was nervous and when you touched her hand you felt her powers, her angel and you didn't like it at all. You pressed your lips together and faked a sweet smile. „Nice to meet you.“
You looked away from Charlie and into Bucky’s deep ocean blue eyes.
„So, how do you met each other?“
„Well… we… met… in therapy.“ Bucky stuttered.
You nodded slowly your head. „Are you sure or do you need another minute to come up with a better lie.“, you whispered.
Bucky ignored this and pulled you slightly away from the bench.
„I want to ask you something.“
„Okay?“, Morgan was still sleeping in your arms and you were afraid, that she would wake up from your fast heartbeat.
„I wanted to ask if you’d be okay with Charlie staying with us for some days. She doesn’t have a home and…“ Bucky was scratching his head as he looked unsure.
„Absolutely not.“
„Why not?“
"What did she tell you? What did she tell you to gain your trust, because whatever it was, it was a lie.“ A pause
„Did she tell you that she’s an angel? But she isn’t a normal one, she wasn’t created by Him. She was born, but she isn’t a Nephilim either.“
Bucky looked confused, not knowing what a nephilim is.
„A nephilim is the offspring of an angel and a human. They are half human, half angel and they are really annoying. But she is a real born angel which leads me to the conclusion that one of her parents must have been a really powerful angel… like an archangel. Bucky, I know every archangel and none of them has a child. She can’t be trusted and there is no angel who doesn’t want to see us dead… with all the chaos we provoked.“
You starred into Bucky’s face. No sign of surprise could be seen.
„She told you. You aren’t even surprised. Since when do you trust angels?“ Shocked about his sudden trust, you opened your mouth slightly.
„Well, I trust you, don’t I.“
Bucky regretted this sentence immediately as he saw your hurt in your big (y/e/c) eyes.
„I didn't mean it like that. I just… this girl has no one, no family, no friends. And I feel bad for her. You of all people know how difficult those times are.“
As a teacher you saw how desperate parents and kids could be. You knew that for several families the blip didn't make it any better, if anything it just made it worse.
„Don’t compare her life to those who really suffered, Bucky. She is not innocent. Angels are never innocent… I… Who is this girl? Who are her parents? Did she tell you anything about them?“
„She is scared and helpless. She’s still traumatized and doesn’t talk much“
You snorted.
„We can get her a hotel room for some time but I won’t let her into our home. That’s my final answer.“
You kissed Bucky on his cheek and walked with Morgan on your arms home.
„She will kill you.“ Charlie told Bucky as they both walked upstairs to Bucky’s and yours apartment door. „Probably.“
Charlie lay her hand on Bucky’s underarm which caused him to look into her face.
„Please, don’t get killed. Without you, there is no me.“ Even though she just said it jokingly, a warm and pleasant feeling went through Bucky’s body.
He opened the door and heard you preparing dinner.
„Hey Buck, I hope you aren’t upset…“, You stopped your sentence when you saw who Bucky brought with him.
„Oh for god’s sake. You’ve got to be kidding me.“
„I know you’re angry with me but I couldn’t just let her stay there in the park.“ Bucky tried to calm you down.
„Please, Bucky. Don’t let her into our home. She has more secrets than the Vatican“ You begged him.
„It’s just for a couple of days, yeah?“
You shrugged
„Well, you already made this decision on your own and I have no choice but to accept it.“ Bucky leaned down to kiss you but you turned your head away.
„You’re probably hungry. Sit down, please.“ You offered the girl a seat. Charlie was starving and it had been weeks since she ate a proper meal.
„What about you?“ Bucky asked worriedly.
„I lost my appetite but don’t worry, I won’t die out of starvation.“
You opened the door to a small room. The walls were painted in light blue and small and bigger yellow handprints of you and Morgan could be seen.
„Is it already morning?“ She asked sleepily, rubbing her eyes with her tiny hands.
„No, you just get an upgrade. Go back to sleep.“ You whispered softly as you carried her to your room and left some minutes later with a pillow and a blanket which you put onto the couch.
„Charlie, you can sleep in that room and you“ You turned your head towards Bucky.
„You can sleep there.“ With your head you're nodding to the red, comfortable couch.
„You’re kicking me out of our bed?“ Hurt and disappointment could be heard in Bucky’s voice.
"Did you really think that after everything you’ve done today I want to sleep next you?
Good night.“
Two weeks had passed and Bucky was on edge to the therapist’s sorrow. Charlie was still living with you.
„Trouble in paradise?“ Ikaris saw the blankets on the couch as he entered your apartment. Since the blip the Eternals were at war with the Deviants again. Ikaris used his getaways to meet you, asking for your support in his war.
„Don’t get me started. This woman just infuriates me.“
„Tell me about it.“ Ikaris sat down, watching how you prepare dinner.
„Well… 2 weeks ago Bucky brought this girl home because she’s helpless and innocent.“ The last part of your sentence is full with cutting irony.
„But you don’t believe it?“ Ikaris dug deeper.
„How can I. This girl is an angel.“ You put a glass of water in front of him.
Ikaris eyes widen due to your confession.
„And not just a normal angel… she has a soul... I felt it when I touched her hands.“
Ikaris swallowed the water and snorted.
„How is that even possible?“ He asked when he gained back his control of his breathing.
„I have no idea and I don’t think that this never existed before. That makes her kinda dangerous. And to be honest, I don’t like how close she and Bucky are.“
„So, you see her as a threat of your security or your relationship with James?“
„I don't know. Even though she is powerful she can’t kill me with her powers, but she has Bucky wrapped around her finger with her annoying angel charm. And that will eventually kill me.“
„Maybe she has the same friendship like you had with Steve. You told me, that in the beginning none of the avengers trusted you, except Steve.“
„That was different. I was always honest.“ You said defending yourself.
„But they didn't know that. You are extremely strong, immortal and gorgeous. You had Steve wrapped around finger.“
You crossed your arms, not liking Ikaris’ reasons.
„Here they come“, You mumbled as you heard the apartment door to open.
„Hey, James!“ Ikaris greeted cheekily Bucky
„Ikaris.“ Bucky nodded
„So, where is the wolf in sheep's clothing?“
„Ikaris, I swear I’ll k…“ You were masaging your temples.
Ikaris swallowed again
„Damn woman, you didn't mention that she looks exactly like you. Are you both related?“
„As if, I’m definitely not related to this.“ Your voice was cold, which earned you an annoyed glance from Bucky
„So tell me, where are you from?“ Ikaris looked interested and attentive.
„I don’t know, I can’t remember.“ Charlie's cheeks blushed as she shrugged.
You snorted
„See, I told you. The worst liar on earth.“
„I thought out of all angels you would understand me not remembering my past.“ It was the first time that Charlie really spoke with you and it surprised you as much as it angers you.
„Are you trying to compare your stupidity with me getting my memories burnt out in the most agonizing pain? You do remember, you're just not telling us. That’s a damn difference.“
Tears welled up in Charlie's eyes as she ran into her room.
Bucky looked at you reproachfully and went after Charlie.
„I’ll better go.“ Ikaris stood up.
„What? No, please don't leave me here. At the moment, you are the only sane person here.“
„If I want to eat with this much tension I’ll just eat with my ex-girlfriends.“ He chuckled.
„Talk with him. You both love each other, you will find a solution. And maybe trusting her… just a tiny bit would make her more talkative.“ Ikaris kissed you on the top of your head and left.
Bucky leaned against the kitchen counter, staring at you.
„Why are you so mean to her?“
„No. The question should be: Why are you so nice to her?“
Bucky walked slowly into your direction
„You want to know the truth? She reminds me of you. She’s smart and strong but also extremely vulnerable. And because of that I feel the need to help her, to protect her.“ His voice was deeper than usual.
Moments later Bucky stood before you and put both his big rough hands on the wall on each side of your head. He cornered you against the wall.
„I’ve been deprived of you. Of your kisses, of your touches“ Bucky murmured in your ear, his lips slightly touching earlobe. He could smell your sweet, fruity fragrance that made him dizzy.
„Promise me, that no matter how angry you’re with me, never stop kissing me. I need those. They're keeping sane.“
„I promise“
After hearing this, Bucky pressed his cold lips onto your soft and warm ones. His urgent tongue was invading your mouth, as he was pressing himself closer to you. Your hands were in his brown short hair trying to pull his head even closer to you.
Bucky groaned.
You both tried to catch your breath when you both heard a woman’s voice straight out of the tv.
„Did you know Steve Rogers?“
„… I followed his career very closely as an Avenger. I like to think that I modeled my work after his. I liked that what I was doing would make people feel safe. Steve Rogers was the kind of guy who could do that, he gave me hope. Even though I never met him, he feels like a brother.“
Bucky clenched his jaw, not believing what he sees. You covered your mouth with your hands, shocked to see a new Captain America.

Astrology of Sasuke, Itachi and Naruto: a semi-comprehensive analysis
I’ve been wasting away months of my life on this task and I’m finally reaching relatively passable results. This is the fruit of my labour thus far.
I really tried to be as unbiased as possible and keep several different interpretations of the characters in mind but I can’t guarantee that my personal feelings and opinions didn’t seep through to some extent (specially with regards to that whole genocide thing). I also don’t like some of these characters as “people” so I’ll warn you beforehand, I ended up bad-mouthing Naruto and Itachi a bit.
This post is broken up into four sections.
Section one is a quick run up of the planets (only the ones I’ve been working on), houses and aspects.
Section two is about the signs I’ve chosen for the characters, how I’ve chosen the degrees, and natal aspects.
Section three is focused on degree interpretations.
Finally, we will have a quick look at synastry and composite.
I’ve used equal temperament house system and cross check with placidus though because I don’t have Konoha’s longitude and latitude I’ve used Japan’s ones. Also, in this post we are assuming that Naruto’s planet is earth and their moon (and other planets) functions the same way as ours.
The degree interpretations are supposedly translations of La Volasfera published by Sepharia in 1898 (the translations. La Volasfera is older), Walter Henson’s interpretations and Kozminsky’s interpretation in that order. Keep in mind that they lived in different times and some of the things they say reaaallly reflects that.
For aspect and midpoint calculations, I couldn’t be bothered to calculate everything by hand so I wrote a short program for it; however, I didn’t debug much. It should work fine but just in case something slips by, I’m giving a warning. I also didn’t proof read so please excuse any mistakes.
This is a long post. Any additional comments, opinions, ... are welcome.

Additional notes:
on a full moon sun opposite moon occurs. The moon would be 180-225 degrees away from the sun.
during the last quarter phase, the moon is 270-315 degrees ahead of the sun (Sasuke was born on this phase).
mercury is up to 28 degrees away from the sun and venus is up to 48 degrees away from the sun.
aspect between sun and moon could denote how you perceive the relationships between your father figure and mother figure.
neptune retrograde happens every year when neptune is opposite sun.
plutonian relationships tend to be controlling, obsessive, disrespectful, painful and manipulative but can be transformative and life-changing.
neptunian relationships and about falling for an idealized image and not seeing things for what they are, rose coloured glasses, a feeling of betrayal and disillusionment once those glasses are shattered, forgiving easily, lack of boundaries in both good and bad ways, worshiping someone and putting them on a pedestal and never seeing them for what they are (humans), overlooking vices that shouldn’t be over looked, ...
both neptunian and plutonian relationships can manifest in nice ways but generally they tend to not do that as both people involved would have to be quite “evolved”, mature and level-headed for that among other things.
