(I finally managed to add auto-generated subs so yayyy)
“At the beginning we watched some interviews, testimonies of people whose faces were blurred, people who were talking about their everyday life. I quickly realized that I didn’t want to go down that path. The most significant part of my preparation was running every morning, like meditation. While running I was asking myself questions to which I had to answer, like why I was making this film, so as to be able to answer the questions journalist and the audience would ask about this film. And this is how I found answers. I also wanted to completely avoid any cliches. It was important to me to do this person justice without betraying him, to understand how he feels so that the audience wouldn’t be afraid of him but rather understand him. And of course it was good to have someone who trusts me. For me the most important thing was the confidence I felt in that situation. I don’t have the technique, I haven’t been to drama school, it’s always about a situation that you work out together (with your director). As long as I have trust I’m willing to do anything and open myself up.”

Translating from French:
"In the past we had worked together on a film about the constitution (GG 19 - Eine Reise durch Deutschland in 19 Artikeln). Thanks to our collaboration I knew I had someone I could absolutely trust, I knew I was talking to a friend and when he showed me the script it was important to know that I could rely on him. In general I had many doubts, I didn't know how this would be received, it was a big taboo, and yet I had a feeling that I absolutely had to do this."
A small event at the Goethe Institut Paris that I was lucky enough to attend. We were still wearing masks back then. Thank God Max took off his to talk to us.

“Zwei zu Eins” (“Two to One”) still topping the German Indie cinema box office, passing the 200,000 viewers mark in its 2nd week ❤️
(I almost missed this great interview Max did with Switzeland’s OutNow.ch👇)
Q: Even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the plot of the film - what is your favourite “2:1" in football history?
Max: Oh. I definitely love watching football and used to play it myself. To answer the question: I like the games that are decided 2:1 in the last few minutes. (laughs)
Q: The characters in the film find this huge mountain of money. Were you tempted to play Uncle Scrooge and swim in it?
Max: Yes, we made that dream come true. Even though there were no coins in that mountain of money, it was harder than we thought. It was also a nice get-together with co-stars Ronald Zehrfeld, Sandra Hüller and Peter Kurth. And because you'll probably never get an opportunity like that again, I also took my daughter to swim in that mountain of money.
Q: The protagonists don't know at the beginning that the money still has value. Stealing it is actually pretty stupid. What is the stupidest thing you have ever taken with you?
Max: The stupidest thing was probably pens from a stationery store. Things that you didn't actually need, but as a child you stole them as part of a dare.
Q: If you were in the shoes of your character Robert and suddenly had a lot of money: what would you buy first?
Max: I would probably fulfil my family's every wish first. If they are doing well, I automatically feel much better too. You could support a lot of people with that kind of money, for example through charities. That would probably be the most satisfying. And then maybe a house with direct access to the sea.
Q: So, Max Riemelt seems quite similar to Robert.
Max: Absolutely, I identified with the character very quickly. He is a total family man, with community spirit and always has justice in mind. The character's solution-oriented way of thinking really appealed to me.
Q: Did you take one of the banknotes home with you as a souvenir?
Max: I actually took several and gave them away. They were specially produced and printed for the film with great attention to detail.
Q: Did you also take 200 and 500 notes with you, which officially never actually existed?
Max: Yes, of course I had to have them. (laughs)
Q: Natja Brunckhorst (director) first made a name for herself as an actress - especially with her leading role in “Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo”. Do you notice a difference if the director came from an acting background?
Max: Definitely. Such directors have a special appreciation for the profession of acting as they are aware of what acting means. Natja is also a sensitive person and idealistic like the characters in “Two to One”. In this film she underlines people's inner values and shows what we are increasingly losing today - but without wagging a moral finger. The story is a nice metaphor for how idiotic this hunt for money and people's reaction to money can be sometimes.
Q: Because “Zwei zu Eins” is about how something was sold below its value: Which films you acted in that performed below their value, and you hope movie fans will discover?
Max: I thought “13 Semester” was a very funny comedy, but I don't know exactly how many people watched it. I also think“Tage die Bleiben” (Eng title: “A Family of Three”) is good, or “Lichtgestalten” (Eng Title: “Icons of Light”) because it's a very abstract film. And “Kopfplatzen” (Eng Title: “Headburst”), which deals with a taboo subject that needs to be talked about in order to prevent it. These are all relatively small (budget) films, but they are slowly finding their audience.
#max riemelt#zwei zu eins#so he LIKES to watch football 👀#and he loves a house by the sea… awww#so cute that he took his daughter to see the mountain of fake banknotes#love that he continues to plug those good indie films#i’d also add heiter bis wolkig as a underrated comedy#max german interview

