George is in visiting from Virginia and we’re celebrating his birthday a few days late with steaks all around: T-bones for the boys and fillet mignon for mom and me. Sides of baked potatoes and shoepeg white corn on the cob. None of us could eat it all. Go plates all round. Now I’m watching Freedom Writers while putting food up, and mom insists on washing up so she can get up to a clean kitchen. And the boys are out on the front porch catching up. #perlesbham Bought myself a bouquet of brilliant yellow tulips on my way home from running errands. Began by returning a dozen DVDs to library. Since they’re still quarantining all returns, I snapped a pic in lieu of receipt. Then Whole Foods which now takes Amazon returns - so much better than shipping mistakes back. And of course I cruised the store. Then the Galleria for batteries for my two watches. Sweet old guy has a kiosk and does it for a flat $12 while you wait (up from $10). He’s by the food court. And. As I was so close to mom’s I picked up some fresh cooked chicken teriyaki for us to share a late lunch/early dinner. Watered her birds and a strange plant in her back yard. #perleswalkabout The danger for a world-class procrastinator is having a storeroom just off the kitchen. I tend to let things pile up there. But I’m determined to empty it today. So, I left for a short #walkabout after three trips up n down the double flight of back stairs. Took a moment to shoot the view of my apartment backdoor between trips to the alley recycle bucket behind the garage. Now sipping coffee and getting ready for CBS Sunday morning. #perlesaerie Don’t have a caldron, so put my next largest pot to simmer on the gas stove. As it just came to a boil, I added a heaping spoon of finely ground hibiscus (from @goldentemplehealthfoods) 🌺, a bay leaf 🍃 I’d pierced many times w my nail, a sprig of rosemary and a crushed cinnamon stick, covered (as I was taught by herbalist Antonia Viteri saving all the herbs essence) and turned off the fire. It steeps to a brilliant red and needs no sweetening of any kind. Haven’t sat at my messy desk in over a month, but today I’ll be at my Dell til late afternoon. #perlesaerie It’s raining and I’ve the balcony door and a few windows open to the night. The steady din of rain against my bedroom window is a song, one of many that I love. There is no sound so soothing as rain. The steady drops’ rill on the window’s sill sing to me. It is best at night before sleep comes and even better at dawn as sleep leaves. This is when the mad dash of our lives is still. The tide of distant traffic has ebbed or yet to flow. The weather persons assure me, the rain will last through the night and I hope they are right. I could wish for no sweeter lullaby. #perlesaerie One of my favorite ginger cookies are these in the large red tin that shows up every year at @worldmarket now back in my pantry shelf. Tins from past years now hold other things: @triscuit crackers, tea bags... Made in Sweden - hence the minimal ingredient list (8). They last me quite awhile as they’re 180 wafer thin cookies to a tin. My dessert is often 2-4 dunked in red wine.
