i lowkey forget that percy's full name is perseus. and like. that name goes so hard. because it just sounds like this mf could kick your ass. like imagine you're a junior in high school and your teacher introduces a new student by the name of 'perseus jackson'. and before you even raise your head to look at the guy. you just know this mf could clock you.
i love how different percabeth is from different male lead narrated american middle school romances from the romantic point of view. usually, the male lead has a crush on the cold and kind of mean female protagonist cause she's pretty and not like the other girls.....she's pretty and not like the other girls....thats it oops. but annabeth and percy. annabeth fell first. even though she's cold and sassy too, she believed in percy. she saw the good in him and loved him for it. then percy fell. he didnt have to worry about whether annabeth would like a loser like him. yeah, he doubted why annabeth liked him once in a while, but it was a never a question of 'does she?' its healthy. and thats what makes rick riordan one of the best middle school authors ever thank you bye
something. about. the horror of being sent on an impossible (death) quest and obligations and hospitality politics. the trauma of not having a home, and then the trauma of being in a house that becomes actively hostile to you, one that would swallow you whole and spit out your bones if you step out of line. all of this is conditional, your existence continues to be something men want gone.
it's about going back as far as I can with the perseus narrative because there's always a version of a myth that exists behind the one that survives. the missing pieces are clearly defined, but the oldest recorded version of it isn't there! and there's probably something older before that!! but it's doomed to forever be an unfilled space, clearly defined by an outline of something that was there and continues to be there in it's absence.
and love. it's also about love. even when you had nothing, you had love.
on the opposite side of the spectrum, this is Not About Ovid Or Roman-Renaissance Reception, Depictions And Discourses On The Perseus Narrative.
edit: to add to the above, while it's not about Ovid, because I'm specifically trying to peel things back to the oldest version of this story, Ovid is fine. alterations on the Perseus myth that give more attention Medusa predate Ovid by several centuries. this comic is also not about those, either! there are many versions of this story from the ancient world. there is not one singular True or Better version, they're all saying something.

the amount of affection you get for percy jackson, the character, from reading those books (no matter how long ago it was), is insane. if riordan did nothing else right, he made percy so real, wrote him so well, that readers feel like they know him and they read it for percy. we watch the show and we love walker easier because we loved percy. it lasts. that's good characterization.
more ruri keyframes au because doing a mc from zero is overrated/j

Do you think Zeus ever gets salty about the fact that Sally named Poseidon’s kid after HIS kid
I think to think Zeus isn't salty about Sally naming her son Perseus as well, but that her Perseus is just doing all the same things his Perseus did before he's even a fully grown man. Like, this boy is just putting his namesake to shame

imagine this. it's pjo7 or pjo8. percy and annabeth are questing as usual. but then as they're in a hurry again, they bump into somebody. and it's somebody from one of their old schools. it's a friend who only knows the old them from school. a friend, who after some conversations, would not believe that they have changed so much. a friend who had known them as an insecure little lonely kid and now were faced by two confident and loved warriors. imagine seeing from percy or annabeth's side. and the struggle. should they reconnect with their past? or risk another mortal getting sucked into their dangerous world? and in the end imagine them saying goodbye and walking away with the knowledge that things can always get better, because they did.
