The article from The Armory Life by Friedrich Seiltgen explores the Vought V-173 Flying Pancake, an innovative American disc-shaped aircraft developed during World War II. Conceived in the 1930s by Charles Zimmerman, the V-173's unique design featured two large counter-rotating propellers and a disc-shaped wing, aiming to eliminate drag and improve flight performance. Despite its unconventional design and potential, the aircraft faced issues like heavy controls, severe vibrations, and difficult landings. While Zimmerman and Vought Aircraft continued to develop the concept into the XF5U Flapjack—a more advanced version intending to serve as a carrier-based fighter—the project was ultimately canceled due to the rise of turbojet engines and changing military priorities post-WWII. The V-173, though never fully realized as a successful military aircraft, remains an important part of aviation history, now restored and displayed at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, Texas.

Schnorkel simulator.
US Naval Air Station Patuxent River "Submarine Simulator". The simulator was used as an ASW training device "find the snorkel and kill the submarine". It used captured German submarine snorkel for the topside portion. Emil Hymowitz, electrical engineer & head of one of the search radar units at Patuxent, rides a bicycle seat on the Snorkel Simulator & operates it manually. This photo was run in the December 1956 issue of Popular Mechanics. USN photo, 1 June 1956, from the files of the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum via Darryl L. Baker.
