3H DLC Book 5: Mysteries of the Calendar, Vol. 2

Since there are a lot of them, I’m just going to split them up into different posts and take my time shifting through them.

Summary- Contents

This particular book is about the past, most notably the old calendar way, which is basically just our calendar in real life. I guess this makes sense, as Foldan was once a technologically advanced world very similar to our own, with skyscrapers and dangerous weapons of war. I would hazard a guess that old, advanced Foldan was basically our world, just with magical origins. 

Regardless, the book is about the shift of the old calendar way to the new one the game presents. The old way was “months” and the new way is “moons”, although they basically serve the exact same function and only the naming function has changed. The prior way of naming (January, February, etc.) are lost, but they are aware that they were shortened to numbers such as 1 and 2. 

It goes on to state that this old method existed for an immeasurable amount of time, that they do not know when it started other than it can be traced back to the era of the gods, and that it simply brings up more questions. 

The old way was changed by Emperor Wilhelm when he founded the Adrestian Empire, abandoning the old calendar for the Imperial one. It would have caused a lot of unrest and confusion at the time, so the book proposes that may have been two reasons for the change. 

The Influence of the Church of Seiros

As the change to “moons” was meant to reflect the teachings of Seiros, as the moons are associated with the saints and tenets, it is likely that Wilhelm wanted to help legitimize the Church and help spread the beliefs.

If true, this mean that that since its inception, the Empire has had close ties with the Church of Seiros. 

It is also postulated that the goddess herself wished for the change to occur as voiced through Saint Seiros, and Wilhelm was simply implementing this change.  

Asserting Authority

Since the flow of time is important, creating a new method to track it is akin to claiming dominion over time itself. As such, the Empire took its newfound influence after its founding, and retroactively proclaimed its founding as Year 1. Amid the founding of Foldan, this move would have bolstered the Empire’s authority and heralded the start of a new era. 

Legitimacy of Document

As per Linhardt’s declaration that some of the documents may be fake or forgeries, it’s a good idea to question the legitimacy of all. It’s better to question what is real, and what isn’t, even if in the end it’s only guesses.

This document is pretty interesting, and if real somewhat telling. I can’t say we gleam a whole lot of new info we couldn’t have simply guessed from general critical thinking, but it’s nonetheless worth looking into. 

Firstly, what this tells us is that the “old way” is basically what the real world uses. As I mentioned before, this matches with ancient Foldan being a somewhat reflection of our real world now (just with the added touch of magic and real gods and dragons). “Months” were changed to “moons”, but the system basically works the same. The Empire simply added a theological meaning to each month, and a new name, as well as restarting the years to 1. Sort of like how we have BE and AD, in a way (just without Jesus). Perhaps it would be closer to compare it to the traditional Japanese calendar years, where they track the years based on the current Emperor and what how many years he has been in power. For example, in 2019, it was the Heisei Era year 63. When the emperor stepped down, the new emperor proclaimed the new period as Reiwa Year 1. 

What is particularly interesting is that, according to this document, it would seem historians tried to retrace the origins of this old calendar way. They were able to trace it back to the “era of the gods” and it simply created more questions. What these questions are, we don’t know. What this era means, we also don’t know. However, as per my look at the Slither document, it may be possible that the era of the gods refers to the time when Foldan was once modern. Unfortunately, this is purely speculation. All we know is, is that it was in use for a very long time, all the way up to when Wilhelm founded the Empire over 1000 years ago. 

This brings another thing to mind. If the calendar did indeed last since the time when the Slithers were still on the surface, than means the calendar system lasted through the destruction of the world and through the war between Sothis and the Slithers. This offers two explanations as to why this system survived:

Sothis and the Nabateans re-implemented the system so that the humans on the newly formed Foldan could keep track of time. 

Some humans survived on the surface through the war, and carried on the legacy of the old ways the best they could.

Both cases are possible, although we know that that the Nabateans did not reintroduce technology to the humans after Foldan was restored (and therefore may not have re-introduced the time system). The second scenario is quite likely, however, as Rhea herself implies that some may humans survived the Sothis war (unless she just means that the only survivors where the ones that went underground).

It is also possible that the “era of the gods” refers to when Sothis “restarted Foldan”, and the old system is actually not older than her war with the Slithers.

Regardless, the next part is very interesting: the reasons why Wilhelm implemented the new system. According to the game, the Empire was founded on the 1st of the Great Tree Moon (which is the equivalent of April). This is particularly interesting because in Japan, April 1st has an importance, as it marks the beginning of the government's fiscal year. It is also the date when Reiwa Year 1 began (calling back to the Japanese system of time keeping I mentioned before). 

In the lore of the game, the Great Tree Moon is the beginning of the new year and spring; people pray to realize their potential. 

Anyways, since the book is of a more recent print, the writers and historians involved have no clue as to why Wilhelm implemented a new time keeping system when it would have caused confusion and unrest during a time that was already difficult. However, they propose two possible theories:

Wilhelm did as the goddess desired, or did it to bolster the credibility of the Church and spread the beliefs

Wilhelm wanted to bolster the Empire’s new rule and secure authority. 

Both of these are valid theories, although they suggest different things. For former implies that Rhea used Wilhelm to validate her Church and basically enforce some soft power and influence over Foldan. Another possible conclusion we can draw is that Wilhelm wanted to help legitimize Rhea’s religion because they were allies working together to change the social-political climate of the continent, or maybe even help her establish a means to protect the dark truth from humans, as well as any surviving Nabateans. 

The latter theory suggests that it was actually Wilhelm who used the Church’s influence to bolster his own power, to solidify his new era and dominance over the people of Foldan. 

It is important to remember that the author of these books is unsure, and that these are simply theories. However, I would summarize that the truth is a little bit of both. Wilhelm and Rhea were allies, although how much Wilhelm knew of Rhea’s history is unclear. He probably wanted to solidify his power, and Rhea wanted to establish her Church. By changing the calendar system, they were able to accomplish both goals. 

