Analysis of the German gay film #freefall / #freierfall PART 1
Tumblr media
For the 10th anniversary (omg! 10 years already!) of one of my favorite movies I decided to make an analysis of the film and especially of the scenes between these two great actors. Max Riemelt and Hanno Koffler. Kay and Marc. Marc and Kay. Yes, I'm in love with both of them. It's a movie that I don't know how many times I've seen that without knowing German I know the dialogues by heart. I hope you appreciate it and above all that this will encourage the fandom and the possible realization of the second part, which I am looking forward to. From time to time I will upload parts analyzing the film from my perspective after having seen it so many times and having understood different nuances over the years.
HERE IT IS PART 1:
Tumblr media
The film begins at the police academy training where we immediately see that, in a practice on the athletics track, Marc is not able to keep up with his teammates and is falling behind until the group is already well ahead of him. While he is panting, he can't take it anymore and just walks while his teammates continue running.
Tumblr media
After this scene we can already appreciate the first moment where the protagonists, Marc and Kay share something more than a shot and that is that (for the moment) they are roommates. Marc decides to get up early for what presumably is to go to practice the speed test that as we have witnessed in the first minutes of the film is one of his weak points. What should be noted, moreover, is that in the first scene of the film, the advanced student at the head of the group of runners is, precisely, Kay. Before Marc leaves the room we already have the first joke of Kay towards Marc where he tells him lying down with a jocular tone "how much God helps the early risers", Marc's response and to which we will have to get used to is to look at Kay and tell him everything with this gesture without uttering a word, but sketching a small smile.
In the next appearance of both, although we already see friction between their bodies, it is not a friendly one, but rather, they are immersed in another police practice, this time with the riot uniform on where they recreate a demonstration and what it would mean to charge against the violent people who confront the police. Kay pretends to be one of them while Marc lines up with another group of comrades making a common police front. Marc takes the lead in the attack after the instructor's express order and it is not quite clear why in the following scene. Kay bursts in with force to take down the policeman who is blocking his way, as it could not be otherwise it is a Marc- Kay melee.
Tumblr media
Why do the two end up arguing and with unbridled aggression? The answer is confusing. Perhaps Marc in an attempt to forget his poor performance in the speed test wants to stand out this time. Albeit in a dirty way, as he achieves his purpose by taking Kay to the ground after kicking him. Or is it just an excuse involving both of them to keep them together because after Kay abruptly gets up from the floor he starts insulting Marc and Marc doesn't stand still, but answers him and confronts him too. Be that as it may, the two are called to attention and forced to pay a visit to the director of the academy to somehow fix what just happened. Without knowing how to answer what happened in this scene, it is certain that their joint reprimand plants the seed of friendship between the police trainees.
Tumblr media
The smoke, the cigarettes and the simple act of smoking embodies the meeting point between the two and for that very reason, blessed tobacco. After having passed by the director's office, they meet again, as if not smoking in the street. And here is the exact moment where the chemistry between them begins. In this scene Kay makes his famous joke towards the head of the academy with his phrase "a real poet that Brandt", jokes that Marc begins to love as he lets out a laugh.
I also want to highlight the small details. The small details are everything. Hence the reason for this analysis. Kay asks Marc if he has a light to light his cigarette and he was about to take Marc's hand where he had the cigarette and bring it close to his to light it, a scene that we will see later on that not only will make Marc slightly uncomfortable, but also shows the unresolved sexual tension between them and how it is precisely the small details that will make them both fall in love with each other. Here comes Marc's forgiveness of Kay for his attitude at practice earlier and his attraction to the blonde-haired man. Kay starts smoking not just any cigarette but a joint. If there is one adjective that defines Kay it is bravery and fearlessness. He is smoking marijuana in the middle of the police academy after having been reprimanded by the director (!!)
Can that turn us on more? Marc also shows that he is not only attracted to this, even if he resists, but that he likes it, because he ends up accepting the puff that Kay offers him. Kay's courage seems to have no limits and they decide to go to the academy pool at night, defying all the rules. Marc keeps asking him if he's crazy, but he follows Kay and they both end up taking a dip in the pool and playing with each other. This scene is THE scene.
Tumblr media
It is because of this scene that their love language begins to develop. All couples have their own language where there are words or even phrases that only they know what they mean. This is where Kay in order to entice Marc to take a bath with him says the "pussy" thing to him, appealing to Marc's masculinity and manliness. Obviously his pride as a man does not allow him to look like a pussy in the eyes of others and that word from Kay will be the impetus to make Marc take action. Throughout the film the word "pussy" will make them both smile at each other when they hear it.

