In theory there could be an option E where no one upgrades to a new OS and we keep Microsoft hostage into keeping support (if I recall correctly, Microsoft released a patch for the security hole which was exploited by WannaCry ransomware after its support ended), but in practice this is essentially prisoner's dilemma, so I don't expect this to be exactly doable.
(also I tried to find the exact reason for why W11 has such high requirements and it seems to be something that could be just optional?)
I talked about the problem of Windows system requirements being too damn high before, and how the windows 10 to 11 jump is especially bad. Like the end of Windows 10 is coming october 2025, and it will be a massive problem. And this article gives us some concrete numbers for how many computers that can't update from win10 to 11.
And it's 240 million. damn. “If these were all folded laptops, stacked one on top of another, they would make a pile 600 km taller than the moon.” the tech analysis company quoted in the article explains.
So many functioning computers that will be wasted. And it's all because people don't wanna switch to a Linux distro with sane system requirements and instead buy a new computer.
Like if you own one of these 240 million windows 10 computers, Just be an environmentally responsible non-wasteful person and switch that computer to Linux instead of just scrapping it because Microsoft says it's not good enough.
Edit: as have been pointed out multiple times in the replies. It's really not "all because people don't wanna switch to a linux distro." It's really Microsoft's fault for this form of planned obsolescence.
My original post was lacking in perspective at best. And of course, people who use computers for work are often made reliant on Windows by their job and employers and can't switch. Or lack time, resources, and information to make the switch. Which is also due to systemic issues, such as lack of education, and the culture of obfuscation about tech that tech companies create.

disclaimer that im not super well versed in santae so pls correct me if im wrong or out of the loop on things /genuine i would love to hear back on what im about to word salad about as it has been rattling in my brain for a minute.
idk how much of a fair comparison this is but i feel like pawborough is the antithesis or at least a sort of mirror to santae in the way both are projects spearheaded by a single person. i think a major source of santae's problems is the fact that it has been in development for over 10 years and is operating with some extremely outdated philosophies. i know they aren't in the same petsim niches (neoclone versus rpg), but things like the premium renaming on santae feel indicative of that. i cant think of any RECENT petsim that has taken that direction. it could be just that i'm not looking in the right places, (neoclones never interested me) but a lot of the examples of sites that have renaming cost premium i've seen mentioned even on this blog are also on the older side. the fact that artists are getting paid at such low rates also feels like a holdover from the early days of petsims when things were much cheaper to produce (though i've heard people say rates THAT low were always considered pretty bad even back then).
definitely correct me if im wrong here, but i feel like the only new thing santae has really done is present itself as vehemently anti-retirement and not have a lot of KS exclusives. i'm pretty sure all the KS campaigns of petsims post-FR that i've ever heard of used some kind of exclusivity model, including pawborough. how this will eventually play out for santae is something that intrigues me, and if it proves to be a boon and not a detriment, i'll likely be happy to see future projects do something similar. but outside of that, santae to me sounds like its trying to be a modernized version of older style petsims, but it hasn't fully let go of aspects that more recent games have let go of/improved upon for good reason.
meanwhile, and i fully admit im biased because this is the project i've been following more closely, pawborough has always felt like it's trying to be more fresh and innovative. it started as a "FRclone" so to speak (three poses per breed, three slots for colors, each slot having different patterning genes, a color wheel for breeding, and some early web layout mockups were very similar to FR). it had its own stuff going on yes but personally, that was a big part of the appeal in pawborough at the time of the KS. i liked FR and i liked cats, why not have both? but over the course of its development so much has changed. theres a new color system for breeding, the site layout doesnt scream FR anymore, there's a stronger focus on the rpg mechanics, and much more. plus, if staff is to be believed, they have always paid their artists significantly better, allegedly starting at $50 per asset. and that number has gone up recently with plans to pay them even more once the site launches with premium purchases. now i will say some changes on pawborough has led some to people say it went from copying FR to copying another cat based rpg, Pixel Cat's End, and ehhh while I can see it my main point is that pawborough has evolved significantly since it started development, and i think it has benefited from it. not to mention, MANY of these changes were results of user feedback. (which isnt to say i haven't heard of santae changing things in response to feedback either, but it sounds like theres usually some initial resistance while with pawborough feedback generally feels like its being taken in stride and is seriously being considered.)
again, people who have been following santae for longer i would love to hear about their development journey and what they're trying improve on in the petsim landscape. i would love to check out a fresher take on a neopets style game with allll the QOL 2020s web design can provide. i just dont want to get in the discord or trawl through old posts on socials which are mostly just promotional adverts from what i can tell. sorry if this all sounds stupid i should be sleeping but i needed to get this out of my head!!! thank you fellow saltheads 💜

hey, i started following you recently and ur bio says ur a hacker? any tips on where to start? hacking seems like a v cool/fun way to learn more abt coding and cybersecurity/infrastructure and i'd like to explore it but there's so much on the internet and like, i'm not trying to get into anything illegal. thanks!
huh, an interesting question, ty!
i can give more tailored advice if you hit me up on chat with more specifics on your background/interests.
given what you've written here, though, i'll just assume you don't have any immediate professional aspirations (e.g. you just want to learn some things, and you aren't necessarily trying to get A Cyber Security Job TM within the next three months or w/e), and that you don't know much about any specific programming/computering domain yet.
(stuff under cut because long)
first i'd probably just try to pick some interesting problem that you think you can solve with tech. this doesn't need to be a "hacking" project at first; i was just messing around with computers for ages before i did anything involving security/exploitation.
if you don't already know how to program, you should ideally pick a problem you can solve via programming. for instance: i learned a lot back in the 2000s, when play-by-post forum RPGs were in vogue.  see, i'd already been messing around, building my own personal sites, first just with HTML & CSS, and later on with Javascript and PHP.   and i knew the forum software everyone used (InvisionPowerBoard) was written in PHP.  so when one of the admins at my RPG complained that they'd like the ability to set multiple profile pictures, i was like, "hey i'm good at programming, want me to create a mod to do that," and then i just... did. so then they asked me to program more features, and i got all the sexy nerd cred for being Forum Mod Queen, and it was a good time, i learned a lot.
(i also got to be the person who was frantically IMed at 2am because wtf the forum is down and there's an inscrutable error, what do??? basically sysadmining! also, much less sexy! still, i learned a lot!)
the key thing is that it's gotta be a problem that's interesting to you: as much as i love making dorky sites in PHP, half the fun was seeing other people using my stuff, and i think the era of forum-based RPGs has passed. but maybe you can apply some programming talents to something that you are interested in—maybe you want to make a silly Chrome extension to make people laugh, a la Cloud to Butt, or maybe you'd like to make a program that converts pixel art into cross-stitching patterns, maybe you want to just make a cool adventure game on those annoying graphing calculators they make you use in class, or make a script for some online game you play, or make something silly with Arduino (i once made a trash can that rolled toward me when i clapped my hands; it was fun, and way easier than you'd think!), whatever.
i know a lot of hacker-types who got their start doing ROM hacking for video games—replacing the character art or animations or whatever in old NES games. that's probably more relevant than the PHP websites, at least, and is probably a solid place to get started; in my experience those communities tend to be reasonably friendly to questions. pick a small thing you want to do & ask how to do it.
also, a somewhat unconventional path, but—once i knew how to program a bit of Python, i started doing goofy junk, like, "hey can i implemented NamedTuple from scratch,” which tends to lead to Python metaprogramming, which leads to surprising shit like "oh, stack frames are literally just Python objects and you can manually edit them in the interpreter to do deliberately horrendous/silly things, my god this language allows too much reflection and i'm having too much fun"... since Python is a lot of folks' first language these days, i thought i'd point that out, since i think this is a pretty accessible start to thinking about How Programs Actually Work under the hood. allison kaptur has some specific recommendations on how to poke around, if you wanna go that route.
it's reasonably likely you'll end up doing something "hackery" in the natural course of just working on stuff. for instance, while i was working on the IPB forum software mods, i became distressed to learn that everyone was using an INSECURE version of the software! no one was patching their shit!! i yelled at the admins about it, and they were like "well we haven't been hacked yet so it's not a problem," so i uh, decided to demonstrate a proof of concept? i downloaded some sketchy perl script, kicked it until it worked, logged in as the admins, and shitposted a bit before i logged out, y'know, to prove my point.
