Blue Supermoon
A supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that nearly coincides with perigee—the closest that the Moon comes to the Earth in its elliptic orbit—resulting in a slightly larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as viewed from Earth.
The technical name is a perigee syzygy (of the Earth–Moon–Sun system) or a full (or new) Moon around perigee. Because the term supermoon is astrological in origin, it has no precise astronomical definition.

When is the next full Moon? Your lunar astronomy guide
A full Moon is one of the easiest astronomical events to see. You don’t need any special equipment to view the Moon, or a star chart to find it – all you need to do is look up on the right night. On top of that, it’s also easily one of the most stunning objects in the night sky.

What is the lunar cycle?
The Moon appears to change shape throughout the lunar cycle:
New Moon
Waxing crescent Moon
First Quarter
Waxing gibbous Moon
Full Moon
Waning gibbous Moon
Third quarter
Waning crescent Moon
New Moon again.
We only see the Moon because it reflects light from the Sun. As it orbits the Earth, the amount of light it can reflect back at us changes. When the Moon goes between the Sun and the Earth, no light can reflect back at us so there is a new Moon.
When the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, a full Moon occurs as the Moon’s face is fully illuminated by the Sun. During the times in between, only parts of the Moon can reflect light back to Earth.
The lunar cycle © Getty images
If the Moon orbited Earth in the same plane as Earth orbits the Sun, then the Moon would block out light from the Sun every time there was a new Moon.
But this doesn’t happen because the Moon orbits at an angle of around 5 degrees compared to Earth’s orbit of the Sun. When the Moon passes through Earth’s plane of orbit and the three bodies – Earth, Moon and Sun line up.
More like this
This is called a syzygy. When a syzygy happens during a new Moon we have a solar eclipse, and a syzygy during a full Moon creates a lunar eclipse.
How can I see a Supermoon?
The Moon doesn’t orbit Earth in a circle – it has an elliptical orbit. This means the distance between the Earth and the Moon varies. The closest point in the orbit is called perigee and the furthest away point is apogee.
When a full Moon happens at the same time the Moon is closest to the Earth – less than 360,000km (223,694 miles) away – this is a supermoon. The next supermoon will be on 28 March 2021.
How can I photograph the moon at night?
To capture the Moon with your phone, you might need to play around with your camera settings. Don’t use a flash, turn down the ISO and set your focus to 100.
If you are unsure how to make these changes, download a night photography app (such as NightCap – available on the App Store, £2.99) which will allow you greater control over the camera settings than your usual camera app.
The Moon is a great target to photograph with a DSLR © Getty images
If you’re using a digital camera, start with an aperture of f/11 to f/16 and a shutter speed of between 1/60th and 1/125th of a second. A tripod will help keep your camera still and reduce any shaking from the low light conditions when you need to keep the shutter open a little longer.
To get the best pictures of the Moon you need to work out your shot, making sure you can frame the Moon depending on the scenery around you. To plan where you can see the Moon, or anything in the night sky, there is plenty of software available (like the Moon Locator app – available on Android devices, free).
To find more software worthy of your home screen, check out our guide to the best astronomy apps.
Does the Moon rotate?
Yes, the Moon is rotating. But it is tidally locked, which means it rotates in sync with its orbit of the Earth, so for every orbit of the Earth it completes one rotation.
This means as it travels around our planet, the same side faces us the whole time. This is why we have the term ‘dark side of the Moon’, for the side we never see. In reality, that side of the Moon gets just as much sunlight as the side we see, so the correct term is the ‘far side of the Moon’.
What is a Blood Moon and how can I see it?
“During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon turns a red colour because Earth’s atmosphere scatters blue light away and only the red gets through. This is called a Blood Moon,” says Abigail Beall.
The next total lunar eclipse visible from the UK will be on 14 March 2025 (UK, Europe, Africa, Americas, east Asia, Australia).
We have a little while to wait for the next Blood Moon; below are the dates for the next total lunar eclipse that will give us a Blood Moon:
14 March 2025: UK, Europe, Africa, America, east Asia, Australia
7 September 2025: UK, Europe, Asia, Australia
3 March 2026: America, Asia, Australia
31 December 2028: UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, western US and Canada

The Fish Moon
The Full Moon this month falls on April 26th-27th. It occurs in the sign of Scorpio. It is a Perigee-Syzygy (Super Moon).
Get your personalized Full Moon Tarot Reading -- click here.
Scorpio is the sign of evolution and transformation. The moon in this sign will amplify your emotions in a controlled manner which allows you to analyze them and learn about how to manage them. You will likely feel very deep--the shallows will no longer satisfy. The Scorpion stings you with a yearning for human connection on a level which you have not achieved in some time.
It is Spring! Things are blooming, I am sneezing, there are birds absolutely everywhere... how exciting. For centuries, this full moon has marked the final melting of the last frost, signaled the flowing of thawed rivers, and celebrated the pops of color and life that have returned to the Earth. Violets, Crocuses, Hyacinth, Daffodils, and Forsythia are exploding from lush, green, newborn grass and the Dandelions are beginning to join them.
The seeds I planted at Ostara are thriving now. I've moved them from inside the house to my front porch and back inside again... We got snow the other day. Michigan. Gotta love her. Anyhow, it seems that the last frost is over and I'm safe to move the babies back out to the front porch for a week before Beltane arrives and I must move them outdoors into the garden! But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Before we can rejoice beside the Bel Fire, we must... clean.
My yard is !a mess! and the garden beds need weeding before I can hope to grow any flowers in them. There are some branches in the yard and by the street that need to be trimmed (an excuse to use my machete for the first time this year). And I need to prepare a plot to plant my veggie garden! Not to mention finishing up the closets, cupboards, corners, and cabinets that still need to be cleaned and organize inside the house.
Spring cleaning needs to happen in your sacred space, too. Throw out old herbs, bury/burn old spell materials, clean out jars for collecting new items... Then go on a nice long walk through the woods to replenish your stock! Gather rainwater and leave it under the beams of this powerful full moon to make a fresh batch of moon water. Maybe you have a basket of tarot decks that needs to be organized or a book full of notes and spells to sort through or a pouch of rocks to clean. You might have books to tidy on shelves or burn marks on your altar table to sand off. Whatever it is, now is the best time to do it.
Use this moon's energy in your magic and you're sure to see success. Money magic and intention setting spells will be particularly potent when cast under this moon. A ritual for drawing down the moon would prove beneficial as well. Whatever you decide to do, have trust in your magic and in the moon. Release your fears. Trust in the flow of the universe--it has some ideas for you.

