Ranunculus asiaticus (Persian buttercup)

Let’s face it, Persian buttercups are just plain beautiful - and that’s not just my opinion. In March 2023, Canada Post issued two lovely Persian buttercup stamps (see photo number 4, copied from the Canada Post website). However, the original wildflower species looks nothing like any of these exotic, modern hybrid varieties.

In the Eastern Mediterranean, Ranunculus asiaticus has a single row of five petals. Modern hybrids demonstrate quite extreme doubling which means a lot more than just twice as many petals (as you can see). Doubling is a very rare mutation in wildflowers but by gardeners selectively breeding, generation after generation over thousands of years, you end up with this type of beautiful ‘monstrosity’.

Incidentally, the wild five petal Ranunculus asiaticus is so rare in its original habitat that it’s protected in many places, including Israel.

Yesterday I had a really shitty day. I had lost my phone on an Uber drive and I hadn't heard back from the driver at all. My SO is currently back home, half across the world and I miss him terribly. I was really down at work and kicking myself. Then I heard the door go (usually means it's a customer) so I appeared from the back. The guy asks me by my name, I say yes. Then he hands me this huge pink bouquet parcel. I was stunned, like are you sure? He hesitated a bit and was like yeees... *patting his pockets, found a note* from "my SO's name".

It also had the sweetest note in my first language (he can speak it but we usually speak in English). I almost started crying right then and there. They are one of my favorite flowers, the Persian buttercups.

Once in a lifetime movie character moment right there.

Symbolism and transparent version below.

The flowers all represent Vivid BAD SQUAD (and by association the other contributors to RAD BLAST.) The flowers chosen are the ones from the character's 2022 birthday cards.

Kohane: Persian buttercups and Iceland poppies

An: Coreopsis and larkspurs

Akito: Elatior begonias and lemon flowers

Toya: Buttercups, pansies, and yuzu flowers

The flowers are inside Kotaro's chest both as a nod to hanahaki disease (a fictitious ailment resulting from unrequited love that causes flowers to fill the lungs) and to symbolize that Vivid BAD SQUAD are as invaluable as the lungs and heart to Kotaro (that meaning he would be unable to live, and by extension sing, without them.)

His body is falling apart (the spine is cut leaving him severed in half) and his insides are hollow and exposed, further amplifying the message that Vivid BAD SQUAD are the people who pieced him back together and filled the empty spaces in him. For example, the way they (namely Akito) helped him solidify his resolve to surpass RAD WEEKEND after almost giving up music in entirety.

His tears and the hearts, flowing like music is often represented visually as, are the signature colors of the Vivid BAD SQUAD members, and the petal in Kotaro's mouth is the signature color of the unit as a whole.

The song lyrics on the left side are to Joyfulthought by Mom, a song I associate with Kotaro's feelings toward Vivid BAD SQUAD, although namely Akito.

This drawing took about 10 hours, but over half of that was spent on the flowers!

Ranunculus asiaticus (Persian buttercup)

Finally, City Hall is spending my hard-earned, tax dollars on something worthwhile. These highly double-flowered Persian buttercups were planted-out just a few days ago by a city works crew. This species can tolerate light frost, but are not hardy at temperatures below -10°C (15 degrees Fahrenheit). No doubt raised in a luxurious greenhouse, these lovely pieces of 'eye candy' are now getting their first taste of the real world. That's usually when the trouble starts.
