40 Years in the making: 1984-2000-2024: My sister Susan. August, 1984. I was an intern at Pictorial in Indianapolis working for Carter Allen. He was generous to allow me to stay late at the studio and use their equipment so I photographed my sister, Susan, in various wardrobes all consisting of her clothing, either purchased or made by her. Using a Hasselblad 500cm camera, Balcar strobes and Chimera soft boxes I created this image on B&W 2&1/4 film. Printed on Ilford Galerie paper and finished in Selenium toning to bring out a slight cool blueish cast that I love so much. We re-created this once in May, 2000 when I had just purchased a Contax 645 film camera that I would later use a Kodak digital back on. Now, 40 years later in September, 2024: Same hat. My experience comes through as this was shot in her bedroom against a simple painted wall. This time I used my Canon R5 and three tiny Profoto A1 strobes with various light shaping tools to create a nearly identical lighting scheme to that grand studio shoot all those years ago.
Added are a few other images from our photoshoot. It doesn’t take much to get her to act, that’s for certain. 😘

Never Mess with the Mandalorian…or something like that
It has been a strange four weeks. No doubt about that.
Having evolved the business over the past decade, getting to know people, places, working out the sort of photography that pays the bills and keeps my creative braincell working overtime - the pandemic has seemingly blown a hole through everything.
I am not going to lie, It has been a shock to the system.
But this has also been a means to learning more about my business, my clients, my processes and more importantly what is actually important to me.
Let’s breakdown the key moments in the past four weeks that have fed into this learning curve.
Lesson One
The first key moment, was that my eleven-year-old son became ill. He showed most of the headline symptoms of the Corona Virus, the most worrying one for us was a 40c temperature. He did not, thankfully, experience serious breathing issues.
As you are caring for the person who is sick and trying to protect the other members of your family - you realise that everything else becomes secondary. It brings focus to your thinking.
The two weeks of lockdown, meant that I couldn’t do any agency news work and although that wasn’t the main concern at that point, if I don’t take photos…I won’t have any chance of getting paid.
The lesson learned was family does come first. Each and every time. Everything else, a distant second.
Lesson Two
Home-schooling an eleven-year-old and a six-year-old is tough.
Like many, many parents who are realising this, it takes a lot of effort to provide the sort of support that your kids need to continue learning and cope with social isolation from their friends and teachers.
This impacts on what I can expect to do in a day and my own work expectations. I cannot expect to get a call to cover a particular job, grab my cameras, jump into the car and drive somewhere.
The lesson learned is how dependent my work life is on others.
Lesson Three
Having pictures at an agency, or in a photo library is incredibly important - even if the revenue from them is dropping all the time.
I have continued to see sales of images through the agencies and direct.
Although it doesn’t provide a replacement income, it is nevertheless a very welcome source of money.
Photographers should have a diverse portfolio of income opportunities, in my case this includes eight primary sources: agency work, a network of clients, commissioned shoots, picture library sales, direct website sales, video work, associated graphic design work, and production of prints, books and online materials.
The lesson learned is that I need to develop my ‘octopus of income’ better.
Lesson Four
Murphy’s Law.
You know this one…paraphrasing - if something can go wrong, then it will!
Last thing you need when your monthly income has dropped to nothing, is a big expenditure cropping up - like the main computer used to process images developing a fault and needing replacing.
£5000 later…a new computer is on the way from Apple. Ouch!
The Lesson learned is, as a photographer, how much I am dependent on technology. I need to streamline what I use and build resilience into my working practices.
Lesson Five
Learning to deal with frustration, both your own and others.
The home is usually a hub for the beginning of the day, the end of the day and the weekends. Right now, it is a hub for everything…work, school and recreation.
The problem is that with the whole family using the same space, there is competition for everything and this causes frustration on so many levels.
The trick is to evolve the working space to fit the needs of everyone, to learn to work in a new way and to compromise. There is also a need to develop routine.
The lesson learned is to address the source of frustration and deal with it…don’t ignore it.
Lesson Six
A purely personal one here…I learned not to fight with the Mandalorian…nope…I started to watch the Mandalorian and learned not to fight with the mandoline in the kitchen!
The lesson learned is after one trip to A&E and seeing a lot of my own blood…is to pay attention to what I am doing!
Life, The Universe and Everything
So an interesting month under lockdown conditions, full of frustration, worry and learning.
I have looked at some of the excellent work being done by other photojournalists, my friends and peers, providing coverage of the pandemic with a mixture of awe and envy.
I have felt real frustration that due to having to comply with isolation due to illness, the necessity of home schooling two children, and latterly a self-inflicted injury has meant that I have been unable to do the thing I should be doing - out documenting the pandemic in the wider world.
Having said that, I have been taking advantage of my time in isolation to develop a pictorial record of being at home during the lockdown and I hope to show these off at some point in the near future, when this is all over.
Anyway…another blog post that is way too long…apologies! Here’s to another three weeks of trying not to damage myself further with household objects!
Keep safe, look after yourselves and I’d love to read what you are learning about your circumstances during this time.
