"Matt grinned like he thought Neil was joking and left." - the kings men
NEIL THE MAN THAT YOU ARE I feel like we as a fandom don't talk about this enough. Neil's casually sending out hits against abusers (Proust, Grayson), and admitting to wanting to murder Riko and the foxes are like, "ha, good one buddy!"
He's a feral little gremlin and I think the only people who see Neil clearly are Andrew, Kevin, and Jean

everyone talks abt neil if he was "nathaniel" and a part of the perfect court but the REAL perfect court would have been:
riko moriyama (#1)
kevin day (#2)
nathaniel wesninski (#3)
jean moreau (#4)
andrew minyard. (#5)
LIKE !? the most insane lineup that uve ever seen. they would walk onto a court and be the scariest group uve ever witnessed omg?? and if they let neil and andrew play w the aggression the ravens were taught? they would be killing ppl on the court!

Perfect court as horsemen of the Apocalypse
I don’t know why but for me this AU makes sense
Tell me if you want foxes in this universe
Riko as the Conquest (first)
Kevin as the War (second)
Jean as the Famine (third)
And Nathaniel as the Death (fourth)

thinking about the perfect court tonight. or the would-be perfect court lineup: riko moriyama (01), kevin day (02), nathaniel wesninski (03) and jean moreau (04). something about neil and jean being "misplaced forever partners". how neil would've been so staunchly loyal and protective and devoted to jean and how jean would've had someone as brave and fierce and bold as neil to rely on in the nest. kevin and jean living out the reality of the broken perfect court for years, being abused and battered and how jean said they'd bent over backwards to prevent the other ravens from noticing riko's treatment of them. how it was about pride and dignity and self-preservation. thinking about how kevin went to the nest brokenhearted but jean went to the nest angry. thinking about the miserable years they spent at each other's side, tending each other's wounds, murmuring in quiet french, jean watching and wanting kevin silently and kevin only having eyes for the court. riko toeing the line with kevin between "beloved brother" and "punching bag". how neil josten's number (10) is the inverse of riko's number (01). how in a previous draft andrew says kevin loves neil because of how similar neil is to riko. how jean's ideal perfect court number would've been 4 and 4 means death in japanese, and in every other draft jean kills himself. thinking about that alternate universe where kevin and nathaniel and jean all coexist under riko's heavy hand. how they'd look out for and protect and care about each other in the bloodstained walls of evermore, united under the cruel thumb of the master and his deranged nephew. something about how in another world, andrew would've been a part of that lineup. how jean said the perfect court was in dire need of a goalkeeper, and andrew was worthy to fill that role. thinking about how jean was certain kevin would die after the finals game, that riko would kill him and the master would kill riko, and then it would only be him, neil and andrew, and how they'd rebuild the perfect court with just the three of them. thinking about how desperately the other ravens strived to be given neil's 4, and how much that number cost jean and how in the end it came to nothing. and jeremy thinking he wants to know what it was for. the perfect court. the tragedy that could've been.

Indirectly, everyone in the perfect court was the cause of rikos downfall. Neil being the one who informed ichirou and indirectly telling him to get rid of riko and also being the one who was quite literally blocking every single advancement as a backliner. Kevin being the one to get the last point in the last second and finally proving he is better than riko. Jean leaving the Ravens making their defense line crumble and he was technically the one who helped Neil in the Nest and probably trained him as a backliner so riko doesn't punish them both.
Also bonus: Andrew who broke his hand.
I just think it's so symbolic that the people who riko tried so hard to get under his thumb was the cause of his downfall.

Riko's sociopathic stare vs Kevin's autism stare vs Andrew’s manic eyes vs Jean's empty ones (depression)

It's kind of funny (heartbreaking) that there were multiple Ravens who wanted a number, to the point where some tried to manipulate Jean into helping them one way or another, but none of them would have been next in line. No matter what they did, there was always someone ahead of them on the list. Someone who wasn't even on the team. That someone wasn't Neil. Neil was a surprise to everyone, including Riko. That someone was Andrew.
Kevin might have had to beg Riko to go visit Andrew, and Riko might have laughed at Kevin and dismissed Andrew when Andrew turned him down, but make no mistake, if Andrew had accepted and had become a Raven, he would have taken that #4 spot within his first year.
If we're being real, Andrew had more of a chance at becoming part of the perfect Court than any of those Ravens ever had. Even Jean thinks of Andrew as one of them.
The other Ravens never stood a chance.

as a jeaneil truther since day 1, tsc confirming how they were so perfect for each other, nora confirming neil wouldn't have ever left jean, seeing neil order a hit on a man after one comment from jean, neil getting jean to realize his worth even just a little bit even if it's just because elodie is a moreau too, jean getting rid of the notebooks and slowly accepting the trojans as his friends. they just fit so well and neil understands jean so well. i need the jeaneil partners raven au nowwwww.

Every now and again, I think about the perfect court, the “ideal” complete one with Riko, Kevin, Neil, Jean, and Andrew. Since reading tsc I’ve been obsessed with the tragedy of it all, everything that could’ve been and at the same time could never have been. Maybe Kevin and Jean could’ve been a thing, maybe Jean and Neil, but it never would have been healthy. Not in an environment like that. It never would’ve ended well. Like imagine the story here: 5 kids, raised in the spotlight. The whole world has their eyes on them. They’re talented, they’re handsome, they’re family, they’re perfect. They’re exactly what every exy fan wants to be, and they’re all destined for greatness. But what no one else sees is the abuse, the fear, the desperation, the codependency, the stifling silence, the insurmountable pressure, the unhealthy attachments to each other and to exy because if they don’t latch on to it all they’ll drown under it instead. Nothing good could ever last in that environment. And so over time it all crashes and burns. Exy’s greatest stars, the brightest future, imploding so drastically and painfully that there was no chance the world couldn’t notice. They’ll tear each other to shreds in their desperation for something real, something safe, something good that doesn’t exist. It’ll get more violent, more dangerous, more painful and one by one, each member of the court would leave, whether they made it out or died trying (or died without trying at all). And by the end, there’s nothing for the world to do but sit and watch them fall. In the wake of it all, one thought would pass through everyone’s heads. They were supposed to be perfect.
Idk, I find the tragedy of the Perfect Court fascinating. There’s something so captivating about something doomed from the start.

i can’t begin to explain how absolutely hysterical it makes me that andrew canonically smiles when only neil is around because he’d never be able to get that relaxed when others are present
