Don’t you hate it when you love a design for about a year and then suddenly hate it so you have to completely re-design your characters
I currently don’t have any plans to change Mikeys design and I might update Raphs a little but I’m still unsure. These were the big changes being made

Note
Twenty questions that he has to answer.
How is your sleep schedule like? Don't mess with Theodore's. I annoyed him for a year about it and finally he got it right. Tho I am sure he got it right because of someone else. (Aka you) 😏
What are your friends like? Explain in brief. Treat this like a three marks question.
What is your ideal way to spend weekends? Will you take Theodore to museums or not? Will you stay in and cancel your plans if Theodore doesn't feel like going? Without blaming him?
Do you know your love language? Do you know how to convey it? (You don't have to tell me what it is just say yes or no)
What's your favourite thing about dating my best friend? Treat this like a three marks question too.
What are some things you and him have in common?
Will you give all your chocolates to him if he asks?
What's your favourite movie?
Favourite way to relax?
Will you say sorry after an argument even if it wasn't exactly your fault? I believe that saying sorry doesn't mean that you are wrong it just means that you care enough to keep your ego aside and take accountability.
Do you like Spiderman/Percy Jackson? (Very important question)
Hobbies?
Any new hobbies you want to pick up?
Will you read a book just because it is Theodore's favourite?
Favourite poet, if any?
Will you get Theodore roses?
Will you help/ask whether you can help Theodore with his chores without him having to ask you?
Extroverted or introverted?
Most played song on your playlist?
If you could master any instrument than which one?
That's it. I guess. Hope you have a wonderful day, take care of yourself and him. Also, nice to meet you, I am Eleanor. Theodore is my best friend, I am his casual friend. I am from India. Eleanor is not my real name but that is what you can refer to me, for now. Any queries? Message me. Take care of my best friend for me. Give him hugs from my side. Time to time, lots of hugs. Theodore, give him a handshake from my side. Thank you.
passing the phone to him
Shalom!! Eleanor (can I call you Ellie?  Oo or even Elea ~pronounced Ella??~ if not that’s groovy too)
I’m very excited I’ve heard lots about you! All good don’t worry babes)
I try to sleep about seven hours a night but sometimes I sleep 8 but I couldn’t do anything less unless absolutely necessary I physically could not lose a day of beauty rest of it would ruin me
Friends….all pretty diverse actually and there are several different personalities.. I’ll give you my ride or dies so okay we All went to an alternative school not because we had disciplinary problems but because we had different problems that made normal schools challenging. Like I for example have dyslexia and ADD. Anyway my best friends and I sorta bonded over this and I’ve been friends with Elton since grade five and we still keep in touch even now but he decided to go to college and I did not he’s a literal fashion icon and the sweetest smartest cinnamon roll you could meet but if he’s not doing his work you need to get on him because he procrastinates like crazy. So now we only see each other on weekends. Kaleb on the other hand went overseas and we FaceTime every morning except Sundays because of church and she’s really into anime and I can’t tell you much about that stuff except the seven deadly sins is better than demon slayer and bleach is something Kaleb rewatchs every few weeks so you best expect that it’s going to be playing when you visit but my life really doesn’t have interesting drama thank goodness. (No offence starshine👀)
I love to spend my weekends exploring I used to hike a lot but Arc is not a fan of the outdoors though we’ve found he has a knack for gardening and does very good on the family farm he just really doesn’t see the point and I don’t really blame him I suppose it’s not for everyone and I know Arc is more of a moon person. Yes actually we do go to museums and no I wouldn’t ever get mad at him for that we all have our off days
Yes and yes but ours is not the same so it’s good to keep of communication in our relationship so we stay afloat. We really haven’t had any problems though as words of affirmation is something Arc is good at unknowingly because of his poetry addiction and I’ve always been a really touchy person
My favorite thing about dating Arc is his ability to express himself though body language for example we’re at a party I don’t have a ask in front of everyone if he’s tired from all the human interaction he just shows it with expressions or posture..or whatever he chooses to convey but I never have to ask. This can be a problem on the small occasion that I can’t see him because I cannot rely on him to tell me because I usually know.
We’re people pleasers and that’s one of things we sorta bonded over when we first met we feel horrible égéen if the thing wasn’t our problem or responsibility because it made whoever upset. We don’t have very good people skills I’m overbearing and him not enough which has lead a lot of people to sorta stay away unless of course you’re also like us. I’ve found that we both share an appreciation of art mine is more in fashion design and makeup while his is writing and visual sorta stuff
Without hesitation(I’m not a huge fan of chocolate)
Geek charming (I’m not sorry)
Meditation.
Yes because I will feel bad for making him upset though he’s probably right anyway as he’s more logical than me…but one cannot always choose mind over morals so maybe I might be right on the off occasion
Not really l…sorry..but I think wonder woman is cool if that’s the same fandom?
Crocheting, sewing, working out, and I love to sing but I’m not very good at it despite what Arc says but I do want to get into photography
I would if he asked me but I don’t really read them because he likes to tell me about them and I love hearing about them…he also probably wound be very happy at my reading for him because he knows reading is a struggle for me
Oh this is a good one! Probably the Edgar guy I like when Arc recites them especially Anabel Lee
No because he prefers Aster white aster to be exact..
Of course! Most our chores are mutual so we don’t have it set on who does what but if he’s doing something I’d definitely help him finish whatever it is
Extroverted
Teenage dirtbag by weetus I honestly have no Idea how I’m not tied of it yet and a close second is  in this shirt by the irrépressibles which I listen to while designing
Definitely guitar it’s just so pretty but Theodore might get me into piano he plays like a dream
I do Hope your next three days go spectacularly well and this was really fun I definitely might consider this app or the website at the very least thank you.

Workshop Week (pt. 1): Te Rongo Kirkwood
My first official blog post - how exciting!!!! ^__^
Our first week of the Sustainable Fashion Design degree kicked off with a 'workshop week', featuring a diverse array of activities and guest speakers. In this blog post, I'll focus on our first guest speaker: Te Rongo Kirkwood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Te Rongo Kirkwood, an Auckland-based multi-medium artist, specialises in kiln-formed glass and the integration of art glass with various other materials. Her work is characterized by meticulous craftsmanship and a holistic/spiritual approach. What struck me most about her work was not just its aesthetic beauty, but also the depth of meaning and connection she infuses into each piece.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found myself captivated not only by Te Rongo's artistry but also by the challenges she has overcome to reach her current position. Her passion for her craft and the personal significance it holds for her were truly inspiring. Having the opportunity to learn from such an incredible artist and individual was an honour, and I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to our course.
Te Rongo is of Māori (Wai o Hua, Ngai Tai ki Tamaki, Te Kauwerau a Maki, Ngapuhi, Taranaki), English and Scottish heritage [1] and this is heavily reflected through her works, both physically and spiritually. Kirkwood incorporates a Tikanga Māori worldview into her work by grounding her work in Māori principles such as Whakapapa “(or genealogy), a line of descent from ancestors down to the present day. Whakapapa links people to all other living things, and to the earth and the sky, and it traces the universe back to its origins. Through Whakapapa, Māori trace their ancestry all the way back to the beginnings of the universe. Whakapapa orders both a seen and unseen world, and shapes the Māori world view.” [2]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This interconnectedness of all things serves as the foundation of Kirkwood’s work, inspiring me to explore similar themes in my own designs, despite coming from a different cultural background. Although I am of Pakistani and Afghani descent (and not of Maori descent) there are many shared ideas regarding community, culture and spirituality between our respective cultures that are of great significance to me that I would love to explore in my own work as a designer.