Supermoon on June 14th!
Since there's a supermoon tomorrow, I decided to make a bit of research on what they are and how they affect us
What is a Supermoon?
So, without going in scientific details, a supermoon is a full or new moon that looks bigger, since it's ''near perigee'' (perigee is the point in the moon's orbit where it is the closest to Earth!). Another name for a supermoon is ''perigee syzygy''. I could talk about it for days, but Bob Berman does it better than me in an article.
What to do during a Supermoon?
Well, first off, since the moon is closer to Earth, we feel more its energy and its effects. That means that we might have mood swings, our emotions might be more intense and we might even have clearer or weirder dreams.
But since its energy and effects are stronger, that also means it's an awesome time for spells! Full moons are great to let go of things that no longer serve us. It's also a great time to look inside and work on ourselves.
So spells to let go, relaxation, meditation and dream analysis are things we should do (and that I will personally do! That is, without mentionning I will do a little tarot spead ;)).
Amethyst, moonstone and labradorite are three crystals we should keep with us during the Supermoon, since it help to have a better intuiton!
With that being said, I wish a very nice Supermoon to all witches out there! Take some time for yourself and relax <3

We’ve had to wait all year, but 2017’s first and only visible supermoon is Sunday night.
The “supermoon” is a phenomenon scientists call “perigee syzygy” and occurs when the moon is closest to Earth, near the horizon and appears larger and brighter than other full moons.
Like all phases of the Earth’s moon, the supermoon is safe to view with the naked eye.
Peak viewing time is 3:45 a.m. on Monday, but the moon will still appear larger than normal when it’s close to the horizon at sunset on Sunday and again at sunrise on Monday, according to NASA. The moon will rise at 5:46 p.m. on Sunday over the eastern horizon.
Sunday night is expected to be mostly clear across much of North Carolina with a calm wind and a low around 40 degrees in the central part of the state.
If you can’t go outside, or would rather stay warm indoors, the Virtual Telescope Project will provide a video of the moon.
NASA staff photographer Bill Ingalls provided some recommendations for photographing the supermoon:
“Don't make the mistake of photographing the moon by itself with no reference to anything,” he said. ”'I've certainly done it myself, but everyone will get that shot. Instead, think of how to make the image creative — that means tying it into some land-based object. It can be a local landmark or anything to give your photo a sense of place.”
And if you’re trying to get a shot with your smartphone (as most people probably will), Ingalls has that covered, too.
“Tap the screen and hold your finger on the object (in this case, the moon) to lock the focus,” Ingalls told NASA. “Then slide your finger up or down to darken or lighten the exposure.”
This is technically the fourth supermoon of the year, according to National Geographic, but it’s the only one visible since the previous three coincided with new moons, when the moon was darkened.
This supermoon, however, should appear about 7 percent larger and 16 percent brighter.
If you miss the December supermoon, there will be two more in January – one on Jan. 2 and another on Jan 31 – a blue supermoons, since a “blue moon” is the second full moon in a month.
With Supermaoon comes SuperWerewolves!

One of the interesting side effects of reading Dracula Daily as someone also currently rewatching season 5 of Teen Wolf is that my brain overrides the slur word with the Dread Doctor chant of perigee-syzygy (supermoon)
(RIP to me if the root of it *is* the slur word)

In honor of reaching one hundred followers, we’re excited to announce Meta May Mondays! Throughout the month of May, we’re encouraging people to post meta. We have some themes suggested for each Monday in May below, but all meta that fits our guidelines is welcome! Generally, we are looking for canon-compliant meta based on good faith analysis of the show, of at least 100 words.
If you’d like to play, remember to tag your post with #twmetamay or mention us @teenwolf-meta so we can reblog your work!
Suggested Themes:
May 2: Moon. We start with the show’s true star. Tell us your thoughts on the perigee syzygy, the moon’s effect on werewolves, how it shifts over the show, your favorite moon or moon-titled episode, the show’s odd lack of moons when we might expect them. Moon magic today!
May 9: Metaphor. Tell us about your favorite metaphor from the show. Metaphor meta mania!
May 16: Monster. Which monster is your favorite? What lore have you found about Teen Wolf’s monsters? What does it mean to be a monster? Make your monster meta!
May 23: Memory. Pre-canon memories, the long shadow cast by memories, damnatio memoriae, memory and werewolf claws. Many memory metas are welcome!
May 30: McCall. Scott, Melissa, Rafael, the pack, its members, and its symbol. More McCall meta!