(they responded by banning me for two weeks, and did not patch their software. which, y'know, rip to them; they got hacked by an unrelated Turkish group two months later, and those dudes just straight-up deleted the whole website. i was a merciful god by comparison!)
anyway, even though downloading a perl script and just pointing it at a website isn't really "hacking" (it's the literal definition of script kiddie, heh)—the point is i was just experimenting a lot and trying a lot of stuff, which meant i was getting comfortable with thinking of software as not just some immutable relic, but something you can touch and prod in unexpected ways.
this dovetails into the next thing, which is like, just learn a lot of stuff. a boring conventional computer science degree will teach you a lot (provided you take it seriously and actually try to learn shit); alternatively, just taking the same classes as a boring conventional computer science degree, via edX or whatever free online thingy, will also teach you a lot. ("contributing to open source" also teaches you a lot but... hngh... is a whole can of worms; send a follow-up ask if you want that rant.)
here's where i should note that "hacking" is an impossibly broad category: the kind of person who knows how to fuck with website authentication tokens is very different than someone who writes a fuzzer, who is often quite different than someone who looks at the bug a fuzzer produces and actually writes a program that can exploit that bug... so what you focus on depends on what you're interested in. i imagine classes with names like "compilers," "operating systems," and "networking" will teach you a lot. but, like, idk, all knowledge is god-breathed and good for teaching. hell, i hear some universities these days have actual computer security classes? that's probably a good thing to look at, just to get a sense of what's out there, if you already know how to program.
also be comfortable with not knowing everything, but also, learn as you go. the bulk of my security knowledge came when i got kinda airdropped into a work team that basically hired me entirely on "potential" (lmao), and uh, prior to joining i only had the faintest idea what a hypervisor was? or the whole protection ring concept? or ioctls or sandboxing or threat models or, fuck, anything? i mostly just pestered people with like 800 questions and slowly built up a knowledge base, and remember being surprised & delighted when i went to a security conference a year later and could follow most of the talks, and when i wound up at a bar with a guy on the xbox security team and we compared our security models a bunch, and so on.  there wasn't a magic moment when i "got it", i was just like, "okay huh this dude says he found a ring-0 exploit... what does that mean... okay i think i got that... why is that a big deal though... better ask somebody.." (also: reading an occasional dead tree book is a good idea. i owe my firstborn to Robert Love's Linux Kernel Development, as outdated as it is, and also O'Reilly's kookaburra book gave me a great overview of web programming back in the day, etc.  you can learn a lot by just clicking around random blogs, but you’ll often end up with a lot of random little facts and no good mental scaffolding for holding it together; often, a decent book will give you that scaffolding.)
(also, it's pretty useful if you can find a knowledgable someone to pepper with random questions as you go. finding someone who will actively mentor you is tricky, but most working computery folks are happy to tell you things like "what you're doing is actually impossible, here's why," or "here's a tutorial someone told me was good for learning how to write a linux kernel module," or "here's my vague understanding of this concept you know nothing about," or "here's how you automate something to click on a link on a webpage," which tends to be handier than just google on its own.)
if you're reading this and you're like "ok cool but where's the part where i'm handed a computer and i gotta break in while going all hacker typer”—that's not the bulk of the work, alas! like, for sure, we do have fun pranking each other by trying dumb ways of stealing each other's passwords or whatever (once i stuck a keylogger in a dude's keyboard, fun times). but a lot of my security jobs have involved stuff like, "stare at this disassembly a long fuckin' time to figure out how the program pointer got all fucked up," or, "write a fuzzer that feeds a lot of randomized input to some C++ program, watch the program crash because C++ is a horrible language for writing software, go fix all the bugs," or "think Really Hard TM about all the settings and doohickeys this OS/GPU/whatever has, think about all the awful things someone could do with it, threat model and sandbox accordingly." occasionally i have done cool proof-of-concept hacks but honestly writing exploits can kinda be tedious, lol, so like, i'm only doing that if it's the only way i can get people to believe that Yes This Is Actually A Problem, Fix Your Code
"lua that's cool and all but i wanted, like, actual links and recommendations and stuff" okay, fair. here's some ideas:
microcorruption: very fun embedded security CTF; teaches you everything you need to know as you're doing it.
cryptopals crypto challenges: very fun little programming exercises that teach you a lot of fundamental cryptography concepts as you're going along! you can do these even as a bit of a n00b; i did them in Python for the lulz
the binary bomb lab is hilariously copied by, like, so many CS programs, lol, but for good reason. it's accessible and fun and is the first time most people get to feel like a real hacker! (requires you know a bit of C beforehand)
ctftime is a good way to see when new CTFs ("capture the flag"s; security-focused competitions) are coming up. or, sometimes CTFs post their source code, so you can continue trying them after the CTF is over. i liked Stripe's CTFs when they were going, because they focused on "web stuff", and "web stuff" was all i really knew at the time. if you're more interested in staring at disassembly, there's CTFs focused on that sort of thing too.
azeria has good ARM assembly & exploitation tutorials
also, like, lots of good talks out there; just watching defcon/cansecwest/etc talks until something piques your interest is very fun. i'd die on a battlefield for any of Christopher Domas's talks, but he assumes a lot of specific x86/OS knowledge, lol, so maybe don’t start with that. oh, Julia Evans's blog is honestly probably pretty good for just learning a lot of stuff and really beginner-friendly?
oh and wrt legality... idk, i haven't addressed it here since it hasn't come up in my own work much, tbh. if you're just getting started you're kind of unlikely to Break The Law without, y'know, realizing maybe you're doing something a bit gray-area? and you can cross that bridge when you come to it? Real Hacking TM is way more of a pain-in-the-ass than doing CTFs and such, and you'll learn way more with the latter, so who cares lol just do the fun thing

Fanfiction.net doesn't seem to have changed since 2008, and its design was already outdated by then. It'll always have a place in my heart as the site where I started falling in love with fanfic and writing it (badly and rarely at the time) but I sure am not interested in going back. Let's look at some things:
Default font is too small, optimised for tiny low-res displays that we don't really have like that anymore. Yes, we have lots of ways to change it, but defaults matter.
It just looks old and crufty. It feels old. Frankly, it looks like friggin' Dreamwidth or something.
Sorting and tagging is very deficient. Characters and whole shows only exist if the site's operators have heard of them. The restrictive pairing system is not intuitive. It's impossible to tag anything about content beyond the genre (and rating) at all.
Uploading a fanfic is a chore. The separate document manager may be useful for some people, but for me, who writes offline and then pastes it in there, it's just an additional step that's annoying and that you can get wrong.
No clean overview over how my stories are doing. I know I shouldn't care about that and just write and publish for the love of the game, but it's hard, and sometimes I just want to see number go up. But it's all divided between Legacy Stats and Story Stats, and finding the reviews for my stories is something else again.
