I have a question, love!
What is your favorite tea?
For me, I've been drinking the classic earl grey with a little milk and sugar 🥰
Tumblr media
**crests fingers** my favourite kind of question. 🤭 Earl grey is lovely!!! And surprisingly not in my collection. Mental note, I must add it!!
One of my great daily pleasures is my tea. I favour loose tea and, controversially, not normal tea with milk and all that. It's nice, but I like to think of my teas like potions. Come with me for a little tour of my non-seasonal leaves!!!
My ✨favourite✨ if I had to pick one would be Linden Flower. The lovely @lokischambermaid introduced me to it when I was at hers and I've loved it ever since.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lemon & Ginger - A classic, especially over the winter months.
Pure Ginger- I like this because I can add it to any of the others, usually nettle.
Nettle - Good for iron, but taste rating 4/10. Makes me feel very healthy and a nice alternative to green tea.
Linden flower- A less sickly alternative to chamomile. I usually have it after a stressful day at work (I don't drink, this is my sub🤣) and it works a treat. It's so delicious and delicate.
Jasmine green tea - as stated. I usually have this in the morning.
Relax - A lovely bedtime tea with linden, fennel, oat straw(??) and a bunch of other things.
Spearmint- I used to drink this all the time when I had bad skin and recently got back into it. It's supposed to be good for that AND it's absolutely yummy. Accept no peppermint substitutes.
Covent Garden blend- A floraly dark tea. It's nice for a caffiene hit, but generally I don't drink tea for that. Tasty, though!
Liquorice and Peppermint - This is a really nice sweet tea. Good if you're skipping desert. It's also very warming. I really like it, I need to get more actually.

Tea and Fasting: Is it Okay to Drink Tea While Fasting?
Tumblr media
Fasting, whether for religious or health reasons, has been practiced for centuries as a means of cleansing the body, improving metabolic function, and promoting overall well-being. While there are various types of fasting protocols, many have one thing in common – restrictions on food and beverage intake. For avid tea drinkers, this raises the question: can you drink tea while fasting? In this blog, we will explore the relationship between tea and fasting, addressing common concerns and considerations regarding tea consumption during a fast.
Types of Fasting and Their Impact on Tea Consumption
There are various types of fasting protocols, with restrictions on the intake of food and beverage varying based on the length and intensity of the fast. Some common types of fasting are here:
Intermittent Fasting (IF)
IF involves cycling between periods of eating and fasting, with the fasting period ranging from several hours to several days. During the fasting period, individuals typically restrict their calorie intake but may consume non-caloric beverages, such as water, tea, or coffee.
Water Fasting
While some teas offer health benefits, they can break a water fast. If your goal is water fasting, focus solely on water. Every cell, organ, and function relies on water to keep you going strong. No tea, coffee, juice, or other non-caloric beverages are allowed during this fast.
Juice Fasting
On a juice fast, individuals consume only freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juice for a set period, avoiding solid foods and other beverages.
Tea and Intermittent Fasting (IF)
IF's flexible nature allows for consuming non-caloric beverages during the fasting period, making tea consumption acceptable during a fast. However, it is essential to note that the type of tea consumed can affect the efficacy of the fast. For example, tea varieties with added milks, sugars, or other flavorings that contain calories will break the fast. Thus, it's best to choose plain, unsweetened varieties of tea during a fast, such as herbal teas like chamomile or peppermint.
Tea and Water Fasting
During a water fast, even a sip of sugary tea or a splash of milk in your coffee can break the fast. Remember, it's all about pure water intake for this one. That means no tea, no coffee, not even a squeeze of lemon – just pure hydration to keep you going. Tea consumption, even if unsweetened, can trigger digestive processes and interfere with the body's natural fasting state.
Tea and Juice Fasting
During a juice fast, tea consumption should be avoided, as it may disrupt the digestive process and hinder the body's cleansing process.
The Benefits and Considerations of Drinking Tea During a Fast
Hydration
Tea can be a valuable source of hydration, essential during a fast, as it aids in flushing toxins and maintaining the proper balance of electrolytes. While tea can be comforting during a fast, even small amounts of calories break the water fast state.
Mental Clarity
Tea, especially green tea, contains a small amount of caffeine that can provide a mild energy boost without breaking the fast. This can contribute to increased focus and mental alertness, facilitating mindfulness practices like meditation or yoga.
Appetite Suppression
Certain herbs, such as ginger and fennel, have been shown to help suppress the appetite, making tea consumption during a fast advantageous.
Potential Concerns
While tea consumption during a fast can be beneficial, there are potential concerns worth noting. Certain teas may cause digestive discomfort, especially in individuals with more sensitive digestive systems. Additionally, ingestion of overly strong or highly-pigmented teas, like some black teas, can upset the delicate balance of the digestive system.
Caloric Content
For a successful water fast, it's crucial to avoid all caloric beverages. Even small amounts of calories can break the fasted state and potentially hinder your goals. Thus, it's vital to consume only plain, unsweetened tea varieties during a fast.
Dehydration
Tea, when consumed in excessive quantities, can contribute to dehydration, a risk that is particularly concerning during longer fasts. Drinking tea in moderation and supplementing it with plain water can help avoid this issue.
Conclusion
In conclusion, tea consumption during a fast depends mainly on the type and length of the fast in question. While tea consumption is generally safe during intermittent fasting, tea should be avoided during strict water and juice fasts. Traditional water fasting excludes all beverages with calories or that can trigger an insulin response, including most teas. Understanding the calorie and caffeine content of a drink is crucial to ensure it doesn't break your fast.
Overall, tea can be a valuable and nourishing addition to a fasting protocol, providing hydration and restoring calmness during times of restriction and detoxification. With careful consideration and moderation, tea can be a comforting, supportive ally during a fast, promoting overall well-being and balance.

