anyway for people unfamiliar with Eugene of Wurttemberg and the Romanov family drama. Sometime around 1801 Paul brought prince Eugene, his nephew, to St. Petersburg and since Paul’s relationship with Alexander soured at the time there were rumors of him planning on making Eugene his new heir. Needless to say, Alexander didn’t like him at all, but the guy remained blissfully unaware of this whole thing and like many people at the time, he had a crush on Alexander (which resulted in some hilarious passages from his memoirs)
an artistic rendition of his arrival at St. Petersburg btw:

“Catherine the great's son Paul was part of the reason why the Romanovs fell. I know there were some bigger factors (Nicholas being a bad tsar, the people growing fed up with the idea of monarchy, etc.) but think about it. if Paul hadn't barred women from inheriting the Russian throne, Alexandra wouldn't have been pressured to produce a male heir and the fate of the monarchy wouldn't rest entirely on Alexei's shoulders. if he had died, the new heir would be Olga. this is very incoherent and may be wrong just sharing what I think lol.” - Submitted by Anonymous

/some part of me thinks that before or at the moment of Paul's death, he remembered his father and wanted to see him at least once more, like it could be the only person in the world who could understand him at that moment
