Okay so the funniest thing about Critical Cooldown is for sure Travis getting up and leaving with a speedy "bye friends" the second the cooldown hits the ten minute mark, and booooy can I relate to that. I love me a good post-session-debrief but I'm also always the one who's the first to leave because DnD makes me le tired and I need my sleeeeep. (And DM-extraordinaire @diocletianscabbagefarm is the one who always ropes me back into the conversation with a simple "Just two more things about the session before you go...")

a note for people who may not have noticed this:
at the start of chapter one, we get this view of Vash's wanted poster. notice that bit there about the murder of "Count Revenant Vasquez"
and then in trimax chapter 37, we see here:
Count Revenant Vasquez.
That's Conrad.
now the interesting bit is that Conrad hasn't died by the time we see that wanted poster. he's currently busy working to revive Knives, then follows him around once he's alive again. for Whatever Reason, Vash is being blamed before Conrad's death for his "murder"
which makes me contemplate a few possibilities. Conrad was present around the time of the July Incident. and not only that, but we see in chapter 28 that Vash was looking for him just prior to July
so like, What's The Deal? "Count Revenant Vasquez" is not "dead" by this point, just acting oddly in his big house. perhaps after July with his disappearance, people attributed his "death" to Vash, along with all the rest of July... but why would they focus on just him, rather than all of July? is this Nightow wanting to keep the reality of July under wraps this early in the story? or was Conrad really That socially important that his death would stand out among all the rest of July?
and another thing to consider is how Vash knew to look for him under that name in the first place. Vash was pursuing Knives at this point, the whole Point was that he managed to find Knives in July, but he did it by following the trail of Conrad. he met Conrad when he was a child, the second human he ever met, so maybe he somehow managed to deduce that Conrad was helping Knives out?
except when Vash sees Conrad in trigun chapter 20
he recognizes him, but he can't place from where. is this his July amnesia getting in the way? the general passage of time? it HAS been a century and a half since he officially met him. but if he knew to look for him by that name to find Knives, he must have known Conrad was following him around... and then perhaps as part of the amnesia of everything surrounding July, Vash forgot Conrad too.
it's interesting! brings the question of how Vash caught wind of Conrad's involvement with Knives in the first place. we do see that Vash has his fingers in information networks (like when he talks to the "shoemaker" in May City to try to gather information), so maybe that's how he found out? which honestly I find fascinating, given that Especially this early in the story, we just see Vash acting the fool. but even Years prior to the start of the story, he shows a level of resourcefulness and intuition that is Very much not congruent with his act of being a "fool".
and then he shows up to confront Knives in July and his plan is to just
show up, point his gun at him, and then... ???? something? which obviously blows up in his face in a MAJOR way bc Knives easily knocks him out & then has Conrad experiment on him.
which. isn't directly related to the Conrad point lol it just baffles me how smart yet dumb Vash is constantly. high intelligence, low wisdom build for SURE.
but yeah! I didn't notice the Count Revenant thing my first read through, so here's this detail for anyone else who might've missed it like i did

People who go to bed early always complain that the night is too short, but for those of us who stay up all night, it can feel as long as a lifetime.

I went to a club. It’s really just a place where humans are reduced to creatures without intellect. I personally value intellect too much to tolerate that shit. And I don’t want to end up like that blank-eyed nonsensical drunk woman who apologised fifteen times for brushing past someone. Came back to eat garlic bread in my bed.

“I tried to tell them how to spell it, but…” There, blocked in large writing as Jayce slowly turned the cup in Vik’s direction, was ‘KIKTOR’. He winces, offering a sheepish look as he nudges it across the table. Still, despite how apologetic he looks, amusement still teases along the edge of his tilted grin. “Well…”
caffeine placated the burden of fatigue. viktor was slovenly, brunette locks unkempt, lapels wilting and sad, there was little decorum in heaving one’s irascible lab - partner to alleviation and yet, there he was, a paragon of good intentions and sheepish smiles. he could not stay mad at jayce, not when he had endured the swatting of a macilent hand and the acidity of his protests. there was a knowing that wove through the passage of time, an amity that was - almost curative, even when hours of sleep had been lost to the pursuit of intrigue.
the cup is a momentary respite, paper embossed with the outline of delicate flowers, a plastic lid and large, flagrant letters as an indicator of who it was for. viktor shakes his head, accepting the offering with a soft sigh. ❝ i cannot blame her. ❞ he wonders if it is contagious, the curve of jayce’s mouth, the concept truly baffling for his imitates it almost. ❝ it is not a name memorable to most. ❞

Randall smiled, his heart swelling with pride and joy upon seeing her reaction: Was this the first time she had ever seen herself outside of the waters of the bayou, he wondered? Was this the first time she beheld her visage in all her life? The notion made his heart ache, but still he smiled to her, so touched by her reaction.
“You’re beautiful,” he sighed softly, and with those words of praise, he fell asleep.
When he awoke, it was morning. At least, it seemed to be morning, judging by the weak, warm light shining in through the window, as he pushed himself up, rubbing his sore neck as he noted the table with the hat still on it, as well as his notebook, still open to last night’s page, resting on his lap. He groaned as he sat up, barely noticing his father’s voice calling, “He’s in here!”
“Oh, Randall,” June sighed as the Pace parents rushed into the room, saying, “We were so worried when you didn’t come down for breakfast and you weren’t in your room!”
“Sorry to worry you, Ma,” he sighed with a small smile, saying, “I guess I just, uh...stayed up a bit too late. Err, what time is it?”
“Time for breakfast, at least,” Wilhelm replied, as he helped his boy up, saying, “You’ve got to get downstairs and get some food and coffee in you before you go out the door, I don’t want Minnie yelling at you just because you were a minute or two late!”
