Comparing Coscraft wig colors to Classe Sara
Classe Sara is one of my favorite fibers, but it’s a bit difficult to figure out the colors without a swatch book and since you need a shopping service, it can be inconvenient to order the swatches first. I decided to compare my Coscraft ring to my Classe Sara book to find the closest colors. Spoiler: while they overlap a lot in the natural tone range, the fun color range is really different!
Why would you want this btw? Because Sara has the least tangly fiber on the cosplay wig market. Period. You cannot get wigs that tangle less than Sara and believe me I have tried.
This chart shows when a Coscraft color has a close match for Classe Sara. When the match is near exact (like I could probably get away with using wefts of one in a wig of the other), I’ve marked this. When there’s a color that’s halfway between two very similar colors, I’ve also marked this. For things where there’s no close match but there’s vaguely similar colors, I’ve listed the closest options after saying no match. When there’s nothing remotely close, I marked it as “absolutely no match”.
Incredibly long list under the cut!
White: SS08 (near exact match)
Misty White: SS01
Silver: SS02 (Coscraft is lighter)
Grey: SS02 (Coscraft is darker: SS02 is the exact midway point between the two Coscraft shades)
Natural Black: SBK02 (Coscraft is warmer)
Black: SBK01 (near exact match)
Darkest Purple: no match (closest is SPP07, which is much more muted and a bit lighter)
Deep Purple: no match at all. it’s more saturated by a lot
Purple: SPP09
Plum: no match (closest is SPP05 but plum is much redder)
Greyish Purple: no match at all. it is far more blue than any of the Sara purples
Glow Purple: no match. Closest is SPP08 but Glow Purple is a full shade lighter
Lavender: no match. Closest is SPP08, which is more desaturated
Lilac: absolutely no match
Blue Grey: SDB06
Darkest Blue: SDB01 (Coscraft is a smidge darker)
Navy: also SDB01 (near exact match)
Midnight Blue: SDB05 (also a near exact match)
Royal Blue: no match (SDB02 is closest but Coscraft is significantly more saturated)
Azure: SBL05 (Coscraft is bluer and more saturated)
Peacock: absolutely no match whatsoever
Cobalt: SBL03
Indigo Blue: absolutely no match
Sky blue: no match (closest is SMB01 but Coscraft is lighter and bluer)
Storm Blue: absolutely no match
Baby Blue: no match (closest is SBL01. Coscraft is less purple and a bit lighter)
Ice Blue: absolutely no match
Pale Olive: absolutely no match whatsoever. Pale Olive is virtually undupeable
Slate Green: absolutely no match whatsoever
Pale Teal: no match (closest is SGR01. Coscraft is bluer and less saturated)
Teal: no match (it’s halfway between SBL05 and SMB01)
Pale Mint: absolutely no match
Lime Green: no match (halfway between SGR03 and SGR04)
Forest Green: absolutely no match. nothing is as saturated
Emerald: SGR07 (near exact match)
Matcha Green: absolutely no match
Midnight Green: no match (closest are SGR05 and SGR06 but Coscraft is more saturated)
Dark Green: SGR06 (near exact match)
Titanium Blonde: SS01 (Coscraft is warmer)
Oyster: SS05 (Coscraft is warmer)
Platinum Blonde: SGD16
Champagne: SGD05
Ash Blonde: SGD13 (Coscraft is lighter)
Pale Ash Blonde: no match (closest is SGD05 but Coscraft is both cooler and lighter)
Wheat Blonde: SS06
Milkmaid Blonde: SGD01 (near exact match)
Pale Yellow Blonde: both SGD04 and SGD15 are close matches, but SGD15 is closer
Primrose Yellow: no match (halfway between SGD10 and SGD12
Gold: both SDG01 and SY01 are close matches. I can barely tell which is closer
Honey: halfway between SGD11 and SGD12 (SGD12 is yellower)
Mango: absolutely no match
Peach: no match (closest is SOR01, Coscraft is pinker)
Melon: SR08 (Coscraft is more saturated)
Ginger: SOR04
Dark Strawberry Blonde: no match (SOR04 is the same undertone but a full shade darker)
Copper: SR04
Peachy Copper: no match (closest is SRB04. Coscraft is less saturated)
Sandy Blonde: no CLOSE match, but feels incredibly similar to SGD05, SGD08, SGD09, and SGD13. They’re all in the same color family.