Section Two: natal signs and aspects
We will start this section with Sasuke, then we will have a look at Itachi and then Naruto. I’ve checked to make sure that it is mathematically possible (though I didn’t get into retrograde cycles much) for the characters to have these placements both on their own and relative to each-other.
I put a picture of each character’s natal aspects and wrote which degree I used. If it is between several possible degrees I wrote it in orange, otherwise, it's green. I didn’t discuss the aspect interpretations much because this post would become far too long if I did. I also used pretty wide orbs because the exact degrees weren’t certain but the overall range was extremely likely.
Sasuke’s planets and house placements:
Ascendant: Capricorn 21-22 or 23-34 degrees
Sun: Leo 0-1 degrees (7th)
Moon: Taurus 22-23 degrees (4th)
Mercury: Leo 12-13 degrees (7th)
Venus: Cancer 15 degrees (6th)
Mars: Scorpio 12 degrees (10th)
Saturn: Cancer 28-29 degrees (7th)
Neptune: Libra 4-5 or 5-6 degrees (8th)
Pluto: Aquarius 10-11, 13-14, 15-16 or 18-19 degrees (1st)
His sun was decided by the author and fits him quite well so there is no need for speculation. Sun in the 7th seems iffy but he does only go for people he respects, deems as reliable/competent and all that (that sun-saturn conjunction in the 7th house) and some of his identity is based on his interpersonal relationships. He also has that passive, non-confrontational way about him where people intrude on his personal space and disregard his boundaries all the time and he really doesn’t react as strongly as one would expect.
There seems to be a common consensus about his Ascendant in the anime astrology community. It is also worth noting that capricorn ascendants are often mistaken as scorpios for some reason. He is driven, comes across as standoffish and serious, has a slight aloof way about him, it puts his mars in the 10th and his moon in the 4th which is perfectly him, ... (I actually considered cancer ascendant for him at first because he had those doe eyes, soft features, youngish face, paler than his brother/father, family oriented, ... but I was torn between that and capricorn and everyone said capricorn so capricorn it is.)
With regards to his moon, as I’ve already mentioned in my previous posts, I saw how Naruto was born on a full-moon and how the relationship between his parents had that masculine-feminine polarization and some other things and decided to put his moon in aries and if we were to calculate Sasuke’s moon with consideration to the moon’s average speed and the time between his birth-date and Naruto’s, we get moon in taurus (3rd decan, in his 4th house), and the degree will be explained in the third section but the house placement is apparent, given that Sasuke’s heart and comfort has always been with family, home and roots (clan). The cancer one also works because, again, heart with family and an innate gentleness and the 6th house can bring a need to be of use and good organization skills and an attention to order, efficiency and good dietary habits which he certainly does posses.
Mercury in Leo is self explanatory. It’s either this or cancer and his style of communication is blunt, straightforward, sarcastic, confident, direct and to the point, dramatic, ... and his learning style matches leo more than cancer.
Venus in cancer is one that I doubted quite a good deal and there isn’t a common consensus about it either. The options are gemini, cancer, leo and virgo. I’ve heard mostly leo and virgo but I personally think Cancer in the 6th house makes more sense than in Virgo in the eight. This is based on his aesthetic sense, my understanding of his values and his love style with the only person whom I’m 100% sure he loves (his brother). He really needed quality time to feel loved, he valued competence (6th house) and family (cancer), he cared about receiving compassion from loved ones more than many of the other characters, he expressed affection mostly through acts of service (6th house), he was verbally expressive and hugged his brother and all that so he wasn’t that distant or somber in his approach to expressing affection in general (cancer), he got sulky when his brother refused to spend time with him and pouted and blushed a lot (cancer), ...
Mars in scorpio is another thing where everyone is of the same opinion and it falling into the 10th house makes it even more fitting as he will be very driven and hyper focused on one thing and he can also spend a very long time not having anything to do with fun or sex or any of that. The 10th house is disciplined, it delays, it makes thing serious and it has much to do with self-restraint. This placement is very action oriented and Sasuke is exactly that (he doesn’t spend time just thinking about doing things or just talking about them, he does them).
Saturn in cancer aspecting both his sun and venus. He was only expressive and affectionate with people he was comfortable with and his relationship with his father and authority figures and his general demeanor practically scream saturn in hard aspect to sun. Misfortune in the home and family life and a rigid upbringing (military parents) which saturn in cancer can bring are also there.
Pluto is a generational planet but I’m convinced that it falls into Sasuke’s first house. He constantly attracts plutonic people, he has a mildly plutonic energy himself and if it’s there, it aspects a ton of his planets which would mean that in his relationships with people of his own generation, he would have a pluto heavy synastry (composite is a different matter).
The aspects didn’t quite turn out how I wanted but they do make sense in my opinion and he has that grand cross with pluto, moon, mars and mercury which is just perfect. His heart, his head, and his drive are all in conflict and there is quite a bit of intensity, issues related to power and control, ... involved.
Itachi’s planets and house placements:
Ascendant: Virgo 20-21 or 26-27 degrees
Sun: Gemini 17-18 degrees (9th)
Moon: Scorpio 20-21, 21-22, 24-25 or 26-27 degrees (3rd)
Mercury: Cancer 6-7 or 11-12 degrees (10th)
Venus: Taurus 6-7 or 8-9 degrees (8th)
Mars: Taurus 1-2, 3-4, 14-15, 16-17, 18-19, 24-25 or 28-29 degrees (8th)
Saturn: Taurus 24-25 degrees (9th)
Neptune: Virgo 23-24 degrees (1st)
Pluto: Aquarius 2-3 (I chose this but It still isn’t concrete enough, the last one also works), 5-6, 7-8 or 10-11 degrees (5th)
Again, his sun is canon and very fitting. Sun in the 9th house of philosophy and all that also fits his interests (this doesn't say anything about his competence).
He is very into that whole “I’ve plan everything” and he talked waaay too much about perfection and all that for him to not have some sort of strong virgo/6th house. His ascendant in virgo puts the house cusps in nice places too. I’ll copy this part from my previous post on the subject.
I considered virgo rising for him (but I’m not particularly attached to this idea) since that would put scorpio as his 3rd house (intense relationship with siblings) capricorn (ruled by saturn which is restrictions and stuff) on his 5th (fun, children and all that), gemini on 10th (can easily change their persona and know by the general public as intelligent), taurus on 9th (likes philosophy and all that, tends to have different beliefs from what he was raised with (likely by family) and can be very stubborn about beliefs and once he finds them, is very unlikely to change them) and some other stuff.
Moon in Scorpio because I calculated and given the distance between his birthdate and Sasuke’s (if they are 5 years apart) his moon would either fall in sagittarius or scorpio and honestly, I think scorpio fits him more.
Mercury in cancer because he’s somewhat verbally non-confrontational (would rather deflect and run away, in his case he does that with lies and that stuff) and passive-aggressive and speaks in a vague way instead of just getting to the point and being clear and concise and he’s good at emotional talk in a sense (although that doesn’t necessarily mean he is comfortable with it).
venus in taurus because when he isn’t busy being genocidal or dishonest, he likes some pretty taurusian things like hanging out at traditional coffee shops and getting some sweets. He’s also aesthetically very close to his root (traditional japanese stuff) in terms of preference and taurus likes the familiar.
I calculated his mars and saturn sign after deciding Sasuke’s mars and saturn. It does match him in a way though. He has a taurusian feel in a way and he really seems to adore the look of security and stability (even when it’s not really there). Venus and mars in 8th because of his fascination and acceptance of the morbid, death and human nature. Also he has an inclination towards extremism in both his actions and adorations (that isn’t the same as being showy though).
Neptune in first because he obviously would have neptune in first. Those acting skills, a habit of dishonesty, being extremely inconsistent and unknowable, weak constitution, slow and lethargic movements, ... He has one of the worst manifestations of neptune in first in my opinion. And he should have more Than one planet in virgo.
Pluto in aqua in 5th solely because of sasuke and calculations, not because of what it says about him (though I also took synastry into account).
Naruto’s planets and house placements:
Ascendant: Leo 1-2, 3-4 or 5-6 degrees
Sun: Libra 17-18 degrees (3rd)
Moon: Aries 12-13, 13-14, 16-17, 17-18 or 20-21 (9th or 10th depending on house system) or taurus 24 or 28 (10th)
Mercury: it’s between virgo (2nd), libra (3rd) and scorpio (4th)
Venus: Libra 23-24 or 26-27 degrees (3rd)
Mars: sag 24-25, 25-26 or 29 degrees (5th)
Saturn: Leo 8-9 degrees (1st)
Neptune: Libra 6-7 or 7-8 degrees (3rd)
Pluto: same as sasuke since pluto is a generational planet and their birthdays aren’t that far apart (7th)
His sun is also canon.
His ascendant in leo makes sense because he was born late at night on the 10th of October and he has that leoish persona. There really isn’t much to say here, he embodies it. He has big movements, flamboyance, an outgoing “sunshine”y demeanour, ego-driven, loves to make everything about himself, ...
Moon in the 10th because his emotional security and self-worth and all that are very tied to what the general public thinks of him and he tries to achieve that through his career. Moon in aries and moon in taurus both fit him and the anime astrology community is also divided on this.
For mercury I have no clue.
His venus could be in virgo, libra, leo, scorpio or sagittarius. I calculated venus in libra from Sasuke’s venus in cancer and then I looked at the degrees and plenty of them fit Naruto and he does have the power of charm so I just left it at that. I eventually narrowed the degrees a bit and found a range I’m comfortable with (in terms of both aspects and degree interpretations).
I used to think his mars makes harsh aspects to both his moon and pluto but it could be just one of them, in the end it ended up being neither of them. I calculated his mars sign from Sasuke’s mars and sag in the 5th seemed pretty fitting specially since his hobby was pranking people and he is a bit of a trickster, his earlier battles also had some creativity. I used to think his mars is in taurus but it didn’t work out. And honestly he talks about working hard more than he actually works so mars in the 10th was kind of off either way.
Saturn was also calculated based on Sasuke but saturn in leo works pretty well. He got reprimanded for his “fun” and he has a lot of self-esteem issues and simultaneously has a bloated ego and a pretty low opinion of himself. He was so insecure that he had no problem taking credit for other peoples work so there is that. Saturn conjunct ascendant can cause people to have a hard time expressing their true self, often receiving criticism for the way they present themselves/the way they are, they can also often feel like no one will every truly love/like them (as people).
Pluto in the 7th house is extremely fitting for him, in fact, I would go so far as to say that I can’t imagine it anywhere else. He’s controlling, he’s manipulative, he’s possessive, obsessive, he’s all about taking what he wants/needs from relationships while not giving an iota of care to what the other party wants or needs, he’s stalkerish, ... he manifests pluto in the 7th house in one of the worst possible ways.
