Happy 80th birthday, José Carioca (Zé Carioca)!

On this day, August 24, 1942, a Disney film called Saludos Amigos was shown, which shows exotic places in South America, primarily Brazil. Yes, although the film had propaganda content in which Brazil entered World War II on the side of the Allies, there was certainly an educational and entertaining content. That film brings something else special. In that film, a character named José Carioca appears for the first time, a parrot from Brazil who is very attractive and friendly and becomes Donald's best friend. Yes, Donald was the then ambassador for making new friends in South America. Later, in the movie The Three Caballeros, Donald will make another best friend, Panchito Pistoles from Mexico. And so the famous trio, The Three Caballeros, was born.

Nevertheless, José Zé Carioca, who first appeared in the movie Saludos Amigos, celebrates his birthday today. And the 80th birthday. Also, I wish him a happy birthday.

One of my favorite Duckverse characters and one of the best fictional parrots, he certainly has a long history as well. After two films, José Carioca also appears in Melody Time, Carnival Time, Mickey Mouse Works, House of Mouse, Mickey and the Roadster Racers, Mickey Mouse Cartoons by Paul Rudish, Ducktales reboot and finally, of course, in Legends of the Three Caballeros. Although he often appears with Panchito in the animation, he is still a separate character. He certainly retained the classic personality he had in the original film. He certainly ended up being great in Mickey Mouse Cartoons and The Legend of the Three Caballeros. Yes, watch out for the accent on his name, he is from Brazil, and Brazilian Portuguese is spoken there.

Apart from animation, José Carioca often appears in comics specially published in Brazil, where he has a different and big role. Besides being a friend of Donald and Panchito, he certainly has his own friends in Brazil such as Nestor, Pedrão Feijoada, Afonsinho and others, also he has his own girlfriend named Rosinha Maria Vaz, who is similar to Donald's girlfriend Daisy. Just like Donald has his nephews, José also has nephews named Zico and Zeca Carioca. Yes, I'm not talking about his family, especially he has a lot of relatives, and he also has his grandmother. I have to admit that I'm not that familiar with Brazilian comics, as well as with the José Carioca family, but I'm certainly gaining more knowledge about them on the Internet lately, and I'm grateful to my friends who introduced me to this world of Zé Carioca comics.

Yes, apart from comics, José is also present in video games and as a mascot and in various Disney merchandise and is quite popular in Latin America, primarily in Brazil and Mexico, but also outside Latin America, such as in Japan. And not to forget, also Jose's very mischievous friend, Aracuan Bird who lives in the Amazon Rainforest.

I first found out about this exemple thanks to the Big Cartoon Wiki. 

This is a Brazilian comic book centered around the character of José Carioca (or Zé Carioca). You may remember him as one of the Three Caballeros). 

The first two pictures here come from the issue number 1423, the story is called “O Sucessor”. The last picture is the cover of issue 1852, called “Rodizio de Feijoada”. 

Thanks to the help of @thiccer-is-better, I could understood what the full story of these pieces were about, thanks again! 

The story of the two pages is centered around the old Brazilian tradition of the “Rei Momo” (King Momo). It is an old-fashioned Carnival tradition. Every time there is a “king of the Carnival” that is supposed to be a fat and jolly person, and that parades alongside the participants of the carnival, or with the local samba schools. In the story, Pedrão, Carioca’s friend, is supposed to be the Rei Momo, but he refuses this position due to an “unpostponable trip”. So, Zé Carioca decides to take the mantle and be the next Rei Momo. But since the Rei Momo needs to be fat and jolly, Zé has to gain weight. 

And for that, he begins a weight loss diet.

That’s the joke here. What happens when you follow a fad weight-loss diet? As the female character says, it never works. You stay fat, or grow even fatter. So of course, Zé Carioca picks a “Fast weight-loss food” book and starts digging. The samba school spends all of its money on the food prescribed by the weight-loss diet, and soon Zé Carioca is fat enough to be a King Momo! In just a fw days he became overweight, if not obese! (Note how his pants are open and unbuttoned. That’s so cute!)

Trouble is, when it comes time to practice and repeat for the parade (because there are choregraphies - it is a Carnival with samba schools after all), they discover something terrible - Zé Carioca can’t move! He can move his legs, but he stays in place. Because he is “not used” to move around with such a heavy and big body. A Rei Momo has to dance and move around! Hopefully Pedrão comes back, he managed to “postpone” his “unpostponable trip”. After realizing that Zé Carioca replaced him as the Rei Momo, he still begs for a little role in the Carnival Parade. The protagonists find the perfect role for him: he’ll be the legs of the Rei Momo! That’s how Pedrão ended up exhausting himself by carrying the obese bird on his back. 

