Propaganda Under the Cut:
Dave:
hes literally just some guy <3
Paul:
Gets drunk, ship wrecks, the alcohol in his blood puts him in hibernation in the ice, instead of killing him. He's woken up 70 years later, but he doesnt know time has passed, and his family try to keep up the charade until his grandson-in-law cracks down and yells the whole truth at him because he cant stand it anymore.

A hilarious article about the bashing of the Momoro couple
Tumblr media
I came across a "historical" article that's too funny and takes itself way too seriously 😂. It's called Citizen Marie Françoise JosĂ©phine FOURNIER (Sophie Momoro), agent of the Public Safety Committee ( true tittle La Citoyenne MOMORO, Marie Françoise JosĂ©phine FOURNIER (1766-1808), Agent du ComitĂ© de Salut Public ?). Just the title already reeks of bad faith (though not as much as Historia's title Robespierre the Legalistic Psychopath XD).
Besides claiming that Antoine-François Momoro, from the beginning of the Revolution (1789), "ugly and brutal, made a name for himself by welcoming into his printing house all the manufacturers of libels and defamatory pamphlets" — the fact that he was ugly, I honestly don't care about. However, in 1789, he was actually quite cautious, to the point that he had an argument with Camille Desmoulins, who complained about Momoro in a letter to his father. So no, he only became more active after the king’s flight, and from there, he evolved from a cautious man into someone willing to die for his convictions by 1794.
Let’s move on to the next excerpt: "Quickly, he used his position to get some people removed from lists in exchange for a comfortable sum of assignats. He charged a high price for his signature and soon amassed a fortune of 80,000 pounds, despite previously being in debt." Then there's a bit about his wife, Marie-Françoise FOURNIER, supposedly an ex-marquise, said to be "quite ugly with a fishwife’s voice and horrible teeth" (Memoirs on the Prisons - 1823). She supposedly directed emigrants to her husband to make them pay, and the couple allegedly displayed scandalous luxury during a revolutionary time that advocated equality for all.
This is the best part of the year! At one point, I thought they were talking about the Tallien couple in Bordeaux, but no, it's the Momoro couple being discussed.
Now, here’s the inventory report from the commissioners who seized their property at Momoro’s mother’s house, which supposedly proves their luxurious lifestyle: “Today, 11 Germinal, Year II of the Republic, at eleven in the morning, we, Jean François Denisot, member of the General Council of the Besançon district, appointed by order of the same district to affix seals at the home of the mother of the named Momoro, who has just been executed in Paris, and with François-Joseph Bernard as our secretary, went to the home of citizen Forno, a war commissioner, where the said Momoro was a cook. We asked citizen Forno to show us the room of the said Momoro, to which she replied that she had died the previous night but was ready to show us the room she occupied." The total assets were: "an old armchair and a small mirror, 26 livres, 17 sols, 460 assignats, a crucifix, a gold ring... a small fir box, and a small bag filled with various papers." Seems trustworthy to me, but feel free to decide for yourself. In fact, the couple's only real wealth was their workshop and printing presses. I say “theirs” because in her husband's absence, Sophie managed the business, it seem that she acting as interim boss 😉 And honestly the revolutionary men would not have been as effective in my opinion without their wives,sisters,etc... Although they would have remained active (I think Condorcet would have been less effective without Sophie de Grouchy, the same for Roland without his wife Manon, Camille Desmoulins without Lucile Desmoulins would have been less effective in my opinion, the same for Momoro without Sophie or Jean Paul Marat without Simone Evrard and Albertine Marat, etc....)
Also, the claim about taking money to remove people from lists is a big red flag, considering their well-known political activities. Sophie wasn’t even an ex-marquise, though she came from a wealthy family of printers. The article contradicts itself by saying they got married during the Revolution when it’s well-known they married before it. As for Sophie’s so-called ugliness, it was described by people who were hostile to Momoro, making it highly questionable (like the unreliable informer Laboureau, who mocked her appearance after accusing her husband). Not to mention, she didn’t have lovers, contrary to what the article claims. It was only after she remarried Jacques Marie Botot and following his disgrace in the army after Bonaparte's coup that he became bitter against her and she ended up having a lover, who didn’t marry her, though he did recognize their daughter.
Some claim that Momoro forced his wife to play the role of the Goddess of Reason. However, knowing her character, she would not have hesitated to divorce him, as she did with her second husband (in Napoleonic times, when divorce was even more difficult). Signs suggest she shared her husband's ideas (she even mimicked his writing style when she wrote a petition to the Assembly for help). She also shared his views on the VendĂ©e according to a letter of Momoro and accompanied him on his mission there, making it more likely she agreed with or wanted to participate in the de-Christianization campaign. Additionally, the letters Momoro sent to his wife, while brief and not fiery love letters, showed care for her (I think he loved her but was one of those people who had trouble showing affection in public—more of a shy love).
The article's claim that Momoro manipulated the trial to his advantage is also false. He remained dignified but, when he wanted to write a defense, Ronsin reportedly told him not to bother since it was a political trial and they were all doomed anyway. In fact, it was Ronsin and Vincent who defended themselves vigorously, but ineffectively.
Finally, the article tries to argue that Sophie Momoro was a royalist and that’s why she was released after two months. Here’s the excerpt: “Later, at his trial, Fouquier-Tinville answered the President of the Tribunal, who asked why he acquitted citizen Momoro in May 1794: ‘Citizen Momoro, thanks to her connections at the Temple, informed royalists about the son of Capet,’ Fouquier-Tinville replied." Once again, there’s no proof for this claim. Moreover, the arrests and subsequent releases or, sadly, executions of revolutionaries' wives often seemed random ( except Charlotte Robespierre or her time of liberation which came quickly I am not surprised, do not take this for bashing of Charlotte Robespierre, I have already expressed myself on this subject), as shown in this post by @anotherhumaninthisworld on Tumblr https://www.tumblr.com/anotherhumaninthisworld/761989542352945152/do-you-happen-to-know-how-often-it-occurred-for?source=share
In any case, if the Momoro couple were truly royalist agents with hidden treasures, I propose we give them a posthumous Oscar for Best Actors. I’ll contact Hollywood immediately.
It’s a shame though—if the article really wanted to bash Momoro, they could’ve mentioned his terrible proposal by letter to burn forests in the VendĂ©e (knowing how serious it was), his dubious allies in Paris like Carrier, or how he proposed harsher measures on suspected counter-revolutionaries toward the end. See, I’m a good sport 😛, and I’m even offering suggestions on how to criticize ( or even bashing ) one of my favorite revolutionaries. After all, I do the same with other revolutionary figures, so it’s only fair that others get to do it with my favorite characters—but at least use credible sources, or else we risk spouting nonsense! XD
P.S: The article was written by Didier Duval as part of « the Cercle d’études historiques sur la question de Louis XVII » . There are other false things like the fact that Jacques Marie Botot had a career under Bonaparte when he was disgraced or other nonsense but I won't say more