Caramel: halfway between SBR06 and SBR07
Toffee: SBR04 (Toffee is a smidge pinker)
Chestnut Brown: redder than SYB04 and more yellow than SRB01
Rich Dark Brown: no match (somewhere between SBR01 and SYB04)
Deadwood Brown: SGD13
Matt D Brown: SBR02
Very Dark Brown: SRB02
Brown Black: SBK02
Mauve: absolutely no match
Pink Blonde: absolutely no match
Sugar Pink: absolutely no match. far cooler than any Sara pink
Soft Pink: SPK01
Rose Pink: no match (SPK07 is similar but less intense)
Milkshake Pink: SPK03 (Coscraft is lighter)
Fandango Pink: no match (it’s less saturated and cooler than SPK06)
Fuchsia: SPK06 (Coscraft is more saturated. SPK06 is the midpoint between Fandango Pink and Fuchsia)
Flame Red: SR07
Coral: SPK09
Cherry: no match (it’s a bit lighter and cooler than SR09)
Red: SR05
Muted Red: no match (it’s the midpoint between SR04 and SR05 but those are wildly different colors)
Mahogany Red: SR01 (Coscraft is a smidge lighter and a tiny bit cooler)
Magenta: absolutely no match whatsoever.
Dark Auburn: SR03 (Coscraft is more saturated)
Overall, Classe Sara tends to be warmer than Coscraft, and Coscraft tends to be more saturated. Sara in particular and Classe as a whole is a good bet for you in general if you find most wigs to be overly saturated for your skin tone!

TEA ORDER TEA ORDER TEA ORDER TEA ORDER TEA ORDER TEA ORDER TEA O-
Tumblr media
(I opened them all for a lil sniff so sorry the tops are kinda scuffed) Kinda hard to see the names so here's what I got: Gyruko, mountain yellow, sichuan sword tip, spiced plum, berry basket, apple harvest, autumn spice, white peach, iccha kariban and dragonwell!!
This ain't sponsored ofc but lil rant about my love for them
Brand is Happy Mug Coffee and while their speciality is coffee they have a pretty extensive tea collection. Their prices are great, their quality is great, their shipping time is amazing (pretty sure they always ship same day on week day) and if you want to dip your foot into japanese and/or chinese green teas, this is a great option. Samples are usually just a $1-3 dollars so you can try a lot at once.
Some personal fav recommendations
. Iccha Kariban - amazing sencha, great for every day drinking. Extremely affordable too, at only $7 for 4 oz (aka a lot of tea, like 50+ cups) At least from my experience, and I've tried a lot of senchas available in the US, you will not find a better quality here, let alone for this price point. I've bought it two other times and have no regrets. Gives you a lovely burst of energy without the jitters, great way to get you awake on a cold morning
. Jasmine Pearl - great option for ppl who love foral teas. Super fragrant, a bit sweet and absolutely amazing for getting your lazyass to wake up on cold mornings just so you can sniff the jasmine tea lol. $15 per 4oz, seems pricy but is actually quite cheap for jasmine pearls, for instance it goes for $26 on Harney and Sons for the same amount in loose tea and most the other ones at a similar price point are awful quality. Is worth every penny imo.
. Matcha - I usually use this for cooking cause the caffeine content is a bit much for my anxiety BUT they have two grades of matcha, one more culinary and one ceremonial. Not sure how these compare to other brands since I haven't tried many others but no complaints. Since matcha usually runs rlly expensive and the culinary grade is only $10 for 4 oz or $3 for 1oz, doesn't hurt to give it a try. If you've never tried making matcha chocolate ur rlly missing out~
Ginger - if you get sick stomachs a lot like I do, rejoice cause they have 4oz for $4. That'll last you a longgg time
Lemon Mint Ginger - Similar to the first one, this one is great for not only sick stomachs but also just when you're sick or feel kinda under the weather. It's super comforting, great with honey.
