jeggy text fic!?! can you tell us about around the corner!!
Ooooh yes, so happy to! Thanks for the ask!
I plan to make it my next project after TCOS - it's all outlined and I already wrote an opening scene and then had to forcibly stop myself because I could see it taking over my life like PS. did and I really do want to finish TCOS first. I kinda went back and forth on whether it should be prongsfoot or jegulus because I wanted to write a prongsfoot text fic (there aren't any, or I don't know about them), but the theme doesn't really suit prongsfoot, and the idea started with jegulus, so I've decided to stick with it.
So anyway, it's a You've Got Mail AU, and if you know the movie, you can guess that James and Regulus will be friends online and rivals/enemies IRL. In the movie, a small bookstore owner fights against a Bezor-like (although less sleazy) character with his huge chain, I'm gonna make James run a small coffee/cat shelter, and the Black family opens a giant new branch of their coffee chain around the corner (title drop baby!). And who's overseeing the new project? Why Regulus Black, of course.
There's going to be a lot of shenanigans, vet Sirius, kitties running rampant, exasperated Remus, and a lot more. Since it's based on a romcom, it will be mostly unserious with a touch of angst, maybe, but there will be no stabbing and mostly no suffering. And the Black Brothers will not have a super close relationship but they won't be antagonistic, so no BB angst this time. Anyway, here's a snippet:
Remus: Did you see it?
James: See what? Could you be more specific, Moony? I can read your texts, not your mind.
James: Or are we playing a game?
James: Did I see a man wearing a fox as a hat?
James: Once, but not today.
James: I think it was taxidermied. I hope it was taxidermied. For the fox’s sake. Being paraded on a sweaty bloke’s head through London? Talk about a cruel and unusual punishment.
James: Or maybe something else. Did I see the last episode of Severance?
James: Yes, and what a complete mindfuck. My head is still reeling.
James: I really want a drag of what the screenwriters are smoking. Looks like the good stuff.
Remus: Imagine me pinching my nose in frustration. How are you able to type that fast?
James: Voice messaging features. Welcome to the future, baby.
James: Better question is, why aren’t you taking advantage of it?
Remus: Because the future is dark and full of terrors and chatty bosses. Also, I’m on the bus, and people would give me nasty looks. Tell me, are you at the shop?
James: You know it. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
James: Speaking of Peanut the Cat, of course, but it applies to me too.