Geralt Takes Care of You - Smol, Silly Fluff Imagine
Tumblr media
Your eyes feel gritty when they creak open, and the sunlight is too bright. When you swallow, the soreness of your throat makes itself known. You groan. "Geralt...?"
"Hmm?" He's waking up, too; it's not one of his strengths. Once you had to lure him out of bed with strategically placed plates of bacon.
"I don't feel well." You manage, hearing the nasal quality of your own voice.
"What do you mean?" Suddenly he's awake, trying to examine you, his sleep-bleary eyes heavy with concern. "What's wrong?"
"Head-cold." You guess, sniffling. "Could you run into town and get some willow bark, and orange juice?"
You hear him move from the bed, and curl into the warm space he'd just occupied, shivering.
"Of course. Don't move, okay? I'll be really quick." You open one eye to watch him hop on one foot, tugging on a boot gracelessly. The sight makes you smile.
"There's no rush." You inform him, letting sleep snatch at you again; you hear the door click closed as he leaves on the errand.
"My love?" His voice filters into your dream; it feels as if he's been gone mere minutes. He's sat on the edge of the bed with a cloth bag, and a glass of juice.
"Mmh." You grate, pushing yourself up to sit, accepting the glass gratefully. "Thank you. Did they have willow bark?"
"Yes!" He enthuses, and pulls a vial from the bag, setting it down. "I also fetched valerian root, lavender oil, fresh ginger," He produces each item as he speaks, "Thyme tea, honey, six lemons," By now, both of your eyebrows are raised, "A fennel and horehound tincture, ground flaxseed--"
"Geralt!" You interrupt him, incredulous, "It's just a cold."
He lifts his chin stubbornly. "Yes, and I'm going to fight it, and win."
You pick up the ground flaxseed and shake the bottle at him. "You're aware this is a laxative, right?"
He grunts, and shrugs. "Well, I wanted to be... prepared."
You start to giggle at the sheepishness that creeps into his lovely golden gaze; he pouts until your amusement dissolves into a coughing fit, and then he's kneeling at your side. You smell peppermint oil.
"I'm gonna win." He murmurs, rubbing the scented liquid onto your chest. You press a kiss into his forehead.
"Of course you are, my heart. My big, strong, paranoid, slightly dim-witted--"
"How much flaxseed did you want in your next glass of juice, again?" He deadpans, "Three or four tablespoons?"
Again you laugh, and this time he joins you, settling onto the bed to cradle you in his large arms.

Best Deliciously Easy keto Recipes
                                       Introduction
The ketogenic diet or as like some people prefer to call it; the Keto diet or low carb diet is about consuming a lot of protein and fats but fewer carbs. This diet makes the body send the fats that we consume to the liver, which the latter transform it into energy to keep the body strong and active for a long time without feeling tired quickly.
The keto diet prevents you from consuming the lot for carbs that are the main reason of gaining weight because the sugar makes you hungry most of the time. When you consume carbs with small portions and focus more on protein and fat; your body doesn’t push you most of the time to eat; instead, it uses those fats to satisfy your hunger and keep you active.
If you are looking for a diet that will help you lose weight in a very short term, the ketogenic diet is the perfect diet for you because it not only helps you achieve great lean body; but also provides immense health benefits.

The Benefits of The Ketogenic Diet
So far, there are a lot of great benefits of the keto diet, but no negative effects have appeared yet at all; which makes it the delicious diet that fits everybody. Here are other health benefits of keto diet:
1. Increases the level of HDL:
One of the best aspects of the ketogenic diet is that it increases the level of HDL in the body, which is the good cholesterol that helps in lowering the risk of heart diseases.
2. Helps in Alleviating Diabetes Type 2:
By removing carbs from your daily meals, you say goodbye to sugar and insulin because your body already has what it needs, and you won’t have to be worried about what you eat.
3. Lowers Blood Pressure:
High blood pressure is a catastrophe because it might lead to kidney failure, heart diseases, strokes...
With this diet, you can say goodbye to all those worries and live a healthy life away from all those malignant diseases that threaten your life.
4. Gum Disease:
Gum disease is one of the worst and most painful diseases which is commonly caused by the consumption of too much sugar. When you eliminate sugar from your daily meals, you can avoid gum diseases and toothaches.
While on the keto diet, most of your diet will consist of foods high in fats coupled with a measured intake of proteins and low carbohydrate intake. Some of the food categories allowed in this diet include:
Tumblr media

1. Proteins
Poultry: Free-range Cornish hen, quail, goose, pheasant, chicken, duck, and turkey.
Fish and Seafood: Cod, tuna, scrod, anchovies, mackerel, flounder, catfish, trout, mahi-mahi, halibut, sole, sardines, salmon, halibut, snapper, and calamari. Always opt for wild caught fish to avoid toxins present in commercially reared fish.
Grass-fed Meat: These include beef, venison, goat, and lamb. Meat from wild animals are also acceptable; however, avoid sausages and meats that come with sugary sauces and those covered in breadcrumbs. Choose the chunks of meat with more fat since they contain less protein and more fat.
Pork: Boston butt, pork chops, ham pork, and loin. When choosing ham, be on the lookout for added sugar.
Bacon and Sausages: Preferably, you should buy these at specialty health food stores. If this is not possible, always read the labels to avoid those which contain fillers such as soy or sugars.
Canned Tuna and Salmon: Canned tuna and salmon are okay to consume while you are on the keto diet. However, avoid seafood rich in fillers, breaded seafood, and fried seafood.
Vegetable Protein Powders: Protein supplements such as whey protein, hemp protein, pea, and rice are acceptable.
Whole Eggs: This includes chicken eggs, and quail eggs which you can prepare through any mean desired; fried, soft or hard boiled, deviled, scrambled, or omelet style.
Shellfish: Oyster, mussels, lobster, shrimp, crab (not imitation crab that contains additives), clams, scallops, and squid.