They also have decaf coffee, I'm not much of a coffee drinker but I tried one of their decafs and quite liked it! If you don't need decaf like I do they ofc have many many caffeinated ones to choose from. From what I hear their Rainy Day blend is rlly good.
And honestly when what I've seen they just seem like sweet people who deserve all the support they get. If I ever get to the point where I can have black tea again I'm ordering samples of like their entire catalog, I just adore them.

One thing that continually bothers me: how dependent on chocolate most ice cream parlors and novelties are in the United States.
Or at least in my area of the US, I'm not an expert on this stuff.
I was complaining about this over the weekend, about how chocolate is great and I like it but I don't need or want it in all the things, and how very much I'd love an ice cream parlor that focuses on fresh fruits and seasonal flavors.
And so I came up with an idea for my own ice cream parlor, probably with a fairy or unicorn theme? Maybe enchanted forest? And then I spent days coming up with ice cream flavors and sundaes for my parlor (and also talking about cannibalism, particularly medical cannibalism, but that's another story).
I figure there'd be a set of always available flavors. Like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry are required. Maybe matcha? Something coffee based, probably. And all of the always available flavors would also be available in dairy-free and nut-free options. And I've heard how hard it is to find gluten-free chocolate ice cream, so definitely gluten-free options, too.
But the real stars here are the sundaes. There'd be the regularly available flavors and seasonal flavors of ice cream along with a variety of basic and seasonal fruits and toppings. You could build your own, or we'd have a selection of menu offerings. Everything would be topped with whipped cream, of course, except when it's got something like marshmallow fluff instead.
We'd have to have a whole variety of splits. Like, what am I even doing having a fruit-focused ice cream parlor without banana splits?
Including a banana split with dulce de leche ice cream, salted almonds, and hot fudge (because chocolate is still allowed, it just won't be in or on everything).
Or a peach split with roasted peaches, cinnamon ice cream, toasted oat crumble with walnuts or pecans, and brown sugar syrup.
Or a mango split with cardamom ice cream, salted cashews, and browned butter rum sauce.
An apple split with cinnamon roasted apples, vanilla ice cream, almonds, toffee bits, and caramel or butterscotch syrup.
Since it's fairy or enchanted forest themed, I'd want to include floral and herbal flavors, too.
Like for summer, I'd need vanilla lime ice cream with fresh watermelon with mint and lime juice and house-made strawberry syrup.
A warm sugar cookie topped with lemon lavender ice cream and fresh blueberry syrup.
Hibiscus ice cream with strawberry swirl.
Earl Grey ice cream with blackberries and chocolate lavender syrup (maybe with pound cake or a sugar cookie?)
For spring into summer, we could have fresh raspberries and mangoes with matcha ice cream and strawberry syrup.
For early autumn, we could have a peanut butter blondie with honey ice cream, fresh grapes, and peanut butter sauce.
From Halloween to Thanksgiving, we could have pumpkin ice cream with cranberry syrup, toasted pecans, and marshmallow fluff .
For deep winter, something with a clever name referencing Persephone with smoked vanilla ice cream with a clementine curd swirl, pomegranate syrup and fresh arils, and salted pistachios.
And for the people who really want a lot of chocolate, a chili pepper brownie with dark chocolate cinnamon ice cream with cocoa nibs topped with espresso hot fudge and chocolate shavings.
Those are my ideas from the last week (no name for this imaginary place, of course, because I'm terrible at naming things). I still need more ideas that include raspberries, blackberries, apricots, pineapples, and...so many other fruits. Pears. Plums.
I might have to make some of these sundaes for myself sometime.

