Effective Pericoronitis Treatment at Home – World of Dentistry
Experiencing pain or swelling near an emerging wisdom tooth? You might have pericoronitis, a common dental condition caused by inflammation or infection in the gum tissue surrounding a partially erupted tooth. While professional treatment is crucial for severe cases, several home remedies can help manage symptoms and provide relief. This article explores the best pericoronitis treatment at home to ease discomfort and promote healing.
Understanding Pericoronitis
Pericoronitis occurs when a partially erupted tooth creates a gum flap that traps food particles and bacteria, leading to irritation, swelling, and infection. Wisdom teeth are most commonly affected due to limited space in the mouth.
Causes and Risk Factors
Factors that contribute to pericoronitis include:
Bacterial accumulation: Trapped food particles promote bacterial growth.
Partially erupted teeth: These can create pressure on surrounding gums.
Poor oral hygiene: Inadequate cleaning can lead to infection.
Limited jaw space: Insufficient room for wisdom teeth can cause impaction.
Symptoms of Pericoronitis
If you have pericoronitis, you may experience:
Gum pain and swelling around the affected tooth
Redness and tenderness in the area
Bad breath or an unpleasant taste
Difficulty opening the mouth (trismus)
Pus discharge in severe cases
If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s important to seek professional dental care.
Best Pericoronitis Treatment at Home
If you suspect pericoronitis, try these effective home treatments to alleviate pain and inflammation before visiting a dentist:
1. Saltwater Rinse
Mix a teaspoon of salt in warm water and rinse for 30 seconds.
Reduces bacteria and inflammation.
Repeat 2–3 times daily.
2. Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse
Dilute equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water.
Swish for 30 seconds, then spit out.
Use once daily to kill bacteria, but avoid excessive use.
3. Cold Compress
Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the affected area for 10–15 minutes.
Helps reduce swelling and numb pain.
4. Clove Oil
Apply a small amount to a cotton swab and dab onto inflamed gums.
Provides natural antibacterial and pain-relieving effects.
5. Turmeric Paste
Mix turmeric powder with water to form a paste.
Apply to swollen gums for 5–10 minutes before rinsing.
Offers anti-inflammatory benefits.
Over-the-Counter Options
Ibuprofen or acetaminophen to relieve pain and inflammation.
Antibacterial mouthwash to eliminate bacteria and soothe irritation.
When to Visit a Dentist
If pericoronitis treatment at home does not alleviate symptoms within a few days, or if pain, swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing occurs, consult a dentist. Professional treatments include:
Deep cleaning to remove trapped bacteria and debris.
Antibiotics for severe infections.
Operculectomy (removal of gum tissue) to prevent recurrence.
Tooth extraction if pericoronitis is recurrent.
Preventing Pericoronitis
Brush and floss daily, paying extra attention to partially erupted teeth.
Use antibacterial mouthwash to minimize bacteria buildup.
Avoid hard or sticky foods that may irritate the gums.
Schedule regular dental check-ups for early detection and treatment.
Conclusion
Pericoronitis can be painful, but the right pericoronitis treatment at home can provide temporary relief. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, professional dental care is essential. For expert guidance and treatment, visit World of Dentistry to keep your oral health in top condition.

An Overview of the Function of Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth, the last set of adult molars erupting between ages 17 and 26, can play a valuable role in a healthy smile. They can also carry some risks that require removal.
Ideally, wisdom teeth erupt fully and function normally. However, many people experience impacted wisdom teeth, which become unable to erupt due to a lack of space in the upper or lower jaw. Untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can lead to various problems, such as cavities or infection.
Once essential for mastication, wisdom teeth are no longer crucial for chewing, due to good oral hygiene, fluoridated water, and modern food preparation. Today, healthcare providers consider them vestigial organs. Located behind the second molars in the back of the mouth, some people have 4 or more additional wisdom teeth however other people may not develop all or any wisdom teeth. Dental professionals consider both scenarios normal variations.