2. Fats and Oils
Because these are your main sources of energy while you are on this diet, go for the types of fats and oils you enjoy. These may include:
* Omega 3 fatty acids from fish such as tuna, shellfish, and salmon
* Fish supplements or krill
* Monounsaturated fats such as egg yolks, avocado, and butter
* Vegetable oils such as olive oil, coconut oil
* Non-hydrogenated beef tallow, ghee, and lard.
* Duck and chicken fat
In order to make it easier to stick to this diet, be aware of which types of fat your body can tolerate. Many people seem to have zero or very low tolerance of vegetable oils and mayo. This may be a good thing because most of these oils are rich in omega 6 fatty acids - the kind that is bad for your body’s cholesterol levels.
In this case, work with the listed monounsaturated fats to reduce the inflammatory effect brought about by polyunsaturated fats. Nevertheless, work to balance both fats because you cannot survive on monounsaturated fats alone (You need a lot of fats and oils). Even then, avoid hydrogenated fats such as margarine to reduce the amount of trans-fats you eat.
3. Fresh Vegetables
For these foods, opt for organic ones or better yet, grow your own to avoid all pesticide toxins. Avoid starchy vegetables (corn, sweet potatoes, potatoes, peas, and winter squash) that are high in carbs. Instead, opt for moderate intake of sweet vegetables (squashes, peppers, tomatoes, and carrots). Vegetables that make it to the list are:
Celery
Collard Greens
Onions (high in sugar; moderate intake)
Alfalfa Sprouts
Beet Greens
Broccoli
Spinach
Dandelion Greens
Bamboo Shoots
Cabbage
Brussels sprouts
Garlic
Mushrooms
Shallots
Kale
Bok Choy
Sauerkraut
Chives
Celery Root
Swiss chard
Cauliflower
Snow Peas
Bean Sprouts
Olives
Cucumbers
Salad greens and lettuces: Romaine, Arugula, Fennel, Bok Choy, Boston lettuce, Endive, Mache, Escarole, Sorrel, Radicchio, Chicory Water Chestnuts
Turnips
Scallions
Dill Pickles
Leeks
Radishes
Chard
Asparagus
4. Dairy Products
Mascarpone cheese
Unsweetened whole milk yogurt (limit intake of this type of yogurt because it is a little high in carbs)
All soft and hard cheeses
Cream cheese
Full fat sour cream (do not forget to check for additives)
Full fat cottage cheese
Heavy whipping cream
In any case, always go for raw milk products and if you do not have easy access to them, go for the organic ones.
Tumblr media

5. Beverages
Bulletproof coffee
Decaf Tea
Flavored seltzer water
Decaf coffee
Water
Herbal tea
Lemon and lime juice (limit intake)
Clear broth or bouillon
6. Nuts and Seeds
Nuts: almonds, macadamias, pecans, and walnuts are the nuts with the lowest level of carbs meaning you can consume them in small amounts. Other nuts such as chestnuts, pistachios, and cashews contain a higher amount of carbs; thus, you should carefully monitor their intake. Nuts are best soaked for some time before roasted.
Nut flours: these are necessary because while you are on this diet, it does not mean baking no longer fits into your life. Nut flours such as almond flour will suffice.
7. Sweeteners
Some options include:
Erythritol
Splendor-liquid
Inulin and Chicory root
Lo Han Guo
Liquid Stevia
Xylitol
Swerve
8. Spices
Here are spices allowed on the keto diet:
Sea salt
Peppermint
Ginger
Basil
Chili pepper
Cloves
Thyme
Cilantro or coriander seeds
Rosemary
Black pepper
Cumin seeds
Oregano
Turmeric
Cayenne pepper
Cinnamon
Mustard seeds
Parsley
Dill
Sage
As you can see from the above very detailed list, keto diet is NOT a highly-restrictive dieting lifestyle, it also offers you a variety of foods to choose from; thus, you should not feel overwhelmed.
However, there are foods you should avoid to achieve optimal ketosis as your body makes the switch from using glucose to synthesizing fats for ketones.
In the next section, we shall outline the foods you should avoid:

Achieving Optimal Ketosis: Foods to Avoid
If you stick to the food listed in the previous section, you do not have to worry about not achieving optimal ketosis. On the same note, as you increase intake of those foods, you should also be on the lookout for the following foods that may hinder ketosis:
Avoid all grains, whole meal included (rye, wheat, oats, barley, corn, millet, rice sorghum and buckwheat). Also, avoid all products made from grains; these include foods such as crackers, pasta, pizza, and cookies.
Avoid refined fats and oils like sunflower, canola, grape seed, corn oil, soybean, and Trans-fats such as margarine.
Avoid milk (only full-fat raw milk is acceptable). For coffee, replace milk with reasonable amounts of cream.
Avoid tropical fruits such as bananas, pineapples, mango papaya, etc., and some high carb fruit.
Avoid fruit juice.
Avoid factory-farmed pork and fish.
Avoid all artificial sweeteners containing Aspartame, Sucralose, Saccharine, etc.
Avoid alcoholic sweet drinks such as beer, and sweet wine
Avoid Soy products
Now that you know what to eat and what to avoid, is there a way to guarantee faster adoption of ketosis? The answer is yes. The following section illuminates such tips:

How to Get Into Ketosis ‘Fast’: Invaluable Tips
It takes 48 hours to get into ketosis. To get there, you must correctly adapt the keto diet. Below are tips that should help you do just that and get your body into ketosis faster:
Tip 1: To get into ketosis faster, eat less than 20g of carbs a day.
Tip 2: Drink water, about 100 ounces per day. Drink more to lose more.
Tip 3: Purchase some Ketosis. Getting some validation that the diet is actually working will be a great motivation to keep you on a diet considering the intimidating nature of the first few days of the diet.