Chakras: How To Unblock Them
Unblocking your chakras can be overwhelming at first, especially when you are just learning. Don’t worry, it’s actually pretty simple. Here are a few different ways that you can open/balance your chakras.
Tapping: The practice of tapping, or EFT, works by using your fingertips to tap on certain meridian points throughout your body. The motion of tapping and repeating affirmations can help to let go of certain emotions that may be blocking your chakras.
Chakra meditation: Chakra meditation can be a powerful technique for you to employ at home. It involves bringing attention to yourself and focusing on your awareness.
Yoga: When a chakra is blocked, movement can be beneficial to releasing it. Yoga is a fantastic way to do this as it encourages the flow of energy back into your body.
Nutrition: Including certain foods in your diet can help you to clear your energy system. Each chakra correlates with certain foods so introducing these into your daily meals can really go a long way to rebalancing your system.
Go out into nature: This is one of the easiest ways to unblock your chakras. Spending time outdoors, walking barefoot in the grass, is a wonderful way to reconnect with nature and absorb its healing energy – keeping you grounded and at peace.
Take deep breaths: Taking deep breaths with intention is very effective for restoring your chakras to their natural and harmonious state. As you inhale, direct your energy to the chakra. As you exhale, allow awareness to relax into it.
ROOT CHAKRA
Yoga poses: Tree, Mountain, or Warrior poses
Meditate: invision the colour red, hold hematite near your pelvis, or tap your pelvis.
Foods to eat: Red apples, tomatoes, beets, pomegranates, strawberries, raspberries, sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, turnips, garlic, parsnips, onions, rutabaga, ginger, turmeric, eggs, beans, nuts, lean meats, paprika, cayenne, horseradish.
Affirmations: “I am safe.“I am grounded.” “I am financially secure.” “I am taken care of.” “I am always provided for.”
SACRAL CHAKRA
Yoga poses: bridge pose, pigeon pose, lizard pose
Meditate: invision the colour orange, hold Tiger’s eye to your belly button, or tap your belly button area.
Foods to eat: Carrots, mango, oranges, orange peppers, peaches, apricots, sweet potatoes, salmon, flax, almonds, walnuts, sesame, coconut, cinnamon.
Affirmations: “I am creative.” “It’s safe to express my sexuality.” “I am comfortable in my body.” “I am in touch with my feelings.” “It is my right to be joyful and find pleasure.”
SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA
Yoga poses: boat or triangle pose

The Taste of Living
Yes, hello. So have you heard of that new game Cybird dropped about vampires? Yes? Good, because I am not done with my Synesthesia AU just yet, and I like wringing my brain for every single word I can use to replace the word ‘bitter.’ Think of this as me celebrating IkeVamp ENG release. I hope everyone has fun with the game~!  If you wanna read more of my stuff, then check here.
Tumblr media
The impulse to run her fingers over every surface she could was stronger in her than most, but when every bit of pressure and friction against her skin sparked bursts of flavor across her tongue, she couldn’t keep herself from reaching out for the newest thing that caught her eye.
Granted, not everything she got her hands on left a good impression, yet the thrill of discovering how something unfamiliar would tickle her taste buds made it nigh impossible to keep her hands to herself. She had, however, come into contact with something that disappointed her, and it was people, of all things. They were always either roasted peanuts or sweetened milk or some combination between the two, but they were never anything more. So when someone, somehow, didn’t figure into that range-
That day at the Louvre, that one touch - that was all it took to draw her in.
His eyes might have been glistening honey, and his voice might have been molten chocolate, but neither of those could compare to his touch. While everyone else fell somewhere between peanuts and milk, the Count of St. Germain was fine wine and rich mascarpone - sharp, indulgent, intoxicating.
Had it been a brief encounter, she would have brushed it off, would have chalked it up to her mind playing tricks on her, but… The then-stranger had hovered and lingered, and with his fingers gently tracing the edges of her ear, there was no mistaking the tingle of alcohol on her tongue that left her craving for more.
