Actually I'm not done.
Agamemnon wad a genuinely shitty, immoral bastard even by ancient terms because he lured Clytembestra and Iphegenia to the island the Greeks were trapped on (also by agamemnons own folly) BY SAYING ACHILLES HAD ASKED FOR IPHEGENIA'S HAND IN MARRIAGE. IPHEGENIA CAME FOR A WEDDING. SHE WAS SO YOUNG. Like. To a Greek lady of high birth this was the end game and plus Achilles was Greece's most eligible bachelor too (even tho he was like 15. Iphegenia also was pretty young too.) So she was naturally overjoyed. Her mother even more so.
AND AGAMEMNON DIDNT TELL ACHILLES EITHER. HE JUST USED THE BOY'S NAME. WHEN ACHILLES SAW THE GREEKS SPRING ON IPHEGENIA TO RIP HER FROM CLYTEMNESTRA HE LEGIT FOUGHT THEM.OFF.
AND THEN AGAMEMNON HAD THE GALL. TO BE MAD ABOUT IT? LIKE. ACHILLES SHOULD HAVE JUST KILLED THE FUCKER THERE AND THEN I SWEAR TO GOD BECAUSE EVERYTHING AGAMEMNON DOES FROM THERE OUT SCREWS EVERYONE OVER REGULARLY. I'M SURPRISED NO ONE STABBED HIM EARLIER INTO THE WAR. I WOULD HAVE. I'D HAVE FUCKING POISONED HIM ON THE SHIP NGL.
Further: Iphegenia loved her father and was loyal to him. So even after he lied to her, was set on killing her to get this war rolling, and set his own men to capture her, she still went to the temple of Artemis and allowed herself to be sacrificed to soothe Artemis' wrath. She did what she considered her highest duty and honor.
I have no idea why the Greeks thought Agamemnon fit to run the army. My professors always implied it was because he was the wealthiest of the Greek kings.
What makes me even angrier is that everyone in the Odyssey demonises Clytemnestra over it. Every single person on ithaca's council is like "oh Penelope is probably cheating on odysseus and ready to murder him anyway. Just like Clytemnestra did to poor Agamemnon." AS IF PENELOPE WASN'T THE MOST PATIENT AND FAITHFUL WIFE.
THEY TELL TELEMACHUS THIS DAILY. THAT THEY FULLY EXPECT TRECHERY FROM PENELOPE. LIKE CAN YOU IMAGINE YOUR FATHER'S MOST TRUSTED FRIENDS AND COUNCIL DAILY WARNING YOU THAT YOUR MOTHER, WHO HAS BEEN BOMBARDED BY SUITORS DAILY FOR YEARS, WHO HAS REJECTED ALL OF THEM AND DONE HER BEST AS REGENT TO PROTECT HER LANDS, WHO HAS BEEN THE ONLY PARENT IN YOUR LIFE AND HAS DONE ALL.OF THIS WITH ONLY THEE SUPPORT OF HER HANDMAIDENS-- THAT THEY EXPECT HER TO BE FAITHLESS? THAT THEY EXPECT HER TO BE WEAK?
The only reason Penelope got caught with her weaving plot is because she was betrayed by one of her personal maids. She was just as wily and clever as Odysseus and her every action in the Odyssey shows that. She is given more agency than most women in Greek myth and I forever stan her.
Fucking hell. I'd have run through my halls and killed them for putting my mother's name in their mouth. I'd have been like "well if my mother loves her husband this much, what did agamemnon do that turned Clytemnestra so thoroughly against Agamemnon that she killed him on sight?"
"Oh??? He lied to his wife and daughter and then ripped Iphegenia from her arms and had her brutally sacrificed to repay a goddess for HIS OWN TRANSGRESSIONS? yeah no he had it coming. Keep my mother's name out of your filthy, lying mouths or I'll have your tongues cut from them."
Clytemnestra deserved better. And someone should have given Penelope a gun. She wouldn't have used it because she's the most clever woman in all.of Greece and was an excellent diplomat. But she should have the option.
Moral of the story: Greek myth boys need to defend their mothers better. Clytemnestra was justified in her vengeance and Orestes wad a little bitch about it. She should not have all this bad press-- ti the point that the odyssey pits two bad bitches against each other as foil characters. Send tweet.