Either way, it would be unfair to say that one theory is more true than the other when we lack any evidence to back such a claim up.

Now, how legitimate is this book? Well, it’s certainly not suspicious. It’s not terribly incriminating for any particular side, and reads pretty objectively. It lacks Seteth’s signature, so it is unlikely that it was removed from the library, but that doesn’t mean it’s not real. It would also go hand in hand with how past Foldan seems similar to the real world. 

Ultimately, the most important thing we can gleam from this document is that Wilhelm and possibly Rhea changed the calendar, but beyond that doesn’t really contextualize history that deeply. I would say this document has a high chance of being pretty legit overall.

Red Robin

Min and Max have been stuck in Arkham for far too long now and the White Rabbit is desperate! However... When she sees an opportunity to get them out has she gone too far?

A month... Nearly an entire month her beloved boys had been gone. Caroline went over the failed heist over and over and over in her head but still was unable to see a way things could have ended differently. Not without any of idea of what was going to happen beforehand.

Splitting up to throw pursuers off their trail and regrouping was a common tactic the three of them used. Caroline always got maps and diagrams of areas to discuss possible ways of escape and rendezvous points if things went badly.   

Batman had shown up. Fighting him was going poorly so they decided to flee. With her speed the White Rabbit had gotten away with zero issues but the twins had been apprehended. That had become obvious once far too much time had passed and neither of them had rejoined her. It also meant that the White Rabbit could do nothing to help them.

If they had been just your typical Gotham goons Min and Max likely wouldn’t have made the papers. However, they’d been well established as to whom they served, Caroline soon finding a small paragraph about them in the newspaper in the following days. ‘White Rabbit Henchmen Capture by Batman; Villainess still at Large!’ it read. 

Min and Max were indeed guilty of array of crimes but it was their connection to the White Rabbit that put them in Arkham. They weren’t insane, hatched schemes that threaten the lives of all of Gotham, or had anything about them that would make keeping them in a standard prison difficult.

No, it was simply the fact that unless they were kept in a facility with the highest security possible a small, but very angry, rabbit eared woman would bust them out in no time. That mistake wouldn’t be repeated twice. Now they were basically bait for the White Rabbit, she usually having an extremely difficult time busting them out of Arkham if she wasn’t inside with them.

As much as Caroline loved the twins she wished they were just a bit smarter. They weren’t stupid, per say, but were incapable of doing more than following orders. They’d likely already tried to break out of Arkham on their own but didn’t get very far. Caroline’s eye for detail and listening for anything amiss that they could use to their advantage was what usually did it. 

Now the White Rabbit was wandering around some of the more shady places of Gotham at night, hoping to find some aide. After being active for all these years she could move about the dangerous streets safely. Everyone around there was familiar with her. They saw those ears and costume and knew she was deadly even without her boys. It simply meant you got stabbed instead of shot if you messed with her. 

No one had any good info about Arkham to give her. She had no friends on the inside at the moment who owed her favors. Maybe she would need to let herself be captured and work from there. Being confined to those less than spacious cells was the worst part but otherwise Arkham actually wasn’t terrible; she’d get to be with her boys too.

The White Rabbit let out a deep sigh, her breath visible in the cool air. She rubbed her hands together before rubbing her shoulders; it was stupid of her to not think of a jacket. Rather... One of the twins would be putting one around her shoulders if they were there right now.

She missed them terribly. Her ears drooped. She was alone walking home at the moment so the White Rabbit could allow herself to let her sadness show. She used to like her peace and quiet but now it was deafening at home. She wanted to hear Max’s sweet laughter and Min’s chuckles. 

The White Rabbit’s ears shot up again as her head quickly turned to the side. Gunshots! She looked around, finding a fire escape. She went running towards it and jumped, landing more than halfway up it. She scrambled the rest of the way to the roof, running over to the side to see if she could see anything or would need to jump to the next building.

She scanned the ground and that’s when she saw three men running, occasionally shooting behind them. Were the police here? No! She soon saw Robin! But where was Batman...? 

Listening carefully to her surroundings the White Rabbit didn’t hear anything that could possibly be him. Although he was quite stealthy she could usually still hear footsteps, the fluttering of his cape, or a whooshing noise if he were sailing through the air. Robin seemed to be all by himself. 

A busy night for them, perhaps? Regardless, the White Rabbit was interested enough to follow and see how this would play out. She’d never seen how Robin handled things alone before. It might be a good learning experience to use to her advantage sometime.

Keeping to the rooftops the White Rabbit followed. The men busted down a door and fled into a business that had closed for the night. Robin of course was hot on their heels, the White Rabbit choosing to sit on the ledge as she watched to see what would happened. She dangled her legs and idly swung her feet slightly as she waited. Now that they’d corned themselves it should be easy for Robin to get the upper hand. It was just a shame they were out of her view now.

“PUT THAT PIN BACK IN, YOU IDIOT!” someone inside shouted loud enough for the White Rabbit to just barely hear. “YOU’LL KILL US ALL!”

Seconds later she saw a window on the second floor opening. A man was about to jump out when there was an explosion that sent him sailing through it and onto the pavement below. The White Rabbit cringed from seeing the impact; there was no way he would ever be getting up again from that. 

A fire breaking out made the White Rabbit look up again. The second floor was quickly being engulfed by flames. One of the crooks who’d been luckier fled the building in a now tattered suit but there was no sign of the third or Robin. 

It was then that the White Rabbit was struck with an idea. A devilishly clever idea. A wicked smirk cross her face as she found the nearest fire escape and hurried down it.

It would be dangerous but would be worth it if she succeeded. The White Rabbit dashed to the building and entered. The blast and ensuing fire was likely caused by a grenade. The White Rabbit was only grateful the stairs were still intact, she coughing slightly from the smoke that was starting to fill the area.

“Robin!” the White Rabbit called. “Robin, can you hear me?”