Tip 4: Do not panic. Be aware of the keto flu coming your way. The dizziness, the irritability, and fatigue you will be feeling on the first three days may have you experiencing mood swings; but don’t give in just yet. Reward yourself with bacon and delicious keto friendly foods as you crave for carbs and sugars. The craving will disappear as long as you’re full.
Tip 5: Consume more salt. This is really important. While on a keto diet, your body does not retain water as it normally would; hence, electrolytes like sodium quickly flush out of your body. Therefore, you need constant replenishing; otherwise, you will feel awful. As indicated earlier, opt for sea salt.
Tip 6: Never open the door to hunger. When you feel the tiniest bit of a hunger pang, immediately eat high-fat low-carb foods. The moment you get too hungry, it forms the temptation pathway. Remember: go simple. Do not over plan things because when you do, you may end up making everything strict and less fun. The keto diet is fun; keep it so.
Tip 7: Remember: this is not a high protein diet. The keto diet is high fat, low carb, and moderate protein diet. Moderate is the key word here.
Tip 8: Embrace the fat. Eat fat to lose fat that is your new motto. Do not shy away from the fat because it is your ticket to a healthier you.

Common Keto Diet Mistakes You Should Avoid
Nobody is perfect, and no diet is perfect. As you adopt this diet for good health and weight loss, you are bound to make several mistakes; this is normal. The best way to avoid, or minimize the effects of mistakes is by learning and preparing for common mistakes. Below is a list of common keto diet mistakes dieters make:
Eating Too Many Carbs
There is no exact definition of what ‘low carb’ means. Some would say it is simply anything under 100 to 150 grams a day simply because they get amazing results with this range. However, this may be excessive if your aim is to have plenty of ketones in your bloodstream. Most keto dieters go for under 50-grams of carbs per day to get into optimal ketosis. Anything beyond that is termed as excessive.
Tumblr media
Eating Too Much Protein
Remember: the keto diet is all about protein moderation.
Impatience
As you adopt a keto diet, you need patience: patience to get into ketosis and patience to adapt to ketosis. Understand that previously, your body’s main source of energy was carbs; now, it has to adapt to a new source of energy, fats. The body requires time to do this; therefore, be patient.
Obsessing Over The Scale
The number on your weigh scale should not determine your keto diet success. Let this be the least of your worries. Just live life and enjoy your diet. Weight loss will happen; do yourself a favor and keep away from that scale.
Not Eating Enough Fats
The unrestricted consumption of fats may seem excessive. However, the keto diet is a high-fat diet. Just trust keto and enjoy the fat. However, you should eat the right kind of fats, preferably monounsaturated and saturated fats.
Eating Processed Keto’ Foods
When you are on a keto diet, always think about it this way: the intention is to eat natural ingredients and not foods that come in wrappers such as Atkins bars and Quest bars. Although you can occasionally eat these, the idea is for a large portion of your diet (we are talking about 70-80% of your entire diet) to consist of natural ingredients.
Being After A Quick Fix
If this is your aim, do not start the diet. The Keto diet is more of a lifestyle change than a short-term diet plan. Dropping a few pounds and then going back to your normal bad eating habits will be a waste of time.
Indecisiveness
Half-heartedly adopting the keto diet could be the worst thing you could do to yourself because you are just wasting time. If you are not all in, you will not survive through the temporary effects that come with adopting the diet. Decide on what you want and think of everything you will gain by going keto to keep you motivated.

In the two mice and a Phase 1 human clinical preliminary including patients accepting chemotherapy, extensive stretches of not eating fundamentally brought down white platelet tallies. In mice, fasting cycles then "turned on the regenerative switch," changing the flagging pathways for onomatopoetic undifferentiated organisms. These being in charge of the age of blood and insusceptible frameworks, the examination appeared. They were not ready to anticipate that delayed fasting would have such an amazing impact in advancing undifferentiated cell based recovery of the onomatopoetic framework with the human body. (Onomatopoetic framework is the natural arrangement of the body comprising of the blood and the structures that capacity in its generation.) Anyway the investigation shows this could have critical advantages for more advantageous maturing. As it appears to be obvious that safe capacity can decrease with age. In this manner expanding defenselessness to malady as we age. So by drawing in irregular, delayed fasting times of no sustenance: Only including liquids, for example, sifted water, natural bone juices, natural mother apple juice vinegar and natural home grown teas for two to four days of the week. By actualizing fasting into your way of life routine even on an intermittent premise has been found to build the degrees of "chaperone" proteins counteracting off base gathering of different atoms in the phone. Decreasing the danger of different sicknesses, for example, melancholy, tension, dementia and Alzheimer. Fasting additionally supports autograph, a procedure wherein cells discard harmed atoms including ones that were connected to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other neurological ailments. Another motivation to take a gander at executing changes to both a more advantageous plant based eating regimen and irregular fasting is that it improves the body's reaction to insulin. Hence diminishing the danger of diabetes and heart disappointment. An expansion of irritation in the body appears to go inseparably with stoutness, diabetes, and coronary illness. So by executing irregular fasting and actualizing changes to the nourishment you are eating, this will help with diminishing irritation which is a noteworthy contributing variable to numerous illnesses, for example, joint inflammation, fibrillation to maladies, for example, Alzheimer and heart disappointment. Cooling Off with Compassion by Melissa Boo
Welcome to July! The peak of pitta season, the hottest heat of the summer. Temperatures are high, and tempers are short. Because, let’s be honest - it’s hard not to be cranky when you’re constantly covered in sweat! One summer in particular showed me the power of prioritizing cooling down in these hot summer months - my yoga teacher training at Revolution Yoga. Learning that heat, judgement, and anger were interconnected in yoga philosophy and Ayurveda was so eye-opening to me. These qualities are associated with pitta dosha, the combination of the fire and water elements. When there’s an excess of pitta dosha, we’re more susceptible to the negative qualities of pitta in our bodies and minds.
