The Royal Year (3/∞)
↬ The Anniversary of HRH James, Prince of Danforth's Birth
James Louis Michael George was born during a catastrophic blizzard on January 26, 1977. He was the long-awaited son and heir to King Louis V. After nine years of marriage between Louis and his wife, the birth of a son was a sign of stability—despite half the province being buried in snow. For this reason, James was the last royal child to be born at home rather than in a hospital. The snowstorm, which cut power throughout the city of Warwick, provided significant challenges to the birthing process. This was the first of several reformations to the monarchy that would take place throughout James's lifetime. Unlike his predecessors, James was educated at school rather than at home under the supervision of male relatives. He was likewise the first to attend a post-secondary institution. His upbringing at Woodbine Palace coincided with Sunderland's accelerating liberalization and decolonization. During his 1995 Investiture as Prince of Danforth, he became the first heir apparent to swear to respect and honour the distinct cultures of Sunderland's indigenous populations. He was also the first member of his family to acknowledge same-sex couples following Sunderland's 2003 legalization of gay marriage. As a young adult he became known for his fashion sense, intellect, and spontaneous public persona. James's relationship with his father has been heavily debated by royal experts and biographers. Some allege that Louis treated his eldest son as a whipping boy and scapegoat, and that towards the end of James's life, the two were at loggerheads due to conflicting social and political views. Others argued that while the two often disagreed, the relationship between King and heir was ultimately loving and far more efficient than Louis's relationship with his own father. Despite some documented periods of melancholy, James was generally charming and beloved by the people. His 1998 marriage to Lady Tatiana Farnsworth increased his public image to that of a global brand. His sudden death in 2017 led to much public mourning and international media attention and he remains a popular figure in Sunderland's culture. "The loss of James," wrote Paul Redstone in O Captain! My Captain!: Sunderland's Lost Kings (2024) "has been the largest blow to the monarchy since predecessor George was killed at Whitehall."

Misery (1990)
Misery easily ranks as one of the best Stephen King Novel film adaptations. When we look at The Lawnmower Man and Sleepwalkers, that might not sound like much but this is a terrific thriller with high levels of suspense and a showstopping performance by Kathy Bates.
Famed novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) has recently sent the last of his successful Misery Chastain Victorian romance novels to the publisher. He is moving on to the next phase of his writing career when he crashes his car during a blizzard. A nurse named Annie Wilkes (Bates) finds him and brings him to her remote home, where she uses her medical skills to help him recuperate. When she discovers that her beloved Misery has been killed in Sheldon’s latest book, she insists he fixes his mistake and refuses to let him leave until he does.
You don’t have to read any behind-the-scenes material to guess where Stephen King got the inspiration for the novel (adapted for the screen by William Goldman). Even if you’re not an author or a creative professional, you can imagine yourself in this scenario. Sheldon is of course grateful to have been rescued. He's even flattered by the way Wilkes gushes over his work. The funny thing is that he’s already moved on from Misery. In fact, he holds a certain contempt for the series, which introduces immediate tension in the situation. You know and he knows, that eventually, Wilkes will learn what he has done. Even before she does, Sheldon could slip. When the truth comes out… how will Wilkes react? Even early on, there are hints that something about her is off. She’s just… too cheery. Something about her demeanor makes you think “This woman is acting all nice and everything, but I need to get away from her”. As time passes, Sheldon’s strength returns but the longer he stays, the closer Wilkes gets to the final chapter of his book. The suspense keeps building until we finally see Wilkes’ true side. Then, this becomes a whole other kind of movie.
It turns out Wilkes is part time bomb and part cuckoo clock. Sheldon needs to escape her care. You feel his terror but as a member of the audience, you're also excited. These kinds of movies draw you in because you do the same thing Sheldon does: you look around the room, looking for tools he can use to escape. Whenever an attempt fails, you're disappointed on his behalf… but inside, you’re also glad because it means the cycle gets to start over.
Bates’ portrayal of Annie Wilkes is one of the all-time great movie villains. The obsessive fan feels so real you can’t imagine anyone else taking on the role. Her voice and mannerisms when she’s calm, the way her temper explodes, the “office” she puts together so Sheldon can work and the changes in her body language/voice when she drops the niceties make her iconic. The memorable skin-crawling scenes that come as her obsession grows instantly burn themselves into your head (the Blu-ray I watched has the most unsettling scene - you know which one - on the cover).
Bates is not the only great performer in the film, however. James Caan makes Sheldon even more relatable than the script and setup already do. You can always tell what he’s thinking and how he’s feeling. If you were in Sheldon's shoes, you’d be doing the exact same thing as him. He's a quick-thinking protagonist, making the ordeal he goes through even more satisfying (and horrifying) to watch. I also want to give a shout-out to Richard Farnsworth as Sheriff Buster and to Frances Sternhagen as his wife and deputy, Virginia. The side story of the authorities searching for Sheldon is essential to the film’s success. Cutting to those scenes gives you some much-needed breathers and cranks up the intensity as the Sheriff gets closer to cracking the case but Buster and Virginia are great characters. Stephen King’s said that many (if not all) of his stories are set in the same universe. I know it’s been more than 30 years so it’s impossible, but it would’ve been awesome if more adaptations featured Buster and Virginia. Not as the main characters, but in fun cameos that got to show off their relationship.
It took me way longer than it should’ve to sit down and watch Misery. The film makes great use of its premise. The performances are phenomenal. It’s got memorable characters and scenes. It’s just a great film, period. (On Blu-ray, May 17, 2024)