The user section is just too complex and annoying. Why is there a polls feature? Why are Publish and DocX two separate things?
None of these things are dealbreakers, frankly. People have been using this site for decades and somehow still continue to do so. But all of them serve to make the site just a little bit more annoying than it needs to be, and in a world where Ao3 exists, that's an issue.
If you have a specific complain about their design features, tell me in replies and tags. I'll be redesigning one of these websites for my User Experience class, so I'd love to hear complains from the actual users. Thanks!

Chrome vs Firefox: Is Firefox better than Chrome?
Tumblr media
Let us answer the age-old question "Is Firefox better than Chrome?". Web browsers give us a gateway to the world of the internet and when it comes to web browsers, there are mainly two contenders on the run, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. While Chrome has been the go-to browser for many, Mozilla Firefox wants you to think again. In this blog, we will be setting up the all-time favorite Google Chrome against the challenger Mozilla Firefox for this face-off.
Table of Content
Brief History
Security and Privacy
User Interface
Utility
Speed and Performance
Portability
The Final Verdict
Brief History
Tumblr media
Google Chrome
Google Chrome is a web browser developed by Google publicly released on September 2, 2008, for the Windows operating system. It was developed using the source code from its existing project "Chromium". It took Google more than a year to make its way to other OS platforms like macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, etc.
Google CEO at the time Eric Schmidt opposed an idea of an unconventional browser in the beginning. The co-founders of Google hired some of the developers of Mozilla Firefox to build a demo version of Chrome which caused a change in perspective for the Google CEO. As of March of 2021, Chrome has a 66% browser market share for PC users, 43.33% for Mobile users which is as nearly as Safari Browser and occupies and at a total of 63.59% across all platforms.
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Firefox is also known as "Firefox Browser", is a free and open-source web browser developed by the Mozilla Foundation in 2002 under the codename "Phoenix". Firefox proved to be a worthy opponent to then-dominant Internet Explorer 6 as it had better speed performance, security, and add-ons.
The first three versions of Firefox came in 2004, 2006, and 2008 which took the market share for Firefox to about 30% among the internet users. Firefox saw its peak usage of 32.21% by the end of the year 2009.
As of March 2021, Mozilla Firefox has an 8.17% browser market share for PC users making it the third most popular browser with Safari coming in second place (10.27%). Mozilla Firefox occupies a total of 3.76% across all platforms.
Security and Privacy
Tumblr media
Mozilla Firefox has an ETP (Enhanced Tracking Protection) feature in its security settings enabled by default. This feature automatically blocks abuses (around 2000 of them) like Social Media tracking from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn which is used for serving targeted ads based on the website that users visit. It is easier to check on trackers and cookies used on a website by clicking the shield-icon near the URL. Mozilla Firefox's Firefox Monitor is a great addition to the feature list. It automatically notifies its users of a password breach or outdated passwords.
“At Mozilla, we believe that privacy is fundamental to a healthy internet.”
Chrome on the other hand provides a safe browser to its user but in a questionable manner. It sends a "Do not track" signal as users browse the internet which is less secure than Firefox's ETP.
Chrome has a reputation for collecting personal data like locations, search history, site visits in the name of improving services.  Google's parent company Alphabet, makes billions of dollars in online ad revenue every quarter. It has to get its data from somewhere, doesn't it?. The collected data has been accused of being used for marketing purposes in recent times.
The Winner: Firefox
User Interface
Tumblr media
A web browser can have all the features in the world but if User Interface (UI) is terrible then nobody will use it. Both Chrome and Firefox have undergone massive changes in UI to keep up with the modern-day trends and as a result, have reached a new level for browser experience. Mozilla Firefox is very elegant and clean in design. New users can adapt quickly to different features and functions it offers. Unlike competitor Chrome, Firefox has solved the problem of tab management perfectly. Users can easily manage multiple tasks simultaneously by grouping tabs which gives a hassle-free UI experience. Firefox offers horizontal scrolling as well that helps a ton with navigation. The user can also opt to zoom out in such scenarios to view the entire site.
Google Chrome has many features similar to Mozilla Firefox but, the way Chrome is able to present its feature is next level compared to Firefox. Everything is managed in sections and is searchable.
The bookmarks system, settings manager, and developer tools in Chrome are just better. However, Firefox wins the extension management race. Tab management in Chrome is below par when compared with Firefox by default. But there a few extensions (OneTab) that can make tab management in Chrome even better than Firefox. The Winner: Google Chrome
Utility
Tumblr media
Chrome's catalog of extensions vastly outnumbers that of any browser with built-in integration services for Google services like Gmail, Google Docs etc.
Firefox although not as extensive as Chrome, also offers a wide variety of useful extensions through its huge number of contributors. If you like working with tons of tabs then the Horizontal Scrolling feature may be what you are looking for. While Chrome shrinks down all the open tabs to a size where only its favicon is visible, Firefox offers horizontal scrolling on all open tabs to display full details. Firefox also offers an in-browser screenshot tool which comes really handy when researching or studying whereas for Chrome you will need an extra extension to achieve the same feature. When it comes to customizability, Firefox wins over Chrome hands down. Firefox allows its users to move around and arrange most of its UI components that fit their needs. Chrome on the other hand allows users to hide a few components but that is not much of flexibility.
The Winner: Firefox
Speed and Performance
Tumblr media
Speed and Performance have to be one of the most compared stat between browsers. Even if the browser lacks extra features or extensions, having a blazing speed and performance would be enough for many.
Response time and data fetching are very fast in Firefox Browsers mostly for people who work on multiple tabs. Firefox is well equipped with heavy load handling as it is capable of RAM management by applying restrictions. For mobile devices, however, a Firefox browser is not recommended.
Chrome a.k.a RAM Hogger performs below par mainly because of its RAM consumption issues. It requires a huge amount of RAM while operating or while in the background and performs very badly on low-end devices whereas Firefox will work at a decent rate on low-end devices.
The Winner: Firefox
Portability
Both Firefox and Chrome are cross-platform meaning they are both available on the majority of Desktop operating systems (macOS, Linux, Windows) and mobile operating systems (iOS, Android).
While both allow its users to sync passwords, bookmarks, extensions, and settings across multiple devices on multiple platforms, The mighty Chrome lacks a key feature that Firefox provides which is the added security of a primary password. The primary password keeps all the logins and passwords saved by a user under additional security.
Chrome transfers all the open tabs to other devices automatically. Mozilla on the other hand has to do it manually. There are use cases where both are ideal like continue reading an article would be great if you are switching device with automatic tab opening and you do not want all your open tabs to open on another device if you are just switching devices.
The Winner: Firefox
The Final Verdict
It would be fair to say that both Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome are really neck to neck in most aspects of our comparisons. While Google has a thin edge over Firefox on utility based on the number of extensions, FIrefox makes up for it in other ways. In terms of Privacy, there is no doubt that Firefox is the king. Firefox has been heavily committed to preserving user's online data and providing protection services.
The final winner: Firefox

Broadband: Understanding the Jargon And exactly how to obtain the Best Prepare
When you find yourself examining this short article on the internet, then odds have you been are no stranger on the extensive wilderness that's the internet. Uploads, downloads, weblogs, films, podcasts, pics, message boards, game titles, information, e mail, animation, flash, webmail, webcams and tunes can all make for an enormous and limitless genuine-time ecosystem that is continually altering. It is commonly the seemingly inexhaustible degree of sources which has several Web end users tearing out their hair because of strolling overall performance and prolonged loading time for articles. On the other hand, in lots of scenarios, the actual culprit isn't the written content or the web site by itself, but fairly The mixture of the ill-Outfitted relationship pace and an internet prepare that does not adequately handle precise consumer demands.