As she made it to the second floor landing she listened for anything that could be a person. Her heart started racing when she saw that the flames were quickly spreading. She could feel the impulse to freeze but these days she could easily ignore it and continue on in frightening situations. 

“Robin!” the White Rabbit tried again and listened. If he could make just the slightest sound she should be able to discern from the crackle of the flames and objects that were beginning to fall.

“Help... Me...” the third crook said weakly as he crawled out from one of the rooms. 

Not a chance. The White Rabbit acted like she didn’t even see the man, stepping over him as she entered the room he was trying to flee. This had to be the room the fire started in, the smoke so thick she took off her vest and held it over her mouth.

It was hard to see much of anything unless she was right next to it. If things got too bad she could always give up bolt out of there. The toe of her boot hit something and she heard a groan, prompting her to crouch down.

It was on the floor where she found her bird. 

Two weeks later...

The Bat Signal was lit at the Gotham Police Department. Batman responded timely, Commissioner Gordon informing him that a large envelop addressed to Batman had arrived. If a criminal wanted to send Batman a message without taking any risks this was typically their way of doing so.

Gordon knew better then to open anything himself. Even a thin, seemingly harmless envelop was enough for the craftiest of crooks to sneak in something hazardous. Batman opened it with care, discovering a note and pictures.

Salutations, Batman!

I have your Robin and, as you can see, have been playing with him a little. If you don’t wish for me to do something permanent you’ll follow my list of demands and meet me tomorrow night. I believe that should be sufficient time for my meager little requests. Just remember: A White Rabbit doesn’t like to wait!

As Batman read he clenched his jaw, the paper crinkling in his grasp. The last time he’d heard from Robin he was investigating a jewelry store theft. Then nothing. 

All this time Batman had been searching, looking answers, roughing up a few men whom he thought might know. Only to find out that the White Rabbit had him. Never would he have guessed she would have been involved.

Already furious, seeing the photos nearly drove Batman over the edge. There was Robin, whom he wasn’t sure was conscious or not, in a series of close-up photos. His skin showed obvious distress from cuts, gashes, open wounds, and another showed his arm laying in an angle that made it obvious that it was broken. 

The White Rabbit had been torturing him for two weeks before deciding to send him this?! Batman’s eyes carefully scanned the photos for any clue to Robin’s whereabouts but the White Rabbit had been careful to only show his sidekick’s body and nothing else where he was kept.

“Batman?” Commission Gordon question as the Dark Knight stormed back over to the window he used to come and go from, letting the letter and photos fall to the floor. “What’s wrong? What happened?”

With no time to waste Batman ignored the Commissioner and was out the window in moments. He fired his grappling hook and swung along the buildings until he landed where the Batmobile was parked. He floored it and began the drive to Arkham Asylum.

The sun was just beginning to go down when a small group of four guards made their way down the hallway. They broke off into groups of two, then going to the two cells that housed Min and Max. 

Max was listening to a radio his good behavior had earned him while Min was writing with crayon (the only writing utensils they were permitted), another plan to bust he and Max out of there. He quickly shoved it into his pillowcase when he heard the guards’ footsteps. 

The twins typically weren’t any trouble but the Arkham staff knew they could never be too careful. The twins were instructed get up and stand facing the wall with their hands against the back of their heads. Min and Max complied, confused as to what they could want with them. 

Cards were swiped in the reader next to each of the cells, the glass doors soon rising. The guards stepped in, told Min and Max to turn around, and threw a bag into each of their arms. They were then ordered to change clothes.

Min and Max were shocked to find they each had the same pink suit and pants, white dress shirt, and black bow tie inside. This was far from any prison attire they’d seen but Max heard a guard bark “Just hurry up!” at Min when he questioned it as they were forced to change in front the guards. Keeping his mouth shut, Max silently fastened the heart shaped buttons on his suit.

“Get moving!” was the next order. 

The twins exited their cells and walked side-by-side one another as they were escorted down the hall.

“What’s with these tacky suits?” Min whispered to Max.

“That’s what I’m worried about,” Max answered. 

It was hard for Min and Max to ignore the wolf whistles, kissy noises, and lewd comments from some of the other inmates to see them in such attire as they walked by. The twins tried to avoid eye contact at all costs. 

“I’d be up for some double penetration!” they heard one man shout at them. 

“You two are lookin’ awful pretty in pink...” from another. 

Min and Max were relieved when it finally stopped, their faces flushed. They only hoped it wouldn’t come up again during the inevitable next stay here. Who was the idiot responsible for this?! They deserved a good thrashing for it!

They weren’t asked to turn in any of the directions they expected at this hour. Not for any suddenly therapy or questioning.... They passed the doctors office... After narrowing it down they eventually realized they were being shepherded to the entrance of the Asylum.

Both twins gasped and refused to move any further when they saw Batman standing there. They dug their heels into the floor when the guards tried pushing or pulling them, only getting the twins to move a few more steps. 

“You’re coming with me,” Batman said harshly.

“No way!” Min cross his arms defiantly.

“You’re the one who wanted to put us in here so bad!” Max agreed with his brother’s apprehension. This already peculiar situation was only getting worse.

“I’m taking you to the White Rabbit,” Batman replied, the twins missing the thick resentment in his voice.

The twins perked up at once, knowing this wouldn’t be something Batman would lie about. “OK!” they said together, now hurrying to join Batman, their demeanor completely changing. So that’s why they’d been dressed like this; it all made sense now! What had their sweet Honey Bunny done to arrange for a release like this? 

Now fully compliant Min and Max didn’t protest when Batman handcuffed their hands behind their backs. They couldn’t blame him for wanting to use some extra caution. They then gladly took a seat in the back of the Batmobile.

“Our Miss white must’ve gotten you good for you to go along with this,” Min couldn’t help bragging smugly with a broad grin. He got as comfortable as he could in his seat. Getting chauffeured around by Batman like this out of Arkham was a rarity. He could only remember Harley getting taken out to help Batman hunt down the Joker.