From there, she had ended up stumbling into a different time, a different world, and although every person she touched still tasted of peanuts or milk, she had come to know that past all the smoked paprika of leather and the mellow cream of cotton, the cherry sweetness of satin and the fairy floss tickle of silk - for whatever reason - the residents of the Mansion were a different story.
With his hand reaching out for hers from the very beginning, the taste that spread throughout her mouth when she had grabbed Napoleon’s hand for the very first time hardly matched his commanding presence. She expected strong liquors or bitter herbs, sharp cheeses or intense spices, something that would match the powerful figure history had made him to be, but instead... what lingered on her tongue was buttery macadamia and vanilla chiffon with a sprinkling of nutmeg.
His impressive reputation demanded respect, but the delicate taste he left in her mouth hinted at something more comfortable, modest, simple, and for quite some time, it had left her perplexed. However, with each subtle smile she caught sitting on his lips, with each gentle offer of his hand to her, she found herself unable to resist stretching out a hand of her own and welcoming the pleasant flavors that accompanied his touch.
It had been difficult to distinguish Leonardo’s taste behind all the layers of delectable fabric he draped himself in, and all the stacks of rosemary that were the books he surrounded himself with - in the library, in his room, in just about any place he felt comfortable. But when her fingers finally brushed against his as they both reached for a fallen textbook-
Leonardo was whiskey flames and roasted walnut bits, with dark chocolate chips melting smooth along her tongue. Warm and decadent, and just the right amount of sweetness that she would never get tired off.
Mozart wasn't one for physical contact, and while he avoided her touch, her mind couldn’t help but wonder. Maybe he was white chocolate and black currant, with just a splash of scotch - just like the keys and woodwork of his piano. Or maybe he was like the cherries and cream, wrapped in cotton candy, that made his clothes.
Her imagination worked to discern what kind of flavours a person like him would have, only to be surprised when a sparkling lemonade fizzed on her tongue and an icy mint danced on her lips - all while he pulled her close to avoid an unceremonious fall. She was met by concern masked with a scowl and a snide remark, and she couldn't help but think to herself that he was a lot more refreshing than expected.
She shouldn't have been surprised to taste coffee when Arthur had poked her cheek, retaliation for having taken a peek at his unfinished manuscript - or so he said. His touch was not too different from a shot of dark caffeine in the morning, with barely enough sugar to make the bitterness tolerable.
His brand of coffee never failed to wake her spirit at any moment of the day, but once the initial shock passed, an intense and dizzying butterscotch would flood her mouth. She'd often find herself reaching for a glass of water to wash out the overwhelming saccharinity, but she found that letting go, just to take his bare hand in hers again, worked just as well.
Often, she wondered if Isaac would be annoyed, should he ever find out what she tasted every time they touched. Putting aside the complications of having to explain her crossed senses, a certain pair of authors had gone out of their way, proving time and time again, his disdain for a certain fruit, but there was no mistaking the familiar sweetness that tickled her senses.
Apples, with a generous dusting of cinnamon sugar, and a splash of bourbon, dousing everything in an unexpected heat. His touch, as clumsy and hesitant and timid as they often were, brought about a sense of warm nostalgia that never failed to make her smile. A look of flushed confusion would settle on his features whenever he caught her grinning, and knowing the secret that she kept behind sealed lips, she could only smile wider.
While it had come as a surprise when she realized that the residents of the mansion weren’t the same peanuts and milk she had long grown tired of, finding out just how different the van Gogh siblings were came as a similar shock - both in terms of personality and taste.
When she had anticipated marshmallows, and vanilla, and all the innocent delights she could enjoy with childish glee, Vincent was toasted almonds and bittersweet marmalade. When she had anticipated espresso and absinthe and all the treats she could only barely stomach, Theo was meringue cookies and caramel peaches.