While some wisdom teeth erupt without issue, many become impacted due to limited jaw space. This restricted space can cause them to grow abnormally, either angled towards other teeth, trapped within the jawbone, or partially erupted through the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth may not always cause problems, but complications can arise. Some people might experience red or swollen gums around the wisdom teeth, tenderness or bleeding gums, jaw pain or discomfort, facial swelling, difficulty opening the mouth fully, bad breath, or an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
Leaving impacted wisdom teeth untreated can cause several problems. The pressure they exert can push and misalign the neighboring second molars, potentially leading to infection in that area. Additionally, the follicles surrounding wisdom teeth can potentially form into cysts. These cysts can irritate and inflame the surrounding jawbone, teeth, and nerves. In rare instances, even tumors can develop within these cysts, although they're usually noncancerous.
Partially erupted wisdom teeth are more challenging to clean effectively, making them more susceptible to cavities. Additionally, the space between the gum and a partially erupted tooth can trap particles of food and bacteria, increasing the risk of developing pericoronitis, a painful inflammatory gum condition.
When wisdom teeth become impacted and cause complications, removal is often the recommended course of action. An oral surgeon removes wisdom teeth under local anesthesia or sedation in an office setting. In some cases, patients may require general anesthesia. Depending on the degree of impaction, the surgeon may need to make an incision in the gum tissue and potentially remove some bone to access the wisdom tooth for extraction.
After the removal procedure, you can expect bleeding for several hours. Doctors recommend using a gauze pad to control the bleeding. Facial swelling around the extraction site is common, but applying a cold compress wrapped in a cloth for the first 24 hours can minimize it. Pain medication can help manage discomfort, so an oral surgeon might prescribe stronger medication if necessary.
Initially, surgeons recommend a soft diet until the numbness from the local anesthesia wears off, followed by no hard or crunchy foods for several days after the procedure. Continue brushing the teeth, but avoid the area near the extraction site for the first 24 hours. After that, gentle brushing can resume. Warm, salt water rinses, or a prescription mouthwashe maybe recommended. Depending on the type of sutures used, they may resorb naturally or may require removal by your after a week or two of healing

How Do I Get Rid Of Bad Breath?
Bad breath (the medical term for which is halitosis) is an embarrassing but incredibly common oral health problem. In fact, it is estimated that bad breath impacts more than 50% of the general population around the globe. Yet many people who suffer from halitosis are completely unaware of their condition until it’s pointed out by someone else, often leading to uncomfortable social exchanges.
There are an immense variety of products on the market that promise to eliminate bad breath: Everything from mouthwashes to chewing gum, breath mints, and dissolving tongue strips. In most cases, however, these products only provide a temporary solution. Foul smelling breath can be caused by a number of underlying conditions; only by treating the root cause can chronic halitosis be stopped for good.
Experiencing a serious case of bad breath that won’t go away despite your best efforts?
See us at Evershine Dental Clinic as soon as possible to rule out more serious oral health issues.
What Causes Bad Breath?
We all know that bad breath can develop if you don’t brush your teeth – but do you know what’s happening on a molecular level? Bad breath takes place when volatile compounds are formed and released orally, whether or not those compounds originated in the mouth. These volatile substances may contain sulfur- or nitrogen-containing compounds, amines, alcohols, or ketones, all of which have a particular molecular structure that your brain registers as an unpleasant smell.
The majority (90 percent) of halitosis cases originate in the mouth; the other 10 percent may be caused by gastrointestinal, respiratory, or other non-oral diseases. If you experience bad breath only on occasion, it’s probably nothing to be concerned about: Most likely, it has to do with something you ate, a lapse in brushing or flossing, or simply a lack of flowing saliva (which plays a major role in ‘morning breath’). Luckily, adhering to proper dental hygiene habits is typically sufficient for combatting the average case of halitosis.
The following are some of the most common causes of bad breath:
Poor Oral Hygiene: If teeth are not brushed and flossed regularly, particles of food will tend to remain lodged between them. As these particles begin to decay, they release molecular compounds that lead to bad breath. In addition, microbial deposits that build up on the tongue function as bacteria-rich harbors; this is another common source of unpleasant-smelling breath. As long as good oral hygiene is put into practice – including brushing or scraping the tongue and regular flossing – these instances of halitosis will be reduced.