Fashion design, as Te Rongo emphasised, is about storytelling. It's not just about creating beautiful garments, but about conveying deeper meanings and messages through them, and this resonated deeply with me. While I want my work to be aesthetically beautiful, I want its meaning to be what takes precedence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Te Rongo urged us to use our art as a means of communicating something larger than ourselves, prompting us to consider, "What is my service to the world?" Her words left a profound impact on me, shaping my understanding of the role of art and design in society.
I had originally planned for this 1st blog post to be a summary of both of our Guest Speakers from the first day, but as I reflected on my notes for the day and worked on this write-up, it became apparent to me that the richness of the knowledge departed to us by Kirkwood required a post of its own. I genuinely can not think of a better introduction to this course and to my blog than Kirkwood’s guest lecture. Kirkwood instilled in us the importance of being clear, unapologetic and uncompromising when it comes to our values in art, and this is something I plan to carry with me for my entire life and in everything that I do.
Thank you to Te Rongo for taking the time to share her wisdom with us, and to Whitecliffe for facilitating.
Signing off for now, Adam <3

Disco Music: The Rhythm that Made the World Groove
In this blog, we will dive into the golden era of disco music and explore how this genre revolutionized the industry and became an unstoppable cultural force.
Disco music flourished in the 1970s, offering an irresistible combination of catchy rhythms, infectious melodies, and lyrics that invited people to party. This genre was characterized by vibrant orchestral arrangements, the use of synthesizers, and, of course, the iconic "dance floor" where dancers dazzled with their unique moves and styles.
One of the most emblematic moments of disco music was the rise of nightclubs, where music and culture merged into a dazzling spectacle. These places became havens of fun, liberation, and expression, where people from different backgrounds and lifestyles came together to enjoy music and dance all night long. The artists who took center stage during this peak were true icons of disco music, such as the Bee Gees with their unmistakable vocal style and hits like "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever." Donna Summer, known as the "Queen of Disco," captivated the world with her powerful voice and songs like "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls." Another notable artist of the era was KC and The Sunshine Band, known for songs like "That's the Way (I Like It)" and "Get Down Tonight." These artists and many others marked a golden era in disco music history and contributed to its lasting legacy.
Disco music was not only a form of entertainment but also had a significant impact on society. Breaking racial and gender barriers, disco music became an inclusive movement that brought together people from diverse communities. Nightclubs were places where diversity was celebrated, and disco music served as a vehicle to promote equality and respect among individuals.
Furthermore, disco music became a voice for liberation and personal expression. Songs like Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," an anthem of overcoming and empowerment, became an inspiration for those facing adversity. Another example is Patrick Hernandez's "Born to Be Alive," which conveyed a message of living life to the fullest and embracing one's own identity. These songs and many other disco music hits became anthems for those seeking to find their own voice and break free from social constraints.
Fashion was also influenced by disco music. Extravagant outfits, bell-bottom pants, sequins, and bright colors became distinctive elements of the disco style. Nightclubs became true fashion showcases where people displayed their best attire to stand out on the dance floor.
In summary, disco music reached its peak in the 1970s, but its influence has transcended to the present day. The rhythmic and characteristic elements of disco music are still present in many current music genres, and its iconic songs continue to be part of the popular repertoire. Disco music left a mark not only in the music industry but also in society, breaking barriers and celebrating diversity. It is a lasting legacy that reminds us of the power of music to bring people together and convey emotions, which was always its reason for existence.

Iris van Herpen
Before our trip, my roommates and I did a presentation on Iris van Herpen— a Dutch fashion designer— and her extraordinary work. Her interest in fashion was rooted in dance (more specifically, her training in classical ballet) which is apparent in many of her clothing designs, which are clearly intended to be dynamic and graceful. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs was displaying a van Herpen exhibit during the time that we visited. This was certainly one of the highlights of my trip. Seeing van Herpen’s brilliant designs in person was truly mesmerizing. Photos do not do her work justice! Her work is captivating to look at, with all of her designs deviating strongly from typical day-to-day wear. They aren’t necessarily intended for pedestrian use and are closer in structure and appearance to works of art or sculptures. She primarily uses 3D printing to create her clothing, often additionally incorporating other innovative techniques. She describes her own work as: “Ethereal garments that are radically future-facing and exquisitely feminine” (Iris van Herpen). She frequently collaborates with architects, scientists, and artists to incorporate their expertise into her designs. Van Herpen’s work speaks volumes. It communicates her obsession with the natural world as well as her desire to preserve it. Her clothing designs are primarily inspired by a wide range of various natural phenomena. She has created collections inspired by fungi, sea life, hypnosis, crows, astrology, and so much more. The exhibit itself was also expertly constructed, utilizing stunning visual elements to complement van Herpen’s work such as projections, framed artwork, sculptures, lighting, etc. These additional elements of the exhibit not only highlighted the beauty of van Herpen’s work but also helped convey the messages of her different collections. The display was set up so that we could see the progression of her work over time, from her first collection— Chemical Crows (2008)— to her most recent— Architectonics (2023). Each of her collections is imbued with a different message. I would argue that van Herpen’s work carries a distinct language that I haven’t seen in any other type of fashion, perhaps due to the extremely unique nature of her work and inspirations. They are thought-provoking, inspired, and inspiring. They are based on the mundane and yet are too eccentric to be considered so. They are both grounded in reality and otherworldly all at once. Exploring her work in this exhibit was surreal and gave me a whole new appreciation for her craft. Below are photos of some of my favorite works on display. It was so difficult to choose which pictures to include here because all of her designs are spectacular!

3D Final Assignment, Ready Made and the Dada Movement. (4/04/24)
Today (4/02/2024) students are working with the small clay sculpture inspired by your museum assignment.
You have today through Thursday end of class to complete it.
You are coming in today ready to complete the idea from your sketches.
MAKE SURE YOU BRING YOUR SKETCHBOOK TO CLASS TODAY.
These small sculptures will be fired as soon as they are dry and will be taken home before the end of the semester.
At the end of class time today we will discuss the final assignment.
As we move on to the last project of the semester, this class is going to work with the concept of ready made artwork.
I will talk more about this in class this afternoon towards the end of class time.
Make sure you are in attendance and on time.
I have also added some videos on this topic so you can begin to have and idea of what you plan to do.
There are four videos to watch.
Take notes regarding all four videos and make sure you note the name of the artists from the ICA videos.
Watch ALL the videos above.
Some have info regarding ready made art work from MOCA .
The other video, has information on identity and personal narratives from the ICA archives .
Take notes of your understanding of these processes.
Revisit this idea as you research the context of creating such works.
Why and how would a ready made be a suitable platform to convey a message ?
Remember that in sculpture we transform, redirect, restructure three dimensional objects for specific functions and purposes.
There’s a reason as to why this happens at different times.
Why do artists choose to express themselves in this fashion?
Now, Think of your own experience in this world.
How could you combine the idea of a ready made to emphasize the concept of  identity and purpose .
First create some sketches.
Think of materials that you have around you.
What could you use ?
Remember you can destroy and re-assemble objects to fit your needs and message .
How can you unify this idea?
Could it be through maybe color or shape or both?
Finally create a ready made that conveys your idea of identity and purpose in this time. How has Post Pandemic Life changed your perspective of this world?
What have we learned, how did our lives change for the better or worse.
This will be our final sculpture for this class .
Towards the end of class today, we will review this post briefly. Then for Homework , students will work to develop some ideas in their sketchbooks.
I will review your ideas on Thursday at 2:20pm.
Starting tomorrow begin collecting objects for your assignment.
You will have starting Thursday after class of this week through Wednesday of next week to complete the assignment.
You will also give a title to your work and post it in your portfolio with an artist statement.
You will present the work in class on Thursday , 4/11/24.
This will be our Final Critique and Final Day of class.
For this assignment you need to work in class and from home and you must bring the completed work to class next week on Thursday for in person Critique.
