Just FYI for Smartdrive users if your control knob seems to stop working
Went out today and momentarily thought my Smartdrive dial control was toast. Had to manually wheel around Target which was rough. Got home, cleaned the contacts between the controller cable and the motor with a little alcohol and it’s alive again. I don’t even want to know what one of these costs to replace.
A lot of the info on the internet for troubleshooting is not great! So here’s what happened to me and what I did:
Essentially: it wouldn’t power on the LED on the control dial and wouldn’t start the motor so I turned it off and on, then the LED came on dimly but it still wouldn’t do anything. After cleaning with a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol, the controller LED came on brightly and blinked as usual, and the motor worked again, yay! I was able to use the Apple Watch Bluetooth control but…. That’s kind of unreliable so I was nervous getting around the store with that. But it helped rule out where the problem was exactly, since I could at least tell the motor and Bluetooth functions were still working, so it must be in the controller somewhere.
Also! You should install the Pushtracker app and check your firmware. Apparently there was a recall in August 2023 because sometimes the motors just won’t stop and it’s a software issue. Mine was apparently several firmwares out of date. The app is a little glitchy but seems to work ok. You can also adjust speed settings and stuff there. Just so you know!
That was a real panic moment for me, I thought the cable got kinked somehow getting in and out of the car, but it was ok.
On the other hand, this is probably my own fault because I named it Rotom, after the Pokémon, because the idea of a little ghost haunting a motor to help me get around is adorable. So sneaky though. I really, really want to get a sticker of a Rotom face to put on it.

Wheelchair Woes
Broken cement & cobblestone sidewalks aren't very #spoonie friendly, so my nice cool 14 mile ride in the early morning landed me instead at the local ER for a sick Permobile wheelchair.
Using the chapel/meditation room as a repair bay because in order to reconnect the one battery connector that had gotten bumped loose, I had to practically take the entire tear apart. This will not surprise any other wheelchair users as power wheelchairs and notorious for being difficult to maintain and repair.
What amused me was realizing that there is a heavier duty fully Steel bracket holding on my luggage rack which is just big enough and mind to hold five cans of beer.
As opposed to a whole bunch of the parts on the wheelchair, including said luggage rack, that are made of plastic that vibrates like crazy if you're not on a completely smooth roadway.
*sigh*
Priorities, I guess. Gotta be able to travel with your alcohol, right?

the ramp for the lift was shrimply stuck this way <3 this was the bus the first bus driver had to call for me because the first bus's door wouldn't disengage the locks; i had to board a third bus instead. but we just love the MTA (:
all three bus drivers have been nothing but lovely. as usual this is a corporate problem, not a blue collar worker problem. ensuring the wheelchair lifts are fully operational should be a mandatory part of the daily examination each bus undergoes prior to departing the terminal to begin its routes.
even if you and none of your loved ones use mobility aids: call your local transit company, especially if they are the MTA, and find out if they test wheelchair lifts on every single vehicle every single day. if they don't, lodge a complaint.