💜 with Mashton? I'm so Mashton deprived. The cons of shipping and underrated ship 😭 please and thank you :)
-sharlotte <3
alrighty! a little thanksgiving thing, 1 week after (usa) thanksgiving
mashton: surprise kiss/impulsive kiss
"Is everyone else asleep?" Michael asks, creeping into the kitchen where Ashton is illuminated by the fridge light, a silhouette bent over rifling through the cheese drawer.
"I think so," Ashton says, straightening and flashing Michael a smile. He lets the fridge door swing closed empty-handed, popping a handful of trail mix from the bowl on the counter into his mouth instead. Michael joins him in leaning against it, briefly rubbing at his eyes before checking the time on the microwave clock.
1:23 am. Not bad for a big gathering with most of their friends.
"Today went well," Ashton says, offering Michael the trail mix bowl. He takes his own handful, even though he isn't particularly hungry. They've been eating on and off all day after the huge lunch they prepared, but Michael has a hard time resisting food when it's in front of him, and the trail mix has chocolate chips in it.
"We should do this again next year," Ashton hums, tossing a peanut in the air and failing to catch it in his mouth. Michael snorts.
"I'm exhausted. Don't talk to me about hosting a friendsgiving again for at least eight months."
Ashton tosses another peanut up, this time managing to get it. Michael gives an appropriate noise of approval, more subdued in the dark kitchen than he was when Calum and Ashton were tossing food to each other earlier in the afternoon.
Thankfully, Ashton doesn't try to catch any other peanuts. Michael is too tired to clean up after him right now. His social battery is completely depleted, and after deep cleaning the apartment yesterday and helping Ashton cook an elaborate meal today, he's ready to hibernate for weeks.
It was a good day. Luke and Calum arrived early and are staying over in Ashton's room. Scores of other friends appeared in time for lunch, loaded with enough side dishes that their tiny little dining table and all of the kitchen counters were covered. Their modest apartment doesn't have enough seating, but guests were happy to take up residence on the floor, carefully balancing their plates on the carpet or their crossed legs while everyone pretended to watch the football game. In reality, conversation was flowing from too many directions to hear much of what the announcers were saying, a contrast to the quieter morning when Michael actually did get to see some of the Macy's parade. The sound of multiple people's voices at once got too overwhelming for him, but Ashton sent him to the kitchen to escape halfway through under the guise of checking on the pies, a reprieve that Michael is thankful for. Even just half a room of distance between him and the bulk of the noise helped, and Ashton kept sending him smiles between words.
After lunch, they split off to play board games and card games. Michael absolutely dominated at Fluxx, then dessert was served. When everyone was full and content from various pies and cookies, the day wound down as a few people took their leave and the rest lounged in various places around the apartment. Michael joined the group in the living room, squished on the couch between Luke and the corner with a Hallmark holiday movie on tv. He ended up dozing until Luke accidentally elbowed him awake, then challenged him to MarioKart. Ashton prepared the pizzas that they picked up yesterday for dinner, and more and more guests tapered off after with hugs and well-wishes.
Eventually, only Calum and Luke remained. The four of them stayed up well into the night, catching up, enjoying being physically present instead of multiple cities away, and eating more pie. They all cleaned up as much as they could, then Calum and Luke finally retired to Ashton's room for the night.
It was exhausting, but good. Michael probably will let Ashton host again next year, as long as they're still roommates and they stay in this apartment or find a bigger one.
They make a good team. Michael already knew this, but it was clear at every moment today, from Ashton automatically grabbing Michael's favorite beverage for him when he got his own to Michael running out early this morning to buy more decks of cards so Ashton could play his favorite card game with as many people as wanted to. They easily moved around each other in the kitchen, Michael seamlessly following Ashton's directions and Ashton passing him whatever ingredient he needed before Michael had to ask.
"What was your favorite part?" Ashton asks. Michael hums, giving himself time to think.
"I liked when Calum made you laugh so much you almost shot soda out of your nose," he says.
"Oh, fuck off," Ashton laughs. Michael loves his laugh. He heard it dancing through their apartment a lot today, drifting to Michael's ears no matter where in the apartment it came from.
"What about you?" Michael asks.
"My favorite part?" Ashton clarifies. Michael nods. "I don't think it's happened, yet."
Michael barely has time to let out a confused "Huh?" before Ashton swoops forward and presses their lips together firmly. It only lasts for a second, not enough time for Michael to so much as close his eyes before it's over and Ashton steps out of his space again. Michael blinks at him, cursing the low light for not giving him a clear view of Ashton's face while he tries to figure out what's going on.
"Huh?" he asks again. Ashton huffs, a lacking echo of his earlier laugh.
"There," he says, gesturing vaguely towards Michael. "That was my favorite part. And if you never want it to happen again that's fine, I probably shouldn't have sprung it on you and I wasn't really thinking--"
"It can happen again," Michael says, words leaping out of him without thought. Ashton's mouth closes with a definitive click. Michael waits for one tense breath, then another, then Ashton grins.
"Oh," he says. "Cool."
Ashton swoops forward again, but this time Michael is ready to meet him.
It's his favorite part of the day, too.