Vincent’s gentle nature was a welcome change of pace in a mansion filled with peculiar personalities, but whenever his skin met hers, it was no less of an experience than the others. It was citrus sparks and almond smoke with him, overwhelming her palate with a tingling mix of sweet, sour, bitter and salt. Whether it was the accidental brush of fingers or the occasional tug on her wrist, the slightest touch brought a tangy brightness that always cut through anything and everything unsavory - taste, sight, sound and all.
On the other hand- From light to rich to tart, Theo was layer upon layer of utterly delightful  sugary goodness. His words could be bitter and burnt, and his gaze could be cold and sharp, but he had never held her in any way that would harm her. As rough and as callous and as blunt as he could be, the flavors that bloomed in her mouth each time he pulled her to his side by the hand was just innocent saccharine bliss.
Both time and space had separated her from the life she used to know, but still, she found a piece of home in the strange world she found herself in. A gentle swipe of Dazai’s finger against her cheek brought back the familiar taste of daifuku and matcha, tugging on her heartstrings and pulling out fond memories from the fog of her mind.
It reminded her of bright spring mornings under cherry blossoms in full bloom, and of warm summer evenings amidst the festival lights and music. It reminded her of crisp autumn afternoons outside as a rain of fiery leaves fell around her, and of calm winter nights inside as a year ended and another year began. That first time he touched her, she realized that those halcyon days may have passed, but never truly gone.
Jean wasn’t one to seek the company of others - much like a certain good friend of his - and it was almost as if he purposefully made himself scarce around her for one reason or the other. Nonetheless, under the same roof, it was inevitable for their paths to cross over and over again… just as it was inevitable for someone to fall ill after a reckless run through an unforgiving storm.
As seldom as it was, vampires did get sick, and he had no choice but to yield to her care and attention once he had succumbed to fever. She had paused when she pressed the back of her hand to his forehead, experiencing flavors she hadn’t expected - the subtle prickle of black pepper, the fresh tang of plum and the gentle sweep of thyme. Her hand had lingered against his skin far longer than necessary, and when she finally regained the sense to let the man rest, she could only hope that one day, under more favorable conditions, he would let her stay by his side once more.
When she had first arrived at the mansion, she assumed she had already met all the vampires she could possibly meet in a lifetime, only to be proven wrong when she was introduced to the Bard of Avon himself - William Shakespeare. From the way he effortlessly weaved words together into poetry, to the way he disarmed her with just one look, it was just one thing after the other with him. Oh, but it was his touch, his touch - and the taste that flooded her mouth - was what overwhelmed her.
He was sage, and basil, and star anise. Bitter, and sweet, and strange. Disconcerting, and intriguing, and soothing. His touch was gentle, and yet firm, and she wasn't quite sure whether or not to let go, wasn't quite sure which of his mismatched eyes she should dare look into, wasn't quite sure what to make of the man that stood before her, equally flustered and afraid of what she might find.
Although she knew the residents of the mansion were peculiar, she had always thought that Sebastian was ordinary. As a fellow human from the same era as her, she had assumed that he was the same as her, the same as the humans who walked the streets of 19th Century France, the same as the humans who walked the streets of 21st Century France- the same peanuts and milk she had come to dread. But he wasn't.
A sudden flick on her forehead for a mistake she had made, and the taste of Earl Grey and Key lime seeped all throughout her mouth. It had caught her by surprise, and she had reacted far more intensely than Sebastian had expected, causing him to worry and gently press his bare fingers against her forehead to soothe the irritated skin, but that only made the flavors that settled on her tongue all the more undeniable, all the more enjoyable.
Maybe it was because they were brought together by the Count. Maybe it was because they found themselves in a strange point in the universe. Maybe it was because they chose to live their life anew.
Whatever the reason, she hardly cared. Her days had long gone gray and dreary, but with the people she had come to know after stepping through that door in the Louvre, as unconventional as they were, her days had once again become brilliant and beautiful and fun.
After so long, she once again could taste what it means to be alive.

The Ultimate Guide to Fruity, Milky, and Other Exciting Specialty Drinks
Tumblr media
What to get in the drinks aisle of an international grocery store? Consider these.