hear me out: civilian deadpool au except he just keeps getting arrested for the STRANGEST THINGS (illegal ownership of a chicken? someone just dumped an egg on his street? it hatches when he’s trying to cook it for breakfast? he RAISED IT?) and matt murdock is his exhausted lawyer who has to keep telling him to shut up in the interrogation room.
does he ever actually go to jail? no, maybe probation, maybe a fine. but arrested? half sure every cop in the city is just sick of hearing about his life. every juror thinks he’s just morbidly unlucky and a tiny bit moronic.
and he is.
detective: (sigh) so you have a chicken?
wade: oh, yeah, yolko ono! she’s my pride and joy, i had a mug and a mousepad printed- *pulling out wallet pictures*
matt: wade. no.
wade: i could bring her over if you want-
matt: WADE.
one time matt has to spring wade for grand theft auto of the nice old lady he lives next doors to. the automobile he supposedly stole? a select elevated motorized wheelchair.
wade: she LENT me the chair.
detective: and how’d she do that?
wade: i broke into her backyard because i heard a thump and i thought she fell over.
matt: jesus—
wade: so she didn’t fall over. apparently it was a twig that fell on an ice chest. but she was there, and she was yelling ‘jazzy! jazzy!’ and i was wondering why she was telling me to grab her jazzy, but i wasn’t about to turn down a free jazzy. so i walk over to it, i turn it on, i hop on, i say thank you to the kind old lady, and i wheel it out of there.
matt: goddamn it, wade—
detective: you stole a permobil.
wade: pardon?
detective: the wheelchair was a permobil.
wade: she said it was a jazzy!
detective: …
detective: jazzy is her HUSBAND.
wade: …
detective: …
matt: i give up.
and the nail in everyone’s coffin? when the precinct brings in wade’s fucking kidnap victim.
peter: kidnap? me?
detective: were you or were you not kidnapped by wade wilson and driven to the middle of nowhere?
peter: listen, man, farthest wade ever drove me was to a gamestop in manhattan from queens. i don’t drive. and then i ask if we can hit a seven eleven, since i really wanted a bag of chips. but then i fall asleep in the passenger seat on the way there. and when i wake up, i’m home - he didn’t buy me the bag of chips, though.
detective: … and when state troopers spotted his car in philadelphia? with someone passed out inside?
peter: we were in philly? and he didn’t wake me up?
detective: do you seriously mean to tell me you were completely passed out for a two hour and ten minute drive?
peter: i’m a college student with rent due in a month and a new paper due every time i breathe. and wade is an idiot who doesn’t know left from right, boots up waze, says his goodbyes to the universe, and starts driving. i think there’s your case.
detective: …
detective: damn it.

Places with "just a few steps" aren't accessible to ambulatory wheelchair users, either. This isn't an angry post because I don't know if full time wheelchair users really understand that, but a lot of ambulatory users are just as fucked when encountering a step as full time users. The problem is not that ambulatory users are the only people being accommodated. The problem is that business don't think or care about any wheelchair user and ambulatory users are only sometimes accommodated by accident and only if they're a very specific kind of ambulatory. The "well we're accessible if you can walk a little" excuse is just that, an excuse to try to pin the problem on the wheelchair user rather than the business. It's not even a valid excuse because it fundamentally and perhaps intentionally misunderstands how a lot of ambulatory wheelchair users live.
I'm ambulatory but sitting up uses a large amount of my energy, almost as much as standing does. I use a Permobil M3 Corpus that has power tilt, recline, and footrest adjustment so I can adjust into an energy preserving position. My chair weighs 400lbs and I'm not leaving it outside or in a lobby so I can do a "couple of steps". I don't think the usually minimum wage employees get paid enough to babysit a $13000 piece of equipment that is virtually irreplaceable and vital to my freedom. I'm not the only person who can't get my chair over stairs and can't afford to leave it behind. There are plenty of ambulatory powerchair users. There are plenty of ambulatory users who can't lift their own chairs and don't want strangers touching their mobility aid. There are plenty of ambulatory users who can't do stairs at all. Most ambulatory wheelchair users don't want to leave their chair behind out of fear that it will be stolen or misplaced.
This isn't a time for pointing fingers and "who does society like better"ing each other. It's a time for demanding that the law be followed and new laws be put in place together so that no one has to sacrifice their safety and comfort to access necessities or entertainment or be barred from those things entirely.

Things to research before getting your first custom manual wheelchair
one of the biggest things I can recommend to anyone getting a new custom chair (but especially a first custom chair) is to understand all of the parts of a wheelchair and what they do. I decided to make a guide with wheelchair parts to research and places to look for information to make this process a little bit easier. additional link suggestions are welcome.