“QUIET!” Batman ordered before gritting his teeth. 

Caroline was so quiet Batman wondered how she could even stand these two. They seemed to constantly be talking. If they didn’t quiet down he might very well give into temptation and turn on the knockout gas. The White Rabbit had never said they needed to be conscious.

The twins noticed Batman was going well above the speed to wherever he was taking him. Adding that to how agitated he was the twins began to think that the White Rabbit must have done something bad. Very, very bad. Something that was affecting Batman personally. 

Min and Max had never been apart from Caroline for this long. She must have gotten desperate, and they knew when their little rabbit got desperate she played dirty. It nearly made the two of them swoon. Their wonderful gal had gone this far just to get them out of Arkham. It was so romantic! 

Batman pulled into a vacant lot five minutes before the time the White Rabbit had designated. Not a single other soul was in sight. The twins looked around the area but didn’t see the White Rabbit anywhere either.

Batman pressed a button on the control panel, making the roof slide back. “Stay here!” he barked at the twins when he saw them starting to stand up.

“HEY!” both twins protested when Batman had the roof slide back into place the moment he got out of the car, it nearly hitting Min in the head.

Batman ignored Min and Max’s mutual protests as he walked away, surveying the area. Two minutes left. It was likely the White Rabbit would be right on time, but where she’d be coming from...

Soon enough he saw a tiny figure approaching him in the darkness. The White Rabbit had arrived at a leisurely pace. Her hands were in her vest’s pockets, ears were relaxed, and she had her ever so irksome condescending smirk on her face. She knew she had the upper hand in this.

But where was Robin?

Clenching his fists, Batman approached his much smaller adversary. The White Rabbit didn’t even flinch when he gripped her by the collar and lifted her up off the ground. From the Batmobile the twins were witnesses the entire thing, frantically trying to figure out how to escape and help her.

“We had a deal, White,” Batman said, his eyes staring daggers into hers.

“Oh?” the White Rabbit seemed amused, tilting her head to the side. “It’s not ‘Caroline’ anymore?” she noticed. Batman had always addressed her by her first name.

“You’re not that girl I rescued,” Batman answered, his face inches away from hers.

“So you finally noticed!” the White Rabbit replied with a grin. “You’re right. The WOMAN I am today is strong. I’ll never be like her again.”

“Where’s. Robin?” Batman asked firmly.

“Where’s. My. Boys?” the White Rabbit mimicked Batman the best she could.

“They’re in the car. Give me Robin. NOW!” Batman shouted, making the White Rabbit flinch.

“OK, OK. But put me down first.” Once Batman obliged the White Rabbit took a moment to adjust her vest before fishing around in one of her pockets. She took out a key and held it up. “He’s in that closed down hotel a few blocks from here. I’d rather not be present when you see what condition he’s in.”

Instead of snatching the key out of the White Rabbit’s grasp Batman seized her wrist instead. The White Rabbit grimaced and let out a yelp of pain when he bent it back. 

“I’ve taken it easy on you all of these years because I thought that you could redeem yourself,” Batman said, not budging an inch when the White Rabbit struggled to pull out of his grasp. “Next time I’ll treat you just like any other criminal.”

Batman still hadn’t forgotten about the time she’d broken him arm. He should have started coming down harder on her after that incident but he just couldn’t do it. Not when it still stuck out in his mind so vividly the day he’d saved her, how she’d thanked him profusely and cried into his chest when he hugged her. Now that image had faded and he was fighting temptation not to snap her arm like a toothpick to get payback for him and now Robin. They were nearly rail thin compared to the muscle she had in her legs.

“Oh!” the White Rabbit exclaimed when Batman gave her such a hard shove that she fell on her backside. “Rude!” she huffed as she stood back up, Batman already with his back to her as he was returning to the Batmobile.

Batman opened the car again, this time the twins ready for him. They sprung out from the backseat, choosing to give Batman a harsh tongue lashing since their arms were securely cuffed behind their backs. No one treated their Miss White that way!

Ignoring them, Batman grabbed the nearest twin to him. He seized Min by the collar of his suit, turned him around, and slammed him against the Batmobile. He undid the handcuffs before letting him go.

“H-here!” Max stammered as he turned around. He wasn’t going to give Batman any trouble or a reason to rough him up. 

After the cuffs fell off Max turned around and rubbed his wrists. He and Min glanced at each other for a moment before looking to Batman. Were they in the clear now to leave or...? 

“Get going!” Batman instructed. He wanted to reach Robin as soon as possible, the twins inadvertently blocking his way.

Min and Max didn’t need to be told twice. They ran over to the White Rabbit who greeted them with open arms. She giggled, smiling broadly when she found herself being embraced by both twins. Thinking that Batman was likely too busy to pay attention to them, the White Rabbit risked kissing both twins on the cheek.

Their happy reunion halted for only a moment when the Batmobile took off. With tires screeching and rubber burning long black skid marks were left in the parking lot as Batman drove away in a blur. It was too fast for the White Rabbit to see his face but she could guess that if he’d looked over at them at all it was a face filled with hate.

“I missed you boys so much...” This time the White Rabbit gave them each a long, proper kiss on the mouth. “I love you both; I’m sorry it took me so long to get you out this time.”

“We love you too!” the twins said together.

“It wasn’t your fault!” Min assured.

“Yeah!” Max agreed. “We’re the ones who got caught!”

The amount of time was irrelevant to the twins. It seemed they wouldn’t listen to any apologies at all or let the White Rabbit dwell on how bad she felt. They’d much rather cherish this moment of finally having her in their arms again.

“You look so handsome in those suits!” the White Rabbit gushed. “I just had to pick something special for this. I was worried they might just leave you in your prison uniforms.”

“They’re great!” Min fibbed. He could never tell the White Rabbit the truth of how much grief these suits had actually them if it was making her happy to see he and Max wear them.

“The white heart buttons made me think of you,” Max added.

“My sweet, wonderful boys...” the White Rabbit at last finally felt content. 

