okay, so, I've collected a bunch of DP fandom stuff that I remember off the top of my head, specifically in chronological order & colour coded here in this post (fics/comics, tumblr posts, important imo) for no reason other than I saw a post asking for Phandom history & it triggered my biggest, most long-running hyperfixation & now I'm curious if anyone else remembers stuff.

yes. yes i absolutely meant.

admittedly tho i'm debating the 'better as part of a dynamic' bit, bc really Vlad can be fascinating even on his own, but it's also just SO GOOD to throw him into a dynamic with literally any other character and see how he plays off of that character.

like darn it where are my Vlad and Sydney Poindexter fics, huh? or Vlad and the mini golf course manager fics? hmmmmmmmmmm????

(also serious rec here: i used to be kind of meh about Vlad, but pearl84's incredibly careful attention and care towards his character, especially in stories like Checkmate and its sequel Endgame, have completely changed the way i look at him as well as his relationship with Danny. seriously, if you're looking for good, long reads that will bring your emotions to every extreme on the spectrum, check out her fics!!!)

I'm aware of Checkmate, but wasn't that one about Vlad forcing/tricking Danny into staying with him so he won't hurt Jazz?

Because what talking about is a bit different, as it is Danny making a deal without Vlad tricking him into it. There isn't any manipulation or trick involved nor Danny is forced to stay in only Vlad's mansion. He still can visit his family and such on the condition that Vlad knows where he is going and when he is coming back.

(I would like to imagine Vlad puts some tracker on Danny without Danny being aware of that in case he doesn't keep up with his promise).

For example, I still haven’t read “A Snapping Sound”, so it’s not included here, but I understand that it is very good. You may have read most of these already! Checking Out “Checkmate”

Holy snicker-doodles guys! I’ve heard about this fanfiction, seen the fanart, yet never took the time to actually read “Checkmate” by pearl84 on fanfiction.net. I know a few reasons why I didn’t read it before, mostly time constraints, but I’m glad I’m doing it now because it reminds me that I really need to up the ante when it comes to the fight scenes in my own story.

After reading up to chapter...21 so far, I’ve discovered that yeah, big surprise, Vlad’s ACTUALLY evil. Or at least in this story Vlad has gone from cocky-bad-guy--always-announcing-his-evil-plans to someone who was willing to go out of his way to physically harm a HUMAN being for the first time in his life (that we know of besides Jack though we expect this given their past) who is completely innocent who cannot defend themselves in any way against someone more powerful both mentally and literally as Vlad. I hate him for hurting Jazz! Sure she tricked him before but she had NO idea how dangerous he was and bit off more then she could chew which is now coming back to haunt her in a very literal sense.

Kind of weird to say I hate the Vlad in this story since I’m a huge fan of his since in my eyes, regardless of most of the things he’s done to Danny in the show, he has never stepped completely over the line. Though I’ll admit he HAS come close a few times. In this however, I am genuinely hating Vlad right now which as a reader is fantastic! Let me explain why. For one thing it means that this version of Vlad is very well written and I can see what the motivation behind his actions is which only makes his cruel actions and words that much more impacting. Vlad really hates Danny right now in turn for always getting in the way and blames him for killing his prime clone. Essentially Vlad is now putting Danny in the same category as Jack as far as ‘stealing’  something precious from him. But at the same time, here and there Vlad reveals that small part of him does sincerely care about Danny, try as he might to be cold and calculating 24/7. I still think that the real reason behind all of this is that because they are the only two halfa’s in existence Vlad isn’t willing to lose him by either killing the boy himself or one of his allies doing so is because it’s the same as always-

He’s lonely.

There, I said it! Vlad hates Danny but at the same time he wants him to accept his love willingly (twisted as it is though lolz) and longs to have him by his side as something more then a mere pawn but an equal in a lot of ways to fill a terrible void in his life.Vlad’s also used to taking what he wants while Danny is ever the rebel who will keep fighting for his loved ones regardless of how scared and helpless he feels in his current situation. Seriously I know this story is already completed and even has a sequel I’ll have to read next but first I have to finish this first half to find out what actually happens between our favorite two halfa’s. There’s so much angst in this story which has kept me on the edge of my seat so to speak and I freaked out when I realized how much had happened JUST in the first chapter after the prologue.I was hooked. At the same time though I imagined alternate reactions to certain situations and what desperate lengths Danny might go to to escape if and when something like that did happen. I won’t say what those ideas were though since for one they were pretty dark and secondly I might just have to use those ideas in my own way with a different spin on them since a lot of them revolved Dan, aka dark Danny.