post of some disability aids/equipment that i hope for in future. (or think could help me). with pictures.
some of this is specific for disability, some is more general.
inspired by @aleswell post!
my body is very weak and floppy (low muscle tone). also have joint hypermobility. i need a lot of support to hold my body in good posture.
i need to be very reclined/tilted majority of the time. i spend a lot of time in bed, semi-propped-up with pillows. i hate my current bed a lot. it doesn't support my body well at all. it is also way too high - hard to get in and out of bed.
even if i get good supportive seating, i will still probably need to spend majority of my time in bed.
beds:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
first picture is a montessori floor bed shaped like a house. i could put blankets or sheets over the top and make a safe den! i could make it really comfy for sleep. and low to ground is good. also wish for more "normal" bed like this one.
second picture is a safespace. basically same reason for why i like it. but also it is safer and maybe more comfy than the wood. it just looks nice to be in there.
third picture is a profiling bed. this is the best option for controlling my position and good support to sit in bed and keep everything aligned. but it is medical looking and i don't like it. it doesn't look as comfy or safe.
i wish there was a way to "merge" these into something perfect for me...
special chair:
Tumblr media
picture is the Hydroflex chair from Careflex company. it comes with different back options and support options. so not always look exactly like this. it tilts and reclines with a remote. i think this is the chair i will try soon!
i hope 🤞🏻 if i get this, i will be able to go downstairs and be somewhere else than bed all day. (but that comes with its own challenges of being around people and more sensory input).
wheelchair/buggy:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
first picture is a Permobil powerchair (don't know which one).
second picture is an adult buggy. brand is Axiom i think.
a powerchair would be great for tilt/recline options. BUT i don't know if i could manage to drive it myself all the time. it takes so much focus and effort and energy. and so hard, especially outside. i have low awareness of surroundings, so i feel scared and unsafe in powerchair outside.
so maybe a buggy or manual wheelchair with high level of seating support would be better. but i might get frustrated about can't control where i go. 🤷🏻‍♂️
for both of these, i would need a lot more extra supports and straps.
things i already have:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this exact bath lift, and this exact non-custom powerchair (bad👎🏻). i also have a stairlift (not this one).
the bath lift is good 👍🏻. but i can barely sit in this wheelchair. i hate it. it has no support and i can't tolerate this upright position for long at all. and struggle to manage drive it.
but it is the only reason i can go to appointments. so i am still grateful to have it. just hate the pain and fatigue and the difficult-ness.
sorry it got so long! i hope it is read-able.

do you have any advice for new powerchair users? getting a permobil m3 soon and feeling so overwhelmed at the transition
Ooooh that's the wheelchair I have! I was stressed for a while about the transition too, until I actually got the thing and after that LOVED it.
It can handle most grass but will track in ALL the mud and dirt.
When going through tight spaces or cooking, flip up your footplate if you can. It helps prevent you from denting and scratching cupboards and appliances.
If you have elevation or adjustable positioning, you can adjust two at the same time from the keypad! (So like, tilting back to neutral and lowering your footrest at the same time)
If you have elevation, getting tall helps when you're trying to navigate a crowd.
If you DON'T have electrics on your footrest then it will get stuck easily. Pull the adjustment knob and jiggle the footrest up and down and it eventually gets moving again.
You can hang grocery bags off the armrest that doesn't have the control panel on it, but watch out to make sure they arent rubbing on the wheels because that will make the bag break.
Don't bother to get the fancy tilting cupholder, I fucking OBLITERATED mine in two days and it costs like 60 bucks :(
SUPPOSEDLY you can set it up to control the TV and stuff from your joystick but I never figured that one out.
These aren't IMPORTANT, but they're nice to have:
They attach to the side rails of your chair next to the cushion. This shop has a plain black bag OR you could do what I do and buy the replacement brackets and then put any bag you want as long as it has D rings where straps can go. I have one on each side and they're the best thing ever.
There are plenty of other joystick shapes and styles out there and likely 3d print files. this is just the shop I bought mine from. The joystick shape that comes with it is kind of uncomfortable to use.

heya, do u have any advice for a new powerchair user to get comfy and confident using it? i have a permobil m3. it just gets so much more attention out in the world than my last chair and its making me not wanna go out >.<
Hi! Congratulations on your new chair, I hope that it can really help you. I also really noticed a change in how people viewed me when moving from a manual wheelchair to a power chair especially when I first started using it.
I think dealing with that attention is something that gets a lot easier with time, the more times I go out the less I worry about people staring at me or making comments.
For me getting my power chair meant I could do a lot more and actually leave the house again which was more exciting and good than the unwanted attention was bad. If you have the opportunity to, it might be worth doing things which are fun for you and things that are now easier/ possible because of your new chair – if nothing else I find I notice people staring less when I’m having a good time.
I really hope it works out for you!

When I met Lewis it was extraordinary! Something he asked me about which not many people do was my @permobil wheelchair. Which was very refreshing; Something so integral to my freedom.
It was great to talk about something that was a part of me, but also driving in a sense which is what he does best. maxwellmnight