Certain Foods: Foods such as garlic, onions, pickles, radish, and certain spices and condiments contain odor-causing compounds. These compounds are absorbed into the bloodstream and later released when exhaled. Halitosis caused by food is temporary, typically lasting only a few hours.
Dental Problems: Certain dental problems can also lead to bad breath. Gingivitis, periodontal disease, cavities, dry socket, oral ulceration, and pericoronitis are possible causes. If you notice inflammation of your gums or are experiencing any tooth pain or pain when chewing along with bad breath, visit Evershine Dental Clinic in Mumbai to address any possible dental conditions.
Tobacco and Alcohol: Tobacco and alcohol both influence bad breath by introducing volatile compounds into the bloodstream. In addition, tobacco products tend to dry out the mouth, making bad breath even worse – since saliva is what keeps your mouth flushed and clear of residual food particles, insufficient saliva production has a considerable impact on halitosis.
Dry Mouth: Caused by certain medications, health conditions, or excessive alcohol, tobacco, or caffeine consumption, dry mouth is indicated by a decrease in natural saliva production. As mentioned, saliva production is incredibly important to oral health: It keeps your mouth clear of debris and provides disease-fighting substances that help to ward off cavities and other infections. A lack of saliva means more food particles will decay in the mouth and the likelihood of other dental issues is increased, thereby increasing the risk for bad breath. This is another reason why many individuals experience ‘morning breath’ – simply because dry mouth can occur overnight due to the lack of hydration and saliva production during sleep.
Non-Oral Health Conditions
It is possible for bad breath to be caused by an associated health condition that plays a role in the release of volatile molecules on the breath. Dieting, snoring, stress, age, and hormonal changes – including menstruation – can also impact your breath.
The following diseases, among others not listed here, have been known to cause or worsen halitosis:
Respiratory tract infection
Tonsillitis
Sinusitis
Gastrointestinal disease
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Hepatic failure
Renal (kidney) failure
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Leukemia
Acute fever
How Can I Prevent or Reduce Bad Breath?
The majority of halitosis cases are easy to prevent. Implementing healthy dental habits, avoiding odor-causing foods, and regularly visiting Evershine Dental Clinic for professional cleanings and examinations will all help keep your breath fresh. However, if bad breath persists despite these preventative measures - and underlying health problems and diseases have been ruled out - there are a few additional measures you can take to mitigate the problem:
Use Approved Oral Hygiene Products: When purchasing toothpaste, mouthwash, and other oral health products, use fluoride-containing toothpaste to brush at least twice per day; floss at least once per day or use an interdental cleaner to remove food particles from between teeth.
Chew Sugar-Free Gum: Look for sugar-free chewing gum to mask bad breath and stimulate saliva production. However, avoid sugary mints or sugar-containing gum, which can increase the risk for tooth decay.
Try Tongue Scraping: Don’t just use a toothbrush to clean your tongue. A specially-designed tongue scraper that removes the coating of bacteria accumulated on the tongue can reduce bad breath-inducing sulfur compounds by up to 75 percent. Toothbrush bristles, on the other hand, only reduce these compounds 45 percent according to a comparative clinical trial.
Keep Dentures, Retainers, and Mouthguards Clean: If you wear dentures or have a bridge, clean the device thoroughly at least once a day – and make sure to remove it before going to sleep. Use the same cleaning protocol for dental retainers and mouth guards, both of which can harbor odor-inducing organisms and bacteria.
Stay Hydrated: The best way to avoid dry mouth and keep saliva flowing is by staying hydrated throughout the day. Drink plenty of water and try to cut back on caffeine and alcohol, both of which can be dehydrating. Remember to consume a large glass of water before bed to help prevent morning breath.
Replace Your Toothbrush: When your toothbrush starts to get frayed or the bristles appear worn, it's time to get a new toothbrush. An old toothbrush won’t do a sufficient job in keeping teeth clean and clear of debris. Evershine Dental Clinic Mumbai recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months.
Final Thoughts
Bad breath happens. Don't stress! While it may be humiliating, most cases of halitosis can be remedied with simple changes to your lifestyle and oral health routine. However, if the problem persists or is accompanied by other symptoms of dental disease, it is recommended you visit a Evershine Dental Clinic Ghatkopar, Mumbai as soon as possible to rule out more serious conditions.

