A few thoughts on Valerie Gray

Aka, 9 fanfictions I wish existed.

Valerie Gray is one of my favorite characters. It really saddens me that the Phandom doesn’t share my sentiment. Barely a fraction of Fanfiction is devoted to her, and most of it is in the form of canon extension: Valerie discovering that Danny Fenton and Danny Phantom are one and the same.

I understand that trend—we were robbed of Valerie’s reaction, and all Valerie fans are likely curious how the news would’ve gone down. But sadly, this trend makes Val’s fanfics unoriginal, uninspired, repetitive, and barren.

So, I am sharing with you some ideas that I think would make for an interesting change in pace for our dear Valerie. Read on—if you’re inspired, steal some ideas or reblog and add your own. Remember: one can never have too much Valerie Gray.

Past/Memories ft Jack! (this is an unfinished prompt from last year's college trio month. Jack Fenton's backstory, my beloved.)

This is my attempt to create an early childhood for Jack that feels like it could have been canon, right down to the offhanded way Jack talks about what was definitely a traumatic event but isn't handled at all seriously in its presentation.

Jack being the youngest of six boys is something that feels so right to me. This is implied, but the reason why none of his brothers would be mentioned in canon is because all of them think Jack is crazy and try to avoid contact with him, which is easy because they're all scattered across the country. Jack has a tendency to ruin family reunions with his antics, so it's been quite a few years since Jazz and Danny have seen any of their uncles or cousins. And yes, each of Jack's brothers are very successful in stereotypical respectable fields. Jack is the black sheep for being ghost-obsessed, despite being arguably just as much of a genius as the rest of them. (Thematically, I use Jack's distance from his brothers to help illustrate how his friendship with Vlad was special ((there's weight to the fact Jack wants his children to call Vlad their uncle)), and also serve as a sad precursor to where their friendship ends up.)

Jack's beloved grandfather and the most important person in his life was a senile WW1 veteran who saw ghosts everywhere. Jack's earliest memories are of hunting ghosts with him, while the rest of the family humored their games. At about the age of seven or eight, Jack witnessed the appearance of a real ghost that gave his startled grandfather a fatal heart attack on the spot. No one in the family believed him when he said his death was because of a ghost, and they especially weren't amused by Jack's outbursts at the funeral. (Jack talks about this traumatic event in the present in his usual matter of fact, comedic way, of course.)

I have so many thoughts . All the time . Too long ramble about Danny down below ↓

My Deltarune and Danny Phantom obsession has begun to leak into each other and I genuinely can’t help but think about how much (although vaguely) Danny’s mirror character arc would that of WEIRD ROUTE Noelle.

Because, well, both of them are originally very easily frightened kids. Danny’s considered a massive coward by MOST of the kids at school. In S2 E1, when Danny has his memories wiped, we even SEE how he’s genuinely react to Ghosts if he weren’t a halfa. Run away screaming .

But then I thought… isn’t his confidence kind of superficial? Not in the way that he’s, like, egotistical or whatever. His ego is very typical of a traumatized and slightly annoying teenage boy. But he GETS his confidence from fighting ghosts, aka, via violence. Sure, he has no “player” esque entity guiding him, BUT… there IS someone who WOULD gladly take that role……. (It’s Vlad, it’s always Vlad)

In the later seasons, Danny becomes more pacifistic (and especially in the AGIT comic), but he started out a wimpy kid and got more confident by exerting violence against other Ghosts. It’s kind of got me wondering if his character arc would have ended up a one to one with Noelle’s, had he taken on Vlad’s apprenticeship, or if Vlad had found out about him being a halfa earlier on.

In a way, the only reason Vlad DIDN’T get Danny under his thumb is because 1. He threatened his family, and 2. Danny had fought enough Ghosts, gotten confident enough, gotten STRONG enough, to not be as easily controlled as he otherwise would have . I dunno, just food for thought :,)