Allow me to geek out on some maths for a moment..
Ages of the winners of the Olympics Ice Dance event from the past 2 decades:
2002: Anissina/Peizerat (FRA) 27/30
2006: Navka/Kostomarov (RUS) 31/29
2010: Virtue/Moir (CAN) 20/22
2014: Davis/White (USA) 27/26
2018: Virtue/Moir (CAN) 28/30
2022: Papadakis/Cizeron (FRA) 26/27
The ages of the top 6 (as of GPF 2023) + P/C as of Milano/Cortina 2026:
Papadakis/Cizeron (FRA): 30/31 (3rd olys)
Chock/Bates (USA): 33/37 (5th olys *E)
Guignard/Fabbri (ITA): 37/39 (4th olys)
Gilles/Poirier (CAN): 34/34 (4th olys *Paul)
Fear/Gibson (GBR): 27/32 (2nd olys)
Fournier Beaudry/Sorensen (CAN): 33/37 (2nd olys)
Lajoie/Lagha (CAN): 26/27 (2nd olys)
Of the above 7 teams, only one will be younger than VM were in 2018.
AND PEOPLE THOUGHT VM WERE “ANCIENT” when they won in 2018

In a world where VM return for the 2026 Olympics.. they would not be the oldest team competing..
Pre-VM, Ice Dance was an ‘older skaters’ sport.
VM made ice dance a ‘young sport’- they pushed the athleticism, skating skill, difficulty, artistry, versatility. Everyone was forced to skate to their standard. They retired at, what is now proven to be, a relatively young age. The ages of the *top* teams looking to the 2026 Olympics, the above teams are made up of holdovers from the VM era, and teams that have not and will never have the opportunity to achieve what VM did at- clearly now an anomaly of a young age, because of the holdover teams- If they do, it will be at the rate of the age cycle that has reappeared starting precisely at the retirement of Virtue/Moir.
VM was the outlier.