Ahead of roaming free from the Internet, just about every Net person need to to start with select a connection strategy and relationship velocity that should be able to accommodate both of those their spending budget and their person requires. The following post seeks to outline a lot of the simple regions that newbie people should really tackle when selecting to hook up with the internet. For some, it might seem to be commonsense, but for those struggling conveniently avoidable problems and prolonged load occasions it could make a entire world of variation.
Link Speeds
Prior to commencing it might first be smart to elucidate The 2 varieties of connection speeds and how they essentially vary. All methods of internet use throughout the globe only use both one or another of these sorts of connections.
Kbps: Would be the prevalent acronym for Kilobits for every 2nd. A Kilobit is a single thousand bits of data a little remaining one of the most fundamental type of binary code which makes up all information accessible both of those on the internet and on your property PC. Essentially, a tad is definitely the building block of all Laptop or computer technologies and interaction. In laymans phrases it is solely The mix of 1s and 0s that kind the language of computer systems.
Mbps: A much bigger device of information, Mbps refers back to the expression Megabits per 2nd. A Megabit is one million bits. This form of knowledge transference is used by each and every Connection to the internet above Dial-Up pace.
Types of Connection
Dial-Up: The most elementary relationship available, a Dial-Up relationship utilizes the prevailing cell phone line in a company or house to transfer facts at all over 56Kbps. Here is the slowest relationship currently available in Australia which is in the entire process of steadily becoming outdated resulting from more quickly connections getting far more greatly and quickly accessible for a reduced Price.
ISDN: Is anIntegrated Providers Digital Community which is 2 times the pace (at 128Kbps) of Dial-up. It can be challenging to get on account of its reliance on what exactly is rapidly getting to be out-of-date technologies. ISDN was basically the technological stepping stone involving Dial-Up and ADSL.
ADSL: Stands forAsymmetric Electronic Subscriber Line, also most commonly referred to once the expression broadband is used, and is also a one particular-way relationship the place the down load speed is much faster compared to the add speed. It is a frequent lure for the typical purchaser because the speed on the connection is often referenced concerning the most download speed (i.e how briskly a website page loads up / time it requires to save a file), as an alternative to the Substantially slower add velocity (i.e just how long it will require to send an electronic mail / deliver a file to a different Computer system)
Cable: The speediest connection obtainable for each business and residential use (Fibre Optic connections, which can be another degree up, are at this time distinctive to small business because of the substantial cost of putting in and keeping). Cable Net employs a similar procedure of connections to most shell out television providers. It is completely individual to your household mobile phone line and relationship speed is significantly a lot quicker for the two uploads and downloads. Nonetheless, velocity is often compromised by the volume of separate homes located in near proximity that use the same cable as only one cable is generally delivered for an entire neighborhood. Usually cable operates at all around 1.five 6 Megabits of bandwidth which happens to be significantly faster than ADSL.
Relationship Options and Common Traps
To keep up a steady and constantly rapidly link you'll want to acquire treatment in the selection of the plan. Acquiring chosen the telecommunications enterprise with which you would like to subscribe to the support you then have to have to choose a program based on the associated fee of putting in and retaining your connection, the sort of connection you want to own set up, the velocity with the connection, the down load limit, if any, and the consequences if that download Restrict is exceeded.
The down load limit or shaping of your system dictates the amount information and facts it is possible to entry from the online world in just a thirty day period just before getting subjected to either additional fees (which may be major) or slower connections (normally Dial-up).
In line with Miles Humphrys, IT Manager for Corporate Government Offices, among the most important Global chains of serviced workplaces all over the Asia Pacific Location, a typical pitfall when selecting with your World-wide-web approach is, not being aware of what it is that you, or your company, need to utilize the connection for. In accordance with Mr Humphrys, Prior to connecting the organization or user should to start with choose what their Key ways of usage might be. Will they be sending a substantial level of emails? Downloading Reside films or new music? Or simply browsing for information? Each one of these things must be weighed up before signing as many as a confined link or 1 using a capped amount of usage. Almost nothing is much more aggravating for a company, or house Office environment, than being crippled by an extremely gradual connection given that they have gone above their down load limit during the day-to-working day demands on the company http://cennikremontow.pl or person.
If you are Not sure of the level of info which you are more likely to obtain in a month ensure you choose a strategy that provides you sufficient down load potential to help you to then keep track of your usage with out panic of exceeding your limit. Make sure that your approach is adaptable more than enough to then adjust In case your download necessities are possibly significantly fewer or in excess of you expected.
The just one piece of recommendation that I might give for any person looking to connect to the online world possibly now or Later on, higher than all, would be to – go through the good print! The matters to look out for are capped plans, obtain limitations, shaping and especially added prices. If the thing is just about anything that looks somewhat odd, constantly inquire questions or check with an IT Qualified, concluded Mr Humphrys.

Introduction to Personal Branding & Portfolios
Basic principles of personal branding
https://99designs.co.uk/blog/tips/personal-branding/
Personal branding is hugely important, as it is the worlds view of yourself. It is what employers will see before they meet you, so it needs to represent you in the best way possible.
For example, if a company were looking to hire a graphic designer, they would be attracted by impressive branding. If someone were to advertise themselves as a graphic designer yet brand themselves poorly, it doesn't look very trustworthy to potential employers. When done correctly, it can be the difference between job rejections and job acceptance.
To ensure I know how to create a successful personal brand, I wanted to research into how this was possible.
As this illustration below by OrangeCrush demonstrates, personal branding is our own personal superpower.
Tumblr media
Good examples of personal branding
Gary Vaynerchuk
Gary Vaynerchuk is a businessman who also seems to be a motivational speaker. His logo is his name in capital letters, which represents his style. The colour scheme is black and white, which shows that what he is saying is to put it simply: black and white - yes or no; it is loud and clear what he is saying.
Tumblr media
Marie Forleo
Marie Forleo is (in her own words): ‘an entrepreneur, writer, philanthropist and an unshakable optimist dedicated to helping you become the person you most want to be.’
Her branding certainly represents this in a positive way. Her typography and logo is perfectly designed; it makes you feel welcome to be on her website, and you feel encouraged, which is what she is aiming to do. The smiley image of her generates a feeling of positivity for the user on the website.
Tumblr media
1. Understand why you’re building a personal brand
Tumblr media
There needs to be a reason why you’re building your personal brand. It is important to understand what you are offering to the world, and a strong personal brand will help you get noticed. The purpose of your brand needs to be told through the colours, typography and logo as best as possible.
2. Take control of your P.I.E
Tumblr media
P.I.E stands for Performance, Image and Exposure. Performance means you have to deliver the results you are promising with your brand to gain a good image. Exposure means that you need to ensure people know about you.
3. Find your brand story and create your brand framework
What do you want people to know you for and how will you stand out from the competition? It is critical to understand this. It is also important to come up with values that you stand for, such as creativity or innovation etc.
My core values I would say are:
- Creativity
- Empathy
- Innovation
- Honesty
- Influence
Below is an example of a personal brand framework taken from the article:
Tumblr media
4. Assess your personal brand as it stands today
Tumblr media
I and many others on the course won’t be at this stage at the moment, but in the near future it will be really important to see what story our brand is telling today. For example, if I were to Google myself, what comes up? If nothing comes up, how will I ever be found? This is important to recognise in the digital world we live in today. What story are you telling on social media? It is critical to get a social media profile set up and gain a reputation on there to grow your brand. As well as this, it always helps to be kind and pleasant in the real world, as you are representing your brand. For example, if you were to drive on the motorway like a lunatic with a logo on your van, it wouldn’t be a good look!
