extremely pissed off because the union has been negotiating a contract with my place of employment for two years, and just as they’ve finished it and negotiated raised wages for everyone, work has announced that as soon as we settle on the contract they’re eliminated waived breaks (we forego breaks in favor of getting paid for half an hour). Our salary increases are NOT significant and doing this means we’ll essentially lose money or make about the same as we had been before they eliminated waived breaks.

All this is doing is driving home that if we didn’t have the union they’d screw us over even more, and isn’t even a subtle attempt to stop them from having to pay us more.

I lost count of how many people I've met in the shop who whine about the ~Good Ol Boys~, but after a couple questions it becomes clear they're just made they weren't getting special favors for paying dues. There are also the people who insist there's no communication about anything, but they refuse to read the in plant newsletter or the monthly union paper, they don't look at the union bulletin boards at every plant entrance, they don't use our chairman's phone app for questions and communication, they don't follow any of the union's social media pages, and they will not attend any union meetings. At that point like what the fuck do you want? Should your committee man come find you personally, hold your hand and tell you everything going on?

Now my local is currently stuck in the world's stupidest turf war, since our local president burned all her bridges with the rest of the elected body in the union, went on a warpath of accusations of financial corruption which ended up being proven false repeatedly, and now is stuck nearly alone at meetings because her supporters are allergic to union meetings.

Because of this petty bullshit, union meetings are like being stuck in a room full of stray cats looking for the exit.

I'm pitiful and in more ways than just this one 😫 I actually have some (small) problems with the local 58, but most of them are just "never expanded outside Toronto proper", which is sort of I think how most unions are these days. like, my little corner of the industry is ripe for it lemme fucking tell you. anyway, iatse is more of a labour pool then like IBEW, and the labour it pools is very much downtown centric, so without making a significant move it wouldn't really be practical for me I'm afraid 😔 driving all over creation and shit. but the like maybe one or two union-ish workplaces in my industry (rather than being labour pool) are like, my dream, obviously lol. Or just getting a govt job doing what I do