nct 127 as a baseball team
current masterlist | fic recs
part 2

Johnny: first baseman, with the obvious height advantage, known for his stretching catches, hands out peanuts and other snacks that he has in his pockets to people waiting at first base, friends with all the first-base coaches of other teams, cheers so loud from the dugout that its always captured on broadcast
Taeyong: catcher, the eyes and ears and the person in charge on the field at all times, seriously has eyes like a hawk, very intense when he's playing but as soon as he's in the dugout he's like "is everyone hydrated? Who needs snacks?", always the first to rush to an injured player, even if they are in the outfield bc he loves his teammates
Yuta: left field, despite being so far out always manages to gain the stadium's attention, whether it be through a perfect jump-catch or a diving save into the stands (which happens a LOT), once fell into the stands to make a catch and came out with the ball AND a fan's number, lowkey everyone's baseball crush (have you seen his face?)
Doyoung: third base, easily one of the most strategic players next to Taeyong, always looking for an opportunity to shift the tide of the game, is chairman of the Pitcher Protection Squad, makes sure the locker rooms are cleaned by everyone before they leave, is close friends with the team nutritionist to make sure everyone eats well
Jaehyun: center field, probably one of the most athletic members of the team, has a whole compilation of center field home run saves because of how high he can jump, once did a leap over a catcher to get a run (like THIS), everyone thinks he looks normal and then he'll say something out of pocket with complete nonchalance its scary
Winwin: relief pitcher, comes in clutch but everyone forgets him by the end of the game (which is NOT his fault, he's doing his best), his leg kick to pitch is the highest in the league, the team definitely still babies him a LOT when they travel, often gets called to lead the team in stretches and help the PTs
Jungwoo: right field, one of the most beloved members of the team, was added late into the season but easily made a great impression, created the outfielder's celebration when they get out of an inning successfully, gives the funniest interviews after games, and always makes sure to give love back to his team
Mark: Shortstop/second base, could literally play any position on the team successfully AND bats extremely well, came into the league super young with high expectations on his shoulders AND delivers every season, tied with Jaehyun's record for most jump-catches, regularly gets the silent treatment after home runs (before they celebrate)
Haechan: starting pitcher, the definition of "if my mouth doesn't say it my face will", also an absolute whiz on the mound and he knows it, has gotten ejected from a few games because of the sass but that's why everyone loves him, throws a nasty curveball with a smile, asked for a parade after getting his first no-hitter (and they almost did it too)

JWIN Deleted Scene 1
It's been a while, hasn't it? I was looking to write something Frank a week or two ago when a friend suggested writing a deleted scene from JWIN. To keep me on track. I've got some smart friends huh?
Anyway, here you go. You only have to have read up to Chapter 7 (either version). Not highly edited, kind of written on vibes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The shell made a satisfying splintering sound before he crushed it between his fingers. He removed the peanuts, placing them in the palm of his other hand as he discarded the rest. Then, he popped the nuts into his mouth. The movements were done absently, as his eyes were glued to the television in front of him which was currently broadcasting the Phillies’ game. Before he even stopped chewing he plucked another peanut from the bowl and began the process again.
Truth be told, he wasn’t even that focused on the game. It was just something to look at, clear his mind of all the usual thoughts, stop it from wandering to darker things. He did like baseball, but his life was so busy, so unpredictable, it was hard to follow closely. He relished the moments he could catch a game and not have to read about it in the next day’s paper. But that’s when he was stateside. Good luck even trying to figure out the scores outside of the US. Even the year before, he hadn't known they'd won the Series until he got home a week later and saw the remains of dirty confetti that still littered the streets after the parade.
He dusted his hands off in his jeans and picked up his beer. The broadcast had gone to commercial, so he took the opportunity to scan the bar. Even though he wasn’t actively paying attention, he always had some kind of idea of who was coming in and out of the place. Constantly aware of who was around him. It was instinct, like knowing the distance between his spot at the bar and the nearest exits.
A couple walked up to the bar and stood close to him. Nothing remarkable about them. They ordered their drinks from the bartender and took them back to their booth. As they moved away, his eyes fell on a book on the floor. It was wedged between the stool and the front of the bar. He leaned over, long arms able to reach it without hopping off the stool. He again glanced around the bar to see if the owner would make themselves known.
But no one reacted. No one ran back in, breathless, realizing they had forgotten their book. Almost surprising anyone would notice it was gone, maybe relieved to not have to lug the heavy thing around. He moved to flag down the bartender. Maybe they had a lost-and-found they could keep it in. But the title caught his eye. The cover was a little different, but he recognized it.
In that moment he was transported back to a tiny apartment in East Berlin.
“You can borrow that if you like. It’s good.” “Not sure if I’d have the time to read it and get it back to you.”
He sucked in a breath. In the end, it was she who didn’t have the time.
He wondered if she got through the stack of books. Were they still waiting for her to finish them? Stacked neatly on that small table off her kitchenette? Or had some other officer taken over her apartment and tossed them? What happened to any of her stuff? She didn’t have any family. Were they donated? Probably trashed. Probably trashed all of it. The books, the clothes. That sweater that used to annoy her because it never stayed in place.
Wonder if Adler or Sims kept any of it. They’d have been the only ones who might want something of hers. Knowing them, though, probably not. You start collecting stuff you can’t bear to get rid of it. Then, your home becomes more of a memorial. A place to remember the dead instead of a space for the living.
And what if he had taken that book from her that day? Having a piece of a dead person like that. A physical reminder shoved in the bottom of his duffle. Forgotten about it until he had to do laundry when he made it home. He made it home.
How come he gets to live when everyone else around him keeps dying?
He set the book on the bar and flagged down the bartender. He ordered another beer, and when it came, he hopped off the stool. He tucked the book under his arm and took his beer to a booth. He sat down and placed the book in front of him.
For the space of a few sips of his beer, he sat there and stared at the cover. Then he opened the book, wincing as he accidentally cracked its spine, and began to read.