5. Share your brand story with the world
Select social media channels that you would like to use to promote your brand. For example, LinkedIn and Instagram are hugely popular at the moment, as well as Twitter and Facebook. For example, ensure you have a professional photo as your profile picture, use visuals that show off your brand etc. It is also helpful to be aware of what you post on your social media channels, as potential employers could access it at anytime. Remember the driving like a lunatic example! You are in the public eye now as you try to build your brand.
Tumblr media
6. Build your personal brand’s online presence
Once you have set up your profiles, it is important to create relevant content that engages your followers, such as live talks or inspirational messages, as well as work you have done etc. There needs to be a story told, otherwise no one will notice you. This will help with networking, as someone may stumble upon one of your posts and react positively to it.
7. Pursue a personal branding strategy
Whatever online platforms you use and whatever content you create, there needs to be an intention behind it all. Each post that comes from your profile is like another brick being laid towards the building of your brand.
Basic principles of logo design
https://www.designhill.com/design-blog/basic-principles-logo-design/
1. Make it Simple
Tumblr media
In my opinion this is the single most important thing with logo design. The best logos are always the most simple ones. For example, Apples logo is a simple shape of a bitten apple. Logos are used in many different ways and sizes, so making it intricate with lots of details will get lost. A simple design goes straight to the point; you want people to notice what your brand is, and not have to guess.
2. Use Colours Strategically
It is critical for your logo to look attractive. The use of colours help to convey emotion, for example the colour red will make someone feel energetic, or passionate.
3. Make it Scalable and Versatile
As mentioned previously, you need to make sure your logo can be used in a variety of sizes and mediums. A good way of doing this is to make multiple sizes of your logo. Can the features still be noticed as a small size? If so, then it is designed correctly.
4. It should look Good in Black and White
Don’t rely on the colour to make it stand out, as it may be used for example if you were to do a brand collaboration, so having a red logo on a pink background for example if you were to collaborate with a breast cancer charity, you would need either a white or a black logo to stand out on that particular pink background.
5. Make it Memorable
Tumblr media
It is critical for your logo to be memorable, because you want to be remembered by potential clients and employers. For example, the Nike logo is rememberable as it is unique; it is simply the shape of a tick that no one has ever used or thought of. Make it stand out!
6. The Design should be Timeless
Ensure that your design is used for a long time, instead of creating new logo after new logo, as clients or potential employers will be confused as they associate your brand with your original logo. Ensure that if you do make changes, that it fits with your original brand and isn’t too much of a change. It is also important to ensure that your first logo fits with modern trends, and it isn’t outdated - this will ensure it is as timeless as it can be.
Examples of logo design
1. Good
https://designwoop.com/bad-logos-big-brands-with-the-worst-logos
The amazon logo includes smart graphic elements, such as the a-to-z arrow.
Tumblr media
People are now so familiar with the amazon logo due to its success as a company, it can afford to use the arrow alone, for example on TV adverts.
Tumblr media
2. Bad
https://designwoop.com/bad-logos-big-brands-with-the-worst-logos
This logo is so hard to read that I can’t find out the name of it. It looks very fancy and is almost tattoo-like, however as a logo it just doesn’t work. It is far too complicated; potential employers or clients would take too long to read it. This logo is also not very versatile, so it would be even harder to read than it already is if it were a smaller size.
Tumblr media
3. Good
https://designwoop.com/bad-logos-big-brands-with-the-worst-logos
This logo is memorable, simple and clear. The red/orange, green, blue and yellow colours are colourful enough yet not too overwhelming. The window represents the operating system called ‘Windows’ that Microsoft computers use. The logo is also versatile, as it can be used on all social media platforms.
Tumblr media
It also doesn’t look too dissimilar to the old logo, which is critical to keep a timeless design.
Tumblr media
4. Bad
https://designwoop.com/bad-logos-big-brands-with-the-worst-logos
This logo is not effective because the company is for boilers. What do boilers have to do with rabbits? The graphics used in your logo need to relate to what your brand is, for example a tree surgeon would usually have a tree graphic on their logo.
Tumblr media
5. Good
https://blog.hubspot.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/33356/brand-logos-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly.aspx
This new logo from Animal Planet is fun and fresh. Its sleek design shows an elephant, relating back to one of its previous designs.
The writing is simple and easy to read, and the design is versatile.
Tumblr media
Here are the previous designs of the logo. As you can see, the logo has got smaller and smaller with less content each time to ensure that it is versatile with modern technology.
Tumblr media
One last tip that I found, is to make sure that you use typography that is not recognisable to another brand. For example, this image below demonstrates that you shouldn’t use the Disney font, as it is unique to Disney:
https://designwoop.com/bad-logos-big-brands-with-the-worst-logos
Tumblr media
Basic principles of portfolio design
Tumblr media
https://dribbble.com/stories/2019/10/21/5-design-principles-for-building-your-first-portfolio
1. What is the purpose of your portfolio?
There needs to be a core purpose of your portfolio before you begin designing it. What job are you aiming for? How do you want to express yourself visually and what aspects of your story do you want to include to attract the visitors to your site. For example, I want to include a short sentence on who I am as a person. I want it to be short because I am aware of the time pressures employers will have, as I am looking for someone to hire me.
2. Make it simple and accessible
Make sure that people can skim over it. As I mentioned before, the visitors on your site may not have a lot of time to view your site. It should be easy to navigate, for example with a down icon to show where the work is. Something that simple is essential to ensuring a positive experience on a site. It should include:
- Home page
- About me
- Your work
- Contact
3. Focus on the projects you love the most
It is important to be confident in the work you currently have. As a student I am aware I am at the bottom of the ladder in terms of my UX experience. I need to show people what work I have done, and go from there. Showing the work you think the most of will not only make you look as good a designer as possible, but it will give you the opportunity to talk about the work more due to you being more invested in it.
4. Write about your work in detail
Write a description with your work, and include things such as:
- Problem
- Goal
- Hypothesis
- Your process
- The solution
- Your conclusion
- Your learnings
You need to give the employer or client some context into your work, so they can have an idea on how you could work on projects for them.
5. Collate your work as you go along
It is important to store all of your work and have a copy of it. I personally use iCloud and have an external hard drive to back up my work, just in case anything went wrong. This is what you have done so it is important to store it as evidence, otherwise you have nothing to show for your hard work and dedication over the years. It also makes it easier to put your work on your portfolio.
Examples of personal branding and portfolios
I want to investigate personal portfolios and logos that interest me, as well as ones that don’t, so I can critique and report on how they work and how they don’t work.
To begin, I created a moodboard on my Behance page.
Tumblr media
https://www.behance.net/collection/179872561/Portfolios
1. Aaron Weeks
One of the first examples that caught my eye is the portfolio of Aaron Weeks. He is a Junior Industrial Designer.
First of all, I like the ‘aw.’ logo however I don’t see the need to put his name and title next to it too. It looks crammed. I would just have the ‘aw.’ logo and then his job title as another sentence lower down.
Tumblr media
Aaron’s portfolio is unique; it is in the style of a shopping catalogue. His product designs are clearly differentiated with the use of different colours.
Tumblr media
Including user related goals in the projects helps me delve underneath just the end result and really gain an understanding of who he is designing for. Simple icons help me quickly understand it (if they were in a list then I would not bother reading it).
Tumblr media
Showing the sketches from the concept development is unique as most portfolios have the final designs and explain the development through a sentence or two. To see these sketches gives another interesting insight into the project.