Hello! I’d like help with two male fcs if that is not a problem! Age can be up to 40 since i’m still not sure about their age and ethnicity doesn’t matter! One of them has to have this threatening look, like the kind that looks like could kill you without effort. The other one has to have that “hot, popular guy that everyone wants” vibe! It’s also a big plus if they have resources smoking (specially second guy because that’s important to his story) but not obligatory! Thank you!

Three ships: It's impossible to choose my top three, but ones I'm currently obsessed with are: 1.) Brian and Justin (Britin) from Queer as Folk 2.) Wolfgang/Kala/Rajan from Sense8... well, pretty much every relationship in Sense8. 3.) Ed and Stede (Gentlebeard) from Our Flag Means Death... actually, every couple on OFMD.
First ever ship: Buffy and Angel (Bangel) from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I had no access to any fandom then, so my first ship in a fandom space was Emma and Regina (SwanQueen) from Once Upon a Time. EDIT: My first true ship was probably Alanna and George from Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness Quartet books.
Last song: "Oh Please (Acoustic)" by Tom Grennan. His new album is great. Go check it out.
Last film: El Baile De Los 41 on Netflix. It's a sad queer film based on true historical events. I highly recommend watching it if you need a good cry.
Last reading: Amongst a slew of fan-fiction, I'm reading a book that was written by an acquaintance. I'm not enjoying it. It's very awkward because he talked about citing me as an author who enjoyed his books. I'm not sure I can do that, as it's a rough read so far. Plus, the only things I've written in 15 years have been fan-fiction and medical conference speeches. I don't know why he thinks I'd be considered an authority on writing or influential to readers. Maybe I was marginally, once upon a time, but I'm certainly not now.
Currently watching: Schlafende Hunde on Netflix. Another stellar performance from Max Riemelt. I look forward to where it's going. Also Dimension 20's Dungeons and Drag Queens on Dropout TV. It's so good so far.
Currently consuming: Water, though I just realized I haven't eaten in almost 20 hours, so I need to grab food for sure.
Currently craving: All the chocolate and red meat. I'm PMSing.
The only people I could think of to tag have already completed or been tagged in this. If you see mine and want to play along, feel free to do so. Tag me in your post so I can see it!

#I don’t care about him being shirtless but he’s got a gentleness to his face that I very much enjoy looking at @oh2e
he does doesn't he -- think that's why he works (max riemelt that is, but also the character).
he also enjoys pretty people (of course, he is a pretty person, but that's incidental)
it's so important to me that wolfgang cannot dance for shit, but he will take his shirt off to make up for it

We do not understand the scale of the problem of the secret relationship between Marc and Kay until we see this scene.
Tumblr media
On the one hand, Marc is afraid that Kay will delathe him in revenge mode and tell him about his relationship with everyone in the academy.
Tumblr media
Kay is the one who suffers the most, because apart from being harassed and removed from the rest in the academy, he suffers from being in love with someone who never belonged to him.
Tumblr media
Then this Britt, who was deceived by her relationship with Kay after she discovered it.
Tumblr media
And finally we have Gregor's homophobic, who serves as a time bomb waiting to explode against Kay.
In the end, Marc and Kay's only mistake was to fall in love