And in the bigger picture of things, our culture encourages a lot of the pitta qualities that can be very unhealthy when they’re out of balance: Precision can morph into perfectionism. We’re encouraged to strive for absolute perfection, never settle, and make sure that every detail is correct. Only the best will do, and anything less is unacceptable. Determination can turn into depletion. We’re encouraged to work our hardest, never stop or surrender, and blame ourselves for falling short. If we only tried harder, did more, or planned better, we could’ve achieved The Thing. Ambition can mutate into emptiness. We’re encouraged to go faster, accomplish more, and keep striving for better. If you’re content with what you have, you’re being lazy and unmotivated. Wait a sec, pump the pitta-brakes!
Surrender isn’t weakness - it’s acceptance and trust. Contentment isn’t giving up - it’s appreciation and gratitude. Mistakes aren’t shameful - they’re a part of being human. While we might not be able to change the whole culture all at once, we can cultivate calmness, kindness, and contentment in the microcosm of our own lives. Ayurveda recommends that to combat this heat, we cool off with compassion. In our yoga practice, that can be encouraged with heart- and shoulder- opening poses, like gentle backbends, side stretches, and expansive, wide-armed variations.
Poses like Sphinx, Locust, Bridge, Warrior II, Extended Side Angle, and Mountain can help us soften our shoulders and release the tension that gets held there when we’re stressed. Slow- flow and restorative yoga practices can help us soothe our racing thoughts and help them settle down; when we create stillness in the body and breath, it lets our nervous system know it’s okay to release anxiety and panic, too.
Moving off the yoga mat, we can add simple practices to our daily lives that encourage empathy, patience, and equanimity. It’s all about slowing down, cooling off, and chilling out. Loving-kindness meditations (like metta meditation) can remind us how to get out of our hot-heads, into our hearts, and put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. Breathwork practices (pranayama) like cooling breath (sitali) and two-to-one breathing can calm our nerves, while balancing exercises like alternate-nostril breathing (nadi shodina) can help temper our internal fire. And in the kitchen, we can show compassion for our bodies during this hot and humid time by add sweet, creamy, mild, and bitter foods into our meals. Bananas, pears, mangoes, coconut, and mint can add sweetness; avocados, hummus, and dairy (in moderation) can add creaminess; and tulsi, rose, coriander, cumin, fennel, pomegranate, bitter greens, and beans can add astringent and bitter qualities. Unsurprisingly, hydration is particularly important during the summer - but it’s recommended to stick with room-temperature or slight cool water, as ice beverages and foods can be too extreme and shock the system. Scents that can encourage coolness-and-calmness include floral scents, like geranium, rose, and jasmine, as well as more astringent scents, like tea tree, sandalwood, peppermint. Cooling colors include pastels, light neutrals (like white and beige), blues, and greens. Sounds to pacify pitta include running rivers, crashing waves, and rustling leaves - gentle movements in nature that provide relief from the stagnant heat of the summer. Releasing feelings and thought-patterns of judgement, perfectionism, and anger helps us find surrender, patience, and compassion to calm our minds and cool our tempers. It can be hard to let things go in our pitta-imbalanced culture - particularly in hot, sweaty, and cranky pitta season! - but there’s plenty of simple ways we can balance all that heat in our daily lives as we make another cycle around the sun. Wishing you all the fun and celebration that summer brings!

Without a doubt, natural alternatives to mainstream commercial toothpastes are usually a better choice for your oral health. However an all natural solution is not always what it seems.
Our mouths are similar to our guts in that they house a living, breathing microbiome of bacteria. Our oral microbiomes contain both good and bad bacteria. The key to a healthy mouth, teeth, and fresh breath is finding the best balance of these bacteria. This is not accomplished by continuously and indiscriminately killing bacteria in your mouth with mouthwashes and toothpastes.
Contrary to what most of us have been told for the majority of our lives, it isn’t a good idea to blast the bacteria in your mouth with products such as Listerine mouthwash, which claims to ‘kill 99% of germs.’ When you use products that kill bad bacteria, those same products can also harm good bacteria.
Being the health-conscious person you are, you’d probably prefer to see ‘peppermint oil’ on a tube of toothpaste over ‘sulfuric acid monododecyl ester sodium salts.’ While I’m going to have to agree with you on that one, this does NOT mean the safer sounding ingredient isn’t powerful and capable of leaving a lasting negative impact on your health.
In fact, some essential oils have been found to be as powerful as chlorhexidine – the flagship ingredient in many prescription mouthwashes – well-known for its ability to crush your oral microbiome.
Additionally, high amounts of essential oils can damage gum tissues – similar to chlorhexidine. Studies have found mouth rinses with some essential oils to be damaging to healthy gums and in some cases, they can prevent gums from functioning normally.
Essential oils can match the effectiveness of manmade chemicals such as Chlorhexidine.
We tend to think because an ingredient comes from a natural source (and we can pronounce their names!) they are safer than the manmade, mystery ingredients inside so many of our products. But essential oils have been used for hundreds of years for their powerfully antibacterial properties.
Essential oils have long been used in cleaning products, to disinfect wounds, and to treat infections precisely due to their effectiveness in killing microbes. Some believe essential oils may be the next ‘antibiotics’ as many bacterial strains have become more and more antibiotic resistant.
So, why then would we think it’s a good idea to add essential oils to our toothpastes?
I’ve seen many an article explain the importance of the oral microbiome and beneficial bacteria, only to immediately recommend using toothpastes containing powerfully antibacterial essential oils.
Are essential oils beneficial in toothpaste and other oral care products? Or have we overlooked the strength of this important natural ingredient?
Essential oils are highly concentrated
There’s a reason that tiny bottle is so expensive.
Essential oils are highly concentrated derivatives of their respective plant. Here’s how much plant life you need to make a standard 15 ml bottle of your favorite essential oil:
315 pounds of rose petals
30 pounds of lavender flowers
75 lemons
1 pound of peppermint plant
Many essential oils carry serious warnings due to their potency. They should be considered pharmaceutical grade and used with the same care you would use a drug.