Section Three: degree interpretations
Like the previous section, we will start with Sasuke and make our way to Itachi and then Naruto.
edit: these need to be updated

Section Four: Synastry and composite
Based on the degrees I used for natals, I drew up a composite chart and a synastry chart for sasuke and itachi as well as for sasuke and naruto but I wont be providing interpretations since that would make this post far too long. Note that some of these aspects might be wrong as not all degrees are certain.
Before we get started let me just clarify the difference between synastry and composite.
Synastry is conversations between different parts of people. An example would be if my mercury and your moon are in a nice harmonious aspect, I say something in my style of communication based on my thinking process, now you get what I’m saying at an emotional level because you feel the same way, your feeling process and my thinking process are similar, the way you express your emotions and the way I express my thoughts are close, so I get how you feel on a logical level and you get what I think on an emotional level.
Composite is the overall, combined energy of the relationship. Lets say you have a very rational and to the point way of communicating but then you meet this person and with them, for some reason, as soon as you meet both of you seem to communicate in an emotional, passive-aggressive way (strongly aspected composite mercury in cancer). Or if you have tons of things in common with someone, you communicate in a similar way, you like the same things, but you just can’t seem to think of a single thing to say to them. You meet and your mind goes blank, there should be a world of things to talk about but literally nothing comes to mind, the conversation is dry and an absolute chore and then you look at that composite and there’s a tight saturn (restriction, block) conjunct mercury (communication) and everything makes sense. It also says things like why you got together (composite sun), how people perceive your relationship (composite ascendant), ...
So lets go see how these characters relate to each-other on a cosmic level.
edit: I removed the composite to natals part because they require extremely tight orbs so it’s kind of risky for something so uncertain.
Sasuke-Itachi synastry:
I forgot to erase that sun-sun semi-square (it’s out of orb) so just ignore it. Lots of harmonious saturn could lend itself to commitment and respect, lots of harmonious aspects to sasuke’s venus along with itachi’s sun in his 5th shows how fun and loving this relationship was for him (sasuke). Both their moons are getting lots of close aspects too. Those moon ascendant aspects and quick comfort and easy relating, an immediate emotional connection, Itachi’s mars aspecting Sasuke’s moon, ...
Sasuke-Itachi composite:
So this composite sun (purpose, nature of the relationship) in cancer (family) is perfect. I wonder if this was a coincidence or if Kishi really looked this up. Ascendant in scorpio is pretty nice as well. Plenty of neptune, lots of pluto, ...
Composite sun in the eight very much paints their relationship, intense, obsessive, transformative and full of death (both metaphorical and literal). Composite moon in the third, communication is important to the health of their relationship and emotional security regarding it, ... There is plenty of stuff to unpack here so I’m not going get into it, specially since we don’t know much for certain.
Sasuke-Naruto synastry:
An interesting point here is that naruto’s moon would be in sasuke’s 4th house of family so that explains why he sees his family in him. Also, like I mentioned, plenty of harsh pluto, harsh mars-pluto giving lots of energy which if directed well, can contribute to good teamwork against outside forces and if not will lead to petty yet emotionally volatile arguments and controlling behaviour.
I put the ascendant opposition aspect there even though it’s out of orb because kishi went out of his way to make them opposites in the way they present/carry themselves and their aesthetic so this aspect would probably exist.
Sasuke-Naruto composite:
There are two extremely important personal planets missing here (jupiter and mercury) so the picture isn’t complete but based on what we have, we can tell quite a bit of the story.
Venus conjunct sun is a very good aspect which means the relationship makes the people involved in it feel good, have fun, ... Sun trine moon and venus trine moon are also great aspects to have so that’s nice. Mars trine saturn could make them more organized and better at acting together in a systematic way. Neptune trine mars could mean that they understand each other’s actions and drive (in a physical/tangible sense, not necessarily the reasons behind them) intuitively.
Sun square mars is similar to my previous point, lots of energy which will at best lead to working effectively together against outside forces and at worst will lead to violence, unhealthy rivalry/arguments and constant irritation.
Mars-neptune, not seeing the nature of the relationship properly, delusion, illusion, escapism, an unwillingness to see the relationship for what it is, ... neptune-saturn and lack of proper boundaries.
Ascendant in aries and the rival look, sun in virgo (coworkers, a work relationship), composite sun in the 5th, a fun, dramatic and creative relationship, composite moon in the first, projecting feelings about the relationship all over the place, it just can’t be hidden and the outside world sees you as emotionally tied together, perhaps more so than you actually are unless there are other strong moon aspects to personal planets, ...
One thing that is oddly not here is major pluto aspects, however, if lack of aspects to a planet in a composite chart is similar to a natal chart then it could make that planet’s themes more prominent because the energy has no proper outlet so it pops up everywhere.
Thank you for your time, any input is appreciated :))

Part 4 of Jimercury Kid series
(Contains spanking of a child.)
It was unusual for Jim to allow anyone to accompany him with his gardening, mostly because it was something he held close to his heart, and he did a much better job without having someone else under his feet. But when Khaleel started making a habit of toddling out into the garden to watch him plant flowers or trim the hedges, he didn’t have the heart to shoo him away and instead began tutoring the little boy about the ins-and-outs of gardening, even investing in a little plastic trowel and bucket so Khaleel could practice planting his own flowers.
Of course, the garden still wasn’t 100% safe, despite them childproofing it as much as they could, and Jim made it very clear to his son that he was never to touch any of his gardening tools without permission. The koi pond had also been sectioned off with some rope, after Phoebe caught the little boy leaning vicariously over it to stare at the fish below the surface and had hastily grabbed him before he fell in face first. For the most part, Khaleel had been compliant with the rules concerning the garden. But, as with every toddler, it was only a matter of time before he ended up getting himself into trouble.
Jim had been busy planting a new flower bed when he heard the familiar scurrying footsteps of his son and seconds later, Khaleel’s little arms were wrapped around his leg, big blue-green eyes staring up at him hopefully.
‘Daddy cut flower, please.’ The child babbled, pointing towards the rose bush nearby.
It took Jim a moment to understand the boy’s request; Khaleel was aware of how much Freddie loved his flowers and often made a point of asking Jim to cut him a few of the Eden roses and remove the thorns so he could take them to his Baba. Freddie’s cry of delight always made the child elated.
‘Daddy will cut you some flowers in a minute, sweetheart.’ Jim replied, gently stroking Khaleel’s dark head of hair. ‘I just have a bit more work to do.’
Usually, Khaleel would nod and maybe hang around to watch his father work until he was ready to fulfil his request. But today, his bottom lip stuck out and he let go of Jim’s leg to cross his arms defiantly.
‘Want flowers now.’ He whined, tugging at Jim’s trousers, and pointing desperately to the roses.
‘No, Kenny.’ Jim responded gently, the boy’s nickname rolling off his tongue with great affection. It was Phoebe who had started calling him that and the name had stuck.
But Khaleel refused to relent. He tugged harder, starting to cry until Jim sighed and set his trowel down in the dirt. He was a far more patient man than Freddie was, but that didn’t mean he was about to tolerate a tantrum. He had no problem laying down the law when he needed to.
‘Khaleel Joseph Mercury-Hutton, I said no.’ He spoke firmly down to the little boy, refusing to be moved by the teary eyes. ‘Daddy will cut you some flowers when he’s finished with his work. Until then, why don’t you play with your bucket and spade?’
He had anticipated a screaming fit, but surprisingly, Khaleel let go of his trouser leg and toddled over to the plastic bucket and trowel that were sitting nearby, his fit seemingly forgotten. Relieved, Jim turned back to the patch of earth he had been working on and began scattering the seeds in the tiny, individual holes, before covering them. He turned around to locate his watering can when he was met with a sight that almost made his heart stop.
Khaleel was holding on to Jim’s gardening shears, which he had foolishly left sitting out on the grass in preparation for trimming the hedges after he was done with the flower bed. The little boy was struggling to open them, the blades pointed right towards his face and Jim’s life literally flashed before his eyes as he shot up and tore them out of the toddler’s hands before he took his eye out. Jim’s heart was beating so fast, he could hear it in his ears; once the fear had subsided, it was replaced with an overwhelming rage, and he threw the shears down as he approached his son in a few quick steps.
‘Don’t you ever, ever do that again!’ he roared, grabbing the little boy under his arms; before he even realised what he was doing, he had knelt on the grass, pulled Khaleel over his knee and delivered two swats to the seat of his pants.
He raised his hand to deliver a third swat, but suddenly came to his senses when he heard Khaleel crying loudly, his little hands flying behind him to protect his bottom as he sobbed, ‘no Daddy, please! I’m sorry!’
Jim could hardly process what had happened. He had hit his little boy. Not once, but twice. He felt sick.
He carefully lifted Khaleel off his knee and tried to put his arms around him, but his son immediately sped away towards the house until he disappeared through the conservatory door, sobbing. (1/3)
Jim honestly thought he was going to vomit. He sat down in the grass, head in his hands as his mind replayed the scenario over and over, torturing him. How could he have done it? He and Freddie had always agreed there would be no smacking, none whatsoever. How could he have lost his temper so badly that he’d hurt his own child?
Growing up in Carlow, he and his nine siblings would always receive a good smack when they were naughty. Hell, he’d be lucky if he only got a few swats with the hand – his father preferred to use a slipper or a wooden spoon for punishments. He never resented his parents for their discipline; he always knew they loved him and that’s just how it was back then, especially with such a big family to take care of. There were times when he’d been leathered so hard, he couldn’t sit for days, but he had turned out alright, hadn’t he?
Clearly not, he thought to himself.
No doubt Freddie had had a similar upbringing, as boarding schools were notorious for their rather brutal methods for discipline. But while Jim had convinced himself that such treatment hardened you and made you a stronger person, Freddie believed it caused nothing but pain and fear. It didn’t matter whether it was a tanning with a belt or a soft swat with the hand – striking a child in any kind of fashion was wrong through the Persian’s eyes.
Speak of the Devil, no less than five minutes later Jim heard a door slam and turned to see Freddie storming across the lawn, looking so angry that Jim would have dropped dead right there if looks could kill.
‘What the fuck have you done?’ His husband yelled as soon as he was close, finger prodding aggressively at Jim’s chest. ‘Khaleel came into the lounge crying his eyes out, saying you smacked him!’
Jim had seen Freddie angry before, but in this moment the other man was positively murderous. He held up his hands defensively. ‘He wanted me to cut some flowers for you and got upset when I asked him to wait. So, he grabbed my garden shears, even though I’ve told him never to touch them. I was terrified he was going to hurt himself, so-’
‘So, you hurt him instead?’
The garden fell silent. Jim opened his mouth, then instantly closed it. Freddie was right. There was no way he could defend this, no matter how much his stupid brain tried to justify it.