You need to show that you have engaged enough time and effort to express your idea .
You must also show your ability to express  excellent craftmanship in the execution of your work.
All work is due on 4/11 at 12:30 pm for a Final Class Critique.
On Wednesday 4/17/24 all classes will submit curated portfolios with artists statements.
Weds (4/17) will be dedicated to submitting Final Curated portfolio.
This applies to all classes, including this one.
I will have an additional post regarding the curated portfolio.
In the curated final portfolio you will be asked to submit pages from your sketchbook.
You will then add one final statement talking about your favorite project done this semester and your reasons for choosing that assignment.
Write a paragraph regarding your understanding of the project along with first idea sketches and submit to your Tumblr by 8 pm Thursday 4/04.
The semester is over and at this time there will be no extensions beyond the time frame given above .
So USE your time wisely!!!!
NOTE
As you assemble objects for your ready made keep in mind the following:
The original function and purpose of an object in essence becomes null when you are creating a ready made.
When we look at Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel below, that wheel is no longer a functional object but rather has transcended to a kinetic circle with lines on a base (the stool).
Tumblr media
The same thing happens with Man Ray’s work below:
Tumblr media
See below, some ready made works from history:
Tumblr media
Marcel Duchamp Fountain
Tumblr media
The original function of the object is nullified.
We no longer can use it as such.
A wheel that does not hold or move anything, an iron that does not iron.
Look at the objects you are thinking of assembling.
Are you keeping their original function?
If you are, invert their purpose so you can engage in the design qualities of the object.
For example , think of it this way:
a cup you can not fill
a stool that sits on something else
a scissor that does not cut but rather functions as chopsticks
See the irony and absurdity in the object and then contemplate the design qualites of the object itself.
Additionally how is color aiding or disrupting the concept?
How can we neutralize distractions and unify the idea?
Does using all the same color, black vs white, any other color,  help focus the attention of the form to create a harmonious interaction between design  and object?
I hope this shifts your thinking as you attempt to begin your work.
Below see some student examples from previous years.
Do not copy ideas come up with your own original concept.

A Comprehensive Manual for Attracting and Retaining Millennials
Tumblr media
The employee population in the United States currently consists of 80 million Millennials, and they are expected to soon become the dominant group. This is because in the next ten years, the Baby Boomer generation, which currently makes up 40 percent of the workforce, will be retiring. Furthermore, this year the Millennial generation (born between 1981–2001) is predicted to outnumber the Baby Boomer generation and become the largest living generation in the country. Therefore, organizations must understand how to attract and retain Millennials effectively.
In the comprehensive guide, The Ultimate Guide to Recruiting and Retaining Millennials, various topics are discussed, including fostering a transparent environment, embracing social responsibility, upholding organizational values, promoting career growth, implementing a successful onboarding process, and other related topics. My insights can be found in chapter 15, which focuses on the concept of launching a virtual suggestion platform.
Introducing a Virtual Feedback Platform
Fortunately, the era of old-fashioned (uncomfortable) suggestion boxes is over. Thanks to technology, we now have easy-to-use online surveys and web platforms that provide greater confidentiality for employees who wish to contribute their thoughts and proposals. This is the concept of a virtual suggestion box.
Tumblr media
Moreover, the generation of Y is known for being born with a mouse as they are highly proficient in technology and tend to demand instant access to information, as well as their thoughts and recommendations.
The previous generation was the first to experience mandatory family meetings and safety regulations, such as wearing bike helmets, using car seats, and following seat belt laws. This conveyed the message that they were valued and special. As a result, they prioritize personal connections and strive to be part of a community in all aspects of their lives, including home, work, and leisure. They may even choose to work with their friends at the same company to have more opportunities to be with their community. Having a say in their community is crucial for Generation Y, as they possess the self-assurance to express their ideas and the technological proficiency to bring them to life. Thus, they now rely on your support to listen to and acknowledge their vision.

Metanoia
Week 1
For the first week I teamed up with my group Amani and Chris and we started talking and putting each of our ideas together to get a rough idea of what we wanted our capstone project to be. Out of class before university started I had brainstormed and envisioned some ideas/ concepts that I started to further and solidify. My initial idea was to create a short film based around the gate between conscience and subconscious, I want to make a film that is filled with surreal but realistic, dreamy, obscure  scenes that use my own music and production to bring them to life and create emotional feelings for those watching. I want to use elements and ideas from music videos and documentary style films that use third person and voiceovers to tell the story in a unique way. Narrative wise I'm thinking of making the story follow a boy who is stuck in a certain predicament in life, working a boring day job, being told what to do and overall living a life “inside a box”. The film with start with live action, real life footage leading to the main character falling into a world of dreamlike scenes and locations that symbolise and hold answers to himself and his identity, slowly reconstructing his ego and teaching him new things about himself he couldn't see in a natural state. Using liminal spaces and ethereal landscapes the main character will go on a journey through his mind and subconscious allowing him to gain new perspective and direction in the outside situation he's in. My goal is to make a aesthetically appealing film that stimulates viewers with dreamy music and visuals but also has a message viewers can take a meaning from.
Films and shows I will be taking inspiration from:
Tron Legacy, Inception, Interstellar, Tokyo ghoul, Bleach
Week 2
In week 2 we further discussed any ideas we came up with and tried to bring them together more and agree on what scenes/shots we wanted in our film. We also discussed what we are trying to convey in our short film in terms of ideas/messages we wanted to portray. I started making mood boards of what I was inspired by and what my vision for the capstone project to look like. I also started brainstorming ideas for music and sound as I'm going to be making a original soundtrack specifically for this film.

I very set on using slight documentary styles in the film, especially subtitles and voiceovers. A good example for what i mean: https://youtu.be/4Dem6n3LIW4
Test concept for salt plains scene
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
decided to start working on one of the scenes we decided on. In blender i made the scene to get a rough idea of what the scene could look like.
Week 3
In week three I started learning how to use unreal engine a bit better so i could create the salt plains scene inside it, i wasn't able to create what i wanted unfortunately and ended up scrapping what i made, although it didn't work out i know what i need to learn and what to look into to make this scene a reality in unreal engine.
I also made a start on another scene we are %100 including in our capstone, inspired from the anime bleach i started modelling buildings and creating a cityscape that had resemblance from the show.

Music
I also made a start on the music for our project, since I'm going to be producing and mixing all the music and sound for our capstone I had to think about what kind of music or sounds we would need or where we would put it. Over the end of year 2022 break i created a few tracks that would be used for our capstone. I also started making news ones and experimenting with sound design and different type of keys and genres/styles.

✨Writing Advice✨ that will clear your skin
Hello, here is some advice for writing that I find helpful. I’m going to write them down in bullet points because if not it will just be a massive wall of text (in typical Ayanna fashion) and nobody wants to see that shit. I also want to say that a lot of this advice is based on my own preferences and biases when it comes to writing, and some of it might not work for you. I think that’s fine. We all have different approaches and styles, one of the best pieces of writing advice I can give is to just fucking do it and see which approach and style you find best. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to being a good writer.
GENERAL STUFF
WRITE FOR YOURSELF AND NO ONE ELSE: I cannot stress this enough when it comes to writing you’re not going to please everyone. I’m sure there are people who don’t like my style of writing, or hate that I tread on the lengthy side, or hate the narrative devices and monologues I use to tell Phillip’s life story or, or, or . . . and guess what? That’s fine, but I don’t really care. What matters is that you’re writing what makes you happy and you’re sending the message you want to send. Yes, you will always be able to improve your writing, but also be confident in your storytelling abilities. Don’t change how you write because someone else is saying that they don’t personally enjoy it! Writing is an art form that is meant to reflect the writer not the dumb bitch talking shit about the writer, so write on your own terms first and foremost.