I'm moderately certain that I have developed a dental abscess/pericoronitis given the intense throbbing pain and inability to open my mouth more than half an inch. I'm just laying here staring at the ceiling because I'm so fucking tired of all the dental manifestations of EDS. My teeth look perfectly fine from the outside. I constantly get complimented on my smile. But go past the front and they're sensitive and brittle with too deep crevices, prone to cavities no matter how well I care for them. I had a molar crumble when I bit into a piece of cookie cake last year which resulted in a root canal and I still don't think I've mentally recovered. It took 7 shots to dull the pain. It seems so terribly unfair that not only does this condition leave you in constant chronic pain, but it simultaneously makes any typical pain relief either less or completely ineffective. It's so unfair that medical procedures are so expensive when being disabled typically means you have no source of income. I have $147 in my bank account and I needed 9 fillings as of 3 years ago, and that was when I had the energy to fastidiously clean them. Who knows how absolutely fucked they are now. I've started keeping a bottle of mouthwash by my bed. I'm hoping that will be enough to keep the infection at bay until I can go to urgent care. The problem won't be fixed until I can see a dentist, but the nearest emergency appointment from a dentist who accepts my insurance is July 5th, 2 months from now. I'm pretty sure if I waited until then to take action, I'd die of sepsis. So here's to hoping that urgent care antibiotics can tide me over until then.

For 4 weeks my inflamed gums drove me crazy, prompting me to even go on a mission to Walmart, which I had not been in for a year. March of last year people mobbed Walmart, confused by barriers and trying not to bump into one another. That was too much for me, on top of fear of the virus. I bought a Waterpik to clean around the problem wisdom tooth. I know the tooth itself wasn’t rotted or infected so I had to keep cleaning and gargling to deal with the infected gum. The alternate? The dentist would just clean it as well, cost me money, and advise either surgery to cut the gum away, or surgery to remove the tooth.
These are non-invasive procedures that I am not particularly phobic of as I have already had a tooth pulled (the numbing didn’t fully work and I screamed and screamed), but I worry about bigger things. I can’t heal right, which is why it just took a month, twice the normal healing time for pericoronitis, for my problem to start to go away. And even as my mouth started to heal, the inflammation spread upward into my ear, then in my jaw and all my glands. I did have my doctor look at all of it to make sure I was in the clear of any other infections.
So for a month I’ve been in pain, loss of appetite and lack of taste in my mouth when not actually eating. I have turned into a bottle of peroxide, it’s all I can fucking taste (the specialized mouthwashes are based on it). Having received the stimulus check I bought a mess of Chinese food from my favorite small business, it’s been the only thing I’ve wanted to eat. Everything else looks like shit, even bacon. I’ve cooked other things which I will post later but I have no cravings except pu pu platters. I could live on them, but alas, got to budget so I’m done with that. I cooked the sealed bacon I bought 2 weeks ago yesterday and promptly wanted to throw it up.
On top of everything my disease naturally wanted to kick in so I started medicating for that. I tried a recommended double dose which made me sink mentally, as a side effect of the med is agitation and depression. So I don’t want to eat, my face hurts, and on top of it all my nose is crusted. Cool, take a decongestant. Somewhere between disease, immune, and already having infections, that made my nose almost bleed to death. So now I’ve had blood in my nose for over a week and I want to claw at it. No normal snot just blood, stopped up and then it drips back down into my throat so I hack the blood back up. I’ve been miserable.

Wisdom of Wisdom Teeth - Ways to avoid Wisdom teeth extractions
New Post has been published on https://www.sonriadentalclinic.co.uk/wisdom-of-wisdom-teeth-avoid-wisdom-teeth-extractions/
Wisdom of Wisdom Teeth - Ways to avoid Wisdom teeth extractions
As we want you to avoid Wisdom teeth extractions in the future, here is some advice to take care of them.
Wisdom teeth (or third molars) are the last set of teeth that come through on each side of the upper and lower jaws. There are usually four wisdom teeth. They emerge during the late teens or twenties.
Sometimes, there is insufficient space for the wisdom teeth to come out into their normal position. This means that they may only come through partially (partial eruption) or not emerge at all (impacted). When this happens, your wisdom tooth may be painful.