Tumblr media
Again, to see the prototyping stage was another good insight. This helps the person viewing the portfolio truly understand how the designer works. Each designer has their own personality, and you can see that Aaron has a real passion for his work.
Tumblr media
This section focuses on parts of the product he has designed, explaining it in detail. This demonstrates to me an eye-for-detail and I like designers with an eye for detail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Julieta Sorgen
Julieta’s portfolio stood out to me as her use of colour was simply perfect. A lot of the time too much colours can make a portfolio the branding get lost, however the typography and pastel colours work brilliantly together here.
Tumblr media
As you can see above, I was impressed with the questions she was asking herself. She asked questions from who she is as a designer right down to the colours and typography. Yes these are obvious questions to ask, however she seems to be more aware than others of the importance of personal branding.
Tumblr media
The colours splashed on a white background work brilliantly. There is a clear consistent brand that tells me what kind of designer she is. This is exactly what I want to do with my branding: I want people to know who I am and what I do when they see it.
As you can see, she has included her CV in her portfolio and again the consistency is there. The space allocated for her logo, branding assets and the text is perfect here; it isn’t crammed onto the page.
Tumblr media
This simplistic GIF below shows that she isn’t afraid to express herself graphically, it is fun and in your face in a good way. The words that describe her as a designer are a nice addition and the colours/icons used help to ram it down my throat to me as the viewer.
Tumblr media
The list of what work she does is nice and simple, which is all it needs to be. I would have liked to see some work though, that is my only criticism. However, I wanted to include this one because the personal branding is just exceptional.
Tumblr media
Here is her branding on a bag, which shows that she is aware that you need branding for a lot of different mediums.
Tumblr media
This CV and business card together matches. It sounds simple but if I were to visualise the perfect branding, I would be able to match them together. I suppose if we think of branding as a jigsaw, all of the different mediums have to fit together. Otherwise, it can get lost for example if it is too busy with not a lot of negative space.
Tumblr media
The simple messaging is easy to read and my attention wasn’t lost throughout scrolling through the personal branding.
Tumblr media
3. Luca Porracchia
https://www.behance.net/gallery/89238819/lucaporracchiacom-Personal-website
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luca has a fantastic portfolio. The ‘hello’ word on the home page can be manipulated with your mouse, so it ensures that the experience that you have on the site is memorable. The black and white colour scheme is simple and straight to the point, with the emphasis being placed on the fun experience with the ‘hello’ word, and the work itself.
The links are in all four corners as well as the top, which helps to make the website unique, as usually there is a navigation bar at the top of the screen. This is helped by the fact that there is a lot of negative space, as without it the links would be hard to notice.
The ‘about’ page is fantastic, as the experience is similar to a conversation. Luca tells us that his nickname is ‘Porro’, and already the experience feels more personable and less formal, which is a positive thing as it makes the visitor of the site more comfortable and welcome. The fact that he does branding and motion design relates to the ‘hello’ experience on the home page, as well as the jumping arrow on the bottom right of the screen where it says ‘Scroll for more’.
Tumblr media
When you place the mouse on his name, a picture appears, which is clever and adds another unique aspect to the site.
Tumblr media
The fact that a timeline has been included not only shows that he is a hard worker, but that he is as experienced as he can be in his field. It is another unique way of displaying what he has been doing in his design career. Many people take gap years, so this shows that he is a determined person.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His work pages are brilliant, as they place the focus on each piece of work at a time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When clicked, the work takes you to the Behance link, which demonstrates the passion Porro has in the subject, as most designers use and are aware of Behance. It is also an aesthetically pleasing way of demonstrating the work. It also doesn’t limit the work to just his portfolio; it is on Behance too which gives him more chance of getting recognised by employers and clients.
Tumblr media
His website is also responsive so it works on many devices, such as a smartphone. This is critical as you need to prepare your site for all users, especially in todays modern era with technology such as smartphones.
4. Aira Borja
https://www.behance.net/gallery/56735451/Self-Branding-Portfolio
Aira Borja has a fun and unique brand. She is clearly a talented graphic designer, and the use of a detailed-yet-simple illustration relates to her field of work perfectly. The colours are soft, friendly and welcoming which attracts you to the brand. The branding is consistent throughout her CV, business card, cover letter and portfolio. The fact that she has used a book for her portfolio shows that she is trying to stand out from the crowd; it makes her brand memorable and again she is aware that layout is important in graphic design.

Private Security-Chapter 10
We know what Nea and Matthias have been up to, but this chapter gives us a look at Ben and Nea’s dad. Dad’s POV. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
As I floated in and out of consciousness, I could hear and feel things happening all around me.
At first, there was pain-sharp and intense. It seemed to start from my leg and radiate outwards. I could feel hands on me, but I was too sluggish and disoriented to figure out who it was or what they were doing. I kept wanting to ask for Nea, but my tongue seemed weighed down in my mouth. It reminded me of the feeling you experience when waking up from surgery. I couldn’t make my muscles form the words that my brain was desperately trying to utter. Time seemed distorted.
But now I was waking up.
I could tell that I was in a car going very fast; and as the world around me came into focus, I could hear someone singing. Through the haze, I could make out a baritone voice, seemingly oblivious to my discomfort in the backseat of whatever vehicle we were in. If I wasn’t currently fearing for my life, I would have found the song choice highly amusing…
Impossible, for a plain yellow pumpkin to become a golden carriage! Impossible, for a plain country bumpkin and a prince to join in marriage. And four white mice will never be four white horses! Such fal-der-ol and fid-dle-dee dee of course, is— Impossible! But the world is full of zanies and fools, Who don’t believe in sensible rules, And won’t believe what sensible people say. And because these daft and dewey-eyed dopes keep building up impossible hopes, Impossible things are happening every daaaaay!
“Help me,” I uttered weakly. “Help me, please…”
I could feel the car slowing down and pulling over before coming to a stop. The driver, who I still couldn’t see, swiftly exited the front seat and opened the rear door. I wasn’t sure how I could possibly defend myself if I needed to, but I mentally started going over scenarios anyway.
The door opened, and a muscled, tattooed arm reached its way inside, followed by a beard and a big grin.
Tumblr media
“Well, hey there. It’s about fucking time you woke up, bitch.”
I blinked twice, attempting to clear the fog. I knew that arm…and that beard.
“B-Ben…?”
“Fuckin-A right, sir. How are you feeling?”
“My ears hurt.”
Immediately I felt large hands at either side of my face, turning my head from side to side in examination.
“Sir, everything looks ok. Can you describe the pain for me?”
Sluggishly, I replied, “Singing. Your singing was hurting my ears.”
A lazy smile crept across his features.
“Ah. So you’ve got jokes now? Well, I’ll have you know that the composer/lyricist duo of Rogers and Hammerstein was one of the most influential and successful pairings in American musical theater history. So, you can just eat my ass. Sir.”
I chuckled and attempted to shift my weight, which only resulted in a wince as sharp pain shot up my leg.
A focused expression replaced Ben’s trademark smirk; and he seemed to, in a split second, shift into a different gear.
“Sir, no more fucking around. Can you rate the pain for me? We’ve got about 20 more minutes to go, and I need you to hang in there until we get to the safehouse. I’ve got supplies there. I did some triage on scene and got you stable, but if you can’t make it the rest of the way, you need to let me know now. From my quick examination, I don’t think there are any implanted fragments, but you’ve gotta tell me if you have intense amounts of pain anywhere other than the entry or exit sites.”
In my head, I wondered how he knew to help. From the words he had used…”fragments…entry site…exit”…I knew I had been shot. But his confidence in what he was doing put me at ease. Reaching down, I felt a belt cinched very tightly just below my groin and a large gauze bandage wrapped around my leg.