‘I-it was just a smack, Freddie. It was over his trousers, he probably barely felt it-’
‘That’s not the point!’ Freddie shouted, stamping his foot. ‘Your son is in there scared out of his wits, thinking his father now hates him! We agreed that we’d never hit him, Jim. You promised!’
‘I didn’t hit him, I smacked him.’
‘There’s no difference and you know it!’ Freddie was in tears, fists clenched, face red with anger. ‘I can’t believe you’ve done this! If this is how you plan to treat our child, you can pack your bags and get out right now, and you’ll never see Khaleel again!’
The colour drained out of Jim’s face as he heard those words and for a moment, he thought he might faint. Even Freddie seemed shocked and covered his mouth, as if hoping he could take back what he said. There was a long pause as they took a moment to calm down, their breathing long and laboured.
‘I…I didn’t mean that.’ Freddie eventually stammered. ‘I would never take Khaleel away from you, I swear. But we agreed, Jim. We agreed we’d never smack him, no matter how naughty he is. You promised.’
‘I know…’ Jim was ready to cry himself and he covered his face, ‘I’m so sorry, Freddie. I just… I was so scared, and I lost my temper. But you’re right, there’s no excuse for what I did. Jesus Christ, I’m a monster.’
Freddie reached up and removed Jim’s hands from his eyes, his anger having dissipated. ‘You’re not a monster. You’re a father who loves his son and made a stupid mistake in the heat of the moment. God knows, we’ve all made mistakes, Jim.’
The Irishman looked so miserable that Freddie leaned in and quickly kissed his lips, ‘come on. We should go and have a little chat with Khaleel.’
‘I don’t think I can face him.’ Jim said quietly.
‘Nonsense. He loves you and he’ll forgive you.’ He took Jim’s hand and slowly led him back towards the house. (2/3)
When Jim entered the kitchen, he noticed Khaleel sitting at the table with Phoebe, who had managed to distract him with some raw cookie dough which was the boy’s favourite treat. As soon as he saw Jim, Khaleel’s eyes widened slightly and he shuffled off his chair to go and hide behind Phoebe, breaking Jim’s heart as he looked up at him in fear.
Freddie gave Jim an encouraging glance and Jim squatted down to his knees. ‘Kenny? Kenny, sweetheart, please come here.’
The little boy hesitated, glancing up at Uncle Phoebe for approval, before running over to his daddy and wrapping his arms around his neck, burying his face into the grubby material of Jim’s overalls.
‘Sorry, Daddy.’ Khaleel whimpered, hanging on so tightly it was a miracle he didn’t strangle the man. ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’
Jim bit his lip in an effort not to start bawling like a baby. He held his son close, gently swaying back and forth to soothe him. ‘I’m sorry too, sweetheart. Daddy shouldn’t have done what he did. I’m so, so sorry, Khaleel. I love you so much and I’ll never smack you again. I promise.’
‘I love Daddy.’ Khaleel mumbled back and he actually giggled as Jim started to place kisses on his cheeks, Jim’s moustache tickling his soft, delicate skin.
Freddie watched his two favourite boys with a fond smile as the pair reconciled. Being parent wasn’t easy, but he and Jim were learning every day. (3/3)
(Eh, this wasn’t my best work, and I wasn’t sure how to end it, but I hope you like it anyway.)
--------------------------------------------------
First of all, I hope you're doing well, anon. All my love and hugs to you🧡
Secondly, omg what are you talking about? This is BRILLIANT and my heart I love this fictional little baby so much🥺
Smacking as a punishment is no doubt a sensitive topic, especially in the context of Freddie's life, and I think you dealt with it beautifully. The other day I saw a discussion about Freddie and Jim's possible difference in views regarding smacking, and I loved how you have incorporated that aspect. It feels very real.
And oof, Jim being so heartbroken after smacking his baby, and Freddie's (expected) reaction... my heart. Another tiny detail that I loved was how you made Freddie kind of expel Jim from the house whilst being engaged in a heated argument. We know this happened multiple times, with Freddie realising his mistake sooner or later. It was a nice authentic touch, character wise. But of course, in this series they're parents so he came to his senses pretty early. It's possible that with time, the real life Freddie may have stopped being so rash too, or at least may have pleaded with Jim to come back sooner, lol.
Anyway, I absolutely loved this part. I loved the reconciliation between Jim and Khaleel, and also the fact that the toddler is so comfortable with Phoebe. I mean, of course he would be, but it was nice to see.
Lovely drabble as always, anon. Thank you for writing!
Also, someone sent a prompt for you. If you have the time, they'd really appreciate you writing on it💙

Callisto (Full Prologue)
Prologue Part One - Bit 1 | Bit 2 | Bit 3 | Bit 4 | Bit 5 Part Two - Bit 1 | Bit 2 | Bit 3
When I first started this story, I was of two minds whether to put all of the prologue at the front or scatter it throughout the fic. I started with 700-odd words of it and drove into the body.
It fast became obvious that I really needed to build a lot more into the prologue as the OCs were empty shells and I needed to explain the story behind them and why Jeff is so determined.
So at the end of Part Two, I stopped and went back. This is the result. Nearly 5000 words of Jeff Tracy landing on Mars. It can stand as its own story, but it definitely leads into the planned events for the novel, Callisto. Either way I hope you enjoy it. Be aware that the first 500 words or so may be familiar as they were part of the original version. Don’t worry, the rest is new.
Of course, many, many thanks to @tsarinatorment @scribbles97 and @janetm74 for all the amazing support and help with this fic. Plus @onereyofstarlight my go to science officer on this voyage. You guys are absolutely amazing and I couldn’t have done this without you ::massive group hug::
Now this is done, I can finally go back to writing the novel chronologically. I have to say that this is going to be one hell of a ride.
No warnings needed.

2033
“Another boy?”
Jeff grinned. “Yeah. Another one.” He couldn’t help but stare at the photo that had landed on his screen as a good luck token from Earth.
He did of course, know about Lucille going into labour the night before and it was for that reason he hadn’t had the sleep he probably should have pre-history making Mars landing. But honestly, to get this signal from that little blue planet a good eight months away…his heart swelled…his beautiful baby boy had a shock of red hair that screamed their Irish ancestry down through the hundreds of years since their family had left the old world.
Lucille sat holding him, looking tired but ever so proud. Her dark hair was tied back and the sparkle in her eyes brought a lump into his throat. Her mother, pink hair and all, sat beside his wife holding his two eldest boys on her lap. Scott had his hand on Virgil’s arm as the now second youngest reached over towards his baby brother, a frown of concentration on his face.
“He’s beautiful.”
Jeff startled a little. Berry was breaking regs and leaning over the back of Jeff’s pilot couch, her straps unfastened. The cockpit was pretty snug in the lander, most of the room taken up with safety equipment and interfaces, leaving little for the padded personnel support.
He shot an eyebrow in her direction and she smiled a dare back at him. The astrogeologist wasn’t one for breaking the rules, she just liked to taunt him a little.
Ju, in contrast, was checking her harness was secure a second time. “Creating your own crew, Tracy?” Her auburn eyes smirked at him. “Aiming to replace us?”
He grinned. “Could be.” Dare he mention that his four-year-old eldest could already name all the controls in this cockpit? His grin widened. “But we can’t replace the first person to set foot on Mars, now can we?”
Berry snorted, a little abashed. But it was, after all, her part to play once they made touchdown. The words had been rehearsed, the order of exit decided. For very specific reasons, the first human on Mars was going to be Kate Berrenger.
Berry had worked her ass off to make this mission a reality. Her specialisation onboard was astrogeologist, but honestly it was far more. The woman was talent on legs. It was she who had designed much of the equipment they were deploying on the surface, she who had hunted and gathered the funding, she who had put in the sweat and tears to make this work. And Ju wasn’t far behind. The two of them were quite a powerhouse pair. Jeff considered himself and Lee lucky to have been chosen for this mission. Of course, he’d known Berry for a very long time, worked with her for most of it, but it wasn’t a given that the team that had helped populate the moon would also be the first on Mars.
“Given how many life support pods we’re dragging down there, I bet your boys could drop by in about thirty years or less.”
“You gonna put your money where your mouth is, Berry?” The thought was tantalising. Not to put pressure on any future careers – Lucy would kill him – but he would hope that at least one out of three might follow in his footsteps.
Maybe?
He turned around and opened his mouth, only to be interrupted. “Major Tracy, tell your team to secure. Two minutes to separation.” Sinclair was his usual grumpy, nervous self.
“Roger that, Orbiter Control.”
He glared at Berry and the redhead bit her lip with a smile, green eyes dancing, before sitting back and strapping herself in preparation for the sequence.
She didn’t stop smiling though.
“So watcha gonna name him?” Lee prodded him with his eyebrows from beside Jeff.
A last glance at the photo before he returned to separation prep, fingers tight in his gloves. “Are you going to remember this one?” An eye in the engineer’s direction.
“Sure.”
Running his fingers over the controls, Jeff ran through pre-flight. “Name my eldest.”
Lee grunted, his eyes darting away. “Not important right now.” A flick of a switch. “I’m green across the board.”
“A-ok.” Jeff ran through the last sequence of checks…and ran them again…for luck. “Orbiter Control, we are green for separation.”
“Roger that, Cornerstone. Separation in sixty seconds on my mark.” A breath. “Mark.” Another pause. “Good luck.”
And the countdown began.
Jeff ran his eyes over everything again. The great ship that had journeyed so far from home was preparing to split in half. The lander at the top of the vessel was to pull away from the orbiter and its massive propulsion engines to begin the historic descent to the Martian surface. Eight months in space, so much preparation time and so many sacrifices before that, had all led to this moment.
History in the making.
His eyes combed the readouts watching like a hawk. The computer had control, but computers could only do so much.
Still green across the board.
Quiet, his fingers touched the screen where the photo had been. “John Glenn Tracy.” A breath. “His name is John.”
Displays shifted as the countdown hit zero and machinery grunted. The Cornerstone drifted apart from its propulsion module and floated free far above the red of the Martian surface.
Jeff eyed his instrumentation and sent a prayer to his family back home.
Today was an important day.
-o-o-o-
Lee watched Jeff side-on as he clicked his helmet into place. Taylor was a realist and he knew he wouldn’t be here without the crazy pilot.
It was Jeff’s drive that had gotten them this far. It was like riding a rollercoaster of determination and outright luck. From the Airforce, through space training and their sojourns on Alfie, Lee had tied himself to the man’s coat tails and hadn’t looked back.
God, it had been fun.
Jeff Tracy was a tsunami that crashed through everything and took everyone with him.
And Lee went willingly.
When they had been chosen for this mission it was a dream come true.
The countdown dropped to zero and machinery clunked as the lander separated smoothly from the orbiter. She drifted momentarily before the computer engaged thrusters to push her gently out of orbital alignment.
“We are five by five for atmospheric entry.” The words he uttered were almost rote after so many practise simulations back on Earth.
Atmospheric entry on Mars was considerably different to entry on Earth. Terran atmosphere was more like soup in comparison to the barely-there Martian atmosphere. Still made for a warm entry though, friction was friction after all.
