got a free sample of some body lotion which has a scent that is described as "thoroughly masculine" on the packaging. in practice this apparently means it smells kinda like cedar. which is fascinating to me, because as far as I know the practice of putting cedar wood blocks in with your clothes is not gendered, but I guess cedar-scented lotion is? is it just that when it comes to scents anything that's not explicitly girly is manly by default?? or what? I'm thinking way too deeply about this probably

massively bitchy vent beneath: warnings for writing, plus-sized body stuff, and discussions around portraying things in fiction

I really did think I didn't have any trigger-settings for engaging in fiction - firm dislikes, yes, but nothing knee-jerk - and then one of the pieces from my writing course which I'm supposed to be giving feedback for centres around a 'small, petite pixie-ish' woman getting resentful about a 'wobbly, second-places-at-dinner' woman being confident in her body and 'flaunting' herself in the changing rooms, and taking photos of her naked plus-sized friend and putting them on the internet without her knowing.

and holy fuck did I knee-jerk.

listen to me. listen. I don't think fiction should have forbidden topics. I reblog a lot about being proship and genuinely believing even the dark shitty things should be written about if people want to explore them. and hell, this is only an extract, and who knows where this story is going! depiction is not endorsement! fiction can and should sometimes be dark in unexpected ways!

however.

that reeaally doesn't mean I have to read it. and I especially don't have to read about someone probably imagined to look like my body type being body-shamed and revenge porned without at least getting a one-line warning at the start of the damn extract.

(there's also a bit about the petite woman suddenly getting envious of her plus-sized friend's tits and if this ends up having a it's hard to be a small thin woman too angle I will fucking lose it)

(I also hate the 'you can't write about this thing unless you're in this demographic' thing. but if I turn up to the writing group on Saturday and this was written by a non-plus-sized girl I'm gonna have blood on my hands)

(listen. I still genuinely think nothing should be off limits. I imagine that to some people, writing something like this could be very empowering and/or cathartic, and that's a good thing. your characters can and should be problematic and that's also a good thing!)

(I just also think that sending something like this around for people to read & comment, knowing that everyone is expected to read it, knowing how plus-sized people are treated in our society, and not including any sort of 'heads up guys just so you know' is either a: pretty thoughtless or b: done entirely for shock value, and oh boy do I have Opinions)

Misadventures in Baking

I made my dad a cake called a Dutch Apple Cake for Father's Day. It's an upside-down cake made with apples. And spice cake instead of yellow cake. Probably tastes okay but it tried to escape when turning it out of the cast-iron skillet so it looks pretty messy.