“What did you do to get us out, Caroline?” Min asked, that ironically enough being the burning question for him and Max.

“It’s a long story and a long walk home.” It was times like this the White Rabbit felt ashamed that she never got the hang of driving a car. “I’ll tell you on the way.”

“You should be wearing a jacket,” Max pointed out, noticing the White Rabbit shiver slightly as they started walking. “It’s starting to get colder at night!”

“You’re right, Max,” the White Rabbit agreed with a smile. “Oh!” she exclaimed when Min suddenly scooped her up, holding her close bridal style. 

“Guess I’ll have to keep you warm!” Min said with a broad grin. 

“Guess so!” the White wrapped his arms around his neck and kissed his cheek again. She noticed Max frown. “But I think you might get a little tired carrying me around so you’ll need a break when we’re about halfway.” She winked at him.

Min nodded, understanding. “Think you can take over for me, Max?”

“Sure!” Max answered enthusiastically. 

“I can’t wait to get home so I can properly show you two how much I adore you...” the White Rabbit hinted. The nights had gotten so lonely all alone but she didn’t intend on doing much sleeping that night.

Batman arrived at the hotel in under ten minutes. He parked the Batmobile out front and hurried into the building, racing up the stairs to the room number that had been branded on the key.

He didn’t bother wasting time unlocking the room. The door was weak from age and neglect anyway, busting from its hinges with a quick kick. It fell to the floor, revealing a startled Robin sitting up in bed.

The two stared at each other. Robin knew Batman would be coming to get him today but hadn’t quit expected it to be like that. Batman had thought he’d find his partner in a near death, pained state.

Instead Robin still had his mask on but was in a tank top and shorts. He seemed to be dressed that way so there was easier access to treat wounds that were visibly bandaged His left arm was in a cast, and there were some fading bruises, but he didn’t seem distressed in the slightest. Rather, he had the TV on, a snack beside him on the bed, and there were a few comics laying in a pile on the nightstand.

“You always know how to make an entrance!” Robin joked with a smile.

Batman was bewildered. “You weren’t tortured?” he asked as he walked to Robin’s bedside.

“No!” Robin answered with a laugh, thinking Batman was joking. “Miss White’s been taking care of me! Didn’t she tell you?”

Although his mask hid it Batman raised an eyebrow. “Since when do you call her ‘Miss White’?” 

“After all she did for me.” It only seemed right to show her that respect. “She saved my life, Batman!”

Robin had barely clung onto consciousness after the explosion and a broken arm that was pinned by the falling ceiling left him nearly helpless when the fire broke out. The flames were threatening to ravage him when the White Rabbit nearly stepped on him. 

Thankfully Robin had just enough strength to stand once the White Rabbit freed him and helped him up. His good arm around her shoulders, they fled the burning building and the White Rabbit took him into the long closed down hotel to rest and recover.

Robin completely passed out. When he finally woke up again he was hurting, and couldn’t move, but he saw that the White Rabbit had fixed him up to the best of her ability. 

Robin’s communicator to Batman had been broken from the blast and any injuries he obtained on the job were never treated as a hospital but the Batcave instead. Since it was best that Robin stay put for a bit longer anyway, a deal was struck between the White Rabbit and him. If he promised not to try and leave that room she would continue to treat his injuries and get in touch with Batman. When he was healed up enough to be moved she’d arrange for Batman to pick him up. In exchange, he’d owe her a favor. Just what would be decided upon later.

There were plenty of criminals who would love to take advantage of Robin in such a helpless state. They would also most likely be upset with the White Rabbit and word of her aiding him would spread. Robin understood her nervousness and complied.

What he hadn’t expected was how well she’d take care of him. It wasn’t just his injuries. She never once tried to take off his mask, she got a generator going to supply him with electricity, she gave him reading material to ease boredom, brought him some great meals, and kept him company. Really she treated him like an old friend rather than an adversary. They’d shared some laughs and great stories in this room. She shared of some of the heists he and Batman never even knew about and he told her about some of the more exciting adventures he and Batman had been on without compromising his secret identity.

He’d twisted the White Rabbit’s wrist, threatened her, and threw her to the ground. She’d done everything to make him believe that she’d done something terrible to Robin but still Batman felt ashamed of his actions as he listened. He knew her personality; he should have known there was something peculiar going on. 

In the end all the White Rabbit had done was photograph Robin’s injuries she’d had nothing to do with while he slept. She’d exhausted all of her medical talent to make sure he’d recover as much as possible, Batman discovered, once he looked over Robin. 

“I didn’t know she lied to you,” Robin said apologetically. “I really thought you knew I was alright.” 

“She likely didn’t want to put her bargaining chip in jeopardy,” Batman replied. “She waited this long to make me desperate to find you, and make me think you’d been tortured, so I’d give into her demands right away.” If she’d told him the truth from the beginning he would have still given the White Rabbit what she wanted out of gratitude but he knew she wasn’t the trusting sort.

“So she was deceiving us this whole time to get those twins out of Arkham?” Robin asked. “She only wanted to make sure I wouldn’t try to leave?” Was that why she’d brought him all this stuff? He almost felt hurt. He’d genuinely believed that the White Rabbit’s kindness was genuine.

“I think only Min and Max know the person Caroline really is these days.” 

The pain had greatly subsided but Batman still had to be slow and careful helping Robin to the Batmobile. The White Rabbit had been right about him being OK to be moved, Robin suffering no repercussions from it. Just a few aches and pains.

Robin’s burns,cuts, and bruises healed up much fast than his arm. Just like the White Rabbit had said the pigment of his skin where his burns were changed color as it healed. He’d be sure to put sunscreen on it too for awhile like she’d instructed.

Tired of being cooped up, Dick Grayson learned to cope with only being able to use one arm and decided to go out. He was walking along main street when he turned a corner, nearly bumping into two individuals holding shopping bags

“Woah!” Min explained. “Sorry, pal!”

