8/16/2024, Boston, Massachusetts: I ended my voyage in the only way fitting, by getting a traditional handpoked tattoo from artist, boat builder, and tattooist Owen Payette McGarry, a master of his craft and a fount of knowledge of New England maritime folk traditions.

In addition to the 19th century Nantucket whaler I chose from his flash book, the other tattoos you can see in this photo are by Facundo "Faka" Cejas (the Peglar Papers eye), Laceyrea Barrett (the fish with legs), and Chelsea Rhea (the tailfin of a huge mermaid that takes up the other side of my arm).

The first reference to the sea serpent may be the belief of Native Americans, predating western settlement of the area, that an evil spirit dwelled in the lake. The first documented sighting by western settlers occurred in 1920 when workers cutting ties at the upper end of the lake thought they saw a log in the lake. The “log” began to move.

Sharlie (Slimy Slim, The Twilight Dragon of Payette Lake) is the name given to a reptile-like sea serpent much like the Loch Ness Monster that is believed by some to live in the deep alpine waters of Payette Lake near McCall, Idaho. The first reference to the sea serpent may be the belief of Native Americans, predating western settlement of the area, that an evil spirit dwelled in the lake. The first documented sighting by western settlers occurred in 1920 when workers cutting ties at the upper end of the lake thought they saw a log in the lake. The “log” began to move.

In August 1944 the serpent was reportedly seen by several groups of people who described it as 30 to 35 feet in length, with a dinosaur-type head and pronounced jaws, humps like a camel, and a shell-like skin.

In September 1946, the serpent was reportedly sighted by a group of twenty people. Dr. G.A. Taylor of Nampa, Idaho explained that “it appeared to be between 30 and 40 feet long and seemed to keep diving into the water. It left a wake about like a small motor boat would make. In 1954 A. Boone McCallum, Editor of The Star News held a contest to name the serpent of Payette Lake. The winning name, “Sharlie”, was submitted by Le Isle Hennefer Tury of Springfield, Virginia. In her letter to Mr. McCallum she said, “Why don’t you call the thing Sharlie? You know – ‘Vas you der, Sharlie?” This was a reference to the popular catch phrase often spoken by Jack Pearl during his old-time radio show.

Sharlie was reportedly sighted dozens of times between 1956 and the last documented sighting in 2002.

Bigfoot in Idaho

In Idaho's unforgiving wilderness, where dense forests stretch for miles and mountains stand like old sentinels, Bigfoot remains a cultural phenomenon and a mystery. Bigfoot, known as Sasquatch, the Wild Man, or simply the beast, is a legendary creature of Idaho's wild backwoods. Bigfoot, a fable or a real, elusive animal hidden from scientific examination, has captivated locals, researchers, and explorers, turning Idaho's woodlands into a stage for one of the modern era's greatest mysteries. Idaho's vast, remote environments are ideal for unknown creature stories. In principle, Bigfoot might live in these distant, densely forested areas. Sightings in Idaho generally occur in remote locations where rivers cut deep valleys and humans are scarce. The 1960s Payette National Forest Bigfoot sighting by loggers of a huge, man-like creature watching them from the treeline is one of Idaho's most renowned myths. They described it as over seven feet tall, dark-haired, and smelling musky long after it vanished into the woods. The encounter left the guys disturbed, and while critics dismissed their narrative as a hoax or a bear misidentification, the loggers claimed they saw something else. Many reports have featured a fleeting sight, a loud, spooky sound, or large footprints, sometimes up to 18 inches long. Not only are Bigfoot sightings in Idaho exciting, but the monster also suggests that there are still secrets in the earth, hiding in areas humans cannot access. Idaho has many unexplored caves and ravines. Many believe Bigfoot may live in such an environment. According to believers, if the gigantic squid and okapi could go undetected for centuries, a large, intelligent monkey might too, especially in Idaho's vast and inaccessible forests. Lack of evidence is a big impediment to the Bigfoot mythology, say skeptics. Despite decades of sightings, no one has proven the creature exists. Despite the ability to manufacture footprints and ignore grainy photos and videos, the absence of tangible remains such as bones, fur, or scat casts doubt on a reproducing population of giant primates remaining undetected for such a long period. Wildlife biologists say Bigfoot's size would require a lot of food and leave more evident traces of its presence, making its survival unlikely. One skeptic for every believer in Bigfoot as a real, undiscovered species believes it is a cultural myth, a modern version of the wild men and forest spirits of folklore worldwide. Idahoans remain fascinated with Bigfoot. It is now a symbol of the unknown and humanity's deep relationship to nature and its mysteries, not just a question of existence. The search for Bigfoot has sent many researchers and enthusiasts into Idaho's woods with cameras, audio recorders, and plaster for footprints. Locals hold Bigfoot festivals, sell Sasquatch merchandise, and tell stories around campfires. Idaho's mythical beast is part of its identity. Some seek Bigfoot for the experience rather than the evidence. Hiking, listening for faraway sounds, and searching the forest for movement taps into something primitive. It reminds people of the world's immensity and the possibilities of unexplained phenomena. The search for Bigfoot, a way to reconnect with the wild and unknown, is more important than its authenticity. The Idaho Bigfoot mythology flourishes where fact and fiction merge.