As for the cover, there is also a joke here. Zé and his friend Nestor (who is actually a vulture, I thought he was a crow) are carrying advertisements, on portable billboards. (It is apparently a common informal job near street intersections and traffic light in Brazil. In French, such things are rare but we have a word for them: “sandwich-men”, “les hommes sandwichs”.) Said advertisement is about an all-you-can-eat restaurant serving feijoada. And apparently Zé went there as a client - the joke being, his belly is now so big, the advertisement he wears is impossible to read!

tu acha que o José sabe jogar capoeira? e se sim, em qual nível ele estaria?

se não, ele é só um parça que bate palma na roda?

Eu li exatamente UMA única história em que o Zé joga capoeira e ele tinha meio que um talento natural pra coisa, pelo o que eu me lembro. Não sei se existem mais histórias que explorem essa ideia mas, mesmo que não, acho legal ele ter esse contato com mais uma parte da nossa cultura... então eu diria que SIM, ele sabe jogar capoeira. Acho que apesar do Zé ter o molejo e a ginga, ele ainda seria considerado iniciante na roda de capoeira XD Esse papagaio deve ir mais pra cantar/tocar pandeiro e passar o tempo do que realmente lutar. O Zé não é bem do tipo ativo, afinal. O Pedrão, no entanto, todos sabemos que AMASSA na capoeira e o Afonsinho é mestre no berimbau.

Já que você tem um redesign pra Rosinha, como você acha que o Pedrão seria parecendo mais um furry? O design dele é só um humano com nariz de cachorro kkkkk

KKKKK AIN MAS EU MEIO QUE GOSTO DO DESIGN OFICIAL DO PEDRÃO!!! Acho que depois da Rosinha capaz dele ser o personagem que mais tem alterações no design dependendo dos artistas e em que ano foram feitas (algumas variações no início dos quadrinhos sendo inclusive racistas) No geral eu acho o Pedrão meio divo kkkk acho q eu não mudaria nada no design dele... esses personagens meio que tem que lembrar mais pessoas do que animais mesmo. É só que no caso da Rosinha ela não se assemelhava a animal NENHUM e na minha HUMILDE opinião era necessário um pouco de equilíbrio💀

Nossa, obrigada!!! E quanto a sua pergunta, SIM! Eu já tinha rabiscado alguns primos de outros estados só por diversão mas usei sua ask pra motivar a terminar esses desenhos. Escolhi o Zé Goiano, que já foi mencionado ao menos 2 vezes nos quadrinhos mas que NUNCA teve uma aparição oficial, e criei um Zé Capixaba porque era o último primo que faltava pra completar os estados sudestinos.

Quanto a personalidades, @minimanuke já tinha feito um Zé Goiano e fez ele um político safado do DF kkkkk. Eu decidi só fazer um arco de redenção pra ele. Acho engraçado se esse fosse um segredo passado dele ou então que ele já tivesse sido usado como laranja no gabinete de alguém, mas que agora ele quisesse enterrar essa vida de trambicagem depois de começar a trabalhar com preservação de animais do Cerrado . Já quanto ao Zé Capixaba (por falta de nome melhor) procurei por estereótipos mas…quais são os estereótipos do Espirito Santo??? Então ele seria aquele primo meio apagado que só é lembrado nas reuniões de família ou na hora de pedir um favor, tadinho. Coloquei ele como agente portuário já que é a atividade com mais impacto na economia do estado e, por causa disso, achei que seria legal se ele fosse meio noiado quanto a normas de segurança também. Ou seja, o Zé Capixaba é um cara bem tranquilo, menos quando encontra o Zé Carioca, conhecido por seu jeitinho trambiqueiro e fora das regras.

Eu adoro o seu estilo de arte, e queria perguntar o que você acha da ideia de Zé, Rosinha, Pedrão, Nestor etc consumindo álcool, tipo quais seriam seus favoritos, se o Zé já ouviu algum dos seus amigos reclamar para ele parar com a Skol ou ele ia ganhar aquela barriga de chopp de tio de meia-idade

Se o Zé não sofrer o destino de ter o mesmo shape que o Zeca Pagodinho então qual é a graça? Dizem nas ruas que o Zé na verdade sempre teve uma barriguinha 😌

Acho que pra turma não pode faltar a cerveja ESTUPIDAMENTE gelada e, depois da feijoada, aquela cachacinha pra ajudar a digerir! A Rosinha eu gosto de pensar que curte uns drinks elaborados e super caros, porque se alguém ali tem o dinheiro é ela. Mas ela também deve curtir uma cervejada no bar e caipirinha na praia, se não não andava com o resto da turma KKKK