“Yeah!” Max agreed. “We didn’t see you there!”

Dick’s blood ran cold. The twins?! That had to mean Caroline was around too, didn’t it? If she saw him like this she’d likely figure it out almost instantly who he really was. Maybe Min and Max would too if she’d told them about it! His heart was pounding. It really was too obvious! How was he supposed to know he’d casually walk into two people he’d thrown fists with?!

“What happened to you?” Min asked, noticing the cast, bandages, and few other nearly healed remnants of what he’d gone through as Robin when he looked Dick up and down. 

“Car accident!” Dick fibbed; at least he was already prepared for that story. “A guy just flew past a stop sign and hit me.” 

“There’s too many people out there who shouldn’t be on the road,” Min said, both he and Max frowning. 

“Maybe then our girl wouldn’t be too nervous to learn,” Max added. “She’s waiting for us at home so we gotta get going.” 

Both Min and Max stood to the side to give Dick plenty of room to pass by them. They exchanged farewells and went about their separate ways. Dick was still amazed at how casual that encounter had been with two murders and thieves, even if they weren’t “working” at the moment. Min and Max thought so little of it they never even mentioned it to Caroline after they returned. 

Dick gaped at the two twins as they continued on their way, hearing Max laugh and give his brother a shove after Min must have made some kind of wisecrack. There was a phone both nearby... This could be his chance to alert Bruce. He had a knack now for changing into his Batman outfit and getting to an area within moments. If they followed Min and Max home they’d find Caroline there too.

“Just remember, you owe me a BIG favor now,” Robin clearly recalled Caroline saying. “I have no idea what it will be but I’ll make it count.”

Robin let the twins go and continued on his way. They were even now after this for sure.

Tom leaned forward revealing the lotion at his side. I layed on my stomach and Tom moved his body over my legs, his knees touched my hips and he rested some of his weight on the back of my thighs. Tom stopped speaking and Haz sat up continuing where Tom left off at an attempt to divert my attention as I watched Toms mood slip into a dark distant place. He got up and left the hut as Haz touched my face pulling me back to his words.

“Both of us lost our mums and dads, my sister as well as Toms youngest brother” Harrisons eyes brimmed with tears. He squeezed them tight and tried to push forward. I grabbed his face swiping the small streak of the ones that did get lose. “Hey, we don't have to talk about this” I choked out knowing how it felt, I’ve never spoke it outloud. “I lost my mom a long time ago, the only one soul who ever cared about me” his eyes looked into mine with an apology “You need to know y/n, it’s part of who Tom and I are, well the soul purpose of our lives now” he said kissing my hands and pulling his composure back into place as I nodded my head. “They were killed by a gang...that rules over London.., dead for three days before we were notified and flew home to identify each of them”

“MURDERED” Tom cut in as he stood against the wall with bottles of liquor and three glasses of ice. “They were fucking tortured and murdered in cold blood by disgusting drug lords because our fathers are brave men who were undercover special forces and were close to shutting them down and taking away their livelihood.” Tom shot Haz a look as he walked towards the bed. “Give it to her straight Harrison or not at all. It’s what we agreed on, yeah?” Tom spat out making it uncomfortable to be in between them. I inched back slowly, my eyes wide with horror from their story not them. Tom tossed the bottles of alcohol on the bed and handed the cups to Haz, turning his attention towards me. “Don’t worry y/n, they didn’t get away with it...for long” he trailed off laughing at nothing I could see as funny here. Haz gave me another look of apology. “And sooner or later they will all pay, once we catch them, right Haz?” Tom said flopping back down on the bed as we if we were discussing the weather. They clinked their glasses as Haz handed me mine. “Fucking right there going to pay mate” they nodded together before looking at me.

I sipped my drink and studied them both and tried to piece it together with the words given to me. Make them pay? They didn’t get away with it...for long? They will all pay..once we catch them? Killers? Are they killers themselves? Well, in this case..vigilantes? My eyebrows scrunched together trying to picture them just as that..vigilantes. I focused on Harrison James Osterfield. His built physique was slightly bent forward towards me. His eyes met mine but now in a different way. Those ocean blue eyes were not the all telling eyes I had grown comfortable in swimming in. I seen the wall he was now behind to protect himself or perhaps protect me from himself? I visually traced his soft skin and noticed he was tensed and guarded. He hadn’t been since our first encounter, just this morning. What felt like weeks was simply hours ago! Haz dumped my belongings upside down and went through each item. The way he quickly read my personal name, address, social security number, itinerary and passport info to his partner who held me in a death grip with his hand on my throat, squeezing it more than once. I was only released when Haz..Harrison..Haz had said so. My mind flashed back to the fear that his gun shook me with.I ignored the red alert stranger sirens in my head as I swallowed hard, THANKS CIROC! I took another sip thinking if they wanted to hurt me or more it would have been done by now! Right? Perhaps this was a game and I was unknowingly the prize for the winner. I thought about it deeper as I watched Harrisons long soft fingers circling the top of his cold glass. I took a big gulp of mine and made the choice that there was no way with Haz! Yet plausible. I chewed on ice as Haz refilled my drink. He was right before, he knew what my body needed. Fuck, he had skill sets that would be required of a killer or vigilante. I took in a deep breath and let it out. Toms turn.