99% of all murders committed by women in ancient greek plays are completely justified

[cackling] Robin: Why don’t you guys find something better to do and pick on someone else-.. or better yet, no one at all! … Titus: What’re you gonna do about it, gingy? … Robin: Is that enough, or do I have to knock all your fucking teeth out too? Titus: The fuck-… Levi: Dude, the team-.. it’s not worth it. Harry: He’s right, man. … [raucous laughter] Aster: What’s so fun-.. woah, what happened? Harry: Gingy just fucking popped off, man! Molly: His voice was deeper than I thought it’d be. Titus: I think he broke my nose… … Robin: Sorry, I’m just sick of them treating you like that-.. thinking they’re better than everyone, it’s pathetic. … Robin: I don’t care when it’s me but it pisses me off when they do it to you. It's hard not to find irony in the criticisms directed towards Eloise Bridgerton and the elevation of Penelope Featherington as a more genuine and hardworking figure in contrast with Eloise's supposed privileged circumstances and her discourse on feminism. Indeed, some voices have pointed out Eloise's feminism as something white and privileged, and while this is not without merit, it's akin to rediscovering what others have already noticed, akin to Christopher Columbus "discovering" America.
Understanding the context in which "Bridgerton" unfolds is essential. The series is set in Regency England, between 1813 and 1825. This historical period is marked by a highly stratified and conservative society, where women, especially those of the upper class, were relegated to traditional roles and lacked basic legal rights. In this context, any discussion of feminism must consider the unique limitations and challenges of the time.
It is true that Eloise Bridgerton, being part of a respected family in English nobility, embodies many of the characteristics associated with the white and privileged feminism of the time. However, this should not diminish the value of her role in advancing feminist ideas in her historical context. It is thanks to women like Eloise, who challenged social expectations and dared to question the status quo, that doors were opened for future, more inclusive feminist movements.
On the other hand, when analyzing Penelope Featherington's role in contrast with Eloise Bridgerton's, intriguing nuances worthy of a more detailed critical exploration are revealed. Although both come from upper-class families, Penelope's experiences differ significantly from Eloise's. In the society depicted in "Bridgerton," Penelope is portrayed as a more marginal figure, overshadowed by the prominence and glamour of the Bridgerton family. She is often seen in the background, struggling to find her place in a world where her social status does not put her at the center of attention.
Throughout the series, Penelope exhibits a distressing lack of empathy and solidarity towards other women. Instead of fostering unity and support among her peers, her writings are propelled by feelings of envy, resentment, and desires for revenge. Striking examples of this include her actions to publicly reveal Marina Thompson's pregnancy, intending to undermine her relationship with Colin Bridgerton, or defaming individuals such as Daphne, Edwina, and Kate Sharma, often with no apparent reason other than personal gain.
Penelope's behavior as Lady Whistledown sheds light on her complex nature and motivations. While it may represent an attempt to find her voice in a world dominated by more powerful figures, it also reveals a tendency towards manipulation and selfishness. Ultimately, her role as the mysterious chronicler is more than just a quest for identity; it is a reflection of the moral and ethical complexities underlying the society of "Bridgerton."
In summary, asserting that Penelope is more feminist and hardworking than Eloise due to her role as Lady Whistledown is, at best, simplistic and, at worst, deeply misleading. Both women, while privileged in their own right, have chosen different paths in life and have faced their own challenges. However, the narrative of Penelope as a morally superior and more genuinely hardworking figure should be questioned in light of her actions and motivations, which often reveal a lack of integrity and empathy towards her peers.
It's important to note that when Theo confronts Eloise, questioning her understanding of the real world and her privileged position, Eloise doesn't reject this criticism but uses it as a catalyst to seek greater understanding. Recognizing the validity of Theo's observation, Eloise actively seeks to broaden her horizons. She engages in conversations with Theo and John, seeking to break free from the bubble of privilege in which she has lived so far.
On the other hand, Penelope takes a different stance towards her own privileged position. Instead of acknowledging her situation and seeking to understand the realities of those less privileged, Penelope vehemently denies any suggestion that she also benefits from the system. Rather than accepting her position of privilege, she portrays herself as a victim, despite her actions suggesting otherwise. Ultimately, this divergence in attitudes between Eloise and Penelope highlights the complexity of individual perceptions of privilege and personal responsibility in an unequal world.
PS: The comment: "Penelope saved Eloise by writing that she hung out with radicals, she doesn't know what it's like to be grateful" is shit. Whose fucking fault is it that the Queen is on a crusade with torches and pitchforks, looking for blood and a rolling head? From Penelope because she doesn't know when to keep her hand still and stop writing, if it weren't for Penelope, the queen wouldn't think that Eloise is Lady Whistledown, Penelope wasn't looking to help Eloise, she was looking to save her skin.

A man possessed, Colin takes a step forward. He takes Penelope's chin in his hands and tilts her face up to his. Their lips are mere inches apart. Their breath mingles, the air growing hot and heavy. And then, Pen's eyes close and their lips close the distance. Soft at first, the perfect, innocent first kiss, lips just barely meeting. After a moment, they press more firmly into one another, the two of them giving in to the passion of the moment. As Colin pulls back just a second, Pen's eyelids flutter open. Colin looks at her like he has never really seen her before, in awe of her beauty. But in that moment, the spell is broken for Pen, as she realizes she's pressing her face against the window of a house she can never live in. (x)