CONFIDENCE: You might think your writing looks and sounds like shit, but . . . you’re not the worst writer in the world. Being confident is very important when you’re just starting out. If you go into writing feeling like shit and assuming that everyone hates your writing, it will show. So, don’t do that to yourself! All that matters is that you’re giving it your best go. No one starts off flawless, but the more you write the more you’ll improve, and your confidence will grow.
READ: Reading anything is important because it gives you real examples of what good (and bad) writing looks like. Plus, you’ll get lots of inspiration for plot devices, characterizations, prose, and dialogue. Notice other writers’ tricks. Notice their writing style, their character dynamics, and their world-building and try to implement them in your own writing. Think about the elements you like in their writing, ask yourself why you like these things and try it for yourself. Does your favourite author use colour to convey emotion? Play around and try to think of how you can do the same. Do they write complex relationships, unpack those relationships and see what basic elements they’re using. Inspiration is a natural part of the artistic process, be mindful of what you like/dislike in other stories and learn from that.
WRITE: Never force yourself to write, but try to do it every day. Even if it’s just a page about nothing. Practice makes perfect, as they say.
PLOT
WHAT’S THE POINT: Think about the main point you’re telling with your story. Is it a romance story? Is it a story about the importance of friendship? It might sound basic, but it’s through this thought process that you can work out characters, themes and plot lines. I joke that the point of my story is “monarchy bad” but that is what helped me develop a lot of my story, thinking about how the monarchy would negatively impact people.
SOMETHING NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN YOUR STORY: This might seem like a very obvious thing to say, but make sure that your story has a plot to begin with. Things need to happen for there to be a story, right? What I like to do, is establish my characters living their regular lives and then BAM! an inciting incident happens that changes their lives and kicks off the plot. Sometimes this incident is subtle and less apparent. The inciting incident in my current arc is Phyllis getting Phillip into therapy, it might not seem dramatic but it threatens Phillip’s regular lifestyle and his desire to be left alone. It’s a massive change to his daily routine and it forces him into new situations, allowing for the plot to happen. Phyllis forcing him to go into therapy is also what leads to him meeting Jean, hooking up with her, and developing feelings for her, etc., etc., One thing leads to another. Treat storylines like a chain. Everything is connected, one event is linked to the next . . . until they’re not, but more on that later. Another thing I like to do is think of the BIG MOMENT the story has been building to and work backwards, thinking of all the things that need to happen for that moment to happen.
PLAN . . . BUT DON’T: I don’t recommend that you plan out your entire story from start to finish, or at least now down to every little detail. In fact, I plan very little. I think over-planning prevents things from developing naturally. I like to let my characters develop on their own, and I like having spontaneous elements in my story too. Real life isn’t always planned.
RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BRO—SUBVERTED: Don’t follow the three-act rule because that’s how stories are told. Play with these tropes and plot devices, you can play them straight or subvert them or get creative with them. This can help your story feel more unique and subvert reader expectations. That rule where I said one event is linked to another . . . I like to subvert this and throw in an event that comes from nowhere. Now, your character is suddenly in uncharted territory where anything can happen. It’s a great way to raise stakes.
RULE OF THREE: I just said rules are meant to be broken, but this one works like a charm. Set it up. Remind the reader of it. Pay it off. Three is the perfect number to develop something fully. If you noticed, there are three times that Phillip and Jean take notice of each other before they hook up and each time the level of interest they have in each other slightly elevates before they reach the point of no return. Jean doesn’t just drop out of the sky when the narrative calls for her, she’s eased into the story so that it feels natural.
START YOUR STORY AS CLOSE TO THE END AS POSSIBLE: This might sound like strange advice, but you want to be as concise as possible. This might conflict with simblr storytelling a little because, let’s be honest, filler and fluff posts have their own purpose here. However, in general, everything should have a purpose when it comes to your writing. If you’re writing something for your story, ask yourself what the point of it is. Is this chapter developing characters, or is it advancing the plot? If you ask yourself this question and you can’t come up with an answer, cut it out of your story. 8/10 you don’t need it.
CHARACTERS AND DIALOGUE
BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR CHARACTERS: Sometimes rules are made to be broken, but sometimes you need to be consistent in order for your story to make sense. If you have a character who is established to be shy, consider what that would look like. What are the pros and cons of being shy and how can that impact their relationships, motivations, etc. If your character is shy and the conflict revolves around them having to come out of their shell, it can be challenging for you as a writer to come up with a realistic solution. Furthermore, If you have a character who is shy, but they suddenly become very confident when it’s convenient, the reader might get confused, or it might feel like you’re ignoring your character’s flaws to cut corners. I never want to be thinking “that’s not something [INSERT  CHARACTER’S NAME HERE] would do” when reading a story.  However, sometimes you can, in fact, be a little inconsistent in ways that make your story stronger. Maybe Stacey is painfully shy, but she isn’t when she’s around Josh. This can be your way of showing that Stacey and Josh have a very strong relationship, that Josh is the only person Stacey feels like being herself around.
REMEMBER WHERE YOUR CHARACTER COMES FROM: The Warwicks are royals and I think that’s painfully clear when you look at how I make them talk. Sometimes the way they speak is overly-formal, stunted, and disconnected from ordinary speech. Even Phillip, who is far more down-to-earth, is guilty of having these mannerisms in his speech. This is me trying to reflect the fact that they grew up in a cold institution that prioritizes formality, stunting his ability to communicate in a “normal” way. Nicholas Warwick as a teenager and young adult texts with almost flawless grammar. He even uses commas. It’s strange. That’s not how a normal 18-year-old texts, but that’s my point. Nick is not some ordinary teenager, he’s a person obsessed with how he conveys himself and he’s been raised being drilled on the fact that he will someday become a king, a head of state. Of course that stuff is going to bleed into how he interacts with others. Your character’s life experiences have an impact on how they act, speak, and behave. Consider that.
ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES: There’s nothing wrong with having a favourite character in your story (who have one doesn’t, really?) but the term Mary Sue and Author’s Pet exist for a reason and I think these are tropes that you should generally avoid because they undermine the effectiveness of your story. Characters, much like people are flawed, but if you keep shielding them from the consequences of their flaws, it can give the impression that you’re giving this character special treatment. If you have a character who is set up to be a snarky mean girl, show the consequences of them being a snarky mean girl. Have that impact on relationships, how others view them, and their reputation. It gives your story more weight that there are real consequences. Jaqueline is consistently rude to Shelby and as a result, Shelby dislikes Jack, is quick to assume the worst about her and, ultimately, this bites Jack in the ass. However, Jaqueline is also a princess and holds a lot of institutional power, so there are some cases where she can bad-mouth people and generally get away with it. Like everything else there is nuance.
NOT EVERYONE HAS TO BE A MAIN CHARACTER: I think simblr (or at least royal simblr, I don’t read much outside of that) gives the impression that there’s a main character and a few side characters and that’s all your story has to room before it gets convoluted and disconnected. WRONG. One of the hardest parts of Phillip’s story is sticking to one character. I had to edit out several posts because I kept drifting to other characters when PHILLIP is meant to be the focus. However, normally I write stories with several main characters and there are ways to balance things so that everyone is fully developed. If I’m writing a storyline with Nicholas and I reach a point where there’s a natural break in his story or where there’s a short break of time, that is when I’ll go focus on another character and so on. These storylines develop together and allow for foils and contrasting with my characters. Also, everything is still connected and what’s happening with Nick will most likely impact the other members of his family. These are ways to equal balance things that are consistent so everyone gets some limelight. Phillip is the main character but as his story gets resolved I then move on to focus on his children, who were impacted by him and so on. Also, don’t be scared to include secondary and tertiary characters too! Even if a character appears once and then fucks off they can be well developed and impactful on your story. Life is full of people who you don’t see often but are nevertheless impactful. Certain characters have lives outside of the main story and showing that can make your world feel more dynamic.