The Masked Singer: S12 E9 (Group C Finals/“A ‘Peanuts’ Thanksgiving”)
Tonight’s episode is a special Thanksgiving episode themed around the beloved comic strip and animated franchise Peanuts. As the judges have already used their “Ding Dong Keep It On” save to keep Goo 🤮 during the Group B finals, we know for a fact that two celebrities will be unmasked tonight, with the Group C winner going on to next week’s Quarterfinals and take on Buffalos 🦬, Wasp 🐝, and Goo 🤮.
As always, I post before watching the unmaskings, so these are guesses, not spoilers. I am watching on a delay, but the show itself was delayed almost a half-hour due to late-running football coverage on Fox (the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions both have annual games on Thanksgiving Day). I was able to extend the recording accordingly.
I think I have an idea who all three of these are, but let’s see if this will cement them for me.
Strawberry Shortcake 🍓 🍰: Says she was in a “big parade” and growing up she and her family would sing at the top of their lungs. So I’m guessing she has performed at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and comes from a musical family. A gold pen capped with music notes. We see a horse and carriage, and petting a plush cow. The bonus clue: Mouse ears! This definitely solidifies that this is a former Disney Channel star. I’m sticking with my guess from the beginning, AJ Michalka. (Former Disney Channel star with her sister Alyson, and AJ went on to costar with Hayley Orrantia on The Goldbergs.)
Royal Knight 👑 ⚔️: A mic with a wine bottle. She has children. We see a boomerang. She recently had a baby. The bonus clue: A book proclaiming her a “best selling author”. Based on past clues, I’m still thinking that this is Jana Kramer.
Sherlock Hound 🕵️♂️ 🐶: Has gone through a few “new beginnings” and says his career and an “expiration date”. We see him holding an Ace of Diamonds ♦️. Recently found new love. The bonus clue: an oven mitt reading “Pitch Perfect”. Another baseball clue! Well, professional athletes tend to have short careers, and there have been a lot of baseball clues with this guy (including two references to diamonds). Along with past clues (including a couple of Boston Red Sox references), I’m sticking with Bronson Arroyo. And it looks like Robin’s finally on to him!