What causes wisdom teeth pain?
Having impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth may cause no problems at all. Commonly, however, impaction can make effective oral hygiene around the area very difficult leading to the build-up of food and bacteria. This can lead to several complications: • Pain and discomfort • Decay of the wisdom tooth • An incorrectly angled wisdom tooth promotes food packing leading to deterioration of the molar in front of the wisdom tooth • Gum inflammation and soreness (pericoronitis)
Pericoronitis
A part of your gum line naturally breaches when a wisdom tooth finally breaks through the skin, but often just partially because it doesn’t have enough room to grow. Food particles can then become trapped by that flap of tissue, resulting in an infection in the gum surrounding the wisdom tooth. This is known as pericoronitis. It has the following symptoms: • Painful or swollen gum tissue around the wisdom tooth. • A foul smell or taste in your mouth • Fever or frequent chills • Swollen lymph nodes • Spasms in the jaw muscles (trismus)
Consult your dentist if you experience any or all of the above.
Treatment
Once pericoronitis has been diagnosed, there are three main possibilities: The entire tooth emerges naturally, and the infection will resolve itself, the gum flap is removed, or the tooth itself is extracted. Your dentist will clean the area around and under the gum to remove food particles and show you how to do the same. He or she will also be able to determine if removing the wisdom tooth is the best (or only) course of action.
Treatment options for impacted Wisdom Teeth
Impacted teeth require no treatment if they are healthy and are causing no problems. Simple local measures can sometimes be the only required treatment. These include improved oral hygiene and the use of antiseptic mouthwash. Some impacted teeth will need removal. However, wisdom teeth extractions are not without risk. Their removal is, therefore, only recommended if advised by your dentist.
Treating wisdom teeth pain at home
Impacted wisdom teeth may cause pain, aches, and tenderness. Ultimately, wisdom teeth extractions can help resolve these problems. In the meantime, there are several over-the-counter medical treatments and natural home remedies available to help you avoid wisdom teeth extractions.
1. Numbing gel
A numbing dental gel may help reduce feeling in the gums and dull the pain. These gels are available over the counter and contain the active ingredient benzocaine.
Most dental gels can be applied directly to the affected gums throughout the day. However, it is essential for a person to follow the instructions included in the product. Also, it is possible to be allergic to benzocaine.
2. Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is an over-the-counter pain relief medication that helps reduce inflammation. Taking the recommended dose on the packet may help relieve discomfort. It can also reduce inflammation of the gums associated with wisdom teeth development.
3. Ice pack
Applying an ice pack to the jaw can help reduce inflammation, which in turn may relieve pain. Using ice can also have a numbing effect. A person can try holding an ice pack with a tea towel around it against their jaw for up to 15 minutes. The ice pack can be applied off and on with 15-minute breaks until the pain has subsided.
4. Salt water rinse
Salt water has natural disinfectant properties. Rinsing the mouth with salt water several times a day may help to reduce symptoms such as pain. To make the salt-water rinse, a person can dissolve one or two tablespoons of salt into a glass of freshly boiled water. When the water has cooled slightly, it can be swirled around the mouth for several minutes, and then spat out. This can be done two or three times a day, or until the pain starts to reduce.
5. Cloves
A 2006 study showed that the numbing effect of cloves could help with the pain of wisdom teeth. To try this home remedy, a person can use a whole clove or clove oil.
If using a whole clove they should: • Place the clove over the wisdom tooth that is causing pain • Hold it in place by closing their jaw, but without chewing • Leave it there until the pain reduces and then spit it out
To try this remedy using clove oil, a person can: • Put a few drops of clove oil on a ball of cotton wool • Put the cotton wool on the wisdom tooth that is causing pain • Hold the cotton wool in place until the pain reduces and then remove it.
6. Onion
A 2007 study found that onions have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. These advantages of onions mean they can help reduce swelling and fight bacterial infections.
To use onions as a home remedy, a person should: • Cut off a piece of onion • Chew the onion on the side of the mouth that has the pain • Keep chewing for a few minutes until pain reduces and then spit out the onion
This process allows the juice from the onion to go into the gum so that it can reduce inflammation and bacteria.