“Trajectory achieved.” Jeff’s voice was confident and firm. As always.
Lee eyed the computer readouts, mentally ticking off procedure as the lander dipped into the outer reaches of the atmosphere and shifted to its entry interface.
Forces wrapped themselves around Lee and his body responded. After so many months of weightlessness, this was going to be a challenge.
“Ready for deceleration burn.”
The landing module sported early entrance stage retro thrusters designed to slow the vehicle to reduce the friction on the spacecraft’s skin. A new innovation that had proven essential in many return trips to the moon in preparation for the creation of a habitable dome on the satellite.
And here they were attempting to do something similar on Mars.
Cornerstone shook as her thrusters engaged exactly on time.
The craft roared.
Lee revelled in it.
“Three minutes to subsonic.”
“I really hate this bit.” It was barely heard above the commotion.
Lee snorted to himself. Ju was an astronaut in every sense, but she had a thing regarding atmospheric entry and the microscopic bits they could be exploded into if something went wrong.
“We are on track, Ju. Not a thing to worry about.” His voice reassurance itself, Jeff could sell the moon cheese if he so felt like it.
“Orbiter to Cornerstone. Tracy, we have a problem.”
Lee blinked. Sinclair’s voice was ominous.
“Orbiter, detail?”
“Cornerstone, weather has kicked up on the landing site. We have a developing dust storm. Looks to be a big one.”
“Orbiter, we are fixed for descent. Please advise severity.” Jeff’s tone was frustrated and Lee couldn’t help but echo it.
Data landed in Lee’s console and while Jeff continued to monitor their descent, Lee examined the situation. “We have a category five dust storm developing over the landing site. Orbiter is right, she looks like she could actually do some damage.”
Mars dust storms were generally all gust and no guts. The air density and pressure forced storms that were dramatic to look at, but generally little more than a windy day on planet Earth. This one, however... “It’s an anomaly.”
Jeff’s eyes darted from his console to Lee’s, grey eyes assessing the data. “Ju, your opinion?” They had to make the decision fast. Altering their trajectory now was possible, but fuel was precious. Any extra used now narrowed their safety margin for later.
The meteorologist’s fingers darted over her board. “Unusual strength, I agree.” Lee glanced in her direction as she frowned. “But Cornerstone should be able to handle it.”
“‘Should’ is not a good enough assumption, Zhang.” Jeff was frowning. The lander’s retros cut out as they reached a safe enough velocity to manoeuvre and Jeff’s hands curled around the yoke.
Lee’s finger darted over his board and brought up the outside cameras.
The red planet stretched out before them, her slightly blue tinted atmosphere contrasting against the rust of her surface.
That surface was churning.
Ju was outraged. “How the hell did that develop in the time it took us to separate from Orbiter? She was as calm as a sleeping baby!”
“I don’t care about then, I need now. Zhang, recommendation!”
The woman grunted. “I say go. If you think you can handle it. It is well within Cornerstone’s specs. Your decision, Major.”
Jeff’s lips thinned, his eyes darting across the readouts. A moment and he hit the comms switch. “Orbiter, we are go for landing. We’ve come this far, might as well go all the way.”
“Tracy, are you sure?”
“Humanity never got anywhere taking it easy.” He glanced at Lee. “Hold onto something.”
Cornerstone began her turn, orientating her nose to the sky so her retros could lower her safely to the Martian surface.
Or in Jeff Tracy terms, ‘spinning so she could park her ass’.
As if reading Lee’s mind, the glint in Jeff’s eyes was something to both be wary of and to celebrate.
Out of the four of them, Jeff was the most reckless, the most daring. But as he was the pilot, it sometimes called for it. Jeff had already saved them from becoming just another crater on Earth’s moon by pulling the most unconventional manoeuvre ever seen on the satellite when a landing thruster misfired on approach. The craft had shot off on a completely unpredicted vector that would have ploughed them into moon dust...if Jeff hadn’t reacted as fast as he did. He flipped the craft with its remaining three thrusters and, shedding the majority of their velocity in an energy dump that had Lee’s stomach on the outside, planted their craft like a sack of potatoes.
They had landed roughly, but they had landed alive and Lee was still amazed his friend had been able to do that.
So, if they were going down in a cloud of red dust, Lee was quite happy to have Jeff at the controls.
Not to say that Lee himself wasn’t handy with a spacecraft. He had his own experience to be proud of. He flew, but his realm was more the mechanical. He was here as back up and maintenance.
For those times the Tracy fix wasn’t quite enough.
A sigh. He eyed the billowing clouds below as they rapidly approached. They were history in the making. Whatever happened here today would be taught in schools for decades to come.
He had faith in Jeff. They would land, Berry would take those first important steps on a new planet, say the rehearsed words, and join Neil Armstrong in the halls of fame.
But first they had to get there.
-o-o-o-
Jeff swallowed as the cloud of dust loomed beneath the lander. Numbers scrolled across his console. The computer should be able to handle most of it. Its programming was solid. Lucy had made sure of it.
The thought of his beautiful wife...little Johnny.
Dust swelled and wrapped around their craft and visibility became...bad.
Cornerstone shuddered.
Mars dust was a bastard of a thing. Ever so fine and carrying a tiny electric charge that on occasion interfered with instruments.
This was one of those occasions.
“We have blackout on three primary sensors.” Damn. Two others flickered, the screen fritzing a moment.
His fingers darted over controls in an attempt to compensate for the data loss.
Lee was muttering beside him and stabbing at his board. “Rerouting to back-ups.”
Their screens flickered and cleared somewhat.
Numbers plummeted.
Beyond the blinding dust the digital readout that marked the surface of the planet approached.
Far too fast.
Retros crucial to start the landing sequence did not fire.
Shit.
It took seconds for him to compensate and move to manual, but that was enough for the craft to fall many more metres so, when he did manually trigger the burn, they were lower than they should be.
Cornerstone roared as he pushed more energy into braking.
“Lee, we need primary thrust or we are so much pancake!” Her four landing thrusters were not slowing them enough. The math in his head was churning out a fatal result and their history-making attempt was fast turning into a shitfest. “I need that power now.”
“You have it.” Short and sharp as Lee’s hands darted over his console.
On Jeff’s board the main thruster icon lit up.
It wasn’t meant to be used this way. The main thruster was for launching. It was far more powerful than they needed to land. But if he didn’t slow Cornerstone, she was going to take on a big red rock and lose.
The computer ran calculations and spat numbers out at him.
“Firing main thruster.” The icon flashed, Cornerstone roared and g-forces wrapped around all of them and squeezed.
No one said anything for the second of burn that slowed their descent ever so rapidly. Everything shook, the ship’s superstructure groaning.
Jeff’s eyes tracked their velocity, counting down as the surface of the planet rushed towards them. Visually they couldn’t see it. Virtually it looked ready to slap them in the face.
But the main thruster compensated, slowing the craft just enough for the landing rockets to do their job.
Jeff killed the big one and concentrated on the landers to take the last of their speed.
Cornerstone slowed. Five hundred metres. Four hundred metres. Three hundred metres. Two hundred metres. One hundred metres. Landing struts deployed. Fifty. Thirty. Twe-
The whole ship slammed to a stop, its structure groaning and tilting for a second before righting itself. Alarms began shrieking, red lights flashing all over his board.
What the hell?!
The readout had them stalled nineteen metres ‘above’ the virtual surface. Virtual was obviously not lining up with actual.
Another metallic groan and the ship tilted slightly again. This time it stayed tilted. No doubt a landing strut had taken the brunt and folded.
One red light screamed at him more than the others.
Beside him, Lee confirmed his fears. “We have a fuel leak.”
Shit!
He was unstrapping himself even as the craft groaned again. Something sparked not far away. Lee was a split second behind, listing the reason for the malfunction. The exterior hull, and the mangled landing strut responsible.
A rupture in the external hull. Hell.
Jeff undocked a diagnostic pad and slapped it on his belt.
Martian gravity made itself known. So many months without its native pull, Jeff’s body protested the sudden movement, but they didn’t have time. Precious fuel was escaping.
He hit the ladder leading out of the cockpit at a run, feet locking around the struts and his hands pushing him down. The whole sensation of gravity, but only a third of Earth’s was baffling. His body caught between expectations and stumbling along the way. Ultimately, he partly fell his way down through the access ports, hands grabbing at the railings barely preventing him from colliding with each deck.
Cornerstone’s fuel tanks were attached to her four landers, with a fifth fueling her main launcher.
It was number three that was the problem.
His boots hit decking and he scrambled for the airlock. Beside him Lee had a toolkit and they both barrelled through the door sealing it behind them.
The pumps cycled and the pressure dropped, their suits shifting with the change, and then the elevator was lowering them to the ground.
As the doors opened, they were faced with a wall of swirling dust.
Jeff did his best to ignore it but it fast became a problem. The maintenance tab in his hand was directing him to climb ladders up the side of the vehicle, but he could barely see the tablet, much less the ladders themselves through the red dust.
“Stick close, Lee. I’d hate to lose you in this.”
“Right behind you, Jeff. Wouldna want to lose you either.”
It was simple, but reassuring nonetheless. Fumbling, he found the landing strut. It was skewed in a way that even in the thick swirling haze, he could see was far from the right angle for correct support.
Hooking a foot into the lowest rung, he snagged his friend and urged him up the ladder ahead. If anyone was going to save their asses in this situation, it was Lee.
If Jeff could land it, chances were Lee could fix it. The man could jimmy two sticks and a rubberband into whatever was needed. Hell, he’d done almost exactly that on the moon at least twice.
This was just another challenge. Jeff had landed them, no matter how roughly. Now Lee would be able to fix it.
Jeff clung to that maxim.
But the question wasn’t about skill, it was more about whether or not they were going to damn well be able to see what they needed to see in order to do what needed doing.
Red obscured everything. The speed it was all flying past spoke to his earth senses of gale force winds, but the pressure on his suit was little more than a windy day.
Not enough to affect the spacecraft.
Mars was obviously educating them early that this was not Earth. Not in any way shape or form.
Their clamber up the strut was partly a blind one, but they made it to the damaged side of the craft. Through a mixture of touch and virtual readout, it became clear that the outer hull had buckled, forcing the inner hull into the fuel tank. Most of it had held, but there was a small microfracture and the pressure differences were bubbling solid state fuel into gas at a rate that, if it didn’t deplete the tank, would likely cause an explosion that would solve all their problems with a history-making finality.
Jeff climbed up beside Lee as he fumbled at his tool kit. The tank was dislodged off its mounts, something they would need to remedy later, but it was still inset from the hull.
Jeff put his body in position to block the main flow of the dust and wind, jamming himself up against the still warm hull of his ship.
A little less dust swirled over the bubbling crack and Lee didn’t hesitate. Before Jeff could blink, gell bondtape landed smoothly over the area, the engineer sealing it with an electronic nudge from a set-wand. The electricity lined molecules up like soldiers and locked them in place bonding them to whatever the tape was adhered to. They had used the same stuff on Alfie two years ago when one of their habitats had tried to make one with the lack of lunar atmosphere.