Celebrating Pride
We got off to a slow start Saturday morning, thanks to a difficult night’s sleep for both of us. My blood sugar had dropped a bit more, down to 249. Got to keep avoiding those mocha shakes and carbs.
When we finished our coffee and morning brain games, we headed out for the Eugene Pride event, in Alton Baker Park, located along the Willamette River and a stone’s throw from the University of Oregon’s Autzen Stadium. We discovered this park while walking along the river path following a meal at the nearby McMenamins North Bank not long after we arrived.
Oregon Pride events are celebrated throughout several months, from June to September, primarily to allow communities around the state to support each other. Eugene celebrates Pride in August, while Salem holds a parade and block party in June, and Portland now holds its celebration in July.
Nancy fell over a curb on the way in, and when we got to the first aid tent, it was staffed by folks from the same medical office where granddaughter Kathleen works. When we mentioned her name, the young woman who was bandaging Nancy’s knee said, “Oh, we love Kathleen!” That was a nice thing to hear.
There was plenty to see and thousands of people to watch, including two stages, lots of food trucks, and many tents and booths from a variety of groups and organizations, including a number of churches. Representatives from St. Thomas were there throughout the day.
We chatted briefly with some folks at the Eugene Gay Men’s Chorus tent. One of them was familiar with Tucson’s gay men’s chorus, Reveille. Sadly, we arrived too late to hear their performance, but they will be presenting a holiday concert in December. We will definitely try to make that.
We only lasted about ninety minutes before all the walking and the increasing heat got to us. On the way back, we stopped in downtown Springfield for another visit to Cornucopia on Main Street. Nancy’s daughter and son-in-law introduced us to the place, and we have been back a couple of times.
After working up an appetite at Pride, we were in the mood for their good hamburgers and tots. Nancy went for the cheeseburger with cheddar and all the fixings. I got the mushroom and Swiss burger. We brought home half the tots for later consumption.
Following our post-lunch nap, we started to get the lawnmower ready for Kathleen and Ronin’s assistance. When Nancy and I finally pulled it out of the box, however, it was already assembled. We just had to open and extend the handle and attach the basket for catching the cuttings.
Then we cut the lawn and Ronin did some edging. When we were finished, they packed up the lawnmower to take to Kathleen’s place, where there is even more lawn to cut than at our place. She reported later that they managed to cut their entire lawn without needing to charge the battery again.
Since Nancy and I did a lot of walking earlier in the day, we passed on wandering around our neighborhood in the evening. And because of the big meal consumed earlier, we passed on dinner. Instead, we dived right into an evening of streaming, with our snacking peanuts and a bowl of green grapes nearby.

Malaysia Cultural
Malaysia is a multi-cultural society. The main ethnic groups are the native Malays as well as large populations of Chinese, and Indians. When visiting the country it is clear that the ethnicities retain their religions, customs and way of life.
Gawai Dayak parade: Iban girls in a Gawai Dayak parade, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.
Malaysia has a rich cultural life, much of which revolves around the traditional festivities of its diverse population. The major Muslim holidays are Hari Raya Puasa (“Holiday of Fasting”), or Aidilfitri (ʿĪd al-Fiṭr), to celebrate the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, and Hari Raya Haji (“Holiday of the Pilgrimage”), or Aidiladha (ʿĪd al-Aḍḥā), to celebrate the culmination of the season of pilgrimage to Mecca. Buddhists honour the life of the Buddha on Hari Wesak (“Wesak Day”), and Chinese Malaysians celebrate Chinese New Year. Deepavali (Diwali), a Hindu festival of lights spanning several days, is observed by many Indian Malaysians, while Christmas is the principal holiday of the Christian community. On most of these holidays, it is customary to host an “open house,” where guests are treated to Malaysian delicacies and hospitality. A holiday that spans all ethnic groups and religions is Hari Kebangsaan (National Day), a celebration of Malaysia’s independence on August 31.

The states have their own holidays. Sarawak, for instance, celebrates Gawai Dayak (“Dayak Festival”). Rooted in the harvest rituals and festivities (gawai) of the Iban and Bidayuh peoples, this holiday broadly honours the state’s non-Malay indigenous heritage.
Beyond the official holidays and other religious festivities, important life events such as birth, circumcision (for young Muslim men), and marriage are usually celebrated by a feast, known in Malay as kenduri. The wedding ceremony is generally the most important and elaborate of such events among both Malay and non-Malay peoples. In rural areas the kenduri is normally held at the house of the host family, while in urban areas the feast often takes place in a large hall or hotel.
Nasi Lemak, the national dish of Malaysia
Malaysian cuisines reflect the mixture of ethnic groups in the country’s population. The three most prominent cuisines are Chinese, Indian, and Malay. Popular Chinese foods include sweet-and-sour Cantonese dishes and a milder favourite, Hainanese chicken rice. Indian cuisine ranges from the hot vegetarian dishes of southern Indian cooking to the more subtly spiced Muslim Indian food to the yogurt-marinated meats of tandoori cookery from northern India. All these foods, while recognizably Chinese or Indian, have developed a distinctly Malaysian character.
Traditional Malay cuisine consists of white rice served with various curries and fried dishes. Sate, small skewers of chicken or beef dipped in a spicy peanut sauce, nasi goreng (“fried rice”), and nasi lemak (“fatty rice”), which is coconut rice served with fried anchovies, peanuts, and a curry dish, are among the most common Malay foods. Noodles, cooked and served in various styles, are also local favourites.
Non-Muslim indigenous peoples of Peninsular and East Malaysia typically eat a staple food such as rice, tapioca, or sago served with locally grown or gathered vegetables (e.g., ferns and tapioca leaves) and fish, wild boar, venison, or other game. The food is generally not spicy or only mildly so.
Cultural institutions