Either way, as depressing and infuriating as all this is, it’s a good story and I’ll have to muscle my way through it somehow since I want to know how it ends. I’ll leave a link to it below but I’m sure most of the phans have already read it except for moi. And with that, I’m off to do stuff! Aka, mostly reading more of this... XD

AnneriaWings - a leader of the dissection subgenre, with a fanfiction.net favorites list that reads like a 50+ hour angst playlist

anthrop (ao3) - lots of angst and body horror, some of the absolute coolest prose (and best superphantom crossovers)

Chaos Dragon - works are split between (sometimes mature) Danny/Sam and some of the hardest hitting tragedies I've read in the phandom

Cordria (ao3) - The Place To Begin!!! Several hundred fics once you factor in the oneshot collections, covering literally every genre under the sun and angst that will change you forever

Danny Phantom SG-1 - the author who taught me that fanfiction was designed to be a vessel for angst, will bash you over the head with your own feelings

HaiJu (ao3) - one of the most polished and highly recommended authors in the phandom for a very very good reason

Laora (ao3) - one of my favorite authors of all time, and creator of Empty Promises (ao3) aka the angstiest fic in the phandom

Nylah - fantastically atmospheric angst that I literally have not been able to stop thinking about since I first read them

Phantomrose96 (ao3) - All Of The Angst. Also "it's not gay if he's dead." And no matter where it falls on the angst-to-crack spectrum, it's excellent

Shenzuul - such well written, grounded fics that I keep coming back to read them over and over again

surelysilly (ao3) - incredibly evocative writing style that immediately paints the atmosphere, some really great creepy angsty stuff

Everything else under the sun (including more angst!)

avearia (ao3) - soooooooo many good fics omgggggg

CoronaIgnis - leader in the Ghost King Danny trope, really amazing world building

dpluver - Queen of Snarky Danny and some of my favorite funny and/or fluffy fics in the phandom

KicsterAsh - wonderfully feel-good series about Danny becoming an astronaut

Lacey52 - really well developed trio-focused series with incredible characterization, Danny/Sam

Lynse (ao3) - so so many good fics that it blows my mind (and all sorts of crossovers)

mabel-but-slytherin (ao3) - really intricately thought out theories and premises and crossovers

MsFrizzle - great oneshots and fics with canonically Jewish Sam

MyAibou (ao3) - incredibly well crafted fics and series that explore all the things that the show could have been, it's amazing

pearl84 - author of the biggest fics in the phantom like Checkmate and Dawning of the Sun

PixieGirl13 - so many nice long action-packed fics with some of the best Danny and Vlad interactions out there, some of my absolute faves

PuppetMaster55 (ao3) - angst and romance and crossovers (oh my!!)

sapphireswimming (ao3) - 100+ gen works including plenty of angst, hurt/comfort, friendship, humor (and superphantom crossovers)

SRL541 - not too many fics but every single one of them is so good??

Tay1019411 - all of the hurt, all of the comfort, and then all of the everything else and it's all just so good

The Cinderninja - some of the most beautiful well-thought characterization I've ever seen, I cannot recommend these fics enough

WingsOfMorphius - really good Danny/Sam, well worth reading even if they're incomplete

do you know of any long-ish fics (like 50k or more but I mean i'll also take whatever at this point) that are like fix-it fics for danny phantom? like with actual character development, maturer themes such as being darker or delves deeper into the lore, sam and tuck aren't just sidekicks that get kidnapped, jazz is actually cool and helps out also valerie, they all experience moral dilemmas/existential crisis/emotions etc etc.

HECK YEAH!! Shift by CaptainOzone is an AMAZING take on a post-reveal No One Knows AU, like the characterization in this is just *chef's kiss* and Mortified by FiveRivers (Marsalias) is just one of those I can read over and over again (I know you know that one lol)

A few others I've read multiple times but not recently are Dawning of a Sun by pearl84 (a beast of a fic but it is SO WORTH IT), Complications by Lynse (always love a good Valerie reveal fic), Mirrored by Lynse (really good American Dragon: Jake Long/Danny Phantom crossover!), and Incommunicado by PixieGirl13 (ppl who like exploring the dynamic between Vlad and Danny will go feral over this one hehe)

Lately I've been trying to write at least a tiny bit each day! Sometimes if I'm crazy busy or have block I don't get to it, but I'm just trying to stay flexible with myself :)

Haven't written yet today (it's 8:15 am afshkl) BUT bc I'm nice I'll share a teeny blurb of what I wrote yesterday hehe:

15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?