I’m not trying to scare you away from essential oils at all here, I love my essential oils. I just want you to be aware that they are powerful and need to be used responsibly. As a general rule of thumb, any time you’re using essential oils they should always be diluted and you usually only need a couple of drops.
Essential oils in the mouth kill beneficial bacteria
The problem with many natural products is there isn’t nearly as much funding for research when compared to pharmaceuticals. Most of the studies on the effects of essential oils on the oral microbiome are examining their ability to kill oral pathogens or how effective they are in comparison to conventional ingredients (such as chlorhexidine).
One study found that tea tree mouth rinses were effective at killing bacteria and volatile sulphur compound, known to cause bad breath. It seems like good news until the same study concluded that tea tree oil was as effective as chlorhexidine.
Remember nasty chlorhexidine? It’s a disinfectant that kills both beneficial and harmful bacteria of the mouth. Tea tree oil has long been used for its antibacterial properties and is probably not great for your oral microbiome.
That being said, many of the conclusions of available studies tend to consider essential oils effective if they kill bacterial or fungal infections.  The better studies, measure the effectiveness of various essential oils in a variety of concentrations and their effect on specific organisms in the mouth.
While we are hearing more about the gut microbiome and the delicate balance needed among the bacteria there – the oral microbiome, inextricably linked to the gut microbiome, is not being discussed.
There are claims that some essential oils are capable of killing only the bad bacteria and leaving the beneficial. However, there is a serious lack of research comparing the effects of essential oils on beneficial and harmful bacteria. What research does exist on the subject, does not support this claim. Essential oils can damage healthy gum tissue and kill microbes indiscriminately.
I do think that in the case of harmful bacterial or fungal overgrowth, such as candidiasis, essential oils could be an effective and safe as a short term option. My concern with essential oils in oral products is daily exposure that could lead to a disrupted microbiome.
Essential oils to avoid during pregnancy
Using essential oils during pregnancy is a topic of contentious debate and in need of more research all around. Due to their therapeutic potency, there are valid concerns for essential oil use during pregnancy. There are a few essential oils that carry warnings from ancient folklore but due to the delicate nature of pregnancy, a better ‘safe than sorry’ attitude has been adopted for many essential oils (peppermint and clary sage are two of these).
The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA) recommends pregnant women avoid the following essential oils:
Aniseed
Basil
Birch
Camphor
Mugwort
Parsley seed
Pennyroyal
Sage
Tansy
Tarragon
Thuja
Wintergreen
Wormwood
I bring up essential oils and pregnancy mostly because toothpastes are a source of essential oils that many pregnant mothers don’t consider and the concerns demonstrate the medicinal power and efficacy of essential oils.
Factors that contribute to essential oil safety
‘Essential oils’ is a blanket term that can be misleading when discussing safety and effectiveness. There are thousands of essential oils available on the market. Additionally, the production of essential oils is not regulated by the FDA and so therefore they vary in purity. With these variables in mind, there are four important considerations when it comes to essential oil safety.
Species of the plant and its therapeutic use – Some oils are great for certain health factors but terrible for others. An example of this is fennel oil is great for improving colic in infants but can cause seizures in people with epilepsy – two dramatically opposing effects of the same oil.
Quality of the essential oil – This should be a given. I urge you to only use high-quality essential oils from trusted sources. When it comes to your natural toothpaste, sticking with a better brand is usually a better bet.
Application method – How you use an essential oil will influence how much you should use. Using essential oils in a diffuser is generally safe and there aren’t as many limits. Once you start applying oils to your skin, your mouth or begin consuming them, the amount you should use significantly decreases. In fact, using essential oils orally (such as in toothpaste) has the lowest recommended dosage when compared to dermal or internal use.
Chemical composition – For many oils, the compounds contained in the oil are what give it its therapeutic properties. Many of the compounds have been isolated and studied while others could use more research.
Should your toothpaste contain essential oils?
It’s important that the sources of your essential oils are always high-quality. When it comes to your toothpaste ingredients, it’s tough to know where their essential oils are coming from. Also, most of the essential oils toothpastes are antibacterial, such as:
Peppermint
Tea tree
Wintergreen
Spearmint
Clove
But this isn’t always the case.
Some essential oils found in toothpastes are not very antibacterial and totally acceptable, such as Aniseed (anise). Surprisingly Cinnamon oil has the most potential bactericidal properties and is found in many toothpastes.
The biggest concern I have for essential oils in toothpastes is how potentially powerfully destructive the antibacterial properties can be in a toothpaste.
The concern behind essential oils toothpaste is warranted
What’s confusing for consumers is that we don’t know the exact concentration of the essential oil, the therapeutic dose of the essential oil nor how much essential oil is used per tube of toothpaste, but we know that just one drop can pack a major antibacterial punch.
Check your toothpaste ingredients to see where on this list essential oils falls – the lower on the list the better. While this isn’t a hard and fast rule for knowing exactly how much essential oils are in your toothpaste, it can help you when you’re making a decision between two tubes.
I want to add that if you’re using a brand of toothpaste where the worst ingredient is essential oils, you’re doing much better at taking care of your mouth than most of the country. Commercial toothpastes like Crest and Colgate are packed with all sorts of nasty chemicals. I’m constantly telling my patients, “Oral health is about progress, not perfection.”
That being said, the concern behind essential oils in toothpaste is warranted. In an effort to improve your oral microbiome and dental health, you may have chosen and equally damaging product.
Chocolate lover’s DIY toothpaste without essential oils
I’ve seen many dental health success stories in patients who focus on diet and lifestyle over quick fixes. Through focusing on a nutrient dense diet, reducing inflammation, and promoting good oral microbiome health, you’ll have better oral and overall health.
I’ve created a DIY toothpaste with all this information in mind and it has been wildly successful – I’m excited to share it with you!