The history and cultural life of Malaysia are exhibited primarily in various museums in Kuala Lumpur and several state capitals throughout the country. Built in a Malay architectural style in 1963, the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur houses a diverse archaeological and ethnographic collection that documents Malaysia’s social, cultural, artistic, and economic history. The Perak Museum in Taiping is the oldest museum in Peninsular Malaysia and contains collections of the natural history and material culture of the region. The Penang Museum and Art Gallery highlights Penang Island’s immigrant and colonial history. In East Malaysia, the Sabah Museum in Kota Kinabalu and the Sarawak Museum in Kuching, both established in the late 19th century, chronicle the unique prehistory and history of these states and their peoples.

In addition to the broadly ethnographic or historical museums, there also are numerous institutions dedicated to the documentation of particular Malaysian phenomena. The Islamic Arts Museum in Kuala Lumpur, for instance, traces the advent and growth of the art and culture of Islam in Malaysia from the 7th century to contemporary times. Other such topical museums include a numismatic museum, a museum of telecommunications, and an armed forces museum, all located in the capital city.
Malacca Art Gallery
Malaysia is home to many art galleries and theatres for the performing arts as well. The National Art Gallery has permanent exhibitions of modern paintings by Malaysian artists and rotating exhibitions of art from around the world. Plays, dances, and musical productions by Malaysian and international performers are staged regularly at the grand national theatre, called the Istana Budaya (“Palace of Cultures and Arts”), in Kuala Lumpur.
Sports and recreation
Sepak Takraw is considered Malaysia's national sport.
Sports in Malaysia are a mixture of traditional and Western games. From the mid-19th century, British expatriates introduced football (soccer), cricket, track and field events, and rugby to the peninsula; they formed a number of clubs and organized competitions. The Malaysia Cup (formerly the H.M.S. Malaya Cup), first contested in 1921, is the country’s premier football competition.

Traditional sports also enjoy local popularity. Top-spinning (main gasing) competitions are seriously contested, with winning tops often spinning for well over an hour. In some areas, top spinning is not merely a random pastime but is associated with the agricultural cycle. Kite flying also is a favourite activity, as are bird-singing contests, which may feature hundreds of birds, all with unique songs. Sepak takraw (“kick ball”) is a uniquely Southeast Asian game (now played in other regions) that is similar to volleyball but is played with a woven rattan ball and without using the hands. The sport is internationally competitive, and Malaysia has fronted winning teams.

Malaysia made its debut at the Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956. At the 1992 and 1996 Summer Games the country took medals in men’s badminton. Malaysia was one of the founders of the biennial Southeast Asian Games and has hosted the event several times since its inception in 1957.
Media and publishing
The press is the principal source of information in urban areas of Malaysia. The newspapers are all privately owned (many by political parties) and vary greatly in circulation, quality of reporting, and news coverage. Dozens of daily papers circulate in all the major languages of the country, including Malay, English, Chinese, and Tamil. In Sabah several dailies also are issued in the Kadazan language.