DO RESEARCH: If you’re going to be writing about any social issues or anything like that, you probably should do research to make sure that you’re not writing anything incentive. For example, if you’re writing a character of colour (shocking, those exist) or a character that has a certain illness, you should do your homework to make sure that you’re being accurate with your portrayals. It might seem trivial, but your story has the ability to impact other people so please be responsible with it!
CONCLUSION
I hope someone found this helpful. Like I said before there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to being a writer, and it’s okay if some of these tips don’t work for you. This isn’t the tip of the iceberg when it comes to advise and I could probably write full posts about each of these points. But for now, I’m all typed out. Maybe I’ll do another one in a few months or something. Cheers.

Stray Kids Are Breaking Records, Breaking Eardrums and Breaking Limits (INTERVIEW)
Tumblr media
A Stray Kids track a day keeps the stress away. Though one can argue the K-pop group's energetic brand of "noise music" could possibly heighten tension, their bass-bumping, get-the-crowd-jumping songs are encouraging, vital points to Stray Kids' calling: to be the voices of their generation.
As showcased on their fiery 2019 hip-pop hit "MIROH," or 2020's heavy-hitting "God's Menu," Stray Kids — often abbreviated as SKZ — are unrelenting in their journey of self-expression and their determination to push themselves, and their fans, to their full potential. A prime example? Their second studio album, NOEASY, released Aug. 23.
youtube
Source: Pop Crush
The 14-track project, the majority of which was produced by sub-unit 3RACHA (Bang Chan, Changbin and Han), exhibits Stray Kids' ability to bring the noise no matter the tempo. NOEASY starts off strong with five in-your-face tracks that blend EDM and hip-hop elements (lead single "Thunderous," "Cheese," supporting single "Domino," "The View" and "SSICK"), while the later part of the album experiments with different genres and styles, from jazz-pop to rock.
Just three years into their career — they formed in 2018 — members Bang Chan, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, HAN, Felix, Seungmin and I.N. already carry dozens of award nominations and wins under their belt, and boast chart-topping hits in both physical and digital sales. Even before the release of their second album, the group already set a new record by becoming the first artist under JYP Entertainment to reach 1 million pre-orders.
We recently caught up with the members to talk about NOEASY, the adorable SKZOO version of "Thunderous" and why touring is their first and foremost priority.
youtube
Congratulations on your second album! A studio album takes lots of work, so how does it feel to have this out there in the world now?
Changbin: We really put our everything into preparing this album and we're really confident in it, so I’m really happy that STAY can finally listen to it!
Lee Know: We couldn’t wait to put this out because there are so many really, really good songs on it, so it feels great to finally release this album.
Hyunjin: Somehow a year has already passed, and we’re so thankful to our STAY who have waited for us. The entire album is good, so we hope STAY really enjoy it.
NOEASY has already achieved the title of being the best-selling album in JYP Entertainment in history. Any thoughts on that? What other records would you guys like to break?
Bang Chan: That title was achievable all thanks to STAY! If it weren't for STAY, we wouldn’t have been able to have even gotten this far. Stray Kids are known as “the kids that enjoy breaking things." We break objects, break eardrums and break limits, so breaking another record wouldn’t be so bad. Of course, we’ll need the help from STAY!
I.N: I hope we grow even more with the next album, so much so that people will describe us as artists who are constantly improving.
What were your first impressions of the title track?
HAN: When we listened to the final product, it made me really happy that the track sounded really fresh, the lyrics were very witty and full of spirit and it clearly embodied Stray Kids’ distinct color. I wanted to hurry and work on the performance and share the song with someone!
Felix: The song is really unique and I believe that we were the only team to make it impactful.
Seungmin: One day, upon arriving at home, 3RACHA immediately played the song for me. The moment I heard it, it felt electrifying, and I really wanted it to be a title track. That’s why I voiced a lot of my opinion, too.
3RACHA (Bang Chan, Changbin and Han), you guys have made a name for yourself and were heavily involved in this second album just like past releases. What was it like with this project?
Bang Chan: Just like any other project that we’ve worked on, we just had fun. We experimented with a lot of different styles and tried our best to widen our musical spectrum.
Changbin: We knew there would be a lot of expectations as this would be a full album, so we really put a lot of effort into the process.
HAN: The process was a lot of fun. We’d ask ourselves, “What should we attempt? What should we try next?” And we looked forward to what we’d come up with while working on this album.
How was it different this time?
Bang Chan: The “let’s just have fun” part hasn’t changed at all, but the biggest difference would be the genres of music and the ways we recorded the songs.
Changbin: Perhaps because our second full album is the first album we’re releasing after [television competition] Kingdom, there was a bit of pressure to meet people’s expectations. When pondering what everyone would be expecting of us, we thought they’d definitely be looking forward to something new in true Stray Kids’ fashion. I think that’s the part that we contemplated a lot.
HAN: I think, compared to before, we had a little more fun while working on this album. There was no time crunch, and we worked with the thought of making music that best fits who we are today, so I think the end result came out really well.
What would you say were the key highlights for the album?
Bang Chan: One thing that I hope people will notice is the improvement of all the members’ recording skills. We put a lot of effort into all the songs.
Changbin: The album includes unit songs in which all of our members took part during the creative process.
HAN: I hope people look forward to Stray Kids’ distinct musical color, our wit and how much we’ve matured.
When you guys came up with NOEASY as the title, how did you define it in your own terms?
Bang Chan: This might sound cheesy, but life itself is pretty “no easy." Everyone goes through obstacles, everyone has their own downs and lows, but I feel like it depends on how “noisy” you’re going to be to overcome those hardships.
HAN: NOEASY is trying to convey that things may be hard, but we’re going to break through that difficulty with our sound! I think the best way to explain it is that even if things are tough, as long as we have the sound of Stray Kids and the sound of STAY, we can overcome anything.
youtube
You spoiled your fans with so much pre-release content, which would you say were your favorites and why?
Lee Know: The SKZOO teaser was the most memorable. I would say the cuteness amidst the power was the key point.
Hyunjin: The trailer video was a little embarrassing to film, but after seeing it all come together, it looked so cool that I hope we get to do it again next time!
Seungmin: We worked on unit songs that were included on this album, and the Song Camp teaser videos that showed the creative process behind those unit songs were really good! I think our STAY really enjoyed them, so I hope we can do that type of content again.
About the SKZOO version of the “Thunderous” video: Whose idea was it?
Felix: As we prepared for our comeback, we wanted to impress and entertain our fans with something fun and unique, so we all came to one conclusion which was wearing our costumes for “Thunderous."
Your music has become incredibly encouraging and has touched many STAY around the world. What would you say is your ultimate message as Stray Kids?
Bang Chan: At one point in their lives, people will have a moment where they feel astray from the road that they’ve chosen, and I would like those people to know that they’re not the only ones that feel that way. So, whenever you need someone to keep you company, just know that Stray Kids are here to get you back on track.
You guys pretty much owned 2020 with hit after hit, including “God’s Menu” and “Back Door." How has it been working and releasing music in the midst of the pandemic?
Changbin: There was a lot more time being spent at home, but I didn’t want to waste that time, and instead used it to consistently work on new music. I hope people listen to our songs and gain strength during this challenging time.
Seungmin: To be honest, I was really bummed we couldn’t get to meet our STAY in person, but I think we promoted our album hoping that STAY could feel our love through videos, our music and their hearts even from afar. I’m grateful because I think our sincerity was relayed despite not being able to see each other in person. We spent our time working really hard even in the unseen!
