Down-under Australia: Australian Music

As a true blue Australian myself, I have found myself trying to actively listen to and discover more Australian artists recently. The music scene in Australia struggles to break into the mainstream, but there are some real gems out there that deserve the recognition!

The thing about Australian artists is that they most often move from Australia to the United States or elsewhere early in their career, and completely try to abandon their Australian identity (think Iggy Azalea, Kylie Minogue, Sia, Troye Sivan, The Bee Gees, Betty Who, and so forth). However, I have recently discovered some really fantastic Australia-based artists and bands that I thought were worth sharing (I have also included some of my other favourite Australian artists that I'm not too sure are well known outside of Australia)!

orchid ⇢ what’s a song you consider to be perfect?

knives by matoma & FRENSHIP. i'm a little biased, because FRENSHIP is one of my all time favourite artists in the world, but what i specifically like about the song is that it perfectly evokes how i feel about bonds, friendships, and love, plus the production on it is just incredible. chefs kiss for those harmonies. it's one of those songs for me that just hits all the right buttons. then there's even more bonus points for the tom petty reference and talking about camping, because i was a girl scout my entire life and camping is something i loooooove doing with friends.

aloe vera ⇢ what’s something (mundane) you really want to experience in life?

not to be A Purveyor Of Capitalism on main, but because my most common flight path is a 30 hour trek covering about 10,000 miles, i'd really, really like to fly the transpacific leg of my trips back and forth in first or business class, just once for the experience of it.

jasmine ⇢ do you have a movie or book you loved but will never watch/read again?

the book my sister's keeper by jodi picoult. it's a beautifully written book and deals with really complex themes, particularly bodily autonomy, medical emancipation, the bonds between family and how debilitating illness can both bring family together and tear them apart. it's got a very bittersweet ending, and it's a book i cried reading. it's a wonderful read i would recommend, but i'm just not willing to put myself through that again. cuts a little too close to the bone, you know?

wasted by peking duk was the first contender! i didn't discover peking duk until... i want to say triple j hottest 100 2019?? it's electro house type music and the energy is just fantastic. it's one of the songs that absolutely snaps me back to nights out (and nights in, and day events) in the tropics with my partner and friends, playing drinking games, going to the bars and clubs, and post-party hangover breakfasts at the beach, all warm nights and palm trees and swimming in a stranger's pool in our underwear at 4am. it's an instant smile to my face.

Happy bfsn you gorgeous folks!

Welcome to another weekly review of the crap going through my head that no one really asked for 😂 Anyway, as you can see I actually managed to leave my house this week and I went to a concert at my uni. Peking Duk, an Aussie band. Would definitely recommend listening to some of their stuff, particularly the newer songs, but nothing compares to hearing it live. Because of uni lately, it hasn't exactly been sunshine and rainbows in my head. The morning of the concert I didn't even want to go, but I pushed through it and I am so glad I did. Sometimes putting yourself in a situation where you're obligated to do something fun is a great way to actually make sure you get out of bed and go. If I didn't, I'm sure I would have regretted it. Anyway, I think it's important to acknowledge when you're struggling, so that's all that was. Y'all don't have to worry 😘

I nearly wasn't going to include any selfies this week, but then I wanted to show off my new band tee because it's one of the cutest things ever! (maybe I'll actually wear this one unlike the ones I got from all the other concerts I've been to...) Like look at those little adorable dinosaurs! I didn't get a great shot of the back, but you get the general idea. The next photo I took at the concert itself. Last song, and they asked everyone to get someone on their shoulders. The medics on standby looked terrified by that, but to see it, it looked amazing. And finally, the last shot isn't mine, but was from the band's photographer. I just love how it looked