I’ve always found joy in the little things in life — the smell of a new book, blank stationery, and a small soft drink carton waiting for me in the fridge. I never outgrew these joys, and I invested in my soft drink passion especially. I know, I know, there is a common trope about millennials who infantilize themselves because society won’t let them buy houses and save money, and I agree! But the quest for gourmet soda is particularly exciting. The reward? A salve at the end of the day.
As my journey in life takes me to more and more international grocery stores, I’ve ventured farther into the beverage aisles, and when the cool air of the fridge hits my face, I edge closer to the fluorescent light and reach toward the cold carton, bottle, or can of a new or familiar joy. Sure, you can always get something alcoholic, but for those of us who don’t want to exacerbate our GERD (hello, 30s), are addicted to sugar, or don’t want to spend more than $5, there is the wonderful world of speciality soft drinks. First, some general tips:
Tumblr media
1) Find an international grocery store or immigrant-owned bodega
Chances are you won’t find specialty sodas and juices at Target or Walmart unless they’re manufactured by an American brand. Look up Japanese, Korean, South Asian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Chinese grocery stores (or any other kind!) in your area. While you’re there, pick up some pantry staples and make sure you’re respectful of the other shoppers. If you live by an immigrant-owned bodega, take a closer look at their shelves.
2) Don’t be a coward
Just because you can’t read the language on the packaging of a drink, and just because you’ve never had it before, doesn’t mean it’s a mystery of the vast unknown. Be brave! You could end up discovering your holy grail drink! And if you hate it, that’s also okay. It’s not going to cost you much to find out. If you’re really curious, though, there’s sometimes an import sticker that states what it is in English.
3) Look for the beverages in the fridge and on the shelves
There are instances when those working the stores haven’t had the time to fill up the fridge. Be mindful of stacked cartons or bottles around the store, where potential new favorites could be hiding out. Other kinds of drinks will be placed not in the fridges but on dry shelves in the interior of the store.
4) Once you find a favorite, take a picture of the packaging
Be sure to take a picture of something you really liked for future visits and file it into a folder on your phone — it’ll help you repurchase your favorites and also prevent any mix-ups between similarly shaped or designed bottles.
The ones to know:
Here are very few of my personal favorites, split into the categories of “fruity” and “milky.” Fruity drinks are evergreen, but especially appropriate for the times when you want the feeling of summer. Milky drinks are a little more substantial, better suited for the days when you’re craving something closer to a dessert.
Fruity
Suntory honey lemon
My holy grail of fruity drinks. I have only had the luck of having this once in my life, and I have been searching for it ever since. Achieving the perfect balance of sweet and sour, it feels familiar (because it’s honey and lemon) but also completely new because it doesn’t remind you of that familiar cold/flu combo. Like all excellent soft drinks, it has a sophistication from the first to the last sip.
Taisun winter melon drink
Winter melon (aka white gourd) is popular in Taiwan and has got to be the best double agent of all time. In its raw form, it tastes pretty neutral, which makes it well-suited as a savory vegetable dish. Once you add sugar to its juices, though, it transforms, giving off burnt caramel notes that makes it the most dessert-like fruit drink maybe ever. It’s in my top five of all time. I have consumed plenty of Taisun cans, and I hereby encourage everyone to try my regular boba order (winter melon tea with salty foam) if it’s your first time.
Tumblr media
Suntory Gokuri grapefruit
Again with another heavyweight, Suntory offers us Gokuri. As well as having the sexiest packaging (aluminum tinned bottles, generous girth, amazing colors and design), it also is the best citrus soda. Its grapefruit and cassis an orange flavors are clear winners, and the peach flavor is also good (though I usually prefer a non-carbonated peach).
Rubicon
Sing it with me now: lychee, mango, guava, passionfruit. If my childhood were a table, these four would be its legs. Though these drinks are common in the U.K., they’re a little harder to come by in NYC, where I’m located now. Somewhere in between juice and lassi, Rubicon’s drinks are sweet, thick in consistency, and truly a delight to all those who have an affinity for — yes — lychee, mango, guava, and passionfruit. Get them anywhere you can, most likely at a South Asian grocery store, and for the love of god, don’t buy the sparkling versions.