When the pandemic is over and everything’s okay, what’s the first thing you want to do?
Bang Chan: World tour, first priority!
Lee Know: The very first thing I want to do is have a fan meeting with STAY.
Changbin: Definitely an in-person concert.
Hyunjin: I want to go on a world tour to hurry and meet our STAY all over the world and experience new cultures in different countries! I also want to perform for our STAY in-person at Korean music shows.
HAN: A concert! I want to hurry and have a concert so we can vibe with STAY and sing together in the same place. I miss this so much and can’t wait until we can do this again.
Felix: World tour!
Seungmin: I would say the first that comes to mind is a concert with STAY where we can finally greet them and have fun together!
I.N: I want to do a world tour.
Congratulations on your third anniversary! Do you guys have any wishes, individually or as a group?
Bang Chan: Individually, I just wish for everyone to be safe and happy. As a team, I wish that we can reach places that haven’t been reached before with the help from STAY.
Lee Know: I really want to be able to let STAY experience our performances visually and physically in real life as soon as possible.

Tumblr media
The World Unknown to Matsuko aired April 6th.
Music that ended up evolving A LOT in the age of social media Special: "The World of Visual-kei bands"
(I'll be just doing the main points of the program)
They start with introducing Fujitani Chiaki (藤谷千明) who's been following v-kei world as a fan and a column writer for 25 years now ('a former Self Defense Force member who came to love over 100 bands in 25 years').
The slogan on the screen that accompanies this is 'The great pick up of ultimate bands starting from legends to evolving styles (kei)'.
Chiaki's life changed after she saw LUNA SEA's "ROSIER" in junior high. When she was 18 Kuroyume announced they're stopping activities and shocked she decided to enter Jieitai (but it was also because there were very few employment chances in her hometown).
A message Chiaki wants to convey the most in the program: "I'm fed up with realistic times, let's experience the extraordinary more".
Matsuko commented that she also thought that the entertainment in Japan is very plain/reserved, that's why she thought about visual kei, she brought up Sawada Kenji (ジュリー). They talked about using make up talking about Kpop as well, that v-kei is so different.
Next came teaser "tremendously popular in the 90s" - "the word 'Visual Kei' became established overseas" (as background here they showed dir's footage and some foreign fans wearing vkei style).
Chiaki: nowadays Japanese people have an image of Visual-kei as 'old', 'scary', 'behind the times' and they both talk about tylhe extraordinary being important.
Tumblr media
Next part "after 22 years the time has come when Visual-kei is necessary!" They talk about the chronology board prepared by Chiaki, she also explained that the genre was born in 89 with X and the term visual came from X's PSYCHEDELIC VIOLENCE CRIME OF VISUAL SHOCK.
1994 faced restructuring and unemployment crisis, they showed LUNA SEA's TRUE BLUE and commented how popular it got. 'how did Visual-kei fare in such difficult times?'
Matsuko brought up SHAZNA - everyone was shocked then how cute the vocalist was.
Tumblr media
Then they talked about 1999 and Nostradamus and end of century, Chiaki sees 1999 as a peak of visual-kei. They talked about GLAY's legendary show at Makuhari with 200,000 people (they also show their best album sales, about 4,870,000 (the top 3rd in Japan)) and how much media attention it got.
Tumblr media
Another legendary show that was held that year was LUNA SEA's 10th anniversary with a stage that costed hundred millions of yen. That stage got destroyed just 3 days before the concert due to a typhoon but band decided to go on with plan and held the concert as planned.
(haha I can totally see Chiaki's sparkling when she talks about LUNA SEA😆)
Tumblr media
"Totally necessary for these times! Introduction of the legendary bands immersed in the extraordinary":
🌙MALICE MIZER: 'immersed in extraordinary with super extravagant costumes! ultimate visuals with extreme beauty'
Matsuko commented that performance (from merveilles~終焉と 帰趨~l'espace) looks like Takarazuka. Chiaki said that for the sake of worldview they don't play instruments on stage and that Sho Kiryuuin from Golden Bomber was very influenced by them.
Matsuko said that fans of course want to see the artist perform, but also are happy to see them dance, that visual-kei is infinite.
Matsuko also compared Mana to Marie Antoinette.
🌹Chiaki then introduced Versailles as a band that still pursues such worldview. They are dressed as French aristocrats, are very popular abroad especially in France.
💀DIR EN GREY: 'extraordinary performance going to the very end'
Matsuko knows dir, Chiaki explained for the audience about their major debut with 3 singles produced by YOSHIKI, that they are popular overseas as well as in Japan. They express 'human pain' and 'the darkness of the heart', the peak of extraordinary. Chiaki talked about the situation with M Stage program when the tv got complains from parents after their kids cried seeing dir on tv, Mstage was on tv just before Crayon Shin-chan and many ended up seeing one of dir's songs (I love how someone burst out laughing in the studio here😂). Matsuko asked what kind of performance was it:
Tumblr media
"The following footage contains material not suitable for all audiences"🤣🤣🤣
Tumblr media
and of course it's 残-ZAN-
Chiaki: The shock received in your own living room...
Matsuko: certainly, suddenly seeing this kind of deathmetal
Matsuko: something that Tamori (Kazuyoshi Morita, tv celebrity/presenter/comedian) could suddenly introduce
the commentary: 'and even in recent performances' (they proceed to show dir's live footage from DSS in Nippon Budokan)
Chiaki comments that as dir's lyrics are about the pain and extraordinary, and how cathartic can be a very intense show, and she really loves how 'we love the extraordinary in order to deal with the ordinary life' (yes😭❤️)
Matsuko: ... really? But they have songs so deathmetal like. Ok, I guess I'll check them out.
Chiaki: I just heard from the staff that dir's vocalist, Kyo, is a fan of this program and is watching every week.
Matsuko: who's here connected with the band?? (asking the studio people)
Staff (from behind camera): when getting permission [to show dir's footage] I was told that.
Matsuko: so in a sense I'm deathmetal too. Ok, I think that's it.
Tumblr media
Next the program moves on to "a mystery hot pot eaten in the dark of performance incorporating all trends and fashion"
Matsuko: is 'Yaminabe performance' a band's name? Ah, ok, no, we're changing the topic!
Chiaki explains that it's difficult to explain what visual-kei bands are like now because there are so many elements.
They show the Raid (manga style) and Kiryuu (Japanese horror) as examples of the 2nd generation of evolving visual style, and what elements entered visual-kei: rap, dance, underground idols, Japanese kimono, ???
Tumblr media
Matsuko: is the bottom right visual-kei??
Chiaki: has common elements (くくり)
●they show NOCTURNAL BLOODLUST and talk about their image and Hiro, the vocalist. the ??? gets changed into 'muscles', they comment on change in the expectation that musicians are very skinny.
Matsuko comments she personally likes the look of the 'underground idols', like what are they actually doing there?
●They show 0.1gの誤算 performance and Chaki explained anything can happen there. They also showed their recent show where fans prerecorded their shouts and member calling on their phones to play them when loud response is not allowed due to covid.
●Alice9 represents 'dance' element.
●CHOKE represents 'rap'
●Mogamigawa Tsukasa for 'kimono', the drummer in THE MICRO HEAD 4N'S who's singing enka.
The 2nd half of the program introduced humanbeatbox topic (very cool to watch but no report from that part😅)

Kagerou Poject Reboot: RealSound Interview
Tumblr media
Jin x Shirakami Mashirou x Yuumao
Their takes on the changes that each of them has witnessed in the past ten years and the things they have been seeing in the whirlpool that is the VOCALOID scene.
Translation commissioned by the amazing @sodasexual!
Celebrating the tenth anniversary of Kagerou Project, the Re:boot project has commenced. An interview has been carried out to ask about its background and prospects.