“I’m…I’m ok. Just uncomfortable. Can you help with that?”
Ben nodded and reached down where a blanket was folded on the floor of the backseat. He balled it up and gingerly placed it under my calf to keep my leg elevated.
“That’s the best I can do for now, sir. I don’t want to give you anything stronger than a local for the pain until I’m sure you’re not in shock. Do you think that this can get you through the last part of the drive? Like I said, it’s about 20 minutes.”
“Yes. Yes, I think I can.”
Ben began to retreat, but I grabbed his hand as he was pulling away.
“Nea! How’s Nea? Is she ok? Where is she?”
Ben nodded, understanding my panic.
“Sir, she’s with Matthias. She’s ok. Physically unharmed. A bit shaken up, but otherwise ok. They’re on their way to the other safehouse.”
Immediately, tears sprung to my eyes and I leaned my head back against the door. The armrest dug into the back of my neck, but I didn’t care. My baby was alright and she was with the man who had become my trusted protector. Just like he had kept me safe…I knew he’d do the same for my girl.
“Ben, I need you to do something for me. Are you in communication with Matthias?”
“Yes sir, I am. But only in code.”
“That’s fine. What I need you to send is just two words. If you want to translate them into the code that you and Matthias use, that’s fine. But it’ll be easier for everyone if you can just send what I tell you. Do you think you can do that?”
“Depends, sir. I can’t compromise our location or theirs. But if your two words don’t do that, I’m game.”
“It won’t compromise a thing. I would never do that to my daughter.”
As I spoke, Ben already had his phone out and was ready.
“What I need you to send is: ‘Oklahoma. Kansas.’”
“Oklahoma Kansas. You got it, sir. I could have just sent the word, ‘Ok’…but I’m assuming that it means more to send it this way.”
My mouth fell open.
“You understand the code? How?”
“Because I’m not 12 years-old, sir. ‘Oklahoma Kansas’…’O’ ‘K’. It’s not rocket science. This is the reason that I came up with the code that Matthias and I use. He’ll tell people that we came up with it together, but that’s horseshit. I’m the brains of this operation. He just sits there and looks pretty.”
Almost instantaneously, Ben’s phone dinged with a response.
Ben turned the phone to me. The message said, “She says ‘Thank you’”.
Swallowing, I nodded at Ben and reached out to gently pat his arm.
“Ok, son. We can go now. I’ll be alright.”
Ben shut the car door and returned to his spot at the wheel. He started the car in silence, allowing me a few moments to calm myself and process everything that had just come to light.
After about 10 minutes, he turned over his shoulder and asked with a smile, “Want me to sing again?”
**********
The safe house was located in an old plaza. There was a mix of old office buildings and smaller single storefronts. Ben pulled into a space in front one of these smaller brick structures and parked the car. From the street, it looked like just a strip mall with some offices for rent. Little did I know, it was so much more.
Tumblr media
Ben managed to get me out of the car fairly easily. Quite the feat considering my injury, but he’d probably had to move injured people before in his line of security work. We walked (or hobbled, in my case) slowly up to a non-descript entrance with a “For Lease” sign in the window. While it didn’t look like much, I quickly realized that the door was biometrically programmed to open using a fingerprint as Ben reached his hand up above the doorjamb and pressed his thumb to a small, hidden panel. I assumed it would only allow Ben or Matthias to enter.
Inside the main entrance was the oldest, most outdated, boring, generic office I’d ever seen.
Tumblr media
“What kind of business is this? How could anyone do any work in here?”
Ben chuckled. “You’d be hard-pressed to get any-fucking-thing done in this room, sir. These computers turn on, but that’s about it. This is just a front. If anyone were to look through the window, they’d see absolutely nothing going on. And if they were to get really stupid and call the number on the “For Lease” sign, they’d be calling my cell phone. And let me tell ya, no one who’s ever spoken to me has wanted to go ahead and rent this shithole at the end of the conversation. The real magic of this place is in the back.”
We walked through a door and into a completely different world. The room in the back had a bank of surveillance monitors, leather chairs, a flat screen television with an impressive sound system, and an old couch. This couch is where I was deposited as Ben walked around checking locks and flipping switches to bring the room to life. Rummaging through a closet, he came back with a very large duffel bag chock full of medical supplies.
The jovial Ben that I’d come to now had been replaced by a man on a mission. Without preamble, he took a pair of scissors and sliced up the entire length of my suit pants to expose my leg. In surprise, I attempted to pull back, only to be held still by a pair of very strong hands. As he unwrapped the gauze from my thigh and loosened the makeshift tourniquet, my wound started to bleed in earnest.
Immediately getting anxious, I began to squirm under his examination.
“Sir, you are awesome and I love working for you. But if you don’t calm your ass down and sit fucking still, I’m going to let you bleed out just for some peace and quiet.”
“That’s some ‘bedside manner’ you’ve got there, son,” I said, wincing as he probed my thigh with his gloved hands. He grabbed a bandage from the bag and pressed it firmly to what looked to be the worst part of the wound.
“With all due respect…and I do mean that… Right now, I don’t give a shit what you think about my ‘manner’. I’m trying to save your fucking life. I promise I’m a nice guy. And once I know you’re out of the woods, we can sit around and talk about our feelings and shit all night. I’ll even give you a cuddle. But until then, let me do my goddamn job. Sir.”
“How do you even know what your ‘goddamn job’ is, if you don’t mind me asking?”
Momentarily tensing his heavily tattooed forearms, he confidently said, “Sir, I’m the best fucking combat medic you’ve ever met. I could probably be a world-renowned trauma surgeon by now if that life had held any interest for me; but I chose to travel the world with my best friend instead. You’ve gotta relax and trust me, ok? Gunshot wounds are no fucking joke; but from what I can see, this pressure bandage is doing really nice work of getting the bleeding to stop and the area isn’t rapidly swelling, so I’d say that you are one lucky son of a bitch. That bullet didn’t break any bones or nick any arteries. When we get the fuck out of here, you’re gonna want to play the lottery.”
Tumblr media
He really was something else.
“So I’m out of danger?”
“Eh, not quite yet. We’ve got to get the bleeding to stop completely and watch that bastard for infection for the next 48 hours. But I’m amazing at what I do, so yeah…you’re gonna be fine.”
I did my best to relax and just allow him to work for a few minutes. It was disconcerting to see how many bloody pieces of gauze he was going through, but each new one took longer and longer to become saturated. When it finally looked like the bleeding was stopping, Ben began to search in the medical kit. I could hear mumbles of ‘bitch’, ‘needle’, ‘fucker’, and ‘syringe’…and knew that stitches were likely coming. Not overly thrilled with that prospect, I attempted to momentarily distract myself by asking Ben something I’d had on my mind.
“So, Ben, I’ve got a question for you.”
“Shoot. Pun intended, by the way,” he answered with a grin, as he continued to search for the needed supplies.
“Is Matthias in love with my daughter?”
Without a moment of hesitation, Ben looked me right in the eye and said, Oh yeah. 100%.”
Shocked by how quickly he answered, I responded with, “Has he said that?”
“No, sir. I’m actually not even sure if he knows it yet. That motherfucker can be pretty stupid. But he’ll figure it out eventually. He’s never been in love before, so I think his head is pretty far up his ass on this one. But what I can tell you is this: no one in this fucking world will take better care of her or love her more, even if it were to cost him everything he is.”