7. Tea bags
Tea bags should only be placed in the mouth when completely cooled.
A 2016 study found that tannins contained in tea bags have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This means tea bags may help reduce swelling and fight bacterial infections.
To use tea bags as a home remedy, a person should make a cup of tea and put the container in the fridge with the tea bag left in it. Once the brew is cold, the tea bag can be taken out and placed in the mouth where the pain is located.
How to avoid wisdom teeth pain
When the wisdom teeth are coming through, there are practical things we can do to make it less likely that their gums become infected. These actions include: • Practicing good oral hygiene: i.e. brushing teeth twice a day, flossing, and using mouthwash can help reduce the bacteria in the mouth that cause infections. • Drinking plenty of water: This helps to flush food and bacteria away from the teeth and gums. • Avoid sugary foods: Sweet foods can get stuck inside the broken gums, encouraging bacteria to grow.

Oh, how the internet makes it so easy to speak. We all work at different levels of patience and some of us aren’t meant to handle certain loads. A week ago my mouth got irritated and the next thing I know, whole thing is inflamed, luckily not blown up enough to get stuck between my teeth, which has happened before. Turns out I have pericoronitis, which is when your gums get bacteria in them, usually from your wisdom teeth. The worse side of my mouth sagging around the culprit, an impacted wisdom tooth.
My teeth are pretty rachet, being uneven and chipped, but the lower ones are severely crooked which led to the one wisdom growing into the side of my mouth. I had a similar issue in 2010. It sucks. So this week it got worse and worse and I ended up with swollen lymph nodes, a fever, and a sore jaw and ear because my ear on that side is messed up and partially deaf. That in itself has had fluid in it since I was a toddler and was very painful at points before I turned 20.
So, I bought a gallon of Advil and mentioned it to the people I talk to, namely my parents. I could barely chew or swallow, at one point my lower legs shook and my eyes almost rolled back into my head it hurt so bad. Dad says to me, “don’t eat then! Ha ha!” I (fortunately non-literally) bit my tongue. Then mom jokes I won’t be able to eat (she thinks I’m too fat). Bite the tongueeeeeee.
I tolerate such jibes from my parents because they’re great to me otherwise. You can’t teach old dogs new tricks. I worked throughout this whole time, really didn’t feel like it, but hey, got to work. Then snooze on and off after I clocked out. Felt like total shit all of this week. Sleeping helped, and even could have slept in an hour. NOPE. Spring is almost here and even with castrated cats, they get hyper and like to huff around. Cat wakes me up at 1 AM, 4 AM, 5 AM, and 6 AM EVERY DAY I AM SICK. Bro. Another common theme in male castrated cats is they still like to yowl. Cue 5 AM, Jester starts. This morning he ran up and down the stairs while doing it. He’s not sick. He’s just annoying. Literally annoying.
I don’t know how the fuck parents do it, when I adopted the other cat, Lester, a woman almost threw him at me after I answered the Craigslist “Free” ad. “I’m pregnant,” she said. “And all he does is meow, I can’t stand it.” Wait, what do babies do??
Lester meows a lot when you get the food out or when playing, otherwise he just lays around like the grey mop he resembles. Jester, on the other hand, has this PITCHY squeak. A loud sharp squeak that often ends with a whine. I love my cats but too much going on right here.
Finally the swelling went down a bit in my mouth, time to clean around the problem tooth! Not only did that hurt but as soon as I rubbed the small bristled dental tool around it, blood everywhere like a stuck pig. Thick rolls of blood, best way to describe. Then it burned, oh man. I have a trillion mouthwashes and other goodies but outside of the Advil, not much I can do. Lay awake miserable all that night. Today, do it again, less pain and even less swelling but tons more blood.
Mom made another joke about it today and I told her to stop. I sounded mean and I know she reads this but damnnnnnn I’ve had a fever and barely moved all week except to fucking work and IT HURTS DAMNIT. I could barely chew or swallow so ended up not being able to pee right and the runs on top of it all. NOT IN A GOOD MOOD.
Sometimes I push myself too hard and feel I don’t have the right to be bitter about life but just gonna straight up admit it this time: AIN’T IN A GOOD MOOD.