The ones we have interviewed are a trio consisting of the author of Kagerou Project and multi-creator Jin, as well as Shirakami Mashirou (bass) and Yuumao (drums/Hitorie), who are also production members of the original music piece and were listed as the performance team of “Children Record (Re:boot)”, which was released the other day as the first part of the Re:boot project.
We had them talk about the true intentions behind “Re:boot”, which means “to restart”, about the recordings where they created the concept of “overcoming the original composition” and about the near future, including the new song, along with the steps they have taken in the past ten years.
The “pain” that comes with creating something unprecedented.
——How did Kagerou Project’s Re:boot project begin?
Jin: Kagerou Project was set into motion back in 2011, so this year is the turning point of ten years since then. In that meantime, there were lots of things I fretted over, but as I discussed with the people around me about whether there was anything I could do, we came up with the idea of “remaking the old compositions”. I thought if that’s what we were going to do, then I wanted to try doing it with the original members of Children Record, so I contacted the two.
——How did each of you feel when Shirakami Mashirou-san and Yuumao-san received the proposal of a remake?
Jin: Regarding Mashirou-san, I was contacting him for the first in a long time. “Let’s go out for a drive,” I told him.
Shirakami: Right, right. We went on a car drive together. Just us seeing each other already felt nostalgic in itself, so we talked like normal about lots of things and were like, “Yeah, it was fun back then”. I felt that “Aah, I’m looking forward to this”.
Jin: While talking to the staff, I honestly felt uneasy about creating something new, even though it was a remake. If I had to use a word to represent these ten years in which I’ve been writing novels and making music for Kagerou Project, it was extremely “painful” to me. So I wanted to talk to Mashirou-san first-thing. On a different occasion, when a staff member asked me, “Have you been keeping in contact with Mashirou-san lately?”, I suggested, “If it’s okay, can I contact him myself?”, and then invited him for the drive. Rather than the request for the remake, I firstly wanted to discuss with him, “I’m planning on doing this thing; what do you think?”
Shirakami: There was one more person taking part in that drive, right?
Jin: That’s right. Since the coronavirus was going on, we went driving in three separate cars, and the third person was INPNE-kun, who made the video of Children Record Re:boot. That was INPINE-kun and Mashirou-san’s first meeting. At that time, INPNE-kun hadn’t started working on the video yet, but thinking back on it now, I’m glad the two of them were introduced to each other that way. It feels like our hearts bound the music and the video together.
——Yuumao-san, what about you?
Yuumao: Jin-kun and I were seeing each other constantly. I had received a request to tackle the recordings of the songs he had been making until now. Amidst that, there was a day when I received a request, amongst other matters, and was scheduled to “record Children Record”. Up to around three days before the recording, I spent my time wondering, “What’s this supposed to be?” (laughs).
——Jin-san, what did you think when choosing Shirakami-san and Yuumao-san, the original duo?
Jin: I only felt that I wanted to do it with these two. I didn’t have any other choice in the first place. I’m awfully fond of the contents that they performed in the original song, and I had no complaints other than towards my own abilities for making musical arrangements.
——You said earlier that “the past ten years were extremely painful”, but what kind of feeling was it?
Jin: The year when I began these activities, 2011, was the time when I was attending a vocational school; the band I was playing with back then disbanded midway, but by sheer coincidence, the older brother of a friend of mine was using VOCALOIDs and he taught me about them, so I really started doing it without any backing. Having played in a band until then, there was a lot of passion and many messages that I wanted to convey inside me, so this project was about me taking them and beginning to paddle off, and one of the aspects of it was that VOCALOID made the things I wanted to do into a reality. But that was a period where it felt like the VOCALOID culture wasn’t yet acknowledged. On top of that, other than the music, Kagerou Project had novels, and a lot of it had no precedents, so I believe there were parts of it that were difficult to understand for people who weren’t already into it. I didn’t know if the path I was going through was right or wrong. But the people around me kept telling me “not to take my foot off the accelerator”. In that sense, I definitely have negative memories of it. I also had the feeling that I was estranged from the music scene.
——Indeed, the music of Kagerou Project is unmistakably rock, and I believe it was something that pierced through Japan’s rock culture, but I think you might have felt that you were not understood by the rock bands of back then.
Jin: That’s right. Surprisingly, the people around me, including creators and those who were in bands, gave off an air of ridicule with a “he’s a faker” kind of nuance to it. I understood the awesomeness of rock bands, so of course, there were times when I’d wonder, “What is it that I’m doing?”. During these ten years, there was a moment halfway when I almost broke down. Due to many primary factors, I might’ve been unable to go on – like, there was a time when I found myself thinking that it was weird to keep it up while I was so at loss. There was also a period where I was unable to create anything for Kagerou Project.
——When did that happen, exactly?
Jin: Rather than breaking down all of a sudden, it’s more like I slowly became unable to create any more. Although I was being criticized on one side, I was also being demanded on another, so I was at a level where I was obligated to write. However, while all sorts of emotions were whirling up, I suddenly thought of something. There was a time when I got closure from that feeling of “not being acknowledged” that I mentioned earlier.
——When was that?
Jin: Around the time when I was making the previous album (“Mekakucity Reload”, which was released in November 2018). I was called “inexperienced” and “unskilled” not only in the rock scene but also in the light novel scene, so I made effort to sweep it all away. It felt like I was being treated like a tumor in everything I did. But then I suddenly thought, “Yeah, that’s fine”. There was a moment one day when the mists actually cleared, like, “What was I so at loss about?” It’s not like I’ve been going at it just so that someone would praise me. If anything, I lived my life constantly being made fun of. I’m no good at sports, I’m not smart, and I by no means did I ever excel at communicating with people at all. By the moment that I thought, if this is my character, then maybe being praised isn’t the only right answer, I was suddenly alleviated. If I’m being called a “child deceiver”, then I’m going to do that with all my might and apply myself to it, is what I thought. I refused to go to school for a while when I was in middle school, yet I had the feeling that I wanted to face this part of me, not in a fashionable or trendy way but in a miserable state, and fight him head-on. I guess that’s what suited me best. To me, Shirakami-san and Yuumao-san are people with a “chosen vision”. They have the sense to perceive beauty. I think I don’t have that in me. Which is why I was in pain. I was in a dilemma where I couldn’t grasp music as an art. However, it’s not like I’m making fun of hamburgers, but I started to think that I wanted to compete using something punk, something hamburger-like. It took me a while to get there.
——How do you feel after listening to what Jin-san just said, Yuumao-san and Shirakami-san?
Yuumao: Jin-kun said just now that he was “fretting” and “stuck”, but I knew about his circumstances to a certain extent, so I imagined that he was unable to move on. But while talking about all sorts of things with Jin-kun, when producing stuff in the last three to four years, we had the feeling that it basically boils down to “if we don’t provide this and that, it won’t be interesting”. This isn’t limited to KagePro – I just personally felt that the productions of his works were shifting towards not “making something good”, but rather making something that could be properly verbalized. For me, as someone on the performing side, I was also in a situation where, rather than just providing good content one way or another, I became increasingly able to explain it. In the end, we change just like that, is what I felt. And you base yourself on this to make new songs, right?
Jin: That’s right.
Yuumao: Thought so. That’s why I feel like the stuff that will come from you in the future will have stronger colors.
——Shirakami-san, what about you? How did the scenario change in the past decade and how do you think that you have been progressing as a musician?