Surprisingly, I wasn’t upset about anything he said. If I were to choose a man for my daughter, I couldn’t imagine a better fit. At some point, I’d be having a long heart-to heart with my head of security, but since that wasn’t an option right now, I did my best to stay still and allow Ben to finish his work.
Shifting gears, I asked Ben, “So are they in an office like this one?”
“Oh fuck no. This safehouse is one that we’ve only recently set up. They went to one of our oldest. It’s out past the state park, far from the city.”
As I continued to allow Ben to work, my thoughts consumed me.
Ben tied off the last stitch and re-wrapped my leg; and as the events of the last few hours began to catch up with me, I found myself drifting off. But not before thinking about Nea again.
My little girl, alone in the middle of the woods with a very handsome bodyguard who also happened to be madly in love with her…things were about to get interesting.
Tumblr media
Finally succumbing to sleep, I could hear Ben, once again singing as he busied himself in the room.
In my own little corner In my own little chair I can be whatever I want to be On the wing of my fancy I can fly anywhere And the world will open its arms to me…
Cinderella. Again. I’d have to remember to get him tickets once all this was over.

Frequently asked questions Every Home Seller Should Read Before Hiring a Real Estate Agent
Tumblr media
Before you hire a real estate agent, read the answers to your most important things. Will a property I sell myself be at a cut-throat disadvantage compared to properties sold by real estate agents? No-and in several ways, you'll have an advantage. First of all, today's buyers find their properties on the Internet on their own time. If they like your home, they're going to call you no matter what-and the odds are good that they'll possibly be happier dealing with you than with an agent. It is basically no secret that a huge number of homes are not selling as well as expire before the agent ever gets the home sold. Instigate a Google search and you'll see the amount of training material the estate industry offers to teach their agents how to influence sellers to renew their listings for a year. There isn't an magic in what a real estate agent does. To give you an example of the key benefits of selling your home yourself, think about signs. When you list using an agent, they get to place a mini billboard into your yard that includes a tiny bit of advertising for your home and a large number of advertising for their company. The whole industry should have moved to customized signs a long time ago-but they haven't. You will find a significant advantage by tailoring your on-the-ground marketing propose to your home, including your FOR SALE sign. Do homes sell just for more when listed with a real estate agent? That's what any National Association of Realtors funded by real estate agents states, but there's no independent data to support their statistics. In case a real estate agent tells you they can get you more money for your home, keep these things bring you a buyer; if they can't, they need to leave you will alone to sell your house. Far too many listings handled by providers expire, unsold. An agent's opinion is not going to get your place sold. It's easy for people to make guesses and conjectures, but to win in today's market, you have to deal with hard information. How much time and effort is this really going to take? You will need about as much time to sell your house as it takes to make sure you plan a long vacation. The marketing side requires one of the most time up front, but once you've gathered your facts, the software shouldn't take you more than a few hours to get your online marketing plan started. You'd have to gather that same advice for an agent, if you used one. And the process has long been streamlined for you on sites like simpleandsold. com. For anybody who is skeptical, take the amount you'd pay in commission towards a real estate agent and divide it by the number of hours you will need to plan a vacation. The result should help you see that occasion you put into selling your house will be time well expended. A real estate agent told me it would be dangerous to sell my own home, because I'd be letting strangers in my house all the time. Should I be worried? Unfortunately, you're going to have to let strangers in your home to offer it. But you would have to do this with or without a real estate professional, so this is almost a moot point. Remember that you can clear your home any way you want: you can take down information for safeness purposes; you can schedule your viewing appointments so that you will never be alone in the house; and you have the right to stop the process if you become uncomfortable with a person's presence. This is something sometimes real estate agents face. Do I need to use a Multiple Listing Service (MLS) to see the exposure I need for my home? First, you should understand what MLS is. It was not designed as a marketing place for homes; rather, it's a simple way for brokers for you to negotiate compensation with each other, so that Real Estate Agent A can convey to Real Estate Agent B, "Sell my listing and I will spend you X. " Period. My local MLS, that has been named #1 in the country, is still way behind the times. The software allows me to upload approximately eight tiny (two-by-two-inch) pictures and about three sentences of description. I'm not really allowed to link to anything. How is that a viable selling tool? Look at Zillow, Trulia, and Yahoo! Real Estate will probably see how much the MLS has been eclipsed. It's turned into just an outdated method for real estate agents to protect their lawn. Some systems are not even Mac compatible. With Straight forward and Sold, you can put your home up for enjoying on hundreds of websites, and you can add up to thirty-six large, high-definition photos in your listing. You can have paragraphs of description with regards to your home. You can attach listing brochures and other files, which will interested buyers can view online or download. You can add background music or a voice-over about your property's features; you possibly can provide links to area schools and anything else you'd like. What is the NAR? NAR stands for the National Connections of Realtors, the lobbying group listed at #4 on opensecrets. org's list of political heavy hitters. Oahu is the organization about which Joe Nocera of the New York Conditions once wrote: "You have to wonder sometimes what there're smoking over there at the National Association of Real estate agents. " According to Bloodhound Realty Blog, The NAR seems to have stayed under the radar while doing a monstrous amount of difficulties for the economy, the housing market, and most importantly, the consumer. Bloodhound Realty Blog states (this blog does a great project of exposing the NAR), "It was the NAR that lobbied for each law and rule change who resulted in the housing boom, the sub-prime lending failure, the wanton bundling of fraudulent loans, the recurring subsidization of the secondary mortgage market, etc . The bad guy behind all the villains in the collapse of the American market is the National Association of Realtors. " "The properties licensing laws, written in their original form by the NAR, exist to limit competition in real estate brokerage, eradicating alternative sources of real estate brokerage to artificially sustain more significant commissions for NAR brokers" John Crudele of the Los angeles Post recently stated: "The real estate industry lives through motto: "location, location, location. " Next week it'll be recognized for "deception, deception, deception. " People want comprehend and the NAR is deceiving the public all to save the particular sacred real estate commission. Crudele also reports: "The Countrywide Association of Realtors admitted that it has been reporting damaging figures on sales... Jeez! Tell the truth!... The Agents aren't doing the country any favors by sugar-coating his or her stats... and the people at NAR don't seem to be bothered by your practice. " Don't most people trust real estate agents to get individuals the best deal? Unfortunately, people don't trust them. From the most recent Gallup poll, they ranked lower than bankers and yet higher than congressmen in terms of ethics. In all fairness, it's not typically the behavior of real estate agents that has been unethical; it's the way the organization, the NAR, has worked to block their contest. As I see it, and as most Americans see it, competition is ideal for the competent. You own your home, so you should have the choice selling it any way you choose. The NAR got a general population slap on the wrist in 2008 from the Justice Agency when the organization tried to stop real estate agents without a physical clinic from participating in MLS. The Justice Department had to sue the NAR to allow mobile, internet-based brokers-the kind what person operate from laptops and Starbucks instead of fancy offices-to practice their trade. I think the NAR should be embarrassed of making taxpayers pay for this lawsuit, which (in the text of the DOJ itself) "requires NAR to allow Internet-based readily available real estate brokers to compete with traditional brokers. " The Team said the settlement would enhance competition in the realty brokerage industry, giving consumers more choice, better services, and lower commission rates. NAR is now bound because of a ten-year settlement to ensure that it continues to abide by the requirements of your agreement. But don't Realtors operate under a Prefix of Ethics? Ironically, the NAR emphasizes a "Code of Ethics" for all its members-but at the same time, they have been labeled on the carpet for deceptive statistics on homes revenues. In my opinion, anyone who needs an organization to tell them easy methods to be ethical probably doesn't understand the code regarding ethics that they're swearing to uphold.