An extremely simple solution for a very dangerous problem.
His heart, still adrenalin-fueled, refused to believe the danger was over.
As if reading Jeff’s thoughts, Lee smirked at him through the haze. “Never leave home without it.” A sigh as he ran a gloved hand over the seal. “This should hold for the short term. Once we are sure the strut is stabilised, I’ll give it a good going over. Hopefully, we can lose this storm in the process.”
Jeff would have liked to claim it couldn’t blow forever, but both of them knew Mars storms could be unpredictable and last for months if they so chose to.
Lee ran a scanner over the strut’s connection to the launcher. How the hell the engineer could see the readouts, Jeff didn’t know.
For all future excursions to the Red Planet, Jeff was going to recommend helmet based heads-up displays.
“She’s safe for now. A little bent, but she isn’t going to fall over. Hopefully, once we get out some of the heavy lifting equipment we can bend her back into shape if we need to.” Lee stood up. “Hull patching is going to be an ass, though.”
Jeff’s lips thinned and he dropped a hand onto his friend’s shoulder. “One thing at a time. We’ve got this, Lee.”
Lee grunted. “How the hell do you keep spinning the optimism, Jeff?”
A snort. “What? You’d prefer doom and gloom?” He shuffled back towards the ladder. “That’s it, Lee, we’re never leaving this god forsaken rock. Welcome to your new home.” He raised up his hands and as if the gods declared him some kind of Moses for that very moment, the dust clouds parted as if they were a red sea of sand. Sol, so much smaller this far away, poked its weak light through the hazy atmosphere and lit up the bare red rocks of their temporary home. While on one side, the billowing wall of dust storm swirled on its way, on the other red mountains rose up to a weak blue-red sky.
Lee shifted down beside him. “You know, I figured you had an agreement with the gods of physics, but isn’t this a little ridiculous?”
Jeff was too captivated with the view to respond.
Cornerstone was on the plateau they had been simulating for months on end. She stood tall and proud, if a little crooked and pinker than her promo shots.
“We made it.” The words fell from his lips.
Lee clung to the ladder beside him. “Yeah, that we did.”
Sunlight flickered weakly in the atmosphere and a gust of wind dragged more dust across the view.
Jeff shifted. “We better get inside before that mess starts up again. Take advantage of being able to see where we are going.”
Lee didn’t respond immediately, his eyes combing the jagged horizon. “Thanks, Jeff.”
A frown. “For what?”
“Getting us here.”
“It was a group effort, Lee, you know that. Couldn’t have done it without the team. Couldn’t have done it without you. Hell, you just patched a hole that could have blown us up.”
Lee grunted.
“Are you guys going to hang outside all day, or do we have to guess the sitrep?” Berry’s tone was tight.
“Roger, Berrenger. Situation secure. On our way back in.”
It wasn’t until they reached the elevator that he realised exactly what had happened.
And who he was.
By the doors, protected by the shadow of the lowered module was a single footprint that hadn’t been blown away by the wind.
“Aw, hell.”
Lee, as always, stepped up beside him. “Yeah. I guess that makes you the first man to walk on Mars.”
-o-o-o-
Ju was furious. “It was Kate’s right to be the first!”
The vacs in the airlock had sucked everything off their suits to the point Lee was surprised his hair wasn’t standing on end despite the helmet.
As it was, his hackles were somewhere near orbit as they stood in the conference room that doubled as a mess. “And what exactly do you think we were supposed to do? The ship was going to explode.” It was simple to Lee. Sure, he was all for equality, it was a given, but they would’ve been all equally dead if he and Jeff hadn’t done what they did.
“You didn’t give us a chance!”
“I’m the engineer here, Zhang. There wasn’t time! The decision was made and we are alive because of it.”
“Then why weren’t you first, Taylor? Why the hell was Tracy even out there? He’s not the engineer!”
Beside Lee, Jeff straightened. “Standard procedure, Zhang. We work in pairs. If you think I was going to let Lee go out in that on his own, you’ve been serving while wearing a blindfold.”
The short, dark-haired woman stepped up to the Major, her eyes fiery. “It was Kate’s place in history and you stole it!”
Lee flared. “We did what was necessary! This was not a publicity grab, for Christ’s sake! It didn’t even occur to us until we were returning. It was about saving our lives, Zhang. How can you possibly think it was anything else?”
“Because it always is.” She waved a hand at Jeff. “Always the hotshot. Always the first. Always the hero. Do you ever think, Tracy? Do you ever think about those you barrel past?”
Jeff glared down at the meteorologist. “I will not apologise for my achievements, Zhang. This was an honest to god accident.”
“Due to decisions made by you.”
“What the hell, Zhang?!” Lee pushed forward. That was taking it too far.
“We should never have tried to land in that dust storm. We should have waited it out.”
“You said we could take it!”
“But it wasn’t my decision, was it?” Her tone was a positive hiss at Jeff.
“Screw you, Zhang-“
“Taylor!”
“Jeff-“
The man was still the damn tall walking wall when he wanted to be. “Lee, stop.” He glared at Ju. “I will not apologise for my command decisions either, Zhang. What was done, is done.” His stance softened as he turned to Berry.
She had been ominously quiet the entire time.
Jeff sighed. “I’m sorry, Kate.”
The red-haired astrogeologist straightened away from the bulkhead, her arms still folded across her chest. Lee had always liked Berry. She had her head on much straighter than Ju ever did.
Ju was like a terrier with a bone.
The bone variety today was definitely Jeff-flavoured.
But there was only kindness in Berry’s eyes as she looked up at the Major. “This sucks, Jeff, it really does.” She looked down a moment. “But it is what it is and I guess it was what it was meant to be.” A shrug. “I suppose I’ll have to settle for third on Mars. Still pretty momentous, I think.”
“Kate, it doesn’t have to be that way.” Jeff took a step towards her. “It’s not official. It was a stupid repair. We can do the ceremonial step onto the planet anyway. No one has to know.”
Her head tilted to one side. “So, the ship miraculously healed itself?”
“Berry-“
She closed the gap between them, placing a hand on his arm. “Jeff, honestly, it’s not what is important here. You took the first step. We still have plenty of others that need to be taken. My ego can keep.”
Zhang flared again. “Kate, this was for women-“
“Ju, enough. It doesn’t matter! Humans have just landed on Mars, for god’s sake. I would have thought we would be a little less worried about the gender of the person taking the first step and more worried about the fact we did it without blowing up.”
“It was supposed to be you.” Ju wilted in defeat under Berry’s glare.
“Well, it was Jeff, and I think he is no less deserving than any of us.”
Jeff’s voice was quiet. “Are you sure, Kate?” The use of her first name was a rarity for the major, there was a friendship between those two almost as long as the one between Jeff and Lee. Hell, if Jeff hadn’t met Lee’s sister, Lucy, the engineer wondered what might have eventuated in that department.
Not that he had ever had to worry about that. Jeff was a complete sop for Lucy. His sis had the man wrapped around her little finger.
If that made Lee feel just that touch more protective of the crazy pilot, then so be it.
Kate straightened, her shoulders strong. “I’m sure.” Then her lips curled up a little. “Besides, my lines were so much more elegant than ‘Stick close, Lee. I’d hate to lose you in this.’”
Jeff snorted and shrugged. “If I’m going to make history gotta make sure my best friend is with me.”
Zhang made a disgusted sound and stormed out of the room.
Shoulders dropping, Jeff sighed. “Guess I need to work on my phrasing.”
But Lee was too wrapped in the moment, a little too proud and grateful to care. “She’ll live.”
The grunt from Jeff reminded Lee that they still had months to share living quarters with the fiery Ju.
“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to her.” Berry squeezed Jeff’s arm before reaching out to Lee as well. “Thank you, both of you, for getting us down safely. We’re on Mars, guys. Let the party begin.”
The smile in her eyes was honest and ever so heartening.

Never Too Late For A Leap Of Faith
Part 1
(Part 2)
Five times Taichi only feels the presence of Digimons and one time he actually meets them (again).
Words: 2126 Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Tags: 5+1 Pairings: Taichi Yagami/OC, Sorato, Jyoumi
Inspired by this youtube video talking about how the end of Kizuna fits into the narrative of the Epilogue in 02, posted by TheDigiKnow. It’s in my opinion a thorough and yet personal analysis.
When there was a baby’s cry from the labour room, Taichi broke down in tears. He’d been pacing to and fro in the hall leading to it, but only after his wife Kana had dislodged some knuckles in his hand by holding it too tight during a contraction and he had to be treated for it. Afterwards he hadn’t been allowed in again because, and that was something he didn’t like to admit, he had been on the brink of fainting before Kana’s force had jerked him back to consciousness.
A nurse stuck her head out the door and smiled. “Congratulations, Yagami-shi, you have a son!”
Taichi wiped away his tears, smile a little lopsided, and entered the labour room. His wife Kana, whom he had met at a diplomatic meeting three years ago, looked pale and drained, but smiled broadly. She mopped her sweaty brow with a neckerchief, pushed her long black hair that looked a tad greasy after her exertions behind her ear and leaned forward to receive a kiss from Taichi. Then she pulled away the duvet that had been drawn over her to reveal their newborn son. He had chestnut brown hair just like Taichi but his mother’s bulbous nose and when he opened his eyes they were a startling clear blue.
“Most children have blue eyes when they’re born”, the nurse explained. “They’ll darken over the course of the first year.”
Taichi hadn’t said a word yet, he was too transfixed on this small bundle of life that he helped to produce and that he was now responsible for. That realization suddenly felt heavy on his shoulders but when he looked into Kana’s soft yet endearing black eyes, the very eyes he’d been mesmerized by from the very beginning, he felt the weight ease.
“Do you want to hold the little egg?”, Kana asked and lifted the bundle towards Taichi who’d been instinctively forming a cradle with his arms. Something at the back of his mind stirred to life, something about a green yard full of cribs with colourful eggs, the way it never had before when the word “egg” was mentioned, but Taichi didn’t give it any notice. Tears were running down his face again as he watched the miracle before him. With a scratchy voice he whispered “Hello Hotaro, welcome to the world.”
The first days were reserved just for them so the three could get to know each other. After the tiredness of being born had worn off, Hotaro was a very awake child. In every sense. He had trouble sleeping through, which caused Taichi, suddenly becoming self-conscious about his appearance, to use Kana’s concealer. She had taken a year off from work while Taichi went back to the office after three days. His colleagues welcomed him with a round of applause, a light blue greeting card, and a big stuffed and, for some reason, snow white teddy bear. As he looked the bear up and down, suddenly a cold breeze swept over him and gave him goosebumps. He immediately knew how he would name the bear.
“I am Frigimon”, he muttered under his breath.
***
Hotaro loved Frigimon. He had accepted the name without hesitation, affectionately calling him Friggi, and never going to sleep without him. Once Frigimon had entered the Yagami household, something had shifted within Taichi. Usually he was highly alert in his meetings but now he started dreaming away. Dreamt of a tram that didn’t need rails, of an island ruled by an evil bat-like looking creature, and vending machines in the middle of nowhere.
