Today the common catsear, flatweed or false dandelion (Hypochaeris radicata), not pink but yellow it appears. Mine grows at a roundabout in Hamburg Hamm, quasi in the middle of the pavement! The whole northern hemisphere is its home, originally coming from Europe, it has spread almost worldwide, probably in the luggage of humans. Wikipedia says it is "a neophyte in southern Africa, on Madagascar, Mauritius and the Azores, in India, Japan, Taiwan and Yunnan, in North and South America, in Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii". So no beer in Hawaii but the piglet weed ;) It's a weird thing that made it around the world, without feet or wings. Come well into the evening and even better through the night and into the morning! . . . . . . #ferkelkraut #hypochaerisradicata #catsear #catsears #flatweed #falsedandelion #korbblütler #wildkräuterliebe #botanik #gewoonbiggenkruid #costolinagiuncolina #porcelleenracinée #natureprevails #cityplants #pavementplants #plantsinthecity #kleingarten #schrebergarten #gartenglück #gartenfreude #kleingartenliebe #hammerblumen #plantnet #plantnetapp #blumenfoto #blumenfotos #blümen #blumenfotografie #blomster #blomfotografering (hier: Hamburg-Horn) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAk5Pl_gXHe/?igshid=1ny9qegr30cqc

lunchtime botany: ivy leaved toadflax (Cymbalaria muralis) is one of my favourite common urban plants. You'll find them all over the place on walls and in pavement cracks. Look out for neat little ivy-shaped leaves and purple snapdragon flowers. My favourite fact about these plants is how they spread so effectively: the flower heads face the light like most flowers when in bloom, but specifically tries to get away from light when seeds develop, burrowing into wall cracks and crevices and leaving seeds there. It's thought they were introduced to the UK this way, in Italian marble statues. Apparently their leaves are also edible but I'd avoid the ones at dog pee height on street corners... #botany #pavementplants #wildflowers #plants #flowers #Edinburgh #Scotland #naturalhistory (at Edinburgh, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvtolLEA0Sk/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xltz1hpf2hsu

Highlights from the pavement plants challenge
Thank you all so much for taking part in this week’s challenge #pavementplants. Here are some of your highlights.
One of my favourite #pavementplants which always brighten up the concrete and tarmac in March – just when you need it most – these beautiful little Whitlow grass found in #Grantham this week #wildflowerhour
The best of this week’s #pavementplants: Daisies colonising the gaps in the tarmac at Plumpton village hall. Almost enough for a daisy chain! #wildflowerhour
Sweet violets by a roadside in Lewes, Sussex #pavementplants #wildflowerhour
Cochlearia danica (Danish Scurvygrass) is a common street weed in many of the towns in Pembrokeshire this year. @BSBIbotany

#LunchtimeBotany: Common/grey field speedwell (Veronica persica, possibly polita but I think we're a bit far north?). Excited to see my first speedwells in flower this year, on the corner of some wasteland. I brought a tiny sprig home to see the flower open fully. Apparently travelers used to sew speedwells into their coats as a good luck travel charm, hence the name. Lots more species of speedwell will be appearing in the coming weeks/months. In Edinburgh look out for their distinctive tiny blue flowers all along the Meadows' edge (as well as everywhere else, basically). #botany #flowers #pavementplants #urbanflowers #wildflowers #naturalhistory #Edinburgh #Scotland (at Edinburgh, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvwExReAfqS/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1vcr08tn2y4x3

Today the mouse-ear hawkweed (Pilosella officinarum), it is a rosette plant, the leaves that grow around the stem from which the flower then grows, grows rosette-like around the stem. It has a cool special feature, it can roll up its leaves in dry conditions and the silvery, brightly smooth underside of the leaves comes up and reflects a lot of light, which reduces heat. So it could be that this plant is well adapted to the climate change here in the north. The hawkweed is found throughout Europe, West Asia and West Siberia. In the rest of the world it is most likely the neophyte. It can also be used as a diuretic. Come well into the evening and even better through the night and into the morning! . . . . . #ястребиночкаобыкновенная #ястребиночка #jastrzębieckosmaczek #sparvierepelosetto #pilosellaofficinarum #hårethøgeurt #hawkweed #hieraciumpilosella #pilosellaofficinarum #naturephotography #photographyislifee #natureprevails #cityplants #pavementplants #plantsinthecity #kleingarten #schrebergarten #gartenglück #gartenfreude #kleingartenliebe #hammerblumen #plantnet #plantnetapp #blumenfoto #blumenfotos #blümen #blumenfotografie #blomster #blomfotografering (hier: Hamburg-Horn) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAs26wMsdVG/?igshid=1j3i8i372d25d

Today the ox-eye daisy or also as dog daisy. I am not so sure. I found it in front of Genno's door. I have been there a few times for dinner - delicious! Today the hedge was cut by themselves, so the guys from Genno´s. The daisies were right next to the street, the bike track to be exact, which Hamburg is now putting on the street itself, whenever possible. So I stopped and took a quick snapshot. The daisies are spread all over Europe and where else, I don't know. Maybe they are also found in Asia or in America. Come well into the evening and even better through the night and into the morning! . . . . . #margerite #margeriten #leucanthemumvulgare #gewonemargriet #marguerite #lamarguerite #dogdaisy #oxeyedaisy #korbblütengewächse #flowerstagram #naturephotography #photographyislifee #natureprevails #cityplants #pavementplants #plantsinthecity #kleingarten #schrebergarten #gartenglück #gartenfreude #kleingartenliebe #hammerblumen #plantnet #plantnetapp #blumenfoto #blumenfotos #blümen #blumenfotografie #blomster #blomfotografering (hier: Genno's) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAqIG1CM5Qv/?igshid=18wzf75x9to6c

What a massive #wildflowerhour we had tonight! Thank you to everyone who took part. It’s getting harder and harder to pick just a handful of highlights, but here are some of the best photos from tonight on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Challenge: Pavement Plants
The theme for this weeks challenge is #pavementplants and you won’t need to do anymore than go for a walk along the roadside near your home or your workplace and see what is growing there.
It is amazing how many plants are able to eke out a living where they were never invited. Growing in seemingly inhospitable cracks and crevices, thriving where there is little soil, these tough little plants are often overlooked. Which is such a pity, as plants such as Procumbent Pearlwort have lovely tiny, pearly, green flowers and possess a unique beauty.
For this challenge we are asking you to have a really good long look to see what is growing in the pavement cracks! Photograph your finds and then post your planty pics on Twitter, Instagram or in our Facebook group using the hashtags #wildflowerhour and #pavementplants on Sunday 11th March between 8-9pm.