My Chocolate Lover’s DIY Toothpaste combines all the essential elements for cultivating a healthy oral microbiome and mouth.
I first designed this toothpaste for my family and patients but I was hearing such great feedback, I just had to share it with you. This toothpaste:
Promotes remineralization of your teeth
Includes cacao which contains compounds that reduce cavities and strengthen enamel
Nourishes your beneficial bacteria with probiotics and prebiotics
Gives your mouth a neutral pH, which will leave a wonderful aftertaste
Plus, it tastes amazing!
I’d love to hear how you like this toothpaste – share a photo of you and your family using it with the hashtag #ChocolatesLoversDIYToothpaste and tag me @askthedentist on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter.
In the comments below, let me know your experience with an essential oils toothpaste, which essential oils did it contain and what did you think?

Hello Friends!
How are you enjoying the hot summer days?!
Fruits are ripening and flowers are beginning to fully invest in seed production. This is a month to really just take it all in and enjoy nature for what it means to you. Nature comforts each of us in unique ways, take note of how summer appeals to you and let yourself enjoy it the way you like it. There are so many individual ways to take advantage of how summer days ease tensions, brings community together, and allows each of us to exist for no other reason than our own individual purpose.
We naturally gravitate toward friends who share our sentiments during summer. I am an observant person and I love being in motion, whether it physical or mental, the ebb and flow of information is the rhythm that my life is founded on. During summer, my keen sense of observation draws me toward my gardens, onto beaches, into the kitchen and forests. I choose spaces where I can let myself sense as much information as I can and then creatively respond. I wander, observe, and create. I love it when people come wandering with me. We have lengthy meandering conversations that rise into intense discussions and then dissipate as it stretches into long silences. We simply take in the scene and share what comes up for us as we explore. This wave-like way of being in community really appeals to me. It allows for fast chirpy excitement and a slow gathering of insight in a natural flow.
At some point every summer I have to unlearn workaholic tendencies. Too much focus on achievement can easily keep me distracted from the beauty and grace of each moment. Especially on a farm when it is easy to not see anything but a ton of work that needs to get done. So many missed opportunities pass when we narrow our focus and perceptions too much. It is so easy to get hung up on things we have to do, rather than give yourself the freedom to do nothing or say yes to to things you want to do. I find that when I slow down and let myself be in a natural state of awareness I learn that I am a much better thinker when I am not trying so damn hard. Pushing toward a goal all the time just creates patterns of stress for many of us. Play, curiosity, and giving yourself freedom to widen your gaze helps you take in more information and respond with greater compassion and in alignment with kindness.
I know living in the US right now is rife with fears, uncertainties, and disgust at the depths of ignorance we see each day in our communities and in the news. There is simply no room in our society for racism and discrimination. Building tolerance is only acceptable when it is toward an inclusive whole. Tolerance extended toward white supremacists is not acceptable. There are people out there working their butts off with a ton of courage resisting racism and counter protesting in response to white supremacist gatherings. My heart goes out to all the folks on the front lines protesting and standing up to dangerous and violent hate groups! White supremacy is an abomination and we need to dismantle it right here right now for the good of our current generations and future generations.
It goes without saying that those of us who are white need to be leading the discourse in our families and communities to undo racism in our own minds, listening to and believing the stories of the people of color, and work together to dismantle policies and practices that keep immigrants and people of color from experiencing the same level of power and privilege that we do. The US is one of the only places in the world that has the opportunity to fully provide equal rights and privilege to all. It is totally a waste of our democracy to allow politicians to sanction hate groups and encourage violence and hate through the power of public and legislative avenues.
I want to be part of a multi-cultural country that provides equal access to resources, services, connection, and refuge for all people. I spend a lot of time farming, cooking, studying ecology, and creating healing herbal teas. I want to clearly state that I get to focus on my interests and crafts because of my privilege. I do not have to navigate a daily deluge of fear, insecurity, and racism. I do not have to justify my actions or prove my worth every single day. Nobody dehumanizes me based on the color of my skin. It is important that I continue to extend my energy, power, and privilege toward people who experience oppression. There is so much energy and opportunity to extend toward others every day. For whites, it takes a lot of work to undo racism in our own minds, but the work is absolutely necessary to be part of a free respectful society. The first time I took an undoing racism training course almost 20 years ago I was totally surprised and confused at how my own thoughts and inaction were enabling a racist system. And my life since then has been lived in solidarity with anti-racism organizations and social movements. We often feel we cannot do enough, I feel that, but we can all do little things like donating a few dollars every month to organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center or support political movements and organizations in your local community that host events where people of color lead discussions about social justice issues that are affecting them every single day. Or simply signing up for an undoing racism training course. And honestly, just keeping your heart and mind open and engaged, rather than shutting down or feeling shame, when we see really painful acts of racism at the hands of hate groups, the police, and ignorant rhetoric by government officials. My voice and actions will continue to proudly be amongst the diverse choir that step by step takes down the patterns and political system that sanctions white supremacy and hate.
And there is another reality that has always been waiting for us. One that is collaborative, nurturing, where mutualism forms the basis of everyday interactions with people and place. Where we choose to enjoy being in a society where differences are an asset and beautiful. Where we extend generosity even when we feel depleted or lost. Where we refuse to make choices that make us look or feel superior to others. This life we live is a shared experience, we need to embody universal reciprocity…in a way that it is extended far beyond our little chosen communities. We can create an amazing society where everyone feels both generous and supported, our government must adapt and become a leader in inclusivity or we will continue to become more polarized and violent.
Sharing tea is a nearly universal act of connection and welcoming. So many cultures use a form of tea ceremony as a way to sit together, ground, and share ideas. Sharing tea with friends, acquaintances, and family is a timeless ritual of love, companionship, and reciprocity. I am not saying that tea drinking solves our societies problems, but it does help heal emotional wounds and traumas if you let it. It becomes a daily ritual of renewal and love...a ritual that we can share with others and use as a tool to build deeper trust, community, and friendship.