Shirakami: The biggest change that I felt the most on my skin is that the huge Vocaloid movement itself has completely gained familiarity with the public in the last ten years. About a while after I had started associating with Mafumafu-kun, amongst the musicians that I’ve met, the number of people who came up to tell me, “I’ve been listening to Vocaloid” has increased. It’s been one round ever since we began doing this stuff, and the people who were the consumers back then became producers, is what I mean. That’s not us, the first generation – it’s a kind of follower generation, and we’ve completely permeated them. The context of what was born not only from VOCALOID but also the so-called internet culture has blended with the category named “ordinary rock bands”. That’s what I’ve been feeling for three or four years now. Therefore, the “feeling of being a knock-off” that Jin-kun innitially talked about has disappeared with the change of times, so to speak. I feel this keenly even in regards to myself and I think it’s an objective truth. However, from a personal point of view, even though changes are happening in many places, what is fundamentally required of us hasn’t changed much. For example, I believe that VTubers are also getting public familiarity now, but I think the reason why VTubers are trendy is that there are human beings underneath. For VOCALOID, too, the composers, so-called Vocalo-P’s, are the ones who get popularity, and one way or another, there’s also a phenomenom where the songs sung by popular Utaite become widespread. In the end, I think what matters is the fact that there are people behind it. I personally think we have to create stuff that we can be proud of while paying close attention to these things. In short, just because all internet content is intangible isn’t enough; we, the creators, have to carry the literacy of how society is going to approve of us.
Jin: That’s right. I think that VOCALOID music up to this point, Kagerou Project included, will have to be supplemented. Since we have words that are so easy to understand, such as “rock band”, “singer” and “songwriter”, for example, people go, “What the heck is a Vocalo-P, then?” At first, there was this impression that we were being given a weird alias by strangers, and I also felt like the adults, the people who are in control of the media, made us into something easy to digest. In regards to “deceiving children”, in order to earn money the fastest with it and make it spread the widest, the most effective method was probably to make it marketable, simple to understand and easy for adults to put labels on.
Therefore, I think that things such as “What is it that I can’t give up on?” and “What did I even want to do to begin with?” are the true identity of the realization that I mentioned earlier. It’s like wondering whether or not you can say aloud in the middle of a classroom that you “enjoy anime” or “really like cute characters”. Back in those days, I couldn’t to it at all. The class had castes. But I want to say this in a loud voice. Rather than trendy and fashionable overseas music, I much sooner believe in Summon Night EX-THESE’s theme song (“Byakuya” by Matsumoto Eiko) and other such music that I’ve always liked. Therefore, I want to start off from the fact that people think, “Aah, this guy has no sense”. It’s like I’m saying sorry to my middle school second-year self for almost forgetting the feelings I had back then. I seriously don’t care about winning. Being number one or being famous doesn’t matter at all to me. Only, I just don’t want people to act on their own accord like I’m a loser. I think that means I want to do something to fix this.
Earning recognition for creating KagePro content is still a few ways ahead.
——Back in 2013, we had a conversation between Jin-san and Suganami Eijun-san from THE BACK HORN, and back then, Jin-san said, “I’m handing bombs over to my grade school and middle school selves”. And that live concerts were the detonators.
Jin: That’s right.
——Regarding KagePro, I feel that this thing about “handing bombs over” is very prominent. Just as Shirakami-san said, VOCALOID “earned its own rights”, but in KagePro’s case, when I see the responses to the reboot, each and every one of the comments is very passionate.
Yuumao: Lately, be it with KagePro or Hitorie, the number of people who say either that they’re listening or had been listening to VOCALOID in the past year and a half has truly increased a lot. I kind of feel on my skin that many people are getting rooted in it.
——Jin-san, do you feel this too?
Jin: No, I don’t. This is a twisted way of putting it, but I think it’s a few ways ahead for us to receive that evaluation. I feel like it’s not over yet. When I started off by myself and decided to move on from my child self to the future, I wasn’t acknowledged by my elders and seniors. I feel inside me that this still isn’t over. I intend to be in a whirlpool. It hasn’t been proven yet whether I’m a knock-off or not. It makes me really happy that there are people who were influenced by us, but that opinion doesn’t make me change my mind.
——Jin-san, how do you think of KagePro in the near future?
Jin: When I look toward the future, I simply want to finish it. I will be taking my time to create content, but first things first, I want to devote myself to the completion of this project. I definitely won’t abandon it midway. I have this firmly in mind now. As for its contents, it’s mainly two things. For now, firstly, we have started the reboot from Children Record, but of course, there’s also a reboot for the project’s story. Moreover, there will be new developments coming next. There are also new songs and new stuff story-wise. And I want to do them with these two members, for as much as they allow. There’s the possibility that I’ll be making the drums play at 200 BPM when we’re in our 50’s. I think the announcements will be slow, but I’m very positive about this, so I myself am looking forward to it too. And, on the other hand, I also would like to ask these two for their ideas in regards to making music for this project and their opinions, like what they want to work hard on.
——What do you mean?
Jin: I honestly think that Children Record was extremely well-done. When it comes to creating something new, I want to destroy the approach that I’ve been using until now. How about it?
Shirakami: If we’re talking about approach, I believe we’ve been witnessing all sorts of possibilities. We went to studios together the past ten years for that, but we can also do it online like we did this time. Ah, we haven’t gone on a training camp yet.
Jin: I want to go on one.
Yuumao: For sure.
Shirakami: That might be interesting too. Now, if we’re talking just about the bass, it seems this production will turn out as one where I’ll get to confirm once again up to what point I can go – that’s what I thought when listening to you talk. I think the stance of trying to challenge yourself no matter how much you age is, of course, the way that musicians should be and I believe that challenging myself is the path I’m going to take, but there are genres, ideologies and aestheticss when it comes to music makers and performers. Personally, amongst the things that I’ve been producing together with Jin-kun until now, whenever we had a subject in front of us, we would only think about how to do our utmost to give a displayable form to it, but be it with the phrasing, nuance or melody, I feel like we have options for all of them. In a sense, there’s a side of Yuumao and I that has been branded as performers as we worked on productions with Jin-kun. So the extension of the straight line that we have been charting until now is, of course, still there. Now that ten years have passed, if I can make new songs with you from now on, I seriously think it might be okay to reflect once again on how my style is being processed. It’s as if it has matured. I have chosen this job out of free will, so one way or another, I’m aware that it’ll be important to keep polishing it from now onwards.
Jin: Thank you very much. That’s literally it. Even in the current Children Record, I think there’s some aspect of it that was made up from the minds of you two, the rhythm section members. Both Mashirou-san and Yuumao-san make new proposals every time. You never try to trace the past at all. The way you think about sound is insanely serious.
Yuumao: I’m planning to do my best to create sounds in a more loose manner from now on. As for what I mean by “loose”, to put it simply, I think it’s quite important to be inspired by present-time musical instruments, and that we get influence from that, when we’re making the sound details. I think it’s bad if we don’t accept and face these things. In particular, I believe that the bass and drums are the parts that change the most. KagePro won’t change yet it has changed, and I think we should keep bringing out that aspect of it.
――Indeed, as a concept, this reboot is not something made to arrange things in a completely different direction from before. Be it a ballad or programmed music, for instance, there would be nothing of that in it. It’s a remake, a rebuild – at any rate, it felt like you are building it up.
Jin: Thank you very much. In the end, we also shouldn’t think that we just perfomed it over again. So it felt like a rematch. We were all at home, but we did that recording ready to beat our selves from about eight years ago. What should I do to make the original members say that this one “was cooler” than the precious song called Children Record? I think I was able to find an answer to that one.
Shirakami: In a way, using VOCALOID might have been its forte. For example, whenever a band remade a song from ten years ago, I usually felt that “the vocals have none of the freshness that they had back then” or “the reckless feel from that time was better”. But because it’s VOCALOID, that part doesn’t change. It might be that we managed to grant positive changes only to the good points.
Jin: I see. I think that’s possible. My mindset this time was to play the guitar so much that my fingers would bleed. I want to take on more challenges from now onward too.