San Pellegrino prickly pear and orange
The blood orange flavor of these foil-wrapped cans gets a lot of airtime with soft drink enthusiasts, but o-ho! Let me tell you about the rare and best flavor of San Pellegrino. Prickly pear, also known as nopal, is a cactus that can be used in savory cooking but also eaten as a fruit. This flavor sets itself apart from other San Pellegrino varieties in that it doesn’t taste as artificial, which is hard to achieve with carbonated sodas.
Tumblr media
Bruce Cost jasmine green tea ginger ale
I never really understood the love for ginger ale until I tried Bruce Cost’s. With other ginger ales, the ginger is too strong, or the sugar too sweet to counteract the ginger, but the beauty of Bruce Cost’s ginger ale is that it’s infused with flavors that you wouldn’t think would work — and yet they do. Jasmine green tea is amazing all by itself, but with the ginger ale flavor, it’s a perfect union.
Ikea elderflower drink/Belvoir elderflower presse or cordial
Elderflower is popular around northwestern and central Europe, and has a distinctly elegant taste that is a heavy-hitter by itself and with cocktails. If your store has a specialty shelf dedicated to the friends across the pond, you may have some luck in finding Belvoir, an elderflower cordial popular with us Brits. If not, perhaps you can scoop a carton or bottle of “Dryk Flader” next time you’re at Ikea trying to satisfy your meatball craving.
Suanmeitang (Chinese sour plum juice)
If, like me, your only experience of plum juice is to fix some… uh… bowel issues, then I understand the hesitation with trying suanmeitang. But this is an all-around winner: a sweet, sour, and very slightly salty plum juice, in an adorable bottle, that, yes, helps with digestion — because bowel movement is important! Grow up! You can likely find suanmeitang at most Chinese grocery stores.
Milky
Vitasoy black sesame
If you’ve ever been to HMart or an East Asian supermarket, you might have seen these cartons in a variety of colors to denote different flavors. But nothing reigns more supreme than the black sesame flavor: A milky backdrop complements the nuttiness of the black sesame and makes for a great drinkable dessert.
Marusan Hojicha milk tea
Milk tea is tea leaves steeped in milk in various combinations. You have oolong, darjeeling, and other forms (which I encourage you to try if you haven’t), but hojicha is my personal favorite. Hojicha is the more elegant sister of matcha: Whereas matcha leans more fresh and grassy, hojicha is the roasted version, and provides a deeper and earthier flavor. I recommend finding hojicha leaves and having them for hot tea (or finding sachets for a hojicha instant latte), but if you want a soothing cold version, hojicha milk tea in the carton is unbeatable. Marusan’s uses soy milk, which helps with any lactose intolerance.
Yakult probiotic drink
A legend, an icon. Nothing can replace the tangy sweetness of this watery liquid. She mainstreamed and we still love her. Does she actually help with good gut bacteria? Do we care either way?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
T.Grand Assam milk tea
Assam tea is produced in Assam, India, and it’s a pretty singular black tea flavor. It tastes a little bit like fragrant burnt sugar or earthy caramel. Adding milk nestles that flavor into your palate and imparts an astounding flavor somewhere between creamy and fruity, floral and nutty. It has crisp notes, much like oolong, but the taste itself is rounded out. I prefer T.Grand’s version, partly because of its “My Way My Life My Milk Tea” caption on the cartons (damn straight!), but UCC has Assam milk tea too.
Bikkle yogurt drink
For those who need a little more of Yakult, and the tiny bottles simply don’t hit, we have Bikkle’s yogurt drink. Much like Calpis, it’s a yogurt drink that tastes less like lactose and more like a kind of sugar that does something to the pleasure center of the brain. It has a better taste and consistency than Calpis, and does not give me a tummy ache, so it’s a win all-around.