Uhhh throw a dart and go with whatever it lands on? SDFHLK

In all seriousness, I usually end up just going with a word/phrase I think sounds cool and at least somewhat relates to the story lol. Sometimes I go in with a better title in mind, but more often than not it's a bit of a random choice lol

Oh DO I?! It’s been a while, but DP was my first fandom, and I never forget my roots. First, a note, these will all be links to FF.net because that’s where most of the DP fandom was when I got into it.

Anything by pearl84, but especially this absolute monster of a fic, Checkmate. It’s well over a million words and has a WIP sequel. Personally I don’t like the sequel as much as the first fic, but that’s just due to my own very picky preferences for this specific relationship dynamic, not anything wrong with the writing.

Another of pearl’s fics I’d like to specifically point out is Dawning of a Sun. It’s very AU, and gets very dark and heavy at parts, but I love it a lot.

Aaaand, I’m realizing that most of the stuff I have favorited is pearl’s, haha. I’ll have to go back and skim through the rest of it for more recs, but these monsters will take a while to read anyways. 😅

I’m sure you’ve heard of Checkmate and Endgame written by Pearl84 on FF.net, well, soon EG will be coming to a close but due to normal life complications it’s taken a while between updates and fewer of us seem to remain.

Pearl has written this in her last update:

Pearl was one of the original phans. She started writing Checkmate, in 2006. Before tumblr. Before AO3. Before all these new fandoms we’ve joined. She’s been writing for Danny Phantom for 13 years. 

Checkmate and Endgame both are about developing our hero and having him complete his journey by filling in the gaps int he show and continuing it past PP in order to wrap up everything with Dark Danny, and yes, Vlad. It’s a story about forgiveness, but not forgetting. About consequences and trust. I just... it would mean a lot to me if you guys gave Checkmate and Endgame a try and sent Pearl a tiny review, just so that she sees that the Phandom is not dead.

Checkmate and Endgame are beautiful. And though they have their flaws, they’re also so powerful. This is a 13 year passion project, written for free.

Checking In Again About “Checkmate”

This story is going to be the metaphorical death of me! So many feels! Seriously this is amazing because it has almost made me cry my eyes out several times, it’s made me laugh, and it’s made me want to slap Vlad for being such an idiot when he FINALLY was starting to get his act together and be the kind of man I still see in many other fatherly-Vlad fanfics, someone who is NOT a villain, but a lost soul who needs a LOT of help getting over the one thing holding him down...

Well ok, there are two things but those are his selfishness, and his hatred.

Vlad is selfish and is afraid of taking those risks that come with putting others before himself, namely Danny but also his highschool friend/ex-girlfriend/secretary Stephanie. I didn’t think I’d like this OC friend of Vlad’‘s but she’s grown on me and again I’m with Danny on this! Dude, you’ve already got an attractive SINGLE woman that loves you right here and she has a daughter that thinks the world of you! They WANT to be with him, and if Vlad could just see beyond his own image he would realize that he doesn’t have to steal anything from anyone to get what’s already there for the taking and is being freely given.

Also, Vlad just can’t blame himself for his unhappiness and blames Jack Fenton for EVERYTHING. What happened was an accident, and I’m sure later in the story it’ll reveal why Jack and Maddie didn’t visit him in the hospital. If I had to hazard a guess, I think Stephanie gave them a serious guilt trip for causing the accident and told them if they really cared, they’d leave Vlad alone and let the man heal since she knows him better then they do and knows exactly how much Vlad has already lost. That’s just my theory anyway.

Aside from that, now that I’m 68 chapters in, there are still a lot of unanswered questions and despite the grip this story has on MY core that makes it ache for these characters that aren’t even real. Ironically, it helped me realize a few things about my own real life dad. I won’t get into it but my dad has a lot of the same problems with being selfish and not taking any blame for his actions. Yet, I feel the same way about my dad as I do about Vlad, I care about them in spite of EVERY horrible thing they’ve done and I want them to find that moment of clarity where they realize how wrong they were and try to make amends with true, raw, honest effort with no strings attached.

Sorry that got super personal but...yeah I’m glad I finally read this. And I’m still doing it even though my poor heart just can’t handle all the feels! Once I reach the end the author will have a nice lengthy review to look forward to because this was an AMAZING story that hit all the right cords with me and it has been a roller coaster of emotions, both good and bad. And I dread the moment the ride reaches the end of the tracks...