More highlights - from Max’s latest podcast on Spielplatz - part 3 (NB: they recorded this podcast last year before the release of Matrix Resurrections)
About playing a controversial character in Kopfplatzen/Head Burst:
Moderator: As an actor, do you see yourself as a mouthpiece, that you are giving such extreme characters a stage?
Max: I’ve always found it exciting to portray the conflicts in people. I'm not the author. I am not the inventor of this role. That was my friend Savas, who also directed it, who came up with it. I'm just forever grateful that he has so much trust or sees something in me to do it well - He kind of wrote the role for me, because for him, it was important to show that someone like me, who comes across as rather gentle, or always seems trustworthy and innocent, just because his face is symmetric. To break this cliché and build this emotional bridge so viewers finally understand, what it must mean to be born with it. Or what it must feel like to have someone like that in your family. How do you deal with it. You can't just write him off as a person just because he has something in him. I don't think anyone would do that.
How did you get involved in the new Matrix?
Max: I don't want to diminish or downplay it at all, because it’s also a relatively small role. But of course it has to do with the Sense8 series and getting to know Lana. We became friends and in this case, she more or less created this role for me. It's a form of recognition that I appreciate the most, because it really has to do with friendship and trust. And the desire to continue working together. It was kind of a gift for me. The fact that it's Matrix only makes me happier because a lot of people are proud of me because of it. Me too.
For me it was like a family reunion because we travelled the world and really got to know each other and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lana is also someone who puts quality of life at the centre of her work.
Dreams and then future:
Moderator: Are there any dreams that you still like to realise one day?
Max: I'm more the ‘goes with the flow’ type, but I've already noticed that I might want to do something of my own, especially when it comes to the medium. I just did a sculpture class. That was really cool, because I wanted to do something for myself. I don't want to be too specific, because I'm afraid of building up pressure on myself. But yes.
On being an actor and what is success:
Max: … I think today the consumer behavior has become completely different and accordingly, everything has become much more fast-paced. I think people now realised that it's just foolish to think, "If I'm successful now, people will remember me and I'll always be happy." But that is a brief and intense bliss. It doesn't necessarily speak for what it really is. Because everyone sees something different in what you did or wants to see it differently. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with what you actually did.
First and foremost, (as actor) I'm more of a tool, I see myself as a person who has a vision and I can't overestimate that either, always have to see for what it is. I was lucky to be allowed to embody that. If people find it extremely good, then I'm happy that it works. But if there's nothing else in life, it's a very fragile thing. It's like those likes on Instagram. I don't understand why people are so proud of it, why certain people follow them. When they're getting off on these attractive pictures, which come from a completely different direction, edited with a filter somehow. That's a big misunderstanding (or misrepresentation?) and as a result, leading people to live out of touch with reality.
How about his own instagram then?
Moderator 1: Is that an area you keep your hands off? You have an account on Instagram, I checked it, and you have 608,000 followers, without running it yourself. Is that something that is brought to you because a team is doing it for you?
Moderator 2: Did you know that at all?
Max: Yes. I think it's good that it's being done. It's a fan club that was founded when I first started, funnily enough. When I was 13, they were relatively young as well, just a year older than me. They decided to start a fan club because they think what I do and how I do it is great. I still have a really good relationship with them today and they do my fan mail.
Moderator 2: how nice.
Moderator 1: that’s really cool.
Max: They promote it. This is voluntary. There's no money involved, it's just because they think what I do is great. I'm very grateful for that. We help each other as best we can.
Moderator 2: Best wishes to you, who do this.
Max: Exactly.
Moderator 1: That’s great. To Patrick.
Max: And to Michael from Berlin.
