You wake up disoriented, your vision is blurry and there is the scent of alcohol, sweat, and dust. The sun hurts your eye. You stumble on your feet, trying to focus as you spot a figure in the distance. As you step closer, you recognize a visage from a past you tried hard to bury down – it’s your father, and he is about to leave you again as he balances on the ledge of the precipice.

ver·ti·go /ˈvərdəɡō/ noun a sensation of whirling and loss of balance, associated particularly with looking down from a great height, or caused by disease affecting the inner ear or the vestibular nerve; giddiness.

Certain filmmakers have a very distinct voice; the colors they choose, the camera angles, the themes, and the way they build up a story. But few are as recognizable, or controversial, as Alfred Hitchcock. Either by his choices in the story, such as killing the most recognizable actress in the movie that had been advertised as the protagonist; or a rather questionable behavior behind the camera, Hitchcock was a master of testing the limits of the suspense and leaving the audience’s blood run cold.

In Alfred Hitchcock - Vertigo the Spanish company Pendulo Studio certainly invokes the themes and style of the influential movie director. It bears the same name of one of the most famous movies and uses the concepts but in a different way. We follow the writer Ed Miller who is struggling with 10 years of writer’s block until his life takes a wild turn: after a car wreck that left him completely uninjured, at least physically, he starts to ramble about his wife and daughter were in the vehicle and are missing despite the complete lack of any physical evidence of anyone else involved, or even their existence. Moreover, he is rendered unable to walk due to an intense case of vertigo. Ed’s editor calls to his former therapist, doctor Julia Lomas, to assist in uncovering the truth.

The game follows the formula popularized by Telltale’ series such as The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead or Batman – The Telltale series: the player is presented with set pieces they can explore and examine, with certain points triggering the next story point. Some dialogues are time-based and some you can take your time to choose, and all action scenes are peppered with quick time events. There is a new mechanic that is based on hypnosis therapy in which Dr. Lomas listens to Ed’s story and together they revisit every scene, looking for the incongruences, and slowly unraveling his traumatic past and uncovering the truth hidden underneath the lies until leading to a shocking discovery.

Vertigo even chooses to lean toward a more stylistic visual identity, like its video-game influence, combining it with its film inspiration making for a strong choice: the expressive models accentuate the emotions, the colors dictate the mood of the scene, and even the way the prompts are written offer clues to reflect the character’s thoughts. It also employs the dolly zoom, also called the Vertigo shot, to create some highly uncomfortable visual scenes that along with the story that was written to make the player uneasy its results are enthralling. The main leitmotif is also present in some of these tense scenes, punctuating the tension along with the splendid job of the voice cast.

The game, however, uses highly controversial and uncomfortable themes. Fear of highs is the most obvious given its title, but it explores child abuse, alcoholism, non-consensual sex, toxic relationships, manipulative partners, and psychopathy among others. It is a title that perhaps it might be a good idea for the player to mind some trigger warnings before playing as it focuses on pushing the limits of one’s comfort zone. It is never gratuitous or for the shock value, it brings up the conversation of nature versus nurture and the true depths of obsession and depravity. Saying anything more about its story could potentially spoil the twist so it might be best to keep it as vague as possible.

If you still crave more Telltale-like titles or a gripping psychological thriller it might be a good choice. A title that invites the player to wonder what is reality and the truth behind Ed’s life…And perhaps make them a little uncomfortable.

Blacksad (2000-)

Blacksad began as a noir comic series, written by Juan Diaz Canales and illustrated by Juanjo Guarnido. The comic series follows the titular John Blacksad, a cat and, of course, a hardboiled detective. He sometimes has the help of Weekly, a least weasel, and Smirnov, a German Shepherd. The comic series spans seven books, with the most recent having been published in 2021 and more expected to be published this year (2023)

Set in the 50s, the books are, as mentioned, presented similarly to a film noir. The authors present readers with a gritty, dark atmosphere, with significant effort in coming off as realistic. Themes of conspiracy, racial tension, and the "red scare" of the time are prominent.

In 2019, an adventure game adaptation was released. It is available for the PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. The game was developed by Pendulo Studios and published by Microids.

In the game, Blacksad must investigate the death of a club owner. The game has several different endings and player choices can alter the world and characters around them. Many regarded the game as being slow and having a slew of technical problems, but gave the story high praise.

Douglasville 1.1 - Arizona neighborhood with pulp storyline for The Sims 2!

Douglasville is a TS2 almost-cc-free neighborhood based on the Spanish videogame Runaway: A Road Adventure.

This neighborhood is set in the fictional region of the Simrizona Desert and it features: beautiful canyon landscapes, a colorful bunch of characters with unique stories and personalities, a treasure hunt, lots inspired by Mexican and Western false front architecture!

Douglasville allows players to let their creativity loose as they decide the paths of the strange characters who inhabit this land: you will have to make choices, pick a side and let the other sink in this greedy treasure hunt who will probably end up in a few casualties. This neighborhood can be a great start for a Build a City Challenge with a few adjustments, or you can keep Douglasville as it is: a small, dilapidated ghost town for the lonely wolves. Speaking of wolves, be careful because you will find a pack of mexican wolves hunting around the area! The main features of Douglasville are:

◉ A desertic neighborhood decorated with the amazingly beautiful Canyon Pack by Kridershot. Enjoy these ARIZONA-INSPIRED LANDSCAPES, if you can fight the heat and the hungry wolves!

◉ 7 HOUSEHOLDS + 2 SIMS IN THE BIN, all characterized by unique backgrounds and, sometimes, featuring storytelling props in their inventories to help you get involved with their stories.

◉ A TREASURE HUNT! The terrible thugs Gustav and Feodor are searching for the Hopi treasure and they have reason to believe Gina Timmins knows something about it. Who will get their greedy hands on the treasure first?

◉ Lots were built in MEXICAN AND WESTERN-FALSE-FRONT STYLES to correctly convey the atmosphere of the United States' South West area. The hood features ONE STARTER HOME to help you include your own sims in the run for the treasure!

Before downloading, I need to give you some warnings:

⚠ This neighborhood includes references to an existing indigenous tribe from North America: the Hopi Tribe. This is directly taken from the videogame Runaway and it's something I decided to keep. I am not Hopi, so my knowledge is limited, and I did what I could with no custom content. It's important for me to specify that I don't want this neighborhood to disrespect native American tribes in any way.

⚠ There are three drag queens living in Douglasville. To keep custom content to a minimum, I decided to create them as women and change their gender behaviour through SimPE (they have male voices, will pee standing and sexually reproduce as men). If you want to be more realistic, you can change their gender to male and dress them up with custom clothes.

⚠ You need a CAMERA MOD. The neighborhood is big and there are lots on the borders of the map, so without a camera mod you would not be able to play the hood as intended.

“DGVL” is the neighborhood folder and it must be extracted in Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/Neighborhoods.

“Douglasville_CC” is the folder containing a small amount of CC required for the neighborhood to appear as intended. It must be extracted in Documents/EA Games/The Sims 2/Downloads. Everything has been sorted in labelled folders to help you organize your cc.