He also started dreaming away at the kitchen table when having dinner with his family. At some point he was so far gone that it needed a gentle slap on the shoulder by his wife. When he looked at her questioningly, she said “Muchomon”.
He tilted his head. “What do you mean?”
“Muchomon was my Digimon partner. He vanished when I was 24 and had just finished my degree.”
“You were a DigiDestined?” Taichi’s eyes went wide as saucers.
She nodded. “It’s been a while but since you brought Frigimon here the memories have boiled up again. You should talk to your friends again, and more than just at their birthdays and about irrelevances. I thought you’d been so close? To be a DigiDestined, and having fought numerous battles, welds together – for life.”
Taichi took a deep breath. He kneaded his hands. He hadn’t wanted all this to happen – to let the contact cool down or even freeze. It had just happened. Because. Because of life, he guessed. At some point work and his little family had become more important than his long-term friends. He didn’t even know how many children Sora and Yamato now had!
He banged his fist on the table.
“Dad!” Hotaro exclaimed frightened. He had never seen his father so agitated. Immediately, Taichi regretted his outburst. He had never wanted to scare his son, become violent around him. And now he had. Because of his own shortcoming. “I’m sorry, Hota”, he quickly said, tearing at his hair. He got up, walked around the table, and lifted his son in the air.
“It’s okay”, the four-year-old said, gently touching his father’s face. “Can you let me down, please?”
Taichi complied, a bit confused.
Hotaro took his hand and led him to his room. “Sit down, Dad. I’ve found something while playing in the attic a few days ago.” He handed him a box which Taichi instantly recognized, and his heart ached. He didn’t need to lift the dusty lid, sprinkled with little fingerprints from his son, to know what was inside. But he did it anyway. Coming to light was a round pair of goggles and a smouldered Digivice. He only noticed he was crying when the first tears hit the Digivice, just like they had done many years ago when Agumon had to say goodbye.
For good.
Or so he had thought. But Digimons were reborn. He had witnessed that many times. Maybe it just hadn’t been the right time until now.
He lifted his head to look straight into his son’s open, curious, beautiful face. When also Kana had been a DigiDestined, then maybe their child should also supposed to be one. Or no, no he shouldn’t. He should choose if he wanted to become one.
They had been thrust into this world without having been asked first. They had had to come to terms all on their when they’d been mere children and the forces who had chosen them had never offered much aid. He wanted this to go differently.
He noticed that Hotaro held up Taichi’s phone. Koushirou’s name was on the display, it was already dialling. “Call him”, Hotaro said. Taichi shook his head. That kid was much smarter than was good for him.
***
“Oh!! It’s soo good to see you all again!”, Mimi exclaimed, as excited as ever.
Taichi had to dial down the volume of his computer as the audio overmodulated. But he smiled, genuinely, because he felt just the same. Before him, the screen was split into five segments, all filled with bright smiling faces.
“Jou, come over, they’re here now!”, Mimi called, her face turned away from the camera. In the background there suddenly was the sound of glass crashing on a tiled floor, followed by a stream of swear words. “Jou, I told you not to swear in front of the kids!” She turned back to the screen. “I’ll be back in a minute.” With that, her segment got empty.
Her friends chuckled. “I see you were cleverer”, Taichi pointed out to Sora and Yamato, who were sitting together in front of the camera and holding their two children on their laps. Their son had inherited Sora’s maroon hair while their daughter was as flaxen-haired as Yamato. They were both visibly bored, wriggling about on their parents’ laps trying to grab office supplies that were clearly not toys in their vicinity.
“I’m not so sure about that”, Yamato remarked, dryly as ever, as he pulled a stapler away from his son’s hands.
“Dad, have you seen my hockey stick?”, someone called in the background of Koushirou’s screen segment.
He sighed. “I thought you put it in the cabinet beside the shoe rack. You know, where it’s supposed to go.”
“I did but it’s not there. And Yui and her mom will be here any minute to pick me up for training.” The voice grew whinier and more urgent.
Koushirou bowed apologetically to his friends. “I just have to help my daughter.”
Meanwhile, Mimi had reappeared, Jou and their two sons in tow. “Hiroshi, Sasuke, say hello to Mom and Dad’s friends.” Mimi nudged them a little forward.
The older one, taking remarkably after Jou with his blueish-black hair and the glasses, hesitated but the younger one, sporting a daring chin-long bob with a middle parting, grinned and brightly said “Hi, I’m Sasuke.”
The DigiDestined greeted him back with a laugh. “Say Sasuke”, Taichi started, “does your mom and you go to the same hairdresser?”
Sasuke looked at him in surprise. “Yeah, but how do you know?”
More friendly laughter.
“My brother’s good at guessing, is all”, Hikari remarked, absentmindedly fastening her hair-clip. She wore her hair the longest it had ever been but subconsciously she itched for a cut. But her daughter always said that she looked so nice with the long hair even though Rika couldn’t stand long hair herself. Hikari had even caught her once as she had cut her middle brown hair with kids’ scissors.
“Oh, I see”, Sasuke said, tilting his head. “But you don’t look like siblings at all.”
“Sasuke!” Jou turned red in second-hand embarrassment. “Sorry, my son can be a bit blunt sometimes.”
“I wonder whom he has that from, Takeru mused, hand held on his chin as if he was pondering a very difficult question.
“I heard you are a writer”, Hiroshi suddenly said, nervously adjusting his glasses.
Takeru’s expression turned smug. “And a pretty successful one at that.”
“Yeah, but Dad thinks you’re exaggerating at times.”
Jou turned even redder. “That’s… that’s not what I’ve been saying!”, he sputtered. “You just sometimes spend a little too much time on one detail.”
“That’s not what you said, Dad!” Hiroshi turned to his father, affronted. “I’m not a liar!”
“Of course not, my dear”, Mimi said soothingly. Then she leaned in closer and whispered “Sometimes adults don’t like the truth very much.” Louder did she say “Why don’t you two go and get your guinea pigs to show our friends, mmh?”
“Oh yeah!” They bounded off out of the frame.
“And where’s your kid?”, Yamato asked his brother.
Takeru shrugged. “At band practice. Don’t know where he got the musical talent from but he certainly has some. And no, Yama, he hasn’t gotten it from you. Because he’s better.”
Yamato dramatically inhaled. “You didn’t say that!”
“I’ve got a round of witnesses who can confirm that I just did.”
“Sorry Takeru, my connection was a bit wobbly for a few seconds. You said something?” Taichi asked suspiciously innocent.
Takeru shook his head. “And you call yourself my friend.”
Before anyone could reply to that, Koushirou plonked himself down on his chair breathlessly. “I’m back!”
“Did you find the hockey stick?”, Sora asked, glad about the diversion. She had already feared that the mood could be slipping.
Koushirou nodded solemnly. “Yes, just in time. And it was actually me who had misplaced it because I had cleaned out the cabinet and didn’t put it back.”
“Tststs, Kou. I hope your daughter doesn’t have to put with too much.”
Koushirou shook his head. “Of course not. Being a single parent isn’t easy but we have a cleaning lady who comes in two days a week and I can bring Koyuki to my parents if need be.”
Yamato muttered something under his breath which earned him a jab in the ribs by Sora. “In this house we don’t judge”, she breathed into his ear, only audible for him.
He reluctantly nodded.
“These are Tom and Jerry”, Hiroshi and Sasuke announced, diverting the tension once again.
Taichi chuckled. “They don’t look like a mouse and a cat to me.”
“We weren’t allowed to have a cat and a mouse”, Sasuke replied.
“You wanted a mouse?” Sora could hardly hide her laughter.
“Unbelievable, right?” Jou seemed to shiver just at the thought of having a tiny and cunning rodent in the apartment. And a slightly dumb but very persistent cat chasing it.
Takeru laughed, too. “Most certainly.” Then he leaned forward. “But have we just come together to get to know your pets or is there a more pressing matter?”

𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐝𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐬 .
1. What does your muse smell like?
(thank you Puffin for already getting me to think about that one!) Marcel is one of those people who easily retain the smell of the soap or shampoo they are using. The ones they have available in Liberio are mostly basic and unscented, but still retain that particular, pleasant, almost homely fragrance of clean, plain soap. Marcel likes to wash in the morning, be it a proper shower or just a basin of cold water; if the Warriors have physical training during the day, he will shower back at the barracks too, so the scent of plain soap is almost inevitable on him. In both verses where he lives up to adulthood, he picks up mechanics, tinkering with clockworks and bikes, motorbikes and cars as a hobby, so there is also a touch of mechanical oil added to the mix.
After transforming back from titan form to human form, Marcel naturally emanates the same smell as his titan and his titan’s steam, especially if he literally just got out and is still regenerating from the process. Isayama has apparently stated that titans smell “like a hot springs town” - hot springs smell mostly like sulfur, which is often described as rotten eggs (yes, delightful). Considering how close to the ground and how much in direct contact the Jaw titan is with its victims, the smell of blood and possibly of viscera is, unfortunately, pretty much inevitable. The Warriors have probably grown insensitive to titan smell considering how much they spend inside their titans, but Marcel very distinctly remembers his brother and his parents flinching the first time he returned from a mission. Since then, he has made it a mandatory ritual to scrub the smell off of him as soon as he returns home from a mission.
2. What do your muse’s hands feel like?
For the most part, his hands are what you would expect of a child trained as a soldier: calloused by exercise and the handling of weapons, but not heavily calloused like you would expect from a manual labourer (farmer, carpenter, etc). They are clearly tried hands, working hands, not those of an academic or strictly an intellectual. Marcel being a playful child always ready to engage in games, scrapes and scratches are also common occurrence as a result. Adult Marcel grows to have hands that are a little larger than would be expected for a man his height; they have a strong feel to them, a solid, firm grip, meant for holding up, supporting, and building. Or at least he hopes so; he has noticed a few people looking uneasy upon sharing a handshake with him, and only then realised that there are times, especially when in a grim mood, that his grip may feel tighter than usual; go from comforting or reassuring to threatening and destructive. Whether or not this unconscious feel and behaviour may be the result of the Jaw’s telltale claws is completely up for speculation.
3. What does your muse usually eat in a day?
Marcel is not a picky eater - living conditions in Liberio are not the easiest to start with, and especially after meeting less fortunate children than he is like Pieck and Bertholdt, he counts his blessings and eats whatever it is the army provides for its Warriors and candidates. Whenever given the choice, however, for instance at home when trade has been good and their parents can afford their boys more options, Marcel will admit to a weakness towards anything made with eggs - scrambled eggs, poached eggs, eggs on toast, you name it. He does not have much of a sweet tooth, but his absolute favourite kind of food is fruit, especially apples and pears. If he can eat fruit once or several times in a day, he is a happy bunny.