FROM THE SMALLS ARCHIVE: MICAH THOMAS AT MEZZROW’S
Solo, 22 NOVEMBER 2024, 11:59 pm set
With Dean Torrey and Kayvon Gordon, 13 DECEMBER 2024, 10:30 pm set
I had hoped to see MICAH THOMAS with Immanuel Wilkins at Jazz St Louis at the end of October, but it was Paul Cornish who filled in on piano. They have pushed one another on Wilkins’ recordings and gigs, exciting young players to be sure. While he has struck me there as a bit edgy and free form, he also played with Joe Farnsworth and Sarah Hanahan where he just managed to keep up with their power. To be fair, Farnsworth imposes some structures while welcoming being pushed by these younger players.
Add a recent article in Paste that in raising the interesting notion that horn players innovate and pianists consolidate citing examples from King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton to Bird/Diz and Bud Powell and Coltrane and Tyner but also Andrew Hill, that we should keep our eyes on Wilkins and Thomas. Wellllll, exciting players, yes; reason to be optimistic about where the music will go, yes; the next big thing, doubt it.
But all this made me interested in what I would hear.
I was rather surprised that he was quite structured and lyrical at the solo gig. Sure he took on the changes inventively, but he and we always knew where we were in the tunes. With Dean Torrey and Kayvon Gordon as sympathetic launching pads on mostly original tunes, he was far more exploratory. The solo gig—and the work with Farnsworth—gave me a better sense of his approach so the out there was a little closer. Their take on Mel Torme’s Christmas Song with its roasting chestnuts was another touchstone whose sappy familiarity I actually appreciated. Still they were a sympathetic adventurous trio, but appreciated intellectually more than emotionally enjoyed.
But the solo set with tunes was just fun. There was plenty to appreciate in Thomas’ technique and invention, but Who Can I Turn To?, Someone To Watch Over Me, Monk’s In Walked Bud, What a Fool Believes (?!?), a gospel-y tune, a blues, a probably latter day pop song, the Sound of Music’s Somewhere in My Youth and Childhood with not quite embarrassing vocals, and a very short The Theme just made it easier to hear what he wants to say musically.
And that’s worthwhile.

Sejarah Televisi: Dari Gagasan ke Realitas
Ilustrasi foto sejarah perkembangan televisi. Sumber foto: Unsplash
Dengan kemajuan teknologi internet, konsep "TV on demand" muncul.
