CHRISTINE MILLER
CHRISTINE MILLER
4 June 1918 - 18 November 1978
VICTIM OF JIM JONES
Christine Miller was a member of the cult, the Peoples Temple under the leadership of Jim Jones.
Miller was born in Brownsville, Texas and joined Jim Jones People Temple in Los Angeles. In 1978, she moved the newly built settlement named Jonestown in Guyana. There were rumours from ex-members that Jones was keeping people there against their will. Congressman Leo Ryan visited Jonestown with reporters as part of an investigation. Numerous Jones followers approached Ryan asking if he could take them with him when he leaves.
Ryan, reporters and defectors went to the airstrip and whilst waiting to leave, a truck drove up and they were shot at by loyal Jones followers. Later that day Jones called his followers to the pavilion and told his followers to drink poisoned Kool Aid. A sound recording of the event survived which features Millers interaction with Jones.  Miller was the only known member who attempted to talk Jones out of it. Miller argued with him and stated that they should instead attempt to go to the Soviet Union; Jones told her it wasn’t feasible. She told Jones, ‘when we destroy ourselves, we are defeated’ and ‘I feel like as long as there is life, there’s hope. That’s my faith’. Miller also argued that the children deserved to live. Another follower Jim McElvane, criticised Miller for arguing with Jones, he told her that she was only standing where she was because of Jones - those in the pavilion applauded him. Miller didn’t give up, she continued to persuade Jones to stop what he was doing and mentioned Jones adopted son, but she was shouted down by his loyal followers.
It is unknown how Miller died that day, whether she was peer pressured into drinking the Kool-Aid or whether they killed her. What we know was that Miller was one of the 908 people that died that day. Miller remains a symbol of courage and is praised for standing up for herself and others, including the children.

Interesting album I picked up recently. I saw a copy and decided I really wanted it but it was more than I wanted to spend. Ended up finding a cheaper(and in new condition) copy on Discogs. I haven’t listened to it yet but I wanted to share this here. This is the last sermon of Jim Jones at the Peoples Temple. November 19, 1978. A very tragic day. This was the date Jones ordered the mass murder-suicide of his followers. Over 900 of his commune died that day, just over 300 were children. Contrary to pop culture beliefs, it was Flavor Aid not Kool-Aid that was laced with cyanide. . This is limited to 1,000 copies. . . . #record #recordalbum #lp #recordcollection #recordcollecting #recording #rare #jimjones #jonestown #cult #cultleader #sermon #peoplestemple (at Cohoes, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfU2MdoJ16i/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I have always been fascinated by cults, along with their leaders, the people that join them, leave them or end up dying in the arms of them. Jonestown: Terror in the Jungle has been on my "need to watch" list for sometime now so tonight's the night ⛪️📖✝️💀📺🎬 #halloween #halloween2020 #everydayishalloween #halloweendecorations #halloweendecor #readyforhalloween #halloweenhouse #jimjones #jonestown #cult #cultleader #cults #jonestownmassacre #peoplestemple #countdowntohalloween #stayspooky #creepinitcreepy #trickortreat #halloweenisalifestyle #creepitreal #happyhalloween #halloweenforever #halloweenlife #ifyougotithauntit #ilovehalloween #halloweenfun #halloweenaccount #spookyseason #spookydecor #halloweenforlife (at Grass Lake, Michigan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CExsf4zlL6l/?igshid=b4j4gv11sf7p

STEPHAN JONES
STEPHAN JONES
Jim Jones
Stephan Jones was the only biological son of Jim Jones and Marceline. Jones, who believed in racial equality, had what he called a ‘rainbow family’.
Jones was the cult leader of the Peoples Temple who eventually had his followers move to Jonestown, an isolated land in Guyana, South America. Stephan was 17 when he moved to Jonestown in 1977, which he initially enjoyed due to the activities and being a part of the community.
Accusations were made about Jim Jones from ex-members, a magazine article was published and ex-members cried for help. Congressman Leo Ryan, journalists and family members went to visit Jonestown. All was going well, until the next day when Jim Jones became paranoid and believed that his community would come to an end. As Ryan, the journalists and defectors went to the airstrip to leave, Jones loyal followers had them killed.
On 18 November 1978, Jones persuaded his 900+ followers to end their lives, many were murdered. Stephan wasn’t at Jonestown at the time of the tragic event. He and his brother Jim Jones, Jr were in Georgetown, Guyanese playing in a basketball competition. That day Stephan had the day off and the team went to the movies. Jim Jones contacted his sons and ordered them back immediately which they refused.
After the tragic event, Stephan spent three months in a Guyana prison as there was an investigation taking place. Jonestown member Sharon Amos and her three children were also in Georgetown were killed. Stephan, of course was innocent, but had to deal with the fact that he lost his family and friends in the worst possible way.
Reflecting, Stephan doesn’t believe there was anything spiritual about his father and he believed his father was superficial and more of an actor. Growing up, he and his siblings saw less and less of their father the more popular the Peoples Temple became. Stephan knows that if he had been in Jonestown that day, he would have also would have to had to taken the drink.
Stephan is trying to do right by the victims by having them remembered as individuals. He spends hours identifying those photos and gives the shots to the California Historical Society. Today he lives in San Francisco and still enjoys playing sport.