Not the eyes, not the eyes, anywhere but there! TOO LATE. What choice did I have with Thomas Stanley Holland?  His unnerving dark gaze had been on me the whole time I openly assessed Haz. With liquor flowing through my veins I’m sure my feelings were transparent at this point. Not that Tom needed me to be buzzed to see my soul. He just had that ability to see me even if I didn’t want him to. No one has ever got passed my wall, hell, no one's ever noticed I had one after I lost my mom. He tapped at his empty glass almost impatiently as I tore myself away from his remorseless dark chocolate eyes. My encounters thus far with Tom have always been spine-chilling and unnerving. He has done nothing but set off panic, hazardous alarms since he held me in his arms at his mercy. From the second we met he controlled me. He placed his calloused fingers around his neck, resting his veiny arm pulsing with alcohol across his chest as I recalled my limited time with him. His forceful and terrifying grip on my neck when he cut off my breathing..twice. SKILL SET! I sucked in air and moved to my next impression of him. The mark he left on my soul when we had our first of many unspoken exchanges with our eyes. I seen a soft and protective Tom, full of sorrow and regret at the way he handled me. Killers don’t have remorse for violent actions, but vigilantes do! Right? Next, our breakfast conversation where Tom once again took control. I remembered the silent exchange we shared after I forced myself to be brave against him, he challenged me on that and again took back the reins. I drank from my glass smiling at Harrisons note that told me what I already knew “He’s always calculated, careful and in control” he was an enticing and dangerous man that excited me. He stirred feels and lit a fire inside me that was snuffed out so long. Tom has already made his mark on me and he knew it. He proved it over and over every time he felt challenged or sensed a threat of me recoiling from him. Next, our encounter on the water. He scolded Haz like a child and I was sure he would have put hands on him if we were on solid ground. Once he noticed my fear and my red back he snapped his mood in a second. I looked at them back and forth. They waited for a response. But first, I needed air. Without a word I attempted to getup from the bed and found myself swaying on my knees and falling forward as I lost my balance. Tom sat up grabbing my waist as I started to giggle “Don’t worry, I’m not running away, a girl just needs air” I sighed looking into his panicked eyes. I grabbed his curly brown hair and yanked him to my lips “I’ll take yours if you let me Tommy” his hands gripped my back pulling me close our lips nearly colliding until I yelped in pain. FML!

“Shit shit shit, I’m sorry y/n” Tom said releasing me into Harrisons arms behind me on the bed. He took a step back and I squeezed my eyes to bit back the tears from the pain. Tom grabbed numbing spray and lotion handing it to Haz. He held my face close to his and helped slow my breathing as the pain was replaced with a shocking bite of cold gel and stinging spray. I was a hot fucking mess everywhere! I opened my eyes eager to get passed this.

“So you only kill the ones who are involved with murdering your family?” I asked looking into Toms eyes. He looked at Haz almost in confused panic, that in turn, confused me. “Not exactly” were his only words as he clenched his jaw tight. Tom was the straight shooter, no bullshitter man in charge. What was happening? I understood once Haz answered me from behind.Tom couldn’t use the next words of truth and be soft with them to keep me comfortable.  

“It’s hard to explain that love” he said kissing my head.”We weren’t this way when our families were killed, we never knew our fathers were undercover special forces until after their deaths. We grew up as normal kids grow up I suppose. Happy, loved and protected.” he exhaled sounding so sad. I ran my fingers over his bare skin on his legs that surrounded me in comfort, trying to return the favor. “We were recruited by the same private military that our dads devoted their lives to. The more we learned about what our dads fought for our lives changed forever. Were the good/bad guys that are kept a secret from even the highest powers”

“Were elite contracted killers y/n” Tom sad bluntly “The day the dirt hit our families coffins is the day I sought revenge and I haven’t looked back” he said so matter of factually. “If we hunt other bad people down to stop the pain we all suffered, I’m more than okay with it” he took a long look into my eyes to gage my internal reaction. I didn’t flinch. If anything it sucked me more into him.

I patted the bed as he smiled a wicked grin knowing I never would judge or hold what they did against them. If anything I understood it deeper than they knew.  

“My mother was all I had growing up. I had no idea who my father was until the end of her life. My mom loved to dance. She graduated top of her class at Julliard and was on the path to stardom when she met Robert y/l/n. Soon after, he swept her off her feet, then she found out she was pregnant with me. That bastard destroyed her world. He left her of course. He returned just once when I was born, only to test to see if I was indeed his daughter” I gripped my dress tight as I painfully forced myself to tell the rest through a stream of mad/sad tears. “She was taken from me too. We were coming home from her dance studio where she shared her passion of dance to so many people, she was loved by everyone.” I looked up for strength to tell her story for the first and last time. “We were talking about what to eat when we heard sirens and saw red and blue flashing lights. She pulled to the side thinking the cop car just needed to get by. She was so wrong, so so wrong” Harrison placed kisses on my trembling shoulders as I struggled not to sob. Now I knew why Tom used the word murdered over killed like Haz used. It gave the pain a name. Like a disease does when someone dies from it, you can blame the disease. Killed was too open ended, it’s why I always said I lost my mother because I had felt nothing but lost since she was murdered in cold blood. Her killers never found. Tom took my fisted hand opening it and sliding his own rough fingers locking them with mine.”She was murdered on the side of a fucking rode!” I choked out with anger. “She hadn’t done shit wrong, I mean EVER! Rob gave her lots of guilt money to cover our living expenses and to take care of his inconvenient, mistake of a daughter that was me, but she never touched a penny of it! She put that money in an account and was going to surprise me with it when I left for college. My mom took care of me with love and respect. She showed me what hard work meant and how it rewarded you even when bumps happened in the road of life.”