Think Tea
Ingredients: gunpowder green tea, tulsi, lemongrass, and gotu kola
Think tea is often a tea I bring out in the fall, but I noticed this summer that there are lots of people who feel depleted, anxious, and depressed. Think tea is a great tea for times when you feel held back by fatigue, but for whatever reason need to keep a certain pace. We have to work a whole lot more than we ever thought we would have to in order to keep afloat. The summer heat slows us down and politics as they are seems to keep us in a state of turmoil. So Think tea is a delicious brew to energize the body and help our nervous system adapt to stress. Think tea is energizing, supports memory, and brings forth mental clarity.
Gunpowder green tea is a caffeinated tea that has a nice floral quality to it. It is not aggressively fermented so it maintains a lot of it grassy and orchid-like flavor tones. Because green tea has caffeine and caffeine can exacerbate adrenal fatigue, I try to combine caffeinated teas with herbs that help feed and support the nervous system. Lemongrass is a great herbs for summer. It is uplifting and refreshing. Lemongrass is a great digestive support and helps calm nervous disorders. Tulsi is a fantastic adaptogen herb. It helps regulate the nervous system to keep it in balance through stress and disease. Tulsi has been shown in animal and human studies to aid in mental recovery after brain injury. Gotu kola is a great herb for memory and focus. It has been used in ayurveda for millennia as a brain tonic herb.
Making Think Tea iced is really easy. Just combine the tea and cold water in a lidded jar, shake vigorously, and stick in the fridge for a few hours. I usually shake it again before I strain and drink the tea. If you make it as an iced tea you can add a little honey and fresh lemon if you want a sweet tea.
Love Digest Tea
Ingredients: dandelion root, burdock root, ginger, fennel, peppermint, and spearmint
Digest tea helps the body digest and absorb nutrients more effectively. I like to drink digest tea before I eat, helping to stimulate and prepare the digestive system for food. During mid to late summer we eat a lot more fresh fruit, so you are actually getting a lot of natural enzymes from the fruits that help support digestion. But we also do a lot of snacking and are highly active during summer so we might not be giving our digestive system the down time it needs to properly digest.
This is a blend that is popular amongst my friends for acid reflux and poor digestion. I drink this tea before eating and often share it with friends who come over for dinner. I love this tea hot or iced. Lately I have been grating a little fresh ginger into digest tea when I steep it because I have had some asthma relating to smokey air we had for a few weeks in the Puget Sound. Fresh ginger along with the dried ginger in this tea is a great anti-spasmodic for the lungs and dramatically improves wheezing that happens when the lungs are congested.
Peace Always
Ingredients: linden, tulsi, fennel, oat tops, goji berry, lemon balm, chamomile, and licorice
This blend is a great tea to drink when feeling overwhelmed and/or angry. I have been having a lot of anger come up for a whole variety of reasons, but when I feel helpless I often get angry. This is a great nervine blend, helping to bring peace into your life. It is so hard to have a single day where something crazy and anxiety inducing doesn’t happen in current events. The next few years are really going to test our bodies abilities to be resilient and strong. I am always striving to send you teas that help you manage stress, so you can keep fighting the good fight day after day and also maintaining your work and creative life. I love that this blend can be drank during a stressful day, but also enjoyed after dinner. For some people, tulsi can be a little stimulating, so try it in the evening and see how you feel.
This blend helps ease frazzled nerves, but it is also very nutritive and, like in Think Tea, tulsi is a great ally herb for the nervous system. Tulsi helps your body resist a full blown stress reaction and also helps the body recover after a period of stress. It is highly regarded as both a spiritual and physical healing herb in India, where it is know as “queen of the herbs”. Fennel is both a great digestive support herb and calms the nerves. Lemonbalm is an herb I love to grow but I do not use it in tea super often because I personally have a hard time enjoying the taste. Lemonbalm is a powerhouse herb, it is anti-viral, especially toward the herpes viruses, it calms the mind without dulling it, supports the liver, encourages restful sleep, and is a powerful antioxidant. Goji berry is a great nutritive adaptogen herb, helping the body adapt to stress. Chamomile is digestive and calming. Oat tops are nutritious and calming. And Licorice helps sweeten the tea and restore healthy nervous system function.

The simple cuppa is currently dropping around with health advantages. Here’s what technology needs to state concerning the nation’s favorite drink
Yrom a fragile mug of Earl Gray to some powerful, awaken-me-up builder’s, there’s nothing very just like a good old fashioned cuppa, can there be?
Brits for over 350 years have may be the many extremely taken drink on the planet after water and consumed tea. A 80 percent of English people consume tea nowadays than ever before identifying the part of the drink in a healthier diet and there’s currently more proof. We chose to have a look in the methods tea could be significantly more than simply the beverage that is nation’s favorite…
Antioxidants – the substances that assist in preventing oxidation’s harmful ramifications on tissues in the torso – perform with an essential part within our diet. Even though all teas include reputable degrees of antioxidants, some proceed the mile. ‘The main wellness that is additional – ’ claims a nutritionist, Barns and author. ‘These incorporate a kind of flavonol called catechins, which the absolute most plentiful is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Catechins have now been discovered to possess anti-inflammatory anti-cancer exercise and antiageing qualities, among others.’ buying antioxidant strike that was actual? Why the distinction? ‘The degree of fluoride in leaves is determined by with nations for example Nigeria being especially advantageous to fluoride, wherever the tea is developed – soils that are loaded , Seymour provides. Green tea extract has additionally been accepted as having powerful antibacterial action against a number of the germs that trigger enamel rot – and gum infection therefore much such that it can also be utilized as mouthwash. Please let me know if you need more pics or box dimensions. Pics are taken next to tea light candles to give you an idea of the sizes... but I am always happy to send more pics.