Although many public and private radio stations cater to urban listeners, radio is the primary information channel in remote rural areas. Both on the peninsula and in East Malaysia, the government-operated Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) broadcasts in Malay, English, and assorted Chinese languages, as well as in various indigenous languages, such as Iban in Sarawak. RTM also broadcasts internationally in Arabic, English, Chinese, and the national languages of several of Malaysia’s Southeast Asian neighbours.
Television is a popular medium across geographical and linguistic boundaries. The government had a monopoly on television broadcasting until the mid-1990s, when it opened the industry to private operators. Since that time several commercial stations have been established, and the emergence of private cable and satellite companies has allowed television broadcasting to reach the most remote rural regions of the country.Ooi Jin BeeThomas R. Extending well into the western zone of the Southeast Asian archipelago, the Malay Peninsula has long constituted a critical link between the mainland and the islands of Southeast Asia. Because Malaysia itself is divided between the two regions, the history of the country can be understood only within a broad geographic context. The Strait of Malacca, narrowly separating the peninsula from the archipelago, has been a crossroads for peoples, cultures, and trade passing through or taking root in both areas. Influences from China, India, the Middle East, and, later, Europe followed the maritime trade. Peninsular Malaysia and the two states of East Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah, have shared many historical patterns, but each region also has developed in unique ways.

Prehistory and the rise of Indianized states
Malaysia’s prehistory remains insufficiently studied, but bone and artifact discoveries at the Niah Cave site in northern Sarawak confirm that the area was already inhabited by Homo sapiens about 40,000 years ago. The vast cave complex contains remains that not only indicate a nearly unbroken succession of human visits and occupations but also chronicle the evolution of stone tools until some 1,300 years ago. Peninsular Malaysia has been inhabited for at least 6,000 years, archaeologists having unearthed evidence of Stone Age and early Bronze Age civilizations; Neolithic culture was apparently well established by 2500 to 1500 bce. Early historical studies postulated that successive waves of peoples—ancestors of the contemporary Malays—migrated into the region from China and Tibet during the 1st millennium bce, pushing earlier inhabitants into the western Pacific or remote mountain enclaves. More recently it has been suggested that the southward migration consisted of small groups who imposed their culture and language and created new ethnic fusions.

Small Malay kingdoms appeared in the 2nd or 3rd century ce, a time when Indian traders and priests began traveling the maritime routes, bringing with them Indian concepts of religion, government, and the arts. Over many centuries the peoples of the region, especially those within the royal courts, synthesized Indian and indigenous ideas, making selective use of Indian models—including Hinduism and Mahayana Buddhism—in shaping their political and cultural patterns. The most significant complex of Indianized temple ruins has been found around Kedah Peak in northwestern Peninsular Malaysia.
Because the peninsula and northern Borneo both lacked broad, fertile plains, they were unable to support the high population densities that were the foundation of other, more powerful Southeast Asian civilizations, such as those that flourished on the island of Java and on the mainland in what is now Cambodia. However, scant documentation, chiefly from Chinese written sources, suggests that perhaps 30 small Indianized states rose and fell in Malaya—the Malay region of the peninsula—during the 1st millennium ce. The most important of these states, Langkasuka, controlled much of the northern part of the region.

Malaya developed an international reputation, both as a source of gold and tin and as the home of renowned seafarers; as its reputation grew, however, Malaya increasingly was exposed (or subjected) to cultural influences from surrounding powers. Between the 7th and 13th centuries many of the region’s small, often prosperous maritime trading states likely came under the loose control of Srivijaya, the great Indianized empire based in Sumatra. At various times, other Indianized powers of Southeast Asia—including the Khmer (Cambodian) empire based at Angkor, the Tai kingdom of Ayutthaya, and the Majapahit empire centred in eastern Java—also claimed suzerainty in the region. These early cultural forces in Malaya left a living legacy, traces of which are still evident in the political ideas, social structures, rituals, language, arts, and other traditions of Malay Muslims.
Although development was slower in more remote, less fertile northern Borneo, the area that is now Sarawak had entered the Iron Age by ce 600. Archaeological excavations in the Sarawak River delta have revealed much evidence not only of early ironworking but also of extensive trade with China and the Southeast Asian mainland. The local peoples offered edible bird’s nests, rhinoceros horns, hornbill “ivory” (from the casque atop the bird’s beak), camphor, spices, wood, and other goods in exchange for Chinese ceramics, metal, and probably clothing. Meanwhile, Neolithic boatbuilders along the east coast of present-day Sabah were involved in extensive interregional trade; the maritime peoples of the area called the territory the “land below the wind” because it lay south of the tropical cyclone (typhoon) belt.