Haz handed Tom his shirt and Tom wiped my wet face first and then my running snotty nose. I grabbed it burying my face in the scent. I blew out a heavy breath and finished my story. “It was dark on that road. I hadn’t noticed they turned off all the lights and sounds until a man tapped on my window making me and my mother jump.She rolled both windows down as the other man asked for her ID and nothing else. He grabbed it as he shined a bright light in our faces. The other man leaned in and told us to sit tight, that they will be right back. My mom must have known they were bad men and of our fate. She dialed 911 and gave them our location and names and pleaded for them to hurry before hanging up. She held my hand tight and demanded I follow her lead, do as she says without hesitation. She made me promise to be strong and fearless! I was only nearing 16! I had no idea what she meant. She told me to tell them I was y/bestfriends/n and that I wasn’t who they already thought I was. Tell them I’m driving you home after dance class as we do y/bf/n sometimes. Police will be here soon to help us. Don’t admit to anything “tiny dancer” she smiled at me with her whole heart showing, she had been calling me that since I was in her belly. MOM! I don't understand why we have to lie to them! She had a gun to her head as the other man shouted at her that I was in fact Roberts y/l/n daughter. She insisted he was mistaken and that I looked a lot like Roberts daughter, we were best friends after all. The man behind me asked my name and I looked into my mothers eyes as I lied. I told them she was driving me home after class, I gave them my b/f address, her birthday, her parents name her dogs name. Even if they checked my b/f was away on family vacation so they weren’t in danger. They believed me and shoved us towards one another. That's when real police sirens could be heard and lights seen in the far distance coming our way. Stupid woman, you were home free, now we have to kill you both. He raised the gun at me first and my mother shielded me, getting shot in the back falling into my arms. The other man grabbed him cursing at him pulling him away as the cops got closer. She died in my arms” I stopped unable to tell them the details I still have nightmares about.

“She was so fucking brave y/n!” Haz said softly behind me as words of encouragement.

Tom nodded his head “That’s where you get it from y/n, yeah?” he asked as I smiled at them.

“I have always feared men with power like you both have, thanks to the sperm donor that gave me life aka, my father and the men he hung around. They all were hot blooded, impatient,overpowering, venomous, toxic and down right petrifying at times in my life. I just learned to stay small and go unnoticed unless requested when they were around. I’m thankful I learned fast. I’m just as thankful to learn so fast about you guys.You seem to be the best kinds of those scary men. Just more savage and with honor behind your reasoning. My Savagez, that's what I’ll call you” I said looking into Toms eyes but talking to them both.

“You have nothing to fear with me angel” Harrison kissed the side of face “Tom on the other hand, I don’t know, I should keep you away from him” He wrapped me in his arms mindful of my back and shifted us onto our sides. Tom laid down with his forehead touching mine. All three of us emotional, buzzing and our souls on full display. Tom was the one to burst the bubble.

“Now that we let out all our hidden secrets and past, can I ask you to let us take care of you and protect you, y/n?” he kissed my nose and looked into my eyes “Stay with us we'll be Your Savagez and you can be our home, forever” he stared into my eyes waiting on my answer.

My heart started to hammer in my chest and all of a sudden I really needed that air. Toms eyebrows furrowed together as I started to wiggle from under Haz and away from him. Harrison was confused as he watch me sit up and meet his eyes shooting daggers at him. His eyes went wide as he understood what I was freaking about. He started to laugh.THIS ASSHAT?! Tom looked between us several times before asking him what. “Nothing serious mate, great way to ask her but bad choice of words, right y/n?” he laughed as I got to my feet scowling at Haz “No, GREAT choice of words! Perhaps it was just bad timing then, y/n?” I let out a loud agitated growl wishing this was already past us. His proposal was truly perfect. Tom was starting to stress out.

I hated myself for having to tell  him after all we just shared. Tom was on his feet coming towards me and I put my hands up to stop him. This was it girl, just lay it out. Now or never. You can’t lose what isn’t yours yet, right? I looked at Haz as I remembered he said we’d tell Tom together. He sat up still laughing. “Huh, a little help here Harrison” I said trying to get him to grasp the seriousness of the situation.  His arm swept left to right as Tom’s attention was solely focused on me. “The floor is yours angel, ladies first” he smirked. It pissed me off that he found this funny.

FUCK IT! “I’m sorry we..NO, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you this sooner. I was half afraid and half shy of you Tom” I said honestly hating myself as I couldn’t meet his worried eyes “Just tell me now y/n, please darling” he urged as he twisted his fingers in his hair, chewing on his lip. I closed my eyes as I fought the urge to taste his mouth, my deepest desire yet. GIRL FOCUS! SAY IT!

“Haz and I got really personal on the jet ski before you caught up to us. Good news is...I found out he might have a smaller than normal sized penis but a really big heart! I washed my face and cooled by back off as I heard them talking things out between them. I let the water run as I also processed my insides after hearing their horrible story and finally speaking about my mother. So much of me felt lighter after saying it out loud. A tiny piece of me knew that in doing so it was my way of letting her go to rest. All these years I hung onto her knowing she was the only one who cared for me, looked out for me, loved me. Now I felt I was free falling until they said yes to me.

A knock on the door jolted me back into the hear and now. I cleared my throat and shut off the water. The sun was low and that meant we could get out of this hut that felt like a prison at this moment. I opened the door slow, anxiety kicking into overdrive. Who was on the other side? To my pleasant surprise it was both of them. No one looked mad. In fact they looked like I had hoped inside, happy with me and each other! Tom held up water for me with a smile and Haz had lotion.I smiled leading my savagez outside to see what we could do with a fresh new start on life.  At least there were some pretty fireworks to watch along the route - not huge amounts but some of them were quite spectacular lighting up the skies. As an aside, despite the huge moon, it did seem particularly dark last night. It was crisp and clear too, very cold. I saw Mars shining very clearly when we got home.

When I was little we had a tiny box of  Standard fireworks to light at home. A few candle type, some Catherine Wheels, a packet of sparklers (my personal highlight) and a rocket or two. It was usually something of a damp squib to be honest and there were often failures to light - very dangerous. I preferred the baked potato, sausages and beans on a chilly night.

By the time we had our own children things had moved on tremendously and we wouldn’t dream of getting fireworks for home, it was always the community bonfire and big organised display. I used to love those nights. We’d get all dressed up with our woolly hats, gloves and scarves and everyone from school seemed to go. All the neighbours set off for the local field around the same time, so you’d meet up walking along and once arrived there’d be candy floss and toffee apples and so on. There were hot dogs and burgers too I think, but we’d have our traditional supper beforehand, it’d help insulate us against the November night air. The bonfire was huge and stringent safety precautions were in place before the fireworks were let off. At the end there was a gentle procession home again amongst the excited children scuffling through the fallen leaves and sleepy tots in buggies.