“Zwei zu Eins” (“Two to One”) still topping the German Indie cinema box office, passing the 200,000 viewers mark in its 2nd week ❤️
(I almost missed this great interview Max did with Switzeland’s OutNow.ch👇)
Q: Even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the film - what is your favourite “2:1" in football history?
Max: Oh. I definitely love watching football and used to play it myself. To answer the question: I like the games that are decided 2:1 in the last few minutes. (laughs)
Q: The characters in the film find this huge mountain of money. Were you tempted to play Uncle Scrooge and swim in it?
Max: Yes, we made that dream come true. Even though there were no coins in that mountain of money, it was harder than we thought. It was also a nice get-together with co-stars Ronald Zehrfeld, Sandra HĂźller and Peter Kurth. And because you'll probably never get an opportunity like that again, I also took my daughter to swim in that mountain of money.
Q: The protagonists don't know at the beginning that the money still has value. Stealing it is actually pretty stupid. What is the stupidest thing you have ever taken with you?
Max: The stupidest thing was probably pens from a stationery store. Things that you didn't actually need, but as a child you stole them as part of a dare.
Q: If you were in the shoes of your character Robert and suddenly had a lot of money: what would you buy first?
Max: I would probably fulfil my family's every wish first. If they are doing well, I automatically feel much better too. You could support a lot of people with that kind of money, for example through charities. That would probably be the most satisfying. And then maybe a house with direct access to the sea.
Q: So, Max Riemelt seems quite similar to Robert.
Max: Absolutely, I identified with the character very quickly. He is a total family man, with community spirit and always has justice in mind. The character's solution-oriented way of thinking really appealed to me.
Q: Did you take one of the banknotes home with you as a souvenir?
Max: I actually took several and gave them away. They were specially produced and printed for the film with great attention to detail.
Q: Did you also take 200 and 500 notes with you, which officially never actually existed?
Max: Yes, of course I had to have them. (laughs)
Q: Natja Brunckhorst (director) first made a name for herself as an actress - especially with her leading role in “Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo”. Do you notice a difference if the director came from an acting background?
Max: Definitely. Such directors have a special appreciation for the profession of acting as they are aware of what acting means. Natja is also a sensitive person and idealistic like the characters in “Two to One”. In this film she underlines people's inner values and shows what we are increasingly losing today - but without wagging a moral finger. The story is a nice metaphor for how idiotic this hunt for money and people's reaction to money can be sometimes.
Q: Because “Zwei zu Eins” is about how something was sold below its value: Which films you acted in that performed below their value, and you hope movie fans will discover?
Max: I thought “13 Semester” was a very funny comedy, but I don't know exactly how many people watched it. I also think“Tage die Bleiben” (Eng title: “A Family of Three”) is good, or “Lichtgestalten” (Eng Title: “Icons of Light”) because it's a very abstract film. And “Kopfplatzen” (Eng Title: “Headburst”), which deals with a taboo subject that needs to be talked about in order to prevent it. These are all relatively small (budget) films, but they are slowly finding their audience.

although i generally prefer the idea that the aesthetic of clint’s childhood is perpetually trapped in the “vaguely 1950s” (as portrayed in blindspot and  hawkeye #19) because of marvel’s sliding timescale, someone reblogging this post reminded me--
if i had the time and ep files, i think this would make a good repurposed footage gifset of a young teen clint (12-14) on the outskirts of carny life:

Will I be able to eloquently and accurately thank everyone who was involved with Sense8, to thank everyone who is in this fandom, my cluster from all over the world? Probably not. But I will be doing so anyways. You all have changed me. You all saved me in ways you will never know and a simple thank you will never be enough. I will always, always be part of this cluster. Berlin Syndrome is a 2017 Australian psychological thriller, based upon the novel of the same name by Melanie Joosten. Clare, a young Australian tourist, is backpacking around Germany, taking photographs of architecture and exploring shops. In Berlin, she meets a local named Andi (Max Riemelt), a highschool teacher, and has a one-night stand with him. The next morning, however, she finds that he has locked her in his apartment…

Wait, hold up, who’s in it?!
Ok, confession time.  I saw the original Matrix movie in the theaters, and I thought it was pretty good.  Neat concept.  Great visuals.  Keanu being Keanu.  I thought Trinity’s romantic interest in Neo at the end there seemed a little forced and clichéd, but whatever.  It was the late 90s; BtVS was considered progressive feminism at the time.   Point is, I liked it, but it didn’t rock my world.  Then all the pseudo-intellectual ragey nerd boys started gatekeeping on it, so by the time the sequels came out, I was totally turned off to the whole phenomenon and never bothered to see them.
Years passed, Keanu turned out to be so much more than a pretty face, and 1st Lana, then Lilly Wachowski transitioned, which put the movie(s) in an interesting new context. And during this time, they teamed up with J. Michael Stranzisky to make Sense8, which rocked my world so hard that I re-watch it every June to celebrate Pride, even though I’m just an ally (mostly. heh).
So the new Matrix: Resurrections trailer came out, everyone went nuts, and I thought, I should maybe give this another chance.  Nerd boys don’t scare me any more.  I’ve literally birthed and raised two of them since the original Matrix, and this new generation has been instilled with greater empathy and better manners.  But I digress.
THE POINT IS, APPARENTLY FOUR OF MY BELOVEDS FROM SENSE8 WILL BE IN THE NEW MOVIE:
ErĂŠndira Ibarra
Tumblr media
Max Riemelt (every time I eat a German Pink Johnson tomato I think of him fondly)
Tumblr media
Toby Onwumere
Tumblr media
and Brian J. Smith
Tumblr media
OMGGGGGG, I CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE TO COME OUT NOW!!!111!1!
And, y’know, Christina Ricci and a bunch of other cool people are in it, too.  And I hear that Keanu Reeves guy is pretty good.  Whatever.  Get those babies back on my screen ASAP.