4. Does your muse have a good singing voice?
I will admit I have spent way more time than necessary thinking about Marcel’s voice, finally I can put it to use. So there is not much to play around with when it comes to Marcel’s voice because we hear him for literally one episode (plus a flashback to his death when he screams “it’s a titan, get out of the way”) but I’m taking the voice we hear in the anime as his adult voice, rather than his actual voice when he was 11 to 13 (I love Susumu Chiba and the other VAs but those voices are clearly not the voices of children, no matter how hard they try to make them sound young :’) here is an actual 13yo for comparison). I didn’t particularly think of Marcel having a good singing voice until I had a bout of nostalgia and found this live version of Somebody That I Used to Know, and decided that was 100% Marcel’s voice. It has the same somewhat airy quality with a very slight rasp, but he can also give it more body and make it sond fuller (like Marcel’s normal talking voice vs when he shouts). All of this to say - yes, Marcel can have a good singing voice, for literally no other reason than my own personal guilty pleasure of apparently making every single one of my muses adept musicians vjbhfvjb. Although that would probably be more applicable to a modern/reincarnation AU of sorts, since I doubt he gets many opportunities to practice in canon.
5. Does your muse have any bad habits or nervous ticks?
Technically it’s not quite a tic, but past experimentations on his titan and his human body have left Marcel with long-lasting effects that include, among others, twitching, mostly in his hands. Most of the time, he can either suppress it, or hide it by burying his hands in his pockets or crossing them behind his back when the sensation becomes too uncomfortable. His nervosity also manifests through a shaky leg when sitting down and forgetting to keep it under control. As for bad habits, he is the kind of person who constantly forgets where he placed his keys/shoes/clothes/books mostly because he’s too busy remembering where Porco and the other Warrior candidates have placed their own things on their behalf.
6. What does your muse usually look like / wear?
Most of the time, Marcel wears his standard Warrior candidate/Warrior uniform, mandatory armband with the corresponding colour included. When left to make his own choices as a child, he is not too fussy about what to wear, always happy to don something comfortable and relaxed - short-sleeved shirts in the summer, hoodies in winter. In verses where he gets to grow up, he is a little more conservative than his brother, but not enough to stick to buttoned-up shirts ad clean-pressed uniform pieces. His go-to choices in his wardrobe are turtleneck jumpers and hoodies, always worn under his uniform jacket or under a long coat. Should he ever need to opt for something more formal, he will either wear his ceremonial uniform or a three-piece suit. His preferred colours for his clothes err towards the neutral side, greys, muted greens and browns, beige. In a modern verse, his wardrobe would include more colourful pieces and a lot of denim.
7. Is your muse affectionate? How much? How so?
Oh boy, little Marcel is a bundle of affection, and might as well be a human incarnation of a labrador. He is always keen to show his appreciation to the people he loves and certainly never shies away from giving or receiving hugs, hair tousling, leaning on someone or putting his hand(s) on their shoulders. Casual touches are common occurrence as long as he is certain not to overstep other people’s boundaries. If uncertain, or if he knows the other person to be uncomfortable with touch, he will use words or little attentions to make sure they know he likes them.
8. What position does your muse sleep in?
More often than not, he sleeps on the side, with one arm folded under his pillow or under his head, and bundled up in his blankets to the point of almost disappearing under them. He doesn’t toss and turn too much in his sleep, except when subjected to nightmares or night terrors, or even regular but agitated dreams; when that happens, waking up literally trapped in a burrito of blankets has proved to be a problem more than once.
9. Could you hear your muse in the hallway from another room?
That depends on the circumstances. If he is in official military buildings, no - he knows to make himself quiet and beyond reproach in the face of officials or anyone who might question his attitude. In more relaxed settings, he tends to be the discrete and quiet kind, unless of course he is playing or actively chatting with his friends. They are children, children can make noise. If he and his brother are up to mischief? They can be heard from the other side of the entire house.

The True Story Of Maxwell’s Silver Hammer: on the limits of transparency, or why you should stop feeding your quarters into the dopamine slot machine
Gather round children, and I will tell you a tale. This story is a hundred percent true. It occurred sometime in my late twenties, which would have been in 2008 or thereabouts. I had just taken the biggest acid trip of my life, eight tabs, but of fairly weak acid, I’m guessing around 400 micrograms total or close enough. Still, it gave me exactly the experience I was looking for. We went to the beach, and as a good friend of mine used to say: “got gay with nature”. Everything had been building to this point. First we took one tab. Some weeks later: we doubled down and took two.. After another month had passed, we gobbled up a four strip. Eight tabs only seemed logical at this stage. And man…
It was exactly how you imagine acid is going to be when you’re a kid. Everything was beautiful and melting and there were colours I don’t even have the words for. The trees were full of fractals, the ground was a river flowing beneath my feet. The sky was bright green. The sand dunes: a brilliant purple. It was like that cheesy chroma-keying effect they used to use to represent drugs in old movies from the 60’s. I even nearly went blind staring at the sunset like some hokey old LSD urban legend. Getting gay with nature? This was a little more than merely getting high with one of your straight friends and perhaps sucking each others cocks and then never, ever mentioning it again, this was… I wanted to settle down with nature and build a whole new life together, I wanted to get married, buy a house, maybe even adopt a couple of children. Don’t laugh, this isn’t fucking funny. We were in love!
Anyhow, acid, drugs, beautiful uplifting experience yada-yada. The thing is, on acid you tend to get these… ideas. Crazy, completely off-the-wall, gorgeously bent ideas. And I had just had a real doozy of an acid thought. “Why lie? Why don’t I just be exactly who I am all the time? Why not be completely and utterly transparent with everyone?”. Now this is hardly some kind of grand cosmic revelation. I think that in most individuals this would have cumulated in a simple but genuine effort to be more honest with the people around them, or maybe simply faded with the trip, but in me…
So let me preface this with a couple of things about me that will make the following point make more sense: 1) I tend to take ideas and run with them, generally off a cliff 2) I am very good with computers. To the point where I am a professional hacker these days (as in I break into systems for a living), but back then I was only a hopeful amateur.
So in me, the way this idea came out was I decided I was going to publish my entire browser history, online, in real time. Every site I visited would be available for the whole world to see, should they wish to, seconds after I had clicked the link. I won’t bore you with the technical details, they really aren’t that complicated -- and neither are they honestly that interesting -- but suffice to say I built the thing. I named it on a whim after a Beatles song I happened to be listening to at the time: “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”. And then it was done. Every link I visited was put in a database and displayed on a web page. It was in the form of a giant, constantly growing list, newest at the top. For general purposes of convenience, I had colour coded everything. So all social media sites would be say, purple. Wikipedia would be blue. News was green etc.
So one great and terrible thing about LSD is it has a way of teaching you things. This generally happens while you are tripping, or maybe afterwards when you re-integrate the experience. In this case, acid had decided Maxwell’s Silver Hammer was the to be the terrible form my teacher took. And boy howdy, it would certainly teach me some lessons
So I told all my friends about it. And they told their friends. And then word began to spread. And so I embarked on this slightly weird experiment in radical personal transparency, bouncing down the road like a complete asshole with nary a care in the world, full of hope in the promise of the dream, but I was to very quickly to discover it’s limits…
The first limit should have been the most obvious one. Porn. At the end of a hard days labour avoiding working, I liked nothing more than masturbating for a solid three or four hours over the choicest and rarest sweet-meats the internet had to offer, before eventually collapsing on my bed from sheer sexual exhaustion. The thing is… porn is a very personal thing. I mean: what really spins your wheels, what you get off to. At the time, I wasn’t ready to admit to my friends that I still really liked women ok but sometimes when the mood struck me I liked to watch some massively hung black dude plow a white guy around half his size while fantasying that it was really m… Anyhow, porn is a deeply personal thing and can show quite a lot about someone. Besides, what if my Mum was watching… or my female friends? Sweet jesus.
Well, if I was going to be consistent, I could either “rock out with my cock out” as we used to say back in primary school, or I could stop watching porn altogether. And that was the first lesson. Perfect transparency means constantly worrying about how you look because everyone can see everything. It means censoring, not just what you say, but who you are. it wasn’t just about porn of course. Maybe I should browse some wikipedia so I can look a bit more intelligent? What would the chick I had a crush on think if she knew I kept on visiting these horrible gore sites day after day? And so on and so forth, forever.
I had thought it would be liberating, to be free of all secrets. In fact, it was the exact opposite. I wasn’t living a radically transparent life, instead I was an actor, just playing at performing one.
The second revelation came in the form of the colour coding. I could see myself reflected in a sea of purple. It was obvious I had become obsessed with social media, particularly facebook. Constantly refreshing my homepage, hoping for that next sweet lick of dopamine, another little like on my post, a little sliver of ice from the great icicle of validation that would only ever melt away in the heat of the morning sun. I used to be a meth addict, and it’s exactly the same, that is: it’s never enough. You’re a fiend for it. It had revealed something deeply narcissistic and petty about myself that I really did not like. Why was I doing this? What did it matter? Did I really have three hundred “friends”? Of course not. I had the usual amount of people I cared enough about in my life to see on a semi-regular basis, a few close, ten or so I saw fairly often, maybe thirty total counting colleagues and co-workers and assorted demi-friends and vague acquaintances. The whole thing was fucking ridiculous.
The third lesson came only after both of these things had been grating at me for quite a while. After this synthesis, suddenly, I became enlightened. There was a lot more freedom to be had by not being famous or observed. Privacy wasn’t just a haven for the liars and the hypocrites. In fact, privacy enabled you to be most truly yourself. Sure, be honest where it matters, but you don’t need to put your every card down on the table all at once. Seems like a basic enough thing to realise, but I really had to get slapped upside the head pretty hard to see it. There is a power in being invisible.
So I took down the site. Deleted my facebook. Watched all the “black tops white“ gay porn my little bisexual heart desired and, ironically, stopped caring so much what other people thought about me. Don’t get me wrong, I still get that little rush of validation when someone I respect likes my shit, but you gotta pick the individuals who’s opinion you’re gonna care about. The vast majority of most people are either dumb as fuck or completely antithetical to my values. Which isn’t to say I exactly begrudge them, but I’d still much rather avoid getting myself in a public fist fight, metaphorical or otherwise, unless I really really need to. I think in most cases, power doesn’t need to be confronted, it can simply be routed around. You don’t go and deliberately blow your weed smoke right up a cop’s nose, instead, just go get high in the disabled toilets like everybody else. I mean: it’s what they’re there for!
I guess that is the real moral of the story.

World-Class
To put it into perspective, I went looking for stores at this level in Now York a couple of years ago — and that city only had two stores on this level: Self Edge and Blue in Green. 2 Other stores I know about, are Standard & Strange, Göteborg Manufaktur, Blue Caviar (DK), Brund (DK), Redcast Heritage and Tate & Yoko.
So it's a good thing that they offer free hemming!
From the _Second Sunrise_ [web store](https://secondsunrise.se/collections/whitesville/products/whitesville-heavyweight-loop-wheeled-hoodie-green?variant=48664144445767). I think I would've purchased this if they had it in my size!
Notebooks
They also stock some really nice stuff from Traveler’s Notebook.
But everything in the store is just really nice
