It is not cold yet, But I feel the chill. The oaks stand naked, Stripped of all color. The world is suddenly Only brown and orange. I have a recollection of pelicans. Enormous white birds, Bobbing on the ocean, Looking for food. She tells me to go now. Move away from his autumn. Focus on a spring In which the world will be new. She says she doesn’t know What the winter will bring. Tells me not to focus On the snow and the drifts it throws up. She told me to remember the pelicans. And to come back to her When they return to the ocean. That she so very much loves. So I move away from his autumn. Because she wants me to. And focus on the pelicans. Day 27: Pelicans Dream

I learned in a documentary that pelicans dream.

Those awkward birds! Asleep & twitching because somewhere in their fun, round heads they’ve fallen into the bottomless ocean.

I would pet one. I would say, “it’s happened to me.”

I’ve grown a fondness I can’t even describe to you, outside of this poem of course, for the birds after watching this documentary. Pelican Dreams. 

Judy Irving, I think? Listen- it’s an incredible thing an artist can do, bring you so close to something you’ve A. never seen B. never cared for. Simply by never having learned of it, of course! I stayed up all night last night after me and J finished watching it, he of course had fallen asleep, but I was awake thinking about how many other living things carry a likeness to us and of course, worrying about my life and money. A typical experience.
